Ex-cops found smuggling drugs Police in Saraburi had been expecting to apprehend a drug smuggling ring when they stopped a vehicle in the region on Saturday the 15th of May, however, they couldn’t have anticipated the size of the load. They found four men in possession of hundreds of millions of Baht’s worth of drugs, even more shocking is that two of the men smuggling them were former policemen. The Narcotics Suppression Bureau (NSB) have identified the one-time policemen as 42 year old Prayad Phola and 51 year old Mongkol Phumpipat. The pair, along with two accomplices were found to be transporting 1.2 million methamphetamine tablets (known as Ya ba) and 1,100 bars of dried marijuana weighing 1.1 tonnes, to the Southern provinces.

The NSB were alerted to the criminal operation after receiving a tip off stating that a white pickup truck was being used to transport drugs from Laos to the South of Thailand. They then identified a suspicious vehicle in Nong Khai which matched the pick-ups description. The vehicle appeared to be following another car which was checking the road ahead was clear. After monitoring the situation for some time, police made their move and pulled over the pickup truck in the Ban Mo district of Saraburi. A police press conference was held on the 15th of May showing the sheer scale of the drugs bust. A literal wall of marijuana bricks can be seen as well as packet after packet of methamphetamine tablets. Mr. Prayad is a former police sergeant major officer of Phone Phisai police station in Nong Khai.
He was fired from duty in 2009 after using a police van to illegally transport 156 pangolins to a buyer in Phetchaburi. He was later imprisoned for selling marijuana in Satun in 2011. Mr. Mongkol is a former senior police sergeant major officer of the Ubonrat police in Khon Kaen. He too was dishonourably discharged from police service when he was found to have marijuana in his car in Chumphon. The two other suspects are Sombat Phola, aged 54, and Jakkri Prasertwongsa, aged 32. It is unknown at this time whether there is a family link between Mr. Prayad and Mr. Sombat who share the same surname. What is sure, is that all four men are now facing criminal prosecution and will no doubt receive lengthy custodial sentences if convicted for the trafficking of the Category 1 and Category 5 drugs.

Hospital Bomb Blast
Welcome French Fries
More than 20 wounded in hospital bombing 21 people were injured when a bomb exploded in a hospital in Bangkok on the morning of the 22nd of May. The incident occurred in the dispensary waiting room of Phra Mongkutklao Hospital on Ratchawithi Road. Phra Mongkutklao is an army-run facility which also treats civilians. Given that the blast happened on

a busy Monday morning it is fortunate that nobody was killed in the explosion. Of the 21 people who were injured, 13 have been discharged from hospital while 8 are still under observation. The Commander of the Army Medical Department Lt. Gen. Saroj Keokajee, who supervises the hospital, has reported that most of the victims were retired army officers who suffered shrapnel related injuries. One woman has undergone surgery after being struck in the face when glass partitions shattered. Initially the cause of the blast was unknown, with sources at the hospital suggesting that the poorly maintained air conditioning units could be to blame. However, after inspecting the scene, deputy national police chief Srivara Ransibrahmanakul told reporters that there is strong evidence to suggest that this explosion was caused by a bomb, “We found pieces of a circuit and a battery, as well as some wires”. He continued by estimating that the device had a blast range of 23 metres and may have been put “in a container and placed near the entrance of the dispensary”. The building was immediately put into lockdown as bomb disposal experts and specially trained
sniffer dogs looked for further explosives. Media reports have said that traces of gunpowder were found in a plastic piping while a number of nails were also found which may have been intended to act as shrapnel, but this has not been confirmed by investigators. At this stage it is too early to say whether there is a link between this attack and the bombing at the National Theatre which occurred a week before. During that inci-
dent, 2 women were injured by a low-impact timed explosion. Speaking about the relatively low level of damage caused in that case, the police have suggested that the bomb was used to stir up unrest rather than to cause high numbers of casualties. Government spokesman Lt Gen
Sansern Kaewkamnerd said it was too early to tell whether the hospital bombing was linked to the third anniversary of the coup and the National Council for Peace and Order. Although bombings in Thailand are nothing new, the decision to strike a hospital is particularly disconcerting. As deputy national police chief Srivara Ransibrahmanakul put it, “We condemn the perpetrators. Even in the three southernmost

