NEW BEGINNINGS
AOA WRAPPED VOL. III
2021-2022
Hola Academites ! A fresh fledging start for all the new comings after a long and tedious pandemic; The sight of determinant adjustment to offline college be it for the rookie juniors or those working on their thesis, or be it watching the council run around in a frenzy to make this year's confluence a blast; An ecstatic beginning of finally seeing everything from a second dimension to a third dimension. The past year 2021-2022 marked the most awaited switch from the online medium to the offline mode with the original AOA vibe. While the former taught us all quite new skills and made us realize the importance of physical interaction, the latter was welcomed warmly with the "online batch" students getting acclimatized to the college in their second year beside their juniors and the seniors reliving their college days. Academites enthusiastically reinvented the college experience that gave a break to the new batches within academic and non-academic activities. Despite the sudden transformation in the routine, the accomplishments were as applaudable as always, making Academy proud. This was made possible by the encouraging nature and immense efforts of the faculty and the Principals Ar. Suresh Singh Sir and Ar. Sulakshana Ma'am. A huge thanks for their efforts. Where the college is also getting a contemporary face all the students, class representatives, editorial representatives, cultural representatives, Niche team and the Student council looks back as well as honor new beginnings, we wrap this year. Aoa Wrap might be an end to this dynamic year, but for us it's a new beginning full of zeal. Hope this yearbook brings to you the memories of the reincarnation of the 'Life at AOA' and keep up our spirits for the year to come! Thank You, Niche Team, Academy of Architecture, Mumbai
EDITOR’S NOTE
Rachana Sansad’s Academy of Architecture is one of the oldest architectural institutions in India, and has been a launching platform for the country’s most prominent and celebrated architects and designers; we are fortunate to welcome a very eclectic mix of students every year, who contribute largely to our culturally vibrant group of students. It is important to note that our magazine, NICHE is a publication which is managed by the students, for the students and of the students. During the Academic year 2021-22, AoA has witnessed
Ar. Sulakshana Bhanushali
a lot of challenges due to Covid-19 pandemic and the consequences of the lock-downs. Through all the upheavals, the student community and the NICHE team have been diligently
persevering
to
put
together
the
publication,
upholding high standards of content, representation and graphics. I really appreciate the efforts taken by the NICHE team in collaborating to produce this magazine, in a digital as well
as
printed
format,
showcasing
events,
academic
achievements, co-curricular and curricular work of the student community of AoA.
PRINCIPAL’S
Academy of Architecture has always aspired to nurture fearless, conscientious and sensitive designers that can make their mark in the profession and set new benchmarks of relevant and sensible architectural productions. In the year 2021-22, despite the ambiguity of Covid our faculty and students efficiently adapted to the new medium and their collective efforts showed brilliant results in the form of accolades received for the impeccable performance in thesis. Suresh M. Singh
From citations and special mentions in the IIA, NIASA and the Charles Correa Gold Medal, to securing the Best Undergraduate Thesis at COA-NIASA, to winning the gold at AYDA (ASIA'S YOUNG DESIGNER AWARD) and representing the country at an international level, our students have made us proud and put AOA on the global map.

He made sure to make us laugh with every sentence he spoke. The meet screens surely were tiring but the hilarious set by Yash Rathi made us forget of all it! The jokes made the students laugh their hearts out. It was like a stressbuster and a much needed session in the pandemic! Special thanks to Yash Rathi and his hilarious jokes!

The proposal was to design a covid responsive school based in Gurgaon, Delhi which was evolved using the conceptual ideas of addition, subtraction and stacking of LEGO BLOCKs. Emphasis on the assembling properties of lego and the playfulness it adds is looked at and thus further used as a designing tool. Classroom blocks are made movable allowing for flexibility in its configuration. These properties make the nature of the campus playful and innovative. 33

Master planning of the entire site is elaborated via the drawings. The campus offers a multi faceted activities associated built structures as colored boxes. The campus stretches on a vast stretch of land and thus the built structures is placed centrally and massed with the greenscape around.
For the classroom block, the classrooms fully functional during the day could be then further joined with the rooms of extracurriculars to make one larger space area to cater to the social distancing norms, when required and have a larger functional area.

The Arcade Academy, an institution situated in the city of Gurgaon, instilled with the spirit of the haveli courtyards, synergised with modern-day steel technology imbibed in every facet seeks to create a paradigm that is rooted in the Indian context while being a part of a global dialogue. The masterplan integrates the built, unbuilt areas with landscape planning and spatial strategies. The 73-acre campus has a diversity of forms which gives different character to each builtform. These structures are linked to each other through a diverse network of vehicular and pedestrian paths shaded with trees, fruit orchards, medicinal plants along with pavilions that help create a vibrant campus and provide opportunities for outdoor learning.

The Idea of steel as an artistic expression has been conveyed through the usage of various load transferring systems and applications which adds playfulness while expressing the form and function. Steel has enabled an enormous amount of ambition to turn to reality. It has equipped us to express the concept and form in an artistic, contemporary and innovative way, making it more expressive, flexible and sophisticated while offering an economical and aesthetic solution to the construction design of this school.

