NOTE FROM THE EDITORS Hello, are we audible and visible? The year 2020-21 has been a new experience for all of us with the Online Platforms and ‘Work-from-home’ in pajamas becoming the new normal as we mask up and prepare ourselves for the new academic year. This yearbook is a culmination of the memories that we have created online, hence we present to you the AOA#WRAPPED2020-21. Reminiscing the Online Platform and interfaces of education, the yearbook revisits the memories of the year spent virtually. Academites have dwelled with the new medium not only in organizing intra college events but also Competitions, Webinars and Workshops to bridge the gap of extra curricular knowledge. All the events and sessions have received an extremely amazing response from the students, with numbers often exceeding our auditorium capacity! This was made possible by the active involvement of all the students, Class representatives, Editorial representatives, Cultural representatives, Niche team and the Student Council as one collective body. Let us all continue keeping our ‘Josh High’ and make ‘college from home,’ an interesting and productive experience for ourselves. A great thanks to our principals Ar. Suresh Singh sir and Ar. Rohit Shinkre sir, our faculty 1 members and all the students for giving us an opportunity to work and give something back to AOA. The yearbook - AOA #Wrapped2020-21 comprises of the initiatives that the entire student body has undertaken along with the memories that we would cherish forever! Hope you enjoy reading it. Thank you! Editors, AOA #Wrapped2020-21

PRINCIPALS’ ADDRESSALS

Over the last 15 months, Covid-19 has relentlessly affected every part of the education system in India. All institutions imparting architectural education in Mumbai were equally affected. We, at Academy of Architecture declared a shutdown during February 2020. What began as a two week closure is still continuing.

Fortunately for us, we had already planned to introduce various modules for imparting education from the academic year 2020-2021. Both the semesters had modules comprising of first six weeks theory lectures then four weeks of integrated theory and studios and the last eight weeks of design studios. The entire academic year 2020-2021 was conducted through an online mode including the conduct of semester examinations. After meeting the initial challenges of online mode of teaching and learning, we at AoA were able to move ahead with time. In spite of the pandemic, the students from the batch 2020-2021 have shown exceptionally good performances in academics as well as in co-curricular and extracurricular activities. This year book is able to catch the glimpses of all such activities.

AOA#WRAPPED 2020-21

The past year has tested us all; individuals, families, communities, nations have had to deal with the worst crises of our lifetime. It has raised very pertinent questions and shaken us out of our certitudes. It is not just a sanitary crisis, it has disrupted all aspects of our life-including education.

Should we continue with ‘normal’ activity in this situation? Should we pause and if so for low long? Should we proceed with our pedagogical project of integrated course delivery and Module system? There were no easy or right answers… Looking back at the past 15 months, I can only feel pride for all that we have done. We have learnt new ways to go about our tasks, to interact, seminars, studios, submissions, examinations, juries, assessment, results… all online and on time. We have continued all curricular and co and extracurricular activities, and like every year; we have done more than the previous one. We held our banner high in prestigious national and international forums. Clearly- it takes more than a pandemic to put us off track. The students, the student’s council, faculty members and staff of AoA can be proud. I take this opportunity to express my deepest sympathies to students and colleagues who had to face untimely personal loss in this period. This yearbook is testimony to the extraordinary courage and resilience shown by all at AoA. AR. ROHIT SHINKRE Principal I/C, (Section B)

EVENTS CONTENTS Plus Week Talent Hunt Cultural Events Mr. and Ms. Freshers E-Games Design Dialogues Courtyard Dialogues Thesis Symposium

An entire academic year working from home, has officially come to an end. It has been an interesting and different journey, navigating the year through virtual meetings. Despite these challenges, we have managed to avoid the monotony of online lectures by coming together and having fun through the new modes of interaction. We delved into a variety of realms that the online medium allowed us to explore, including games nights, movie screenings, class pictures, scavenger hunt, e-sports and talks. The abundance of events have been completely overwhelming with the enormous amount of participation and zeal among all of us! The spirit has been kept alive and we all shiver with excitement when “BOL ACADEMY HALLA BOL” echoes in our minds while reliving the AOA NAARA!

