PHASE I
The new policies co-produced with the engagement of local governing authorities and the informal settlers should lead to a participatory and co-management process in the revitalization of the stream. Sand dams can be implemented to allow for the provision of water (non-drinkable) all year around. Environmental performance of the project would be based on the informal community maintaining the project. Reclaiming the stream as a “kitchen community garden” allows for the inclusion of informal settlers in land use planning. The access to this valuable natural resource for subsistence will engage them in environmental issues and encourage them to take care of the space. The collective action at the community level will implement green informal livelihood strategies. Our proposal promotes urban farming as a way of landscape appropriation creating strongth and long lasting communities. Moreover, this agriculture generates a small but significant economy for families less responsive to markets. The revitalization of the stream should incorporate stakeholders’ appropriation without privatization. In that way the site should be accessible, without fences and providing paths open to the whole community.
PHASE II
After the new construction has started and relocation of businesses has taken place, the new issued market will provide a space for formal and informal businesses alike. Our structure will address the needs mostly of women and youth entrepreneurs offering opportunity for empowerment of workers. It optimizes the innovative potential of the informal activities and opportunities for poverty reduction and economic growth. This space could bring groups together, strengthening and supporting the performance of informal workers..
PHASE III

RELOCATION / DENSIFICATION IN SELECTED AREAS
REMODELLING BUILT ENVIRONMENT
Our design a proposal is based on context and its corresponding problematics. At the final stage, this area could be a hub of qualitative public spaces that contribute to people’s well being, inclusiveness, and economic growth. With pedestrian friendly roads, public and community places, and better working conditions for both formal and informal activities.

STREAM
Poses a link between the Kinda Kundu public places and where the informal communities reside. This informal segment could contribute effectively in the sustainable transformation of the stream. The governing authorities should support the project to create an enabling environment which engages the settlers, including participatory opportunities. Indeed with a strong tenure security informal communities would be inclined to contribute to the improvement and management of the stream.
PARK
To balance the dynamism and the loud heckling of the retail trade area, a park should be near as a public resting place. The park is rather calm providing possibilities for standing and sitting as well as hearing and talking. Protection against unpleasant climate will be provided by tree plantations. The option of endemic species should be encouraged to promote the heritage and preservation of the location. Moreover these species accommodate to the climate and require minimum maintenance costs and water usage. The envisioned park would indeed create hotspots for spontaneous activities resulting from a canopy of cooling shadows (especially during the dry season). This open forest could promptly become appropriated by the users as a place of gathering and discussion or may also transform into a stage for performance and storytelling. A tree with an impressive stature as the African baobab (Andansonia digita) or the African tulip tree (Spathodea campanulata) could also take place in a particular location and become the symbol of the space.
MARKET
The market creates inviting spaces for formal and informal economies. The market´s roof is made out of corrugated steel which is inexpensive and durable. This choice was made based on the envisioned heavy usage of the market as a public space and as such its infrastructure should be strong and long lasting. The integration of formal and informal activities in the same location allows for the implementation and growth of the local economy. This public space brings people together without segregating groups and make for a safe space.
PUBLIC SPACE
Our proposal includes the streets as public spaces for people. The buildings on the road support our limiting the height of the edges to one floor. At the street level, this provides for formal shops and es with climate protection for buyers and informal sellers. Our structure manages to open the view of the retail market below the canopy welcoming people in. The large stairs allocated on the south side opens the access to Kunda Kindu’s public spaces.
design by empty spacthe park and of the site
The infrastructure surrounding Kunda Kindu and the varying elevations of the ground protects the new main market from the heavy traffic as a cocoon. Vehicle access is regulated by allowing it only for provision of goods to the shops during downtime. The space gains livability and economical power by making Kalundu and the CBD Terminus the only two main terminals in Kitui. This allows for the expansion and diversifying of the market.
ROAD WORKS
Kibwezi-Kitui road should not provide more than 2 lanes for vehicle traffic in the center of the town to avoid the division of the city in two parts. Our intention is to lower pollution levels and keep the surroundings of the road more livable. Furthermore, the street should be built up and widened to contribute to the fluid circulation of pedestrians. The project should create a walk able link between Kalundu, the new main bus terminal and Kunda Kindu Market. In that sense the Bypass Road and the Ring Road should set aside provisions to deviate the major part of the circulation through Kitui. On the surroundings of our site of study, the road should be widened only up to 35m with proper implementation of bus stops and sidewalks. By the side of the road, the landscaped swale serves for rainwater catchment and as such enables trees to grow nearby and provide shade.
