THESIS- DESIGNER’S HUB, MADURAI SEMESTER EIGHT

ANALYSIS SEX

OVERVIEW Over the past centauries the traditional handloom production has been steadily replaced by the industrial production in countries across the globe. Furthermore, the push towards modernization and mechanization of the sector has crippled some sectors of the craft industry. Crafts are not only an important source of livelihood in India but are also often connected to socio-cultural tradition which makes it elemental to the preservation of cultural diversity and identity. Despite the efforts of government & implementation of policies designed to strengthen the structure, artisans themselves continue to be marginalized, their average earnings often well below the stipulated minimum wages.

MADURAI HANDLOOM SECTOR Handloom sector of Madurai has been majorly run by weaver‟s from the region of Saurashtra, Gujarat, who had migrated from Gujarat to Madurai in the 14th Centaury & have settled in Madurai since then. The Saurashtrian handloom weavers of Madurai are primarily silk weavers, they were basically royal weavers, but since the end of monarchy in Madurai their business started to collapse. Due to the overpower of the industrial region the local weavers and their art is dying out. This study is done to analyze the problems faced by the weaving community.

CONCLUSION Two major conclusions are made from this analysis. • Firstly the present generation of weavers are only skilled in one kind of job & if that is lost then it will be very difficult for them to make both ends meet, • Secondly most of the weavers work under private owners where they get exploited more in comparison to working in a society thus if they directly sell their products in a retail market the exploitation would be less & they will be more independent, rather than being interdependent.

THESISDESIGNER’S HUB, MADURAI SEMESTER EIGHT Architecture The wavers colony was initially near the Thirumalai Nayakar palace but now many people have shifted away from the congested old city to the periphery of Madurai.

Traditional Weaver’s House

Weaver House Plan

Kind of spaces Porch: The entrance in some traditional houses has a platform to sit which becomes a public spot facing the street. Multipurpose hall This is the living space right after the entrance porch which would act like the living room & the workshop area for the weaver.

Materials used Traditionally brick & mortar cement was used for the walls, wooden rafters & terracotta tiles were used for roofs & cement flooring with red-oxide finish was used for the floors, these traditional houses have reduced in number majorly as the shift occurred. New houses were constructed with R.C.C, however except the materials used for construction nothing much in spatial terms differ from the traditional brick houses.

Kitchen This is generally at the back of the house sometimes the backyard space behind this is used for washing utensils etc. A

THESISDESIGNER’S HUB, MADURAI SEMESTER EIGHT Design Vision The vision is to create a system where the craftsman could get the opportunity to increase his/her horizon in terms of creativity by experimenting on various kinds of materials, producing different types of goods & creating new styles of design, thus a “Designer‟s Hub” had been proposed

where designers related to the field of textile & handicrafts from all over the world would work together towards creating various kinds of products with innovative designs; this setup was proposed at Madurai, to promote the silk weaving community of Saurashtra. Old City Layout Expansion Of City

Studying Madurai

About Madurai

Before designing any institutional public setup in such a historically & culturally rich city like Madurai, one should be familiar to the culture & tradition of the place ; how it has shaped the built forms or vice versa, which will give a clear understanding of the place where the project is proposed.

Madurai; the oldest city of South India well known as a pilgrim centre today. It has been a great centre of culture and civilization for the past two millenniums. Emergence of the city happened around 6th century A.D. Pandyas dynasty made the city their capital, Pandyas ruled Madurai till the 14th century. Madurai is designed according to the Rajdhani plan, described in Manasara, one of the Shilpasastra. Designer‟s Hub, Madurai/ Portfolio /6

THESISDESIGNER’S HUB, MADURAI SEMESTER EIGHT Site Analysis The site is 6333 sqm, the site is located near a lake, it has a state highway running towards it southern side, it overlooks the lake & a small hillock on which stands Taj getaway hotel on the northeastern side & on the southwestern side it overlooks the rockcut Murugan temple. Wind to the site comes from the direction of the lake. The site is flat in nature with red soil type.

Design Ideology The concept of the designer‟s hub is influenced by the town planning techniques of the “Manasara silpa sastram” based on which the ancient city of Madurai was planned, it is a symbolic & interpretive gesture to honor the wise town planners of ancient India. Since the project‟s basic idea is to promote the art of weaving thus the weaver‟s workshop is given the utmost importance, thus the weavers workshop is in the center & all the roads lead towards it, its height is also thought to be the most in comparison to the remaining structures in the complex. Site Boundaries

The accessibility The site is easily accessible being very closely located near the state highway, it is a part of Madurai but being in the outskirts is a bit away from the congested city.

Neighborhood It is four kilometers away from the

weaver‟s colony, which makes it easier for the weavers to commute, it is also close to rock cut temple which is a famous tourist spot in Madurai thus tourists visiting Madurai can easily accesses this place, its proximity to Taj resort (3.5 km) will attract a variety of national & international tourists.

7

Services Since there is a settlement near the site so services like electricity, could be got from there, also water could be taken from corporation & the lake nearby . Other services like telecommunication can also be made available quiet easily. North-East Winds

Conceptual Sketches

About Designer's Hub The experimental project; „Designer's Hub” has been proposed in which designers related to the field of textile & handicrafts from all over the world would work together towards creating various kinds of products ,this setup is thought to be created at Madurai, to promote the silk weaving community of Saurashtra, which is on the verge of extinction this will also strengthen the cotton industry which has become stagnant in terms of generating newer products & innovative designs. This institute will also be a retail market for tourists & general public as well.

