policy inference

This analysis of the laws in Toronto, Sydney and New York demonstrated the integration of urban beekeeping in the city fabric to illustrate how architecture can respond to the declining number of honey bees.

Common observations across all laws • The amount of bee boxes allowed within a limited area is monitored by the state • All new bee boxes are registered with a governing body • The governing body is responsible in overlooking the maintenance of the laws set. • Community acceptance is important and all cities require urban beekeeper to not only follow the laws but also ensure that the bee boxes don’t create any disturbance in the neighbourhood. • Sale of honey on a small scale is allowed, this helps encourage citizens to pick up the activity as a hobby. • Bee clubs and associations are promoted and often tie up with the governing bodies to conduct training for fledgling beekeepers. • The clubs in the city also play an important role in educating the community.