FITS AND MISFITS BEYOND OUR BOUNDARIES
Breaking stereotypes can be transformative for both, the dauntless ones who defy them, and the deferential ones who accept them. It stimulates uncharted thinking that widens perspectives, taking us past the assumed and absolute theories, to a world free from judgment.
BREAKING STEREOTYPES 39
The dialogue was an eye-opener, where we understood that being a misfit in a world full of fits is a great and unique quality. Standing up for what you believe in was the key takeaway from this informative dialogue. ADNAN NICHE REPORTER

The speakers gave us a better insight into architecture in its most sustainable form. It was a great realisation about the actual conditions and challenges that architects face and motivation to stand up against those challenges. SHARAYU NICHE REPORTER
Ar. Aman’s design ideology of defining spaces using voids was intriguing. His simplification of design to evoke the feeling of vastness and awe taught us a different method to design structures. SARVESH 2A

PERCEIVING SPACES The evolution of Architecture across the ages has strived to enhance and redefine the notion of habitable space. Be it the interiors or exteriors, space at the start as a whole can be an open canvas or a crowded palette of thoughts solely depending upon the workflow of every designer. Both of these pathways offer a lot of potential for building one’s narrative on what truly defines space.
SENSORIAL INTERVENTION
The dialogue inspired the ‘to be architects’ to look at the world from a different perspective. It was a well-detailed analysis of how light could be used to shape and nurture the experiential behaviour of a space. MOHIT 2A 40

As a first year coordinator, every year resonates of spirited individuals, restless thoughts, fascinating conversations and fidgety friendships. The first year batch of 2021-22, we call them our Troopers, hustled their way around under construction studios and a non existent campus to display great dexterity. We played games, watched films, dreamt of dystopian futures, negotiated for space, travelled, fought over social issues, agreed and disagreed. We tried. I can proudly say that our tribe is growing richer in thoughts and stronger in action. I am fortunate to have worked closely (literally) and thrilled to see off this brave and feisty bunch of budding designers as they transition to the new academic year.

After 2 years of lockdown and minimal interaction with the outside world our college began on a windy morning in December. Seeing 60 new faces was overwhelming, but our orientation programme made it much easier! And from there began our adventurous journey of ARCHITECTURE! Getting acquainted with 'The Tapri" to confessing our Top 3 from the class, seniors made sure that we were being entertained. From Freshers’ round to the Freshers’ party and our 1st ever JURY and our STUDY TRIP! We made it! The course is difficult but seeing those 60 faces every morning makes this a lot easier.
#THUG_CUBS
JUHI PRASAD It was a great year interacting with students full of energy and passion for the field. From day one when we met the first-yearites till today when we are preparing for the study tour documentation, they have put in a commendable effort given the circumstances and earned noteworthy appreciations for projects like the ‘Formwork: orientation program’, form exploration on David Umemoto’s Principlesa, etc. and I am sure they will continue working with the same energy and dedication henceforth.

Wishing this batch, to continue the never-give-up outlook and enjoy this course Offline! :)

The most awaited moment of the second year was to experience the college life we had heard our seniors describe, ever so fondly, on numerous occasions. While it was a challenging shift from the online medium, experiencing the studio culture was altogether a surreal experience. From using one another as sounding boards during the design process and sharing tiffins in the canteen to getting our gigantic panels pinned up for the jury, we were thankful to be able to lend a helping hand instead of merely being a digital presence.

AMEY GHOSALKAR The batch is indeed a mix of multifaceted talents. Creativity is at its peak when we talk about them. One semester was too less to be with this batch due to the online to offline switch. This was the first batch who had been in college for the first time in 2nd year directly. But yes that’s when the dp icons on the gmeet started popping out of the screen and then into the studios. The effort put by the batch to raise themselves due to such situations shows the real potential of the batch. I wish this always aspiring batch to do well in the future.

The session 2021-22 was definitely a rollercoaster ride with our first semester being offline. The excitement, meeting everyone for the first time, interacting with the mentors on one to one basis and actually experiencing architecture college without the laptop screen acting as a medium. We hit a lot of roadblocks on the way with the construction and the third wave but in the end it all was worth it once the semester was over and we all could catch up on our sleep 46

For this particular batch I have been the year coordinator for 2 year back to back. They have been a brilliant class in the 2nd yr, but have equally troubled me in their 3rd yr (blaming the online to offline shift). From asking for numerous extensions to almost disowning the class towards the semester end, this class has been one of my favourite classes. Best of Luck to all of them in their future endeavours.

We as the "Not so Online" batch spent three semesters online. The sudden transition to offline college had a "je ne sais quoi" factor to it. The experience was familiar yet different as we were entering college as seniors along with a bright set of juniors. Vis-a-vis discussions, the struggles of getting printed sheets, punctuality to studios, and physical juries in the daunting University Semester, were something we tried our best to keep up with laughter, tears, and memories.