CONFLUENCE 2020-21

Furnishing with an opportunity, the pandemic had us exploring new arenas beyond the physicalities, and this year we welcomed the first-ever online AOA Confluence 2021, which marked its presence on the virtual platform. The exhibition implored us to revisit and reimagine our learnings and experiences and find innovative ways to showcase them. It helped us to mould our understanding of architecture as a whole and introduced us to challenges never met before. The entire curation was an outcome of these events, which motivated us to think, design, and represent differently. In the past few months, our bond towards Academy is what kept us all together. The Confluence week was a celebration of this essence and took us back to reminisce the true spirit of Academy with the lined up events!

THE JURY PANEL

RETHINKING THE AMPHITHEATRE AREA Academy’s first ever design competition In Academy’s long history of 64 years, the amphitheatre has grown undeniably to become so much more than just a space in our campus. It has become a symbol of Academy’s culture. The banyan tree too, has been a lot more than just a tree. To our dismay, the tree no longer survives in its original glory! What will this representation look, feel, and act like? Design your vision of Academy’s renewed Amphitheatre.

ACADEMY’S ALCOVE - WINNER

The proposed design intervention at the Academy's Amphitheatre aims to enhance the quality of space, student faculty interaction and at the same time to provide a soothing space for the students. The new proposed seating is expanded a bit radially and notches have been made to accommodate more people to sit. The plinth is designed as free flowing space which is symbolic to the liberal and free minds of the students. The idea is also to use the space to allow for more interaction between the students and faculty through lectures and discussions. The proposed canopy over the plinth is to provide a shade so that it can be used throughout the day.

HALLA BOL : THE VOID’S VOICE - 1st RUNNER UP

The tree no longer survives in its original glory, but it’s essence sure will. Taking the phrase “Life comes a full circle” way too literally, our aim was to give an ode to the space that the tree occupied and upheld for all these years by leaving it entirely empty, for its prestige and permanence are irreplaceable. The intervention includes a circular void in place of the current plinth with the amphitheatre redesigned, staying true to its name, by providing levels which sprawl along the magnanimous area while ensuring that it caters to both large as well as smaller groups of people to find their space.

RACHANA’S DIARY - 2nd RUNNER UP

Rachana’s Diary is a personal-public diary , in the form of petals, constituting clusters to mimic the iconic tree of Rachana Sansad College. Students are meant to write, rewrite, draw, scribble what they want or feel. It is a small memento, recording your thoughts periodically. Due to area constraints i.e, less availability of open spaces, the intervention was decided to be proposed on a elevated height. In order to maintain dignity and glory of the iconic(fallen)tree , the diary is designed to mimic the tree as well as establish the beginning of a new age.

From Pin-ups to AVs! Over the years, the Confluence has been an overview of all the academic and extracurricular work produced during the year. This year was marred by unpredictable circumstances, and yet we witnessed it taking place on a virtual medium. This carefully curated a collection of works highlighting the hard work and rigour the students poured into their work, day in and day out, turning their homes into personal studios. COLLEGE CLUBS Music Club Sketching Club Food Club Software Club Dance Club Literary Club Cinematography Club Photography Club Social Club Movie Club PR & Marketing Club

The year was tough for all of us as we switched from prints to presentations. However, clubs got us all together, on one platform and college did not seem so far away anymore! Throughout the year, the engagement of these clubs kept us active and it provided us with a good departure from the mundane online academic submissions. We acclimatised ourselves to a virtual mode of enjoyment and celebrated all events together just like we would if we were present in college physically. Through these clubs, we developed interactions with those who are like minded and with those who have a different taste, too. It became a vital platform for AOA to express its creativity and talents. Here’s a recap of all the fun events we planned across the academic year!

REWIND MEMORIES

Academites create tons of memories throughout their years at Academy. With the amount of time they spend together, classmates become second families, and the moments spent with batchmates and seniors alike become indispensable. While the online year came with its own set of restrictions, the interactions between the students continued, be it through google meets in place of physical hangouts. The students enjoyed fun events and also worked their way across a number of obstacles, standing side-by-side, or more aptly, sitting screen-by-screen. These digital momentos will forever remain etched in our memories.

1A Saying that this academic year has been unconventional, will be an understatement. As first years, we never imagined that our college would be reduced to Google meets, Classroom assignments, and Miro boards. Not meeting our classmates and faculty in person has created a sense of suspense over everyone's personality in real life. The assignments and studios turned out to be novel and interesting, compelling us to look at things in a different light. The go-getting attitudes of the faculty and the sincerity of the students has made this year fun and memorable.

