HongKong lsland, Sham Shui Po was near the boundry between China and British manged area. After year and year, Sham Shui Po was one of the oldest developed town in HongKong. This proposal was an urabn mixed use development at Sham Shui Po for 23 clients to give a new typology in old urban structure. The site was situated in a single plot which is nearby Nam Cheong Street.

during Colontial period,
at the period of 60's to 70's at HongKong, cinema list as a recreational amenity that the Ouline plan regualte by Lands Development Planning Committee. In every 1000 peoples should have 38 seats in cinema. The map shows the quantity of cinemas representing the density of population in a small district, thereby no changes of the population today.
the urban grid form at 1890. Sham Shui Po was a commercial center with scattered pattern before the
colonial groverment redevelop. It take almost 50 years from a loosely structure to a tidy grid structure ,and we see the yellow of the 80s. Nowadays, Sham Shui Po is the most complex district in HongKong. The coexisting of creatures ,races have been a mark of Sham Shui Po. We found there are lot of swallow nest(the ball on map), trees and plants that grow out of concrete walls(greenery on map). We found there are different races people live here. The poor live at the center and riches neraby the coastline. The poverty problem surrounding here that some people live in cage. From the model we made, we observaed that there are some roof of those building are connected. We wonder the possibility of a infrastructure on top of those old buildind like a floating cloud.
T h e fusion o f n e w a n d old. In the progress we design a preliminary proposal to express the alley between the building when it has b e e n a fa d e d r u i n . There are lot of curved structure inside of it that we keep the original scene. Something between new and old may coexist. The beauty from unperfection of combining new structure. The introverted way to express the contrast. The other composition of new things within a existing facades .Those Pillars stand freely to create more possibility for client.
The porosity of a urban development. A master layout plan was designed for redevelopment of this
plot in residential and commercial mixed uses integrated 23 clients each other. These 23 clients run their own business to contribute their effort in this community. After the analysis of sham shui po, we access from a plot to other plot though the alley or lane. In a old town planning, these alley could be the vitality of their life or the backstage of a community operation. A urban structure was not only a one single layer flatten on planimetric that we cannot design all the possibility on plan. Then we take the vertical dimension (Z axis )as the consideration to design a more 3-dimensional layout plan. If the overall layout plan was not merely on X and Y axis, then area is not countable for these 23 clients that we have to count it in volumes. There are many many entrance to our garden which are part of the pedestrian walkway to complete the whole of unity. A series of module cubes were integrated each other in simple way A skilled couple in handicraft field inhabit at calm area of Sham shui Po separate from the dense area by Nam Cheong street. Their contribution of skills giving a second life to the worthless textiles or clothes found surrounding sham shui Po by natural dye. This project was related to the Master layout plan that NO.12 would be my client site.the proposal was build a house including residential part and retail part for their life. At the end of this project , I wonder how my neighbour forming our public realm.
It is all about collaboration. Each cube was belong to 23 client. Someone have 2 small cube, someone have 1 big cube.
The volume of them were similar. The elements between those combination were inspired by the previous model. Lift up the cube for the ground level landscape, creating gap between those cubes a sort of negative space. The main idea was free my client scheme that they could do whatever they want, their own strcuture integrated with the ground landsacpe, the circulation between the neighbour, even they could merge together to share the structure.A sort of idealism of my conceptual development were comprise by there 23 design scheme.
SCENARIO The red color plate means that they are stick each other but involved two person. The green color plate means that they stick together but only involved one person. The red line were the alignment.
The 8 x8 cube combination can move in a 16x16 boundary without any interlocking only if you have discussed with your neighbour.
CASE 1
2 CUBES SIZE:(8x8x8)m
CASE 2
1 CUBE SIZE:(10x10x10)m
The total height of 10x10 cube would be 15m, and 8x 8 cube would be 12m.
For the case of 8x8 cube, the lower cube which is on the g round, it can build an underground. The total height of cube is also 12m.
SECTION There are 23 clients were divide to 3 groups .
Creating space by cut-out and fold the paper. The frame space is a circulation and also a functional meaning. Devide the massing into 4 pieces.Elevate these massing to higer level for privite zone. The space under massing is a extension of pedestrian walkway and incorporate with internal street. v
A s p i r a l m a z e fo r m e d by d o u b l e l a y e r translucent space. Privide zone set at the center, outter space act an enclosure and semi-open for public.
m o d e l configuration Before the clients works not chosen yet ,I rather to try all the possibility of the form based on my master layout plan concept instead of develop on one form only that I could explore more indeed.
THE ENTIRETY OF BUILDING IS ABOUT THE PROPORTION. THE SCALE DEFINES OUR PERCEPTION TO THE BUILDING.
For the reason of sham shui Po historical background, the textile industry was the trend during 50 to 70s. since today, many fabric store
still surrounding our site. Therefore, the worthless fabric become a pollution problem that it cannot be recycled for any use. Besides of the sustaina bility na tural dye, it ha ve an older, more romantic heritage. In the view of humanity, It was not merely a environmental issues but also a perception of natural through the smell, touch and visually which is similar we the materiality in architecture.
The main idea
was simple as a tree house that people of the community would use the tree shade as a shelter. To create a box to live, install many sliding glass panel to connect with the town continuously ,and isolated from outside with blank walls at the upper part for residential, make the ceiling transparent to look up at the blue sky, make the ground of soil to grow the root and raise up the ceiling to growth trees. This building is assembled from only four pieces of walls and a roof. This primitive method just indicates the possibility that people could live in a forest somehow. The architecture which was born in this way shows various scenes between inside and outside. The comfortableness of connecting with outside from a protected place physically.Like the tree protecting us as a shelter, the tree house for enjoy rain and wind but not to defend. There are similarity between forest and community. Wherever we live, there is dynamic environment around us. There are ever-changing seasons, time and weather from the climate. The way of creatures adapt to the surrounding similar to how we adapt to the dense. The plant were intricate, intense, and beautiful, which is a wild concrete city in sham shui po.I let the users go with the big flow from wind, enjoy a slightly difference of weather and create a sort of space connecting the nature, and it can touch people each moment. Afterwards, I question the possible which flexibly adapts to its dense surrounding resemble as the creatures in nature.
Cut the plant m a t e r i a l s t o p i e c e s Fill the pot with double as the plant materials Put the fabric in the pot until color was dark enough. Then b o i l i t s l ow l y Wa s h i n c o l d water and dry it as usual