Central portion is the weavers‟ workspace which is surrounded by access roads on all four sides, intersecting them are other access roads coming from various other parts of the complex leading to the center. From the entrance one can either go to the left hand side which is this space for visitors & tourists or go to the right hand side which is the designer‟s & artisan‟s hub which is at close proximity to the weavers workshop, so are the exhibition & market areas. The congregational space is facing towards the lake, between the weavers‟, artisans‟ & designers‟ workshop is their dwelling & the tourist dwelling is near the workshop space which would give the tourist an easy accessibility to the workshop space. SETTLEMENT STUDY, GANDHI NU GRAM, KUTCH. SEMESTER FOUR History The state of Gujarat has a plethora of distinct tribes, however all of them share a common culture. All these tribes can be broadly classified into two groups based on the religion they follow -Hindus & Muslims . The people of Kutch mostly belong to the Muslim community, most of them though local inhabitants, their ancestors were migrants who settled in Banni region of Kutch quite a while back.. The migration was in progress for over five centuries, due to this the Hindu population in the Banni region of Kutch is comparatively less. Chronologically in Ludiya village, Banni the first settlement were of the Jat Muslims. Later small groups of Harijans of the Hindu community settled along with the Muslims. After a massive earthquake hit the place in 2002, the once united communities got divided & currently Harijans reside in the new Ludiya Village.

Migration Of Muslims People of the Muslim community migrated into Kutch from Afghanistan, Pakistan & Iran. The reason of the migration is not very lucid, but most of them were shepherds. Since they were seminomadic communities, they kept travelling from one place to the other in search of good fodder for their cattle.. Hence they found the Grasslands of Kutch, which flourishes with especially during the monsoons & decided to settle here after crossing the Sindh region. Currently more than 1500 Muslims reside in Ludiya Village. (Post Earthquake).

Migration Of Hindus Hindu migration started almost a century after the Muslim migration, the Harijans Hindu population migrated from the Marwad region of Rajasthan state after invasion of their lands by the Mughals. Most of the Harijans main occupation in weaving. Currently about 350 Hindus reside in New Ludiya village (post earthquake).

Revival Of Settlement A holistic approach was adopted for the redevelopment of Gandhi Nu gram after the calamity. Starting from the Socio-Cultural traditions, economic factors to the local building systems of the area were revived. The local community were involved through out the design process of their new Bhungas (Traditional circular dwellings.) starting from the planning to the construction stage. Beyond these primary issues like income generation, solar power for electricity & provision of check dams & ponds for water supply had also been established for a sustainable future of the residents of area. village (post earthquake).

Design Project Based on the study I redesigned the village of Gandhi Nu Gram by rectifying the flaws which I found in the current plan as an Architecture Enthusiast. Settlement Study, Gandhi Nu Gram / Portfolio /10

SETTLEMENT STUDY, GANDHI NU GRAM, KUTCH. SEMESTER FOUR Construction Bhunga

Of

The block for foundation are laid using local mud and cement is used for the mortar . The process of brick layer is called CHNATER.

The walls are laid continuous with the foundation using cow dung & local mud compound. These are mixed with water to make a strong bond.

The main beam (ADI) is installed after the completion of the wall on which the king post (Principal rafter) is placed.

The VALIS (principal rafter) are tied at the top to the MANN (cone) & to each other with KATHI (ropes). The KHAPATIS (minor rafter) fill in the spaces left by the VALIS.

The space b/w them is covered with thatch.

The Bhunga (Traditional Dwelling) The Bhunga is a circular enclosed hut which is eco-friendly because its made of local materials , it is also climatically apt for the region. This had been the traditional form of dwelling for the people of this region & it works very well even in the contemporary times

Theme & Concept Ludiya an impoverished village in the heart of Bhuj was rocked to rubbles by the Earthquake which took place in 2002. The government provided few Hindu families whose houses were completely in ruins a piece of land in which they built their residences a fresh ,that settlement came to be known as Gandhi nu gram The flaws of the earlier planning were studied & an attempt towards a sensitive design was approached both climatically & economically, even the material chosen for the dwellings (inspired from Nubian vault) were made of mud which would keep the temperature inside cooler than outside & also reduce the cost of construction the layout was planned in a way which would help generate interaction and help make the space culturally active throughout the day. .

The concept of the Primary health care(P.H.C) center design was to break away from the rigid doubly loaded planning, and bring in an orderly flow of transition into spaces. The orientation of the building was planned in such a way that there would be a continual flow of air through the structure thus giving a sense of comfort to the patients & staff . Design Proposal

The team worked towards the development of the Ghat area. The prime concern was to make the space visually appealing , to bring out its traditional flavor which was found to be missing & also to utilize dead spaces to make the area more active & distribute the crowd thus making the place less chaotic especially during the Kumbh-mela. Ghat area was proposed to be developed by adding a few creative changes, pictures of the existing site were taken & new proposals were suggested to rejuvenate the spaces, the sketches shown are the proposals of redesigned spaces.
