The Saga Of Vishrambaug
Essence Of The Built Form Vishrambaug Wada is a perfect example of beautifully designed and decorated mansion reflecting the Maratha Architecture and it's aesthetic achievements. It is also spatially and structurally balanced structure. The introvert nature of Vishrambaug Wada could be reflected by smaller and lesser number of openings on the exteriors and distinct public, semi-private and private spaces accounting for the defensive nature adopted by the administrator-warriors. The entire layout expressed gendered division of spaces. The Phadacha Chowk, the first open courtyard encountered on entering through the Dindi Darwaja, was the centre of the male dominant spaces like Sopa and Diwankhana. These were semi-private and semi-open in nature with timber columns and more fenestrations. Similarly, the Khasgicha Chowk was the centre of
female dominant spaces like Swaypakghar and Majghar which were all enclosed spaces with brick walls and lesser fenestrations. The concern for the privacy and protection of women is accounted by these along with enclosed staircase as opposite to the open ones in the male dominant part. Located between these two is the Khalbatkhana and the Baithakicha Chowk common for males as well as females. The spaces were also adaptive for various culturally important festivals. The Balcony used for Gudi Padwa, Chowk in Bramhasthan for Ganesh Chaturthi, Khasgicha Chowk for Haldi-Kumkum in Navratri were a few of them. All in all, the life surrounded the cultural and traditional practices.
LEGEND
LEGEND
Current Times The Vishrambaug Wada stayed the residence of Peshwas until they were defeated and conquered by the East India Company. The Wada with it's indigenous design yet innovative use of materials and unique ornamentation made it an architectural marvel. Ever since it's capture by the East India company, it has been adaptively reused till date. Efforts to conserve the historic essence of the Wada are continuously made by the historians under the Heritage Corridor the new East India Company in Pune started the Hindoo college in the Wada to facilitate the learning of Sanskrit, agriculture, engineering and other streams
Plan. The conservation is set to be carried out in three phases, starting with the double storeyed mansion where the Peshwa is said to have lived. It is said that the original bricks of the Wada are specially being recreated and also some of the windows, wooden pillars and motifs. Red tiles on the sloping roof and the courtyard, which is a typical feature of Maratha architecture, will be retained.
the eastern wing of the Wada was destroyed by arson

The surface of bamboo materials is smooth, lightweight and flexible, with natural and gentle color, clear and beautiful texture. It can easily be bent, making it an ideal material for making handicrafts that prominently reflect the culture of the community.
• • •
Bamboo and cane crafts of Meghalaya include bamboo mats which are made from thin strips. These mats are used to furnish walls. The mats are fixed to wooden strips of bamboos. An array of baskets that involve the artistic baskets like 'meghum khoks' are made in Meghalaya. These baskets are also named as 'thugis' which are used to store different day to day items.

Wooden post foundations can only be used for lightweight structures, that is buildings made of timber, bamboo and/or other vegetable material. • The main drawback of using timber for foundations is the risk of weakening due to attack by insects (mainly termites and beetles), fungus and rodents. Hence, protective measures are taken by using rodent blockers. • Timber posts can be driven into the ground, if the climate is predominantly dry, the site is well drained and destructive biological agents (mainly termites) are not common in the area.