Echoes of the year gone by have been engaging, inquisitive, curious and whimsical. Much to my pleasant surprise the musings are sweet and full of gratitude. I am grateful to this bright bunch of 2020, that has powered through the uncertainty of current times and displayed their prowess as young, dependable individuals. I am grateful that nothing stops your indomitable spirit to learn. I am grateful for your faith in the system and belief in the ones who guide you through it. I am grateful for the support you receive from your kin. I am grateful for the hungry-to-experiment-&-learn team of educators I have and a rock-solid Principal! Thank you for marking the silver lining in this dark year. May you shine ever so brightly! 76

1B Being a first year student in architecture in an online medium was definitely a challenge for all of us as a class but what made it easier were our mentors helping us in every way possible. Even though the year was cut short a bit, our mentors made sure that we learnt almost everything that a first yearite should know. We all were pretty new to the pressure and it did take us some time to adjust. Knowing each of our classmates was quite difficult but we stayed united and tried to help each other as much as we could. All in all, it was a different and a good experience. Can’t wait to see what college will be like when we start with our physical classes.

In life one wonders, what is the furthest we can push human adaptability to before it actually snaps! The validity of our physical environment is a daunting issue in the current context of our increased existence in the virtual realm. Each one of you have demonstrated a certain level of optimism towards the advocacy of this issue by embarking upon this journey through the course of Architecture. The fair winds building up in your sails, just beginning to push you into momentum, remember perseverance & rigour will take you a long way, bon voyage! 78

2A Our journey through the second year has been rather memorable. Although conducted online, the liveliness of being in a physical studio wasn't lost with group project meets. Due to the online medium of teaching, we were bound to learn various softwares and digital representation techniques. This in a way helped us save a lot of paper that would be otherwise be used in physical classes. This entire online schedule gave us flexibility of time at space. We carved ourselves a mini Academy inside our homes. The council conducted various fun events and activities to liven up the Academy spirit.

The year has been a struggle for everyone of us. Considering all the struggle, this batch of Second Year 2020-2021, has come a long way in this online medium of learning from where they left the physical classes in their first year. Bridging this gap from physical to online was not only difficult for them but also for us as faculty, but this batch took it as a challenge and completed it with flying colors. Wishing this batch a great year ahead and many more to come. Best of Luck.

2B On 13th March, it was announced that all the colleges would be closed for 15 days. Everyone was so happy to get these unexpected holidays but little did we know that they would last for more than a year. However relaxing it was to avoid train travels or waking early in the morning, the absence of meeting all our dear friends was still felt to heart. Google meets helped in connecting us with each other as well as with the faculty. But the joy of actually seeing and meeting each one of our friends can't be gained through online mode. Hoping that things go back to normal soon. Till then we are all together and as a team.

amey.ghosalkar The 20-21 online experience for

teaching and learning was really unique. Teachers became students learning online systems and students learned to mute and unmute at the right time, keep videos on and off, and be at home. Being online this batch has really taken efforts to adapt and grasp whatever was taught to them. I could never forget that moment when all the students from the batch had my profile picture on my birthday on google meet and they offered me an awesome birthday card. This was the special mark that this batch had on my mind. I wish this always aspiring batch to do really well in the future.

3A Lockdown after lockdown followed by one more and then another Who knew we’d stay away from each other for almost an entire year. 3B Had we known that March 13th was the last day of us meeting physically, would we have cherished that day a little more? From waking each other up post-lectures to leave the meet, To Whatsapping answers mid lectures, We finally got the CLASS UNITY tag! How much we missed “mei ghar ja rahi hu” and working amidst a speaker playing the best songs interrupted by weird laughter! But, had online classes not happened, we would have never learnt the importance of 11:59pm and sharing a tab, not the full screen! 4A With the relentless hope of offline college, we began our 7th semester. Having skipped university exams, we felt a cloud of luck looming over us. With that confidence, we stepped in the shoes of our seniors. Each morning, we imagined what it would feel like to go to college, greet people in the lift and watch the morning-people very courageously take the staircase. We had pictured our fourth year differently for it seemed to be a deserved break between the 3rd and the 5th years. To imagine that another year at the Academy comes to an end breaks our hearts, but the hope of one last year lifts our energy multifold!

