In This Issue In every issue of Skyline, we present you with an area in Bangalore along with the antique architecture that lies covered amidst the busy city life. In the same line, the areas of Commercial Street, Sivaji Nagar and M.G.Road are explored in this issue. The reason of choosing this place is because of its high profilic view in the eyes of the citizens of Bangalore. It is always considered as a place always in hush, busy and modern. The shops and vendors present make the place even more louder, but behind all these, there is another face to it- a calmer one. Among the shoppers and vendors, there are building and houses that stand calm and silent radiating the past of the Indians. The calmness, which is barely noticable, caught our eyes and we thought to bring it to our readers who would love to explore the other side of the area.

Editorial B ehind the busy streets of Bangalore city there lies a spread of calm. It reveals itself to only those who dare to peer into the streets and narrow lanes that lie hidden behind its busy comercial hubs.
One example is that of the area that surrounds commercial street. Commercial street is known for its busy streets, bustling with vendors of almost all wares. It is one of the most busiest markets in the Garden City. It is frequented by both locals as well as travellers. Starting from small scale vendors right up to big brands, Commercial street has it all. Yet what we have in offer in this edition is not the bustling streets of this area. Instead we present another perspective that explores the tin streets and residential spaces of the area. A lot of the architecture is based on old styles of construction - though some of them have been modified with the arrival of new technologies. On the whole, the area wears the look of a place that has not yet been disturbed much by the surroundigs in terms of architecture.
The edition captures in a series of frames, the architectural details of some of the residential areas as well as commercial spaces in the area. The feel of the environment has also tried to be conveyed in the images. So we hope to take you through some of the overlooked details and give you an impression of a gradually faltering reality as such spaces would dissapear with increasing rates of urbanisation. We also hope that some of the photos taken would prove to be an inspiration to the readers of this magazine.

The walls along the main road have interesting works of grafitti. They add to the meaning of the walls- giving them new life. The colours in the graffitti are vibrant and colourful in contrast to the dull and sobre surroundings where dull browns and greens are predominating.

The walls extend for a long while. The area is covered in shade and very dim light. A passerby can go on walking endlessly if he or she would like to as the stories told by the walls unfold with every step they take.

Some of the houses are nestled within the main Commercial Street area in quiet alleyways- blocked from all the noise and hustle of the market. Yet even within the hustle of the main streets, one can catch glimpses of the fine details on looking closely.

There are several buildings that stand out as independent structures. For instance, the building to the left has been built for nonresidential purposes. Some of the buildings spak of neglect and lie abandonned- with outgrowths of grass and other small plants.

apturing the doors and its surroundings, came as an interesting topic of showing the architecture that prevailed in the olden times. Among the famous buildings and monuments that still stand intact, are a few of the forgotten small pieces of residential builds, containing small details of elements that can be traced and inspired for today’s architecture. When questioned upon the subject, the doors were not just used as an entrance to a house, but it contained a lot of elements, speaking about the house itself. From the latches that was fastened and coated with rust, the lamp shade, and the door embellishments, everything speaks abouth the aesthetics of the era and sometimes even give us an inspiration to look upon. The interesting part of these doors, are how they bring a story within them, the way they blend with the other elements present. The antiqueness lies within the structure of how it is built. The doors represent the house from outside, giving the feel of inside and concentrating the essence of the architecture. The residential houses, have a subtle and a toned down and feel, drawing less attention that the houses required. Also what makes more interesting, is how these doors can be still related to our poersonal lives, reminding us our trips to grandparents home, which still provides a bridge to tge past, reminiscing about it.

Carrying Tradition
Its not just doors, that give the feel, but also whats placed on the doors. The dried up leaves, along with freshly placed ones depicts, hung on the door shows how the old ones still have it’s placed fixed among it’s modern contemporaries. All these seems still fresh, maybe we have just forgotten all these styles, between the modern things evolved. A sharp contrast can be observed inrelation to its surroundings when the old architecture is surrounded by objects that well ahead in time in relation to the antiquity.

“ What is more interesting is the way it is still intact and still stand as an evidence to those who still have interest in the age old Indian architecture.
Guarding Locks
It is not just doors that are interesting, but also the embellishments and elements that are added, provide the grace and style of the architecture. Small dome like structures add richness, and makes it look more like royalty. The door handles are also designed to create more antique feel. These bring out the vintage look in the streets of Bangalore. What is more interesting is the way it is still intact and still stand as an evidence to those who still have interest in the age old Indian architecture. Also commentable are the colours used, contrasting to the colours that the Indians are stereotyped. Very subtle yet rich colours with metallic finish is provided to giving a feel of the lightness. The locks that are covered with rust tells it’s age however the slight fingerprints that rests on it, showcases that it is still being lived. Observing these things provide us a fair idea of how our ancestors thought about the art of architecture. They can be a source of inspiration and knowledge when observed carefully to the budding architects.

Grills The grills found in the streets showed a three dimensional textures and always adopted geometric shapes. What is more interesting is the shadow that forms, during the sunny days. The half damaged grills, walls add to the dramatic antiqueness and shows how the architecture is still living, allthough it is not in the condition it was in the past.

Lights The lights of the past are quite interesting, a lot of knowledge went behind the design and aesthetics. Mainly, wireframe techniques were used to protect as well give an appeal. Since all the lights were placed in the front of houses, they were well safeguarded using wire. All the houses, had a lamp place, with a depression on the wall (thakha) which were also designed differently for each house.

Pillars
Pillars that are now vanishing in residential perspective, was more common in houses of olden days. The pillars were not always used for support, but also decorated with different designs and carvings that are lost in today’s modern world.

Things that are present, surrounding the building also makes an interesting visual elements that goes with it’s enviroment. The cycle stand and chains made a very good visually appealing props enhancing the way old architecture looked. The cultural aspect of the people living there were also blended within.