KARAN DANDA The journey of Architecture is a long and enduring process of moulding oneself. I personally find the third year to be a very crucial point of this journey where one may lose hope and question themselves or propel themselves into the type of Architect they want to become. I’ve had many ups and downs with the batch this year where we planned tours but couldn’t manage because of Covid. Regardless everyone did their best to deliver great projects! Kudos

Following some of the most stressful years of our teenage lives, we never realized when we had stepped into our adulting phase? College happened, new schedules, old assignments and soon the art gallery became our place to live. Fortunate, we could experience the first year in college. Made innumerable memories, had our first lasts and some lasts did last. Today these long lost memories stare back at us. The few moments we shared were more than enough to bring us back in our true spirit. Now we stand even stronger, as a class, even more determined. Hoping for a thousand more Goa trips and a billion more memories over the next two years.

After one entire year of distance and longing, The Google meets and zoom calls bridged the gaps to take care of our bonding. Away from each other yet connected by whatsapp and calls Each and every lecture, we can't say we didn't attend together with all Who knew the next semester would bring us closer to the reality of the world, And then we'd have only 365 days to enjoy with our friends our own little world.

NITESH AVHAD It was great to be a class in charge of a bunch of unique, talented, and eager to learn students. They took initiatives in class actIvities with enthusiasm and also encouraged others to do the same. They were imaginative and creative with great ideas for every task. Thank you for all the great memories and I am quite sure you will have a bright future ahead. Be focused, diligent, and stick hard to your values.

From getting overwhelmed by the new 'online normal' to getting used to it and mastering gmeets, jamboards, Google slides etc. ,we as a batch had a fun time navigating through a semester long 4th year. We struggled, yet managed to have fun despite the 'low FSIs', overcame the 'setbacks', and eventually 'built up' a stronger bond as a class. The Six months’ internship was one of the best experiences of our journey through architecture so far. After a wonderful, enriching experience at our internships we all are back, loaded with enthusiasm to give our best shot for 'one last time!' 50

Really grateful to have been on this post, it gave me opportunity to step out of my comfort zone and do something for the college. From brainstorm new events to organising amazing events, this has been a wonderful year. Lastly if you are reading this line, you are good human being because you read the entire thing. Thank you !
Its been a hell of the ride since the first day of the campaign till handing over the baton to the next council. I was fortunate enough to have my team's constant support. Lastly if you are reading this line, it only means that you are good human being because you read the entire thing, Thank you Aashi for the line . What an honor it was to be at this position. What made it worth it was the smiles that we got to witness in all the chaos of managing things. This was a year filled with great teamwork, amazing events and lots of drama. May there be bliss like this in all the years to come for Academy. Love you all, Thank you! Cultural Head

The entire year was one hell of a roller coaster ride. Taking back a bag full of memories and learnings. From times that felt like i can't do it anymore to let's get this done by hook or crook , are the experiences that I am going to miss the most. In all, a wholesome experience with the greatest team in support, I am glad I got to be a part of it.
Filled with gratitude to be a part of the Student Council.. This post has been full of hard work, making posters, curating an exhibition offline and then doing it online, whimpering about the color palette, layouts, and font size. Lastly meeting some truly amazing and talented people. It's been the ride of a lifetime and Shukriya, I will always cherish it !!!

it was an honour for me to organise Academy's first ever National Competition. I also had the chance to witness and support some of the best achievements in various competitions and I really hope that in the coming years we reach new heights. I am indebted to all of my Student Council colleagues for making the year memorable.
I've learned a lot and created many memories during my tenure. The most valuable lesson for me was how to plan a national competition from start to finish. Definitely a trip I'll remember for the rest of my life!

LAST 2 WEEKS OF COLLEGE
College is ending. Emotions are rising. Stress levels are shooting up. Sleep graph is taking a dip. Eye-lids are pleading to shut. Laptop chargers are whispering they will burn to death. It is that time of the year. Let us look at the inferences of our fellow academites in a graphical medium (Ofcourse, drawing is our language right?)

Another year done and dusted. Another method of teaching experienced. Another medium of learning unlocked. Another group of friends met. Another conversations happened over the cup of chai/coffee at Madhya’s. Another set of portfolios submitted. Another yearful of enthusiastic students graduated. Another year full of aspiring Architects enrolled. And another year of Niche taking care of spreading information, knowledge, fun, excitement and enthusiasm accomplished. At Niche, we went through two different phases. The first phase was online where all of us were vibing in front of our laptop screens and working along with each other. Where we spent a few nights gossipping and learning a little more about the Niche-ians. And on the contrary, another phase where we all sat next to each other without the barrier of our laptop screens and had what we call in pure terms- fun. It was a successful year with a bunch of learnings. Be it the introduction of Nichu to the release of “AOA: College Coming” or “Baby Niche” , this bunch of people became the reason for a successful year! Total ‘dil-se’ words have been noted above because we all will miss this team! A big warm hug from the Niche family to all the Academites! Signing off, Niche Family!
