ANTSHE NEWS Together we can make a difference.
~E-news U Can Use~ PRESIDENTIAL NOTES The 2004-2005 ANTSHE Year is now in the third quarter and I am so pleased to provide the Membership with information about the growth of the organization. Reflecting back over the past year, we have experienced growing pains and positive growth “spurts.” This year began with a small Board of Directors and many open positions. In March, committed members came forward to fill these open positions. We have had a very busy year with many new projects undertaken. Since information about these projects will be announced at the New Hampshire Conference, I am not able to release this exciting information at this time. However, I can say that we are looking forward to one of the best conferences in ANTSHE’s history. Also, new awards to honor those who continue to work for non-traditional students across this nation will be announced at the conference. This organization is operated by an all-volunteer staff at present. Therefore, many obstacles are encountered because of this fact. However, this board does not see any of these obstacles as stumbling blocks but as challenges. I am very fortunate to work with some of the best people from across the nation. Their dedication and commitment to this organization has created the momentum to accelerate ANTSHE to greater heights of public awareness in the educational communities across the United States and Canada. The current Board of Directors is very dedicated to continue the growth of ANTSHE. I had appointed a Marketing Committee, chaired by Gabe DeGabriele. The Marketing Committee has distributed ANTSHE flyers and brochures throughout the nation. We developed an informational CD that can be mailed or given to institutions and/or organizations that express interest in ANTSHE. We have been invited to attend other conferences to promote our organization. Another goal associated with ANTSHE’s growth is to have a permanent office and paid staff members. This will be quite an undertaking and requires the cooperation of many people to work together for this to happen successfully. In order to realize this goal, I began to seek outside sources of funding. Assisting me in this endeavor is Gerald Morgan, Student Representative. He has been researching grants and business plans information. I have drafted the business plan which has been accepted by the Board of Directors at the October meeting in Wichita, KS. I am in the process of applying for grants with the assistance of Art Manjarrez, Student Representative. These accomplishments and continuing projects would not be possible without a collaborative effort by all the Board members. I am very proud to be the President of this Board of Directors and the opportunity to work with each of them. Let’s keep this momentum going! The New Hampshire Conference will be exciting and I am looking forward to seeing and talking with each of you. See You Soon, Tina Lloyd, President

Consultant Report I have had the privilege of serving ANTSHE as the consultant over the last year. As the consultant I have been assisting the Board of Directors in several ways. One of the primary ways that I have assisted the Board of Directors is in the marketing of the organization. I have worked with the Board of Directors in the design and implementation of several different marketing strategies. We have a CD, brochure, and PowerPoint presentation that can be utilized to inform institutions or organizations about ANTSHE. In the addition to the creation of these marketing tools, I attended several conferences and visited many institutions to promote the organization. In October I attended the National Conference on Off-Campus Student Trends in Denton, Texas. I gave away several CD’s, brochure, flyers about our upcoming conference and scholarship information. In November I attended the LAANE conference held in New Hampshire. I was able to promote our upcoming conference and gave away many promotional items to many different institutions and organizations in the area. In December, I traveled to Kansas City, Missouri and visited several institutions. I was able to renew some old contacts and make some new contacts. Many of these institutions shared a sincere interest in our organization. I am expecting many of them to join our organization in the near future. In addition to these responsibilities, I have been assisting the Board of Directors with the future planning of the organization. We are looking forward to a very prosperous future. I believe that we will continue to grow the more that we promote our organization. One thing that is very apparent to me is that this is the time to work hard to promote our organization. The non-traditional student population across the nation continues to be on the rise. It is essential that we continue to inform institutions, organizations and others about our organization this will help in the growth of the organization. Gabe DeGabriele ANTSHE Consultant

“Back to the Future; Navigating Life’s Transitions
U Can 2 The personal story of the “typical” nontraditional contains all of the elements necessary for the creation of an exciting story-line. Despite the obvious oxymoron, our story begins with a hero. Our hero will overcome amazing hardship and ignore impossible odds. As each of these stories unfolds, academic track records are punctuated with amazing achievements. The achievements themselves even have a touch of irony associated with them. Youth, high metabolism rates and attendant small clothing sizes are often a poor predictor of intellectual achievement. In fact the youthful freedom and vibrancy of the traditional student can be their undoing. Such abuse of freedom has occasionally led to the subsequent phenomenon we call the nontrad. Enter the nontraditional student with a backpack full of child’s toys bearing the full brunt of the monthly bills. While caring for their families, earning a living, or even serving in the military, our hero graduates with many honors and a stellar GPA. Yes, the nontrad may have returned with a load of unseen struggles as well. Still after years of academic pause and often despite digital despair our protagonist has the highest grades in the class; much to the dismay of the more attractive or athletic quasi-contemporaries. Finally our hero prepares to ride off into an individualistic sunset and we see the only melancholy aspect of the process. Left behind is another fledgling nontrad; just beginning a college career. Our champion only needs to tell their story of encouragement and the struggle of those who follow will be lessened. Make certain the story of triumph is celebrated. Go to “the U can Too” link at the ANTSHE website and submit your story. If it is selected it will be published in a bound book which will be sold for a
“The Code of Student Life” by any other name… Every educational facility has a group of policies to guide students. These policies may have different titles in different institutions. At UNC Wilmington, they are known as “The Code of Student Life.” Our collection of policies and procedures are housed in a small booklet measuring approximately 5 ½” x 8 ½” x ¼”, but do not let the small size fool you. It is chock-full of extremely important information and should be used as a reference resource to cover questions that may arise during one’s college career. This booklet covers everything from the “Freedom and Responsibility in the University Community-Section 600 (p.3) to the Federal Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988 (p. 176). Student organization leaders should be well versed in the rules and regulations of their respective schools that cover their activities and event planning. This will help to prevent potential risk management occurrences. As the clique goes, “knowledge is power!” Use the resources available. The UNC Wilmington Cornerstone, which encapsulates our “Code of Student Life” follows: I am an engaged learner in constant search of knowledge. I foster human dignity through acts of civility and respect. I maintain a distinguished character based on truth, honesty

I pursue inner-peace by recognizing the significance of spirituality. I demonstrate honorable citizenship through acts of civic engagement. I embrace community by active involvement and service. I lead a lifestyle that advances physical health and emotional well-being. Submitted by: M.J. Giammaria, President Nontraditional Student Organization – UNCW Secretary - ANTSHE
