ASTORYINSTANLEY Stanleyisamilitarystronghold.Intheendof1930s,theBritishcolonialgovernmentattenttostrengthen thedefenseofHongKongIsland,sotheestablishmentofStanleyBarracksasamilitarypowerhouse.Therewas equippedwiththreeturrets. DuringtheBattleofHongKong,theJapanese228wasbombardedStanleyFort,causingalotofrocksrolled downthetrails,sothemarchblocked.Also,inthemorningofthe20th,theJapanesenavyhadsentthunder andelectricaldestroyertoStanley,butwasthreeconsecutiveStanleycoastaldefenseartillerysalvo bombarded.Twoshipswereinjured,canonlyretreatbackwards. UntilDecember25,1941,StanleyBarracksbecomelastlineofdefense.HongKong'smostdefenseshavebeen dismantled,butthedefendersStanleystillmakeaneffectivedefense,evenrecapturednorthernStanleyMa HangShan.OnDecember26toconfirmGovernorYangMuqideclaredsurrender,JapaneseoccupatedHongKong threeyearsandeightmonths. StanleyBritishforcessufferedheavycasualtiesandangeredtheJapanese.AftertheJapaneseoccupationof StanleyFort,theykilledwoundedBritishattemporaryhospital(St.Stephen'sprimarySchool)andcivilian massacretotal170,andbodiesburiedenlargeTamBay. Atpresent,exceptoneremaingunfirebed,theother2and3hasbeenconvertedintoasatellitecommunications station.ThefortemplacementinStanleywaslistedasahistoricbuilding. StanleyBarracksisstilloneofthebarracksinHongKong.Itsexcellentlocation,threesidesbythesea, theLammaIslandroutebetweenStanleyBarracksandisoneoftheimportantcargoshiproutes,alsoalmost allnavalshipsvisitingHongKongmustpassthroughthischannel.
