A car-restoration project is a great way to build relationship. It's a great way to connect with a father or a son, a nephew or an uncle. Girls are getting more and more into vehicles these days as well; so you might even say niece or aunt. Regardless, fixing an old clunker into something funkier is fun and rewarding. But there are things to consider when you're getting down and dirty. Like what kind of restoration project you're doing. Are you going for a ratrod, or a hotrod? Granted, the hotrod is a lot sexier, but it's going to cost you more. You can technically restore a vehicle as cheaply as you like, but the connotation of a hotrod is that at the end of the day, you've got a beautiful car in front of you. It's a project. You want it to look nice. For this reason, people usually go top-shelf, and a decent hotrod could run you $50,000 or more, when all is said and done. It may also take longer, and while fun, satisfying, etcetera, could be more hassle than you intended. Going the ratrod route could be better. What's a ratrod, you ask? the gutter, then quit imagining a bunch of rodents on the cruise smoking, drinking and frightening the elderly. A ratrod is a car that's been Macguyvered into awesomeness. An example of a ratrod would be a bus conversion project. Someone buys an old school bus at auction, then transforms it into a sick pad that's not just a motorhome, it's an actual house. How much did it cost? Oh, ten thousand or so, when the dust settled. Or go simpler; you could have a Ford bed on a Chevy chassis, then watch redneck heads explode up and down the street whenever you drive by. When you finally decide what you're going to do, go slow with it. Take your timeâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;this is a restoration project; it's not a timecrunch. A car restoration should be above anything else an enjoyable experience. Finding parts can be tricky on classic models, but a salvage yard will usually have something you can use if you know what you're looking for. When you've found the car you're going to restore, call all the salvage lots and see if they've got any vehicles like yours. To that end, it makes sense to restore a vehicle that was a popular model at one time, because you're more likely to find the parts you need. Though rarer hotrod restorations are more interesting, they're also much more challenging. If you like a challenge, go for it! Depending on where you live, though, it could involve a lot of travel. It goes without saying that restoring a vehicle is something you should do personally. While you can certainly buy the car,

assemble the parts, and have a mechanic do it, that's going to double, triple, even quadruple the cost. That said, restoring a car doesn't have to be a leisurely process that teaches you as you go and leaves you with the satisfaction of having practically built something from the ground up yourself. It could be just about melding parts from different vehicles into something more. Be sure to schedule at least a day a month to work on the vehicle, even though you're taking your time. The wife isn't going to put up with it in the garage indefinitely. You can probably string it out over twenty years, but that gets wearying. The key here is: balance. Find yours. Finally, get help. Like, not mental help! No, no noâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;it doesn't matter how good a mechanic you are, you just don't have the physical strength to do all the heavy lifting yourselfâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;if you don't need advice, you'll need a helping hand. That's why it makes sense to have a car-restoration project involve somebody you know and love; whose company, at the very least, you enjoy. Also, you may want to get advice from tenured mechanics that know their cars. Restoring a car is something everybody ought to try at least once in their lives. It's educational, it's fun, it's satisfying, it's unique, and at the end of the day you've got a new property that has higher value than it would have been otherwise. One final tip: Tim Allen's stand-up. It'll get your blood pumping, and may even inspire you a bit. There's something very manly about a car-restoration project; even if you're not a man.
