CONCEPTUAL FORM / CONTEXTURAL DEVELOPMENT British Troops first came to Hong Kong Island, they landed at Stanley under the guiding of Chan Kwan, most probably a Tanka (coastal boat woman) and she led them from the south to the north to start their colonial journey from Stanley. Then they made Stanley as the temporary administrative centre and built military installation to serve the armed forces called Stanley Fort. Since ah Kwan showed the way to the British Troops, the road was named “Kwan Tai Road” ah kwan leading the way”. Typhoon Mary was considered the worst storm to hit Hong Kong in 1960, it created significant amount of damage and made landfall at the colony, more than 50 fishing vessels capsized and sank in the anchorages during the typhoon, some weak squatter shacks on the shore made out of tin and tar paper, quickly collapsed. All stores and public transportation were shut down inside the city. Thus, 60’s definitely is the milestone on redevelopment of Stanley for the Government. Tanka the Fishermen who rely on the sea for their living have experienced huge changes in the past 50 years. The amount of fish catches these days is nothing compared to the early days. Due to the water pollution, typhoon suffering also the younger generation no longer stays in the fishing industry which urge them settle onshore for a better job opportunity. Visitors walk along the museum’s main route “Kwan Tai Road” led by ah Kwan could get back to the roots and discover the unseen history with those fascinating Folklores.