4B In the early stages of the LOCKDOWN, we were really beaming with joy as we were fortunate to have skipped the terrific milestone of our architecture life. With every passing day, our joy reduced as we were losing the hopes of the 4th year which we had envisioned. We ended up joining the meet as we woke up from the bed and woke each other up just before the attendance, sending answers on whatsapp and staying on another call while the meet was still on. The aspiration of coming back to AOA (physically) is COHESIVE and UNANIMOUS and we know that we will come back and it will be as CRAZY as ever.

Learning from home can be difficult. I thought students might have even lost the desire for learning. But on the contrary, students ended with a satisfying academic performance showcasing their ability to adapt to the change. Low internet bandwidth, studying in isolation can be frustrating sometimes but given the flexibility of accessing teachers and recorded lectures, no rushing to college for morning attendance students might consider online learning in future too. However, I hope they don’t get too comfortable in this online medium. Honestly, who would not prefer an online exam and that too in pyjamas? 90

I think learning what not to do is more important than learning what to do in architecture academics.

In these 5 years, I learnt life. And I am eternally grateful for that.

Peer learning is just as valuable as academic learnings; seen it and lived it!

Serah Yatin College years have given me life long friendships and precious memories to cherish always!

Neha Karwa I’m looking forward to the future, and feeling grateful for the past.

5B Yesterday is what brought us to today, another milestone, with good times as well as bad, but what mattered was us riding that roller coaster together. We outgrew the differences in the initial years and ended ganging up as a whole against what we did or did not want! Marking with memories of extreme incidences, to being partners in not knowing what to do, we’ve come a long way, proving enough that ‘legends rise from struggle’! We loved a socially distanced commencement of final year but little did we know we’ll officially be the batch who did the graduation walk: from the bedroom to the kitchen. From Ambassadors of the quote: United we stand, Divided we Fall.

Liked by nitesh.avhad and 41 others nitesh.avhad The Experience with this particular batch has been new in many ways as we faced multiple problems throughout the year and tried to overcome the same. The year started with dialogues which led to creative thinking and this strengthened our base to experiment a broad range of thesis topics which we addressed this year with help of our faculty members. I was especially proud of this batch because of their punctuality and discipline in work that they showed. The last mile run is always important in any race and I think final year is one such year where we stretch ourselves to achieve our best. My best wishes to your wonderful efforts, take care, lots of love and blessings to each of you. 98

AOA Ba

Last Day

It wouldn't be fair play if we don't start by regarding the Class of 2020 (Aided) as a legend- wait for it (we did a lot of waiting) - dary! Apart from officially being the 1st ones ever to give a thesis jury from home, we were also the only ones ever who lived for months in anticipation of it! Standing and living by one mantra "Kuch Nahi Karenge", we as a rebellious class, infamous for being high-headed, broke the AOA stereotype by customising our hoodies in a colour other than black. For a class where most of us were super-competitive yet equally passionate, we made history for being the only ones who headed NASA in their 2nd year and returned victorious with the LeCorb! An achievement as epic as a tale, adding a beautiful golden feather to Academy's hat! As a parting message we'd like to tell our juniors and mentors at Academy, thank you for being the family we didn't know we needed. #AcademiteDynamiteForever

Last Day

Dear AOA, We haven't yet had a chance to wish you a goodbye, it feels only like yesterday when we entered under the green canopy as excited first yearites. Couldn't have imagined then that this small entrance would be our gateway to a whole new world. Your staircases have seen us through from innocent eighteen-year-olds to twenty-three-year-old graduates. Your classroom welcomed strangers and made itself into a home for a family of 40. Our ode to you remains incomplete without a mention of your beginning. The giant tree overlooked many memories being captured and many pockets being emptied (thanks Kumar). Our journey ended abruptly (blame the pandemic), but the time we spent with you was an experience of a lifetime. All we can say now is Thank you. We'll always carry a piece of you and we promise to do you proud. Academites forever, Batch of 2015-20

arely does one get to see an entire batch change its complexion drastically upwards the five years, and this is one of those cases. I clearly remember, the batch started et of average students who would work in their capacity but they eventually worked ay to the top. This batch has given space to many slow learners to come ahead and hrough in their last few years. These students have watched each others back and that much needed support to give a best try for whatever challenge was faced. If I o sum up the identity of this batch in one word, this is the UNBUNTU APPROACH H! It has been a huge learning lesson for me as well while engaging with them across ve years. st wishes to each of these wonderful souls on their journey further in life... Wish you all st for your future...

