School of Higshscope Gedebage This final project took the location in the Central Primary Distric Gedebage, Bandung. This project consists of Elementary School and Junior High School with its supporting facilities. There some design issues to be solved and a challenge to create active learning environment. The combination between Highscopephilosophy and method generates a design concept of safe, pleasant and fun school. The concept of the school is implemented in an area zoning arrangement of the building mass to make open space between them. Single loaded corridor system was used to maximize visual acces and response to tropical climate condition.

concept! To make a safe, pleasant, and fun school, there have to be something shown as a design, so this big idea generates a concept on how the student can see, feel, and touch everything in the school. The concept of “see” gives an idea of a centred building mass to give a maximum visual access. The concept of “feel” gives an idea to design a lot of open space as a playful and positive space. Various textures of a building and landscape materials can be a implementation for the concept of “touch”. This concept also can be implemented on a design of various sequences and different place experiences.

There’s also an option to drop off and pick up the student at the drop off area on the both side entrance for elementary school and junior high school. Although the classrooms for elementary school and junior high school are separated, but the main and common facilities are on one area, the edgy past of the site. The circulation on this building is looping so all the users can access all the facilities easily.

Altering the Facade This project aim is to design a sustainable facade for Ando’s hotel with different climate condition. Adaptive architecture is used as a concept of the whole building, such as building facade and building system. Adaptive facade is used to respond the natural habitat around the building and tropical climate. Beside that, adaptive facade can make a various pattern on the facade based on its respond to particular parameter. Origami becomes a big idea to make an adaptable foldable facade. This origami pattern has a flexible and stiff characteristic so that it can be used as the element of the facade. The foldable sun-shading uses flexible characteristic of the origami folding and for the stiffness of this origami folding is used as a medium for vertical garden. Adaptive architecture is also implemented on building system for water harvesting and the air control for each room.

sustainability concept! The direct sunlight almost covers the whole surface of the building facade, so that the intensity of the light needs to be controlled. One of the solutions for this problem is to design adaptable sun shading, controlled by a light censor that operates depends on the light intensity. Foldable sun shading is used as adaptable sun shading because it can be flexible and also gives an aesthetic value. Typical foldable sun shading has a steel frame with a built in light censor and 3 axes to be pulled. Watering system for the hotel using a rainwater harvesting system. This system is used as a watering system for plants and pool. Besides that, rainwater is also stored for later use during the dry season.

Trans TV Office

This project aim is to design a television studio with its production facilities and office representative in Bandung. Since Trans TV is one of the emerging TV station in Indonesia, they focus on how to bring creativity through the program and their working environment. They working ethos become an idea for the design concept. They need a creative environment with flexibility, space for brainstorming, unexpected arrangement of space, and of course a convenience space. Not only the workers who needs to be accommodated, but also anyone who wants to visit one of the television program or just want to see the crew taking shots. So there is public area that can be used by anyone at anytime. A television studio requires a specialized structure that inviolable with other building structure. These two main design issues, which are flexibility and modular structure, can be solved by a concept of Lego. Lego is a modular system but has a uniqueness to make a flexible shape, so this concept should fulfil the basic requirements.

concept! The building mass is designed to maximize the land use, so it set to the perimeter. To create a lot of flexible and unexpected space, the shape of each floor is different. There are indoor and outdoor space that can be used by public or workers only based on its function and zone. The concept of lego also implemented on the facade. The entire prefabricated panel for facade (facing north-south) using pattern of lego.

This concept generates a flexible building mass and gives a chance to have more public space. There’s two kind of public space, the one where everyone can use and other one just for television crew. The concept of Lego is also used for the details, such as landscape pattern, transparent roof, and wall texture.

28 | 29

The configuration form of Lego bricks gives a lot of positive space, both on outside and inside the building. These spaces are used as a brainstorming area for the employee, especially the one that deals with creative matters. The indoor space is designed with no separation and with an installation of a unique booth. The outdoor space is designed with an area of shade and the arrangement of landscape.

