It also known as the Opium War and as the Anglo-Chinese War, was fought between the United Kingdom and the Qing Empire over their conflicting viewpoints on diplomatic relations, trade, and the administration of justice for foreign nationals. The war opens a gate for marine trade. Since Qing Empire lost in that war, Hong Kong Island was ceded to UK by Qing according to Treaty of Nanking.

During the battle of Hong Kong in WW II, St Stephen's College became a hospital for rescue. Heavy fighting took place around the College, which was among the last British strongholds to surrender to the Imperial Japanese Army. Japan army butchered health care workers in St Stephen's College when the defense line had failed.

After WWII, the significance of strategy was descended. In terms of local architecture, the atmosphere of environment attract traveler. A military zone rapidly changes into tourist area. Nowadays, bar, hotel and western restaurant open in Stanley.

The Second Opium War was a war pitting the British Empire and the Second French Empire against the Qing dynasty. Kowloon was ceded to British by Qing according to Convention of Peking. The rule allowed western missionaries lease and buy land to build church and western facilities, the action should be beneficial to consolidating Victoria Harbour.

In initial stage of World War II, army of the Empire of Japan attacked British Hong Kong. Japan's army came down to Stanley from Guangzhou. Their act of aggression was met with stiff resistance from Hong Kong's garrison, composed of local troops as well as British, Canadian and Indian units. Stanley was a final defence point.

Soldiers and victim were buried in Stanley Military Cemetery by Hong Kong government. Furthermore, monument simultaneously was erected up.

Since the geographic location is perfect, British army constructed a military facilities on South Island to defend invasion from Empire of Japan. Built originally to serve the Armed Forces, the south side has been becoming a forbidden ground.

In 26th December, British's army surrendered in Stanley when governor of Hong Kong had announced to surrender. Empire of Japan totally occupied HK 44 months (1941 - 1945). Stanley's military facilities were captured by Japan's army.

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT- PART OF THE LOCAL

Stanley's fishing village group was built on the coast line, it as a collage state to proliferate as time goes on. Western style villa was built beside the local building group.

The elevation view of village assumes stair-step form, they won't change excessively the landform, this is a way to respect nature.

The success of Stanley's tourism is based on the atmosphere of Chinese and Western culture, but the local fishing village was disappeared by vicissitude. The essence was captured again, to be a part of History and Heritage Centre.

Trusses can achieve the design requirement, roof is raised and unity to cover the below blocks, it look like a groups to consist on the coast line.

Since the sea breeze always hammer fishing village, the steel sheet roof was faced on sea, it is built together to resist the wind by local residents. You can view it as an individual house, which also can be thought as a whole stuff.

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT- PART OF THE WESTERN

MIXTURE

Military barrack was constructed on the southernmost mountain. Soil was shoveled by army headquarters. The proportion of level ground is larger than local village.

What is Paragenesis ? (It is a petrologic concept meaning an equilibrium sequence of mineral phases, the origin of minerals or mineral deposits in contact so as to affect one another's formation.) Two polar cultures and entity(architecture in Chinese & Western) affect together in the same place, they produce a new mixture (Culture and building). Additional result Utimate result Stanley becomes a tourist zone due to Stanley becomes a new special culture, western and historical atmoshere. Tranditional chinese fishing villlage incorporate Western atmoshere.

ENTITY

Stanley is glutted with blended buildings.

P3 part 2 NONENTITY RESTURANT

A larger proportion ground assumes stair-step to be designed for army's training. British design a repeated order for regular barrack.

The repeated order is applied in the regular barracks. Regular pattern flood everywhere including entity and nonentity. The order also appears in Site D where is in front of Murray House. It has representativeness in Stanley. The grid is adopted in the design.

The glass block is pressed low to retain the view of Murray house.

P3

ZigZag circulation and partition setting is applied in the design. Two objects mix together and develop.