THE COUNCIL LOGGING OFF!

It was not long ago that we all aspired to have long vacations and get some extra holidays to catch up with our missing sleep and our long-lost friends, and it’s ironic how tables turned, and we all are just dying to get back to seeing each others’ tired and gloomy faces. This year, very different from any ordinary one, has come with its own set of challenges and experiences, and it eased as well as complicated our work in various ways. We, as a council, are proud of everything we achieved, as well as shared some stupendous experiences and moments, but just missed the physical presence of one another and you all. We stand extremely inspired by how all of us stayed as one team, lived all the experiences of a regular year in newer and innovative virtual ways, despite all the distance between us, and kept up the spirit of our AOA family even in a year like this! Halla Bol!

SENIOR COUNCIL

Devansh Maru GENERAL SECRETARY A

I will surely miss the 5 years of Learning and fun at AOA. The entire student body has played a great role in shaping what we are and working in the student council was a great opportunity to give something back to the college and students. The pandemic gave us some very new challenges and we hope we could do some justice to our new roles. Thanks!

109

Nimish Pardeshi GENERAL SECRETARY B

This particular year at the Academy not just compelled us to think differently, it also drove us to achieve various accolades that were never done before. I’m thankful for the outstanding team effort amongst the Student Council and the exceptional support extended by the faculty. I would always be grateful for this opportunity at AOA, being part of the Student Council, it taught me much more than architecture. The memories are vivid and worth treasuring for life.

Neha Karwa EDITORIAL HEAD

It was surprisingly the most productive academic year so far! I really enjoyed being a part of the student council, hopefully contributing to the legacy, while also taking back some learnings and friendships for myself. The lockdown made it challenging, yet very exciting for us, to experiment with newer methods of organizing events and keeping the spirits high. I’m very grateful for this opportunity. Congratulations to the team, y’all are the best!

Atherva Kelkar CULTURAL SECRETARY

I honestly feel AOA has taught me much more than just architecture, and the overall journey of mine has been nothing short of a rollercoaster. This feeling has a lot to do with me being a part of the student council. From standing for the Cultural Co-Head post to signing off as the Cultural Head, that too in a pandemic year where curating events in itself was a challenge, I have learnt so many things and have received tremendous love from the Academites! Will always carry this in my heart.

Manas Patil SPORTS HEAD

The year was something completely unexpected. With the ongoing pandemic it seemed like the sports activities would be restricted but the overwhelming response to the E-Games proved that no matter what, Academites always find a way. It was really great to be a part of the council and even more great being the part of the sports culture of AOA, as it was here that I met the people whom I will cherish forever!

Sushant Nikharge DAC HEAD

I would like to thank the Academy for giving me this opportunity. It was an amazing experience to be part of and contribute to the legacy of AOA. We all were sceptical at the beginning about this virtual year but congratulations to council teams and various clubs for the smooth conduct of events. All the best to everyone. Let the sound of "Bol academy Halla bol, Halla bol, Halla bol" echo till the very end.

AOA#WRAPPED 2020-21

The year has been a roller-coaster ride and this position taught me to turn challenges into opportunities in terms of exploring different mediums and engaging with people within and beyond Academy. The clock had us on our feet all the time while chasing our agendas. The takeaways have been overwhelming with the bonds created amongst the Council-Family, which I would treasure forever!

The tenure as the Outreach Head brought with it a bunch of memories, heated discussions, responsibilities, and a whole lot of experiences. From coordinating with all the teams to posting things on social media, the Outreach team could never stay out of reach! Indeed a journey to cherish for a lifetime.

From making posters, magazines, to editing videos, drafting emails, and designing websites, this post gave me a chance to learn every aspect of “outreach” and different values of life. Hosting cultural events online was something we never imagined. The online platform gave us a lot of opportunities to organize events in a new and unique way.