The details of the landscape also adapted from Lego block. The landscape is designed as if something pop up from the ground in form of lego blocks. The landscape is designed with various heights so it also can be used as a seating place.

creative programming on

CihaurgeulisMarket

Most common problems of the traditional market in Indonesia are the poor space quality, the unarranged shop zone, and decreasing the desire of citizens to go to the market. These common problems usually solved by common solution, such as just a physical renovation. This thesis focuses on how to solve traditional market problems in Indonesia with different approach to maximize its potential and widen the market range. Pasar Cihaurgeulis has its own characteristic and located on a strategic area so that this place has a lot of potentials to be maximized. This location needs to go through creative programming process to achieve its best function as a facility that can be fitted for now and for the future. Creative programming also seeking to get the best function that can be presented, and this case will be done with Power of Place approach. Power of place is used as an approach because it is emphasizing on power and uniqueness of the place that can be seen from creative ethos from the stakeholders. This kind of potential is prospective to be developed more as a creative economy, which can be good for the marketplace sustainability.

the hypothesis! Creative programming is carried out to determine a variety of functions that synergistic with the marketplace and its surroundings to make this location as a good public space and social space. Creative programming processes produce a kind of facilities hypothesis that would be placed on this location. Based on needs of all stakeholders and potential users, there are 5 functions that will be placed on this location

traditional market

book market

Traditional market is the core of this location so it has to be kept on this site. One of the solutions to restore the existence of the market is combining with other functions and make the synergy from one to another

The existing book market used to be one of the famous book markets in Bandung. Besides to restore the existence, this market should be kept because there are still a lot of potential users from students, and all potential users

This case study process and analysis generates the main idea of the design, “open” and “flexible”. This concept is implemented by a building design with a minimum wall and many temporary spaces. The concept of flexible showed at the use of all temporary space based on time-based use

Cigondewah is the biggest fabric market in Bandung and became a supplier for convection industries in this area. Not only become a storage and representative, this market could be an attractor for potential users

“If you want to seed a place with activity, put out food” William H. Whyte To activate the place up to 24 hours and also to accommodate basic daily needs of the users around the site

Youth Hostel will be a low cost accommodation to accommodate the middle to low market for hotel. Youth hostel scenario is open 24 hours so it could be the generator to keep the whole building alive for 24 hours

concept!

The building mass is designed to maximize the land use, so it set to the perimeter. To create open and flexible spaces, the shape of the building is design with thin form. There are several open spaces shaped by cutting the mass based on the way of coming potential users. There is tower with heights of the maximum floor number, because that is the requirements of hostel area to have room as many as possible to attract the investors. All functions are placed at each floor based on their synergy, one to another.

This building adapt a permeability concept as an implementation of “flexible” concept, where the building is designed with a continuity circulation that allows people to go through the building from one node to another. This concept is used to maximize the economic value for each facility. There are three main spots to “catch” all the users around the site that designed as nodes and connected each other. This nodes connector is an implementation to permeability concept

Rethink and renew became a theme for World Architecture Festival 2012. The student competition began with the proposal submission about the site that will be developed with this theme approach. Social symbiosis became our main concept for this project, on how a place could be a melting pot for many different communities. We would like to make this project as an Urban Catalyst, so we decided to make a cafe, gallery, a renowned retail, and a space for community gathering. We’ve been shortlisted to join Student Charrete on Singapore and given an opportunity to present the project in front of the professional judges.

Bringing Back “Otista” On 1935, Otista used to be the cleanest street in Indonesia. Making a public space on this site is an effort to get that “name” again for Otista. There are a lot of problems need to be solved at this street, such as the traffic caused by illegal parking on-street, the unarranged street hawkers, the crowded entrance of Pasar Baru Trade Center, and lack of open space for public. Besides those problems, there is also strength at this area, the arcade at all shop-houses along the street for pedestrian path. Re-design the front face of Pasar Baru and making a SOCIOSPACE along the arcade corridor become a focus on the Otista problem solving. SOCIOSPACE is designed to accommodate the street hawkers, parking area, and also become an open space along the street corridor.