THURSDAY JUNE 01 - JUNE 15, 2017
The End of Facebook in Thailand? Facebook hopes to avoid immediate closure Facebook is the most popular social networking site in Thailand with over 30 million users, nearly 20 million of whom use it daily. Thai people are also the most active Facebook users in Southeast Asia spending on average more than 2.4 hours a day on the site. It seems surprising therefore, that Facebook may well be on the brink of having its operations in Thailand shutdown. The Thai Internet Service Provider Association (Tispa) is now facing pressure from the government to immediately shut down access to Facebook as the social networking giant has so far failed to remove illicit URLs and posts from
its site. The argument began when the Thai government ordered Facebook to remove 309 posts. The posts in question, are viewed to have defamed the high institu-
tions within Thailand. Facebook’s official policy is to leave all disputed posts intact although it can block users in Thailand accessing posts but only where the posts are clearly in breach of Thai law. In an attempt to resolve the issue, Facebook began reviewing and deleting many of the requested posts. However, as of the 19th of May, 131 of the original 309 posts were still accessible. Tispa and internet gateway providers (IIG), sent an email Facebook Thailand’s managing director on the 19th, stating that “if the relevant Thai authorities find any illegal content from www.facebook.com in our system - particularly the 131 URLs which
have not yet been removed - concerned authorities will request that we shut down the CDN of www.facebook.com and other parts of the network to block such illegal content”.
The Criminal Court of Thailand has signed orders to take down the posts, threatening the Thai Department of Facebook with legal action if they refuse to comply. Some are saying that legal action might not be all that Facebook faces, speculatively the government may wish to shut down Facebook entirely. This would not be the first time that Facebook’s operations have been halted in Thailand. Shortly after the 22nd of May 2014, the government briefly restricted access to the site. Nor is it the first time that the government has wanted more control over internet access. Indeed, there have been numerous calls
from authorities for Thailand to operate within a single internet gateway, which would make it easier for the government to monitor online activity. On the 15th of May 2017, the Na-
tional Reform Steering Assembly (NRSA) called for the Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha to use his powers under Section 44 to establish a cyber-committee that would enable the military and
other government agencies to remotely access networks and computers around the country without court authorization. On the 18th of May, the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) gave Facebook until 10am on Tuesday the 23rd to remove the remaining illegal posts on its site. As of 4pm on Monday the 22nd, Facebook appeared to have blocked more posts, and the number of “illicit webpages” was now less than 100. Speaking at this time, NBTC secretary-general Takorn Tantasith said that “Facebook has cooperated with Thai authorities and Tispa. However, we have learned that some
issues have not been solved yet,” said Mr Takorn. He continues by saying that some content is still available which has been deemed illegal under the National Council for Peace and Order’s (NCPO) directive which Facebook still appear hesitant to remove. Mr Takorm visited the offices of Tispa on Tuesday the 23rd May, to access both sides reaction to the reaching of the deadline set by authorities. As of yet, Facebook’s operations still appear to be fully functional. Let’s all hope that the government and Thailand’s favourite social networking site can reach an accord.

Household debt to hit record high in 2018
New estimates show that the debt of British households will hit an alltime high next year, surpassing the pre-financial crisis peak, as a surge in credit borrowing has financed additional spending in recent months. The average household had unsecured debts amounting to £13,200 at the end of 2016, just below the £13,300 level at the end of 2008, on the eve of the credit crunch. Analysts at the Trades Union Congress (TUC) expect that will rise to £13,900 by the end of this year, £14,300 next year, and keep on rising to £15,400 by the end of 2021. The stats are calculated using 2016 prices and therefore take account of the inflation increases over the years. It comes after Bank of England figures showed households mounted an extra £1.6bn in consumer debts in March. Borrowing rose by more than 10% compared with the same month a year earlier as households increase spending despite the squeeze on living standards which has come from slow wage growth and rising inflation. TUC’s general secretary, Frances O’Grady, said: “We’ve got this problem because wages haven’t recovered. Credit cards and payday loans are helping to prop up household spending for now, but millions of families are running on empty. ”The next government must act urgently to deliver the higher wages Britain needs for sustainable growth. They must boost the minimum wage, and end pay restrictions for public servants like nurses, firefighters and midwives.” In the meantime, the average household’s disposable income rose to £19,106 in 2015, according to the Office for National Statistics. That is up 3.7% on the year, though prices also rose by 1.5% over the same period so the cash figure overstates the improvement in living standards.

supporting other family members, placing additional pressure on their retirement incomes. New research from insurance company Prudential reveals that those dependent on would-be retirees are most often their children (45%), but nearly a quarter of people are aiding their grandchildren’s income. Of those who admitted to giving money to family members, 9% are supporting their parents, while 5% are helping to support grandparents. The financial contributions average at £260 a month, which would represent a substantial squeeze on retirement incomes at a time when inflation is rising and interest rates remain low. Prudential retirement income expert, Kristy Anderson, said that increasing life expectancies meant that pension pots now have to go further than they would have in previous generations. ”However, for those providing financial support to their dependants it is likely to cost them an average of £62,000 over the course of their retirement - accounting for a significant proportion of their pension pot and impacting the income they can expect to live on,” she said. On average, those who said they provide financial support to loved ones said they were helping more than four people. The most common reason for financial aid was to cover everyday living expenses, but 7% of would-be retirees say they are contributing towards housing costs. A similar number of people are financially supporting relatives in longterm care, reinforcing the difficulties families face to pay for social care bills amid an ageing population.
”Recent developments do, however, cast some doubt on the materialisation of a significant reflation in the United States. Financial market sentiment improved over the review period, but risks of further repricing in bond markets remain.” The ECB said government should renew their commitment to controlling their finances to avoid economic instability. ”In some countries where political support for pursuing fiscal and structural reforms was viewed by the markets as waning, investors required additional risk premia on sovereign bonds,” the report said. ”Overall, risks to financial stability stemming from financial markets remain significant, mainly owing to the possibility of a further rapid repricing in global fixed income markets.”

ECB: Eurozone ‘still fragile’ despite growth spurt

The comments came two days after Moody’s downgraded China’s sovereign ratings to A1, saying it predicts the financial strength of the world’s second-largest economy to erode in the coming years, as growth slows and debt continues to build. Moody’s announcement of the downgrade also came with a changed outlook on China from “negative” to “stable”, suggesting no further ratings changes for some time. China has strongly criticised the decision to downgrade its credit ratings, asserting it was based on an “inappropriate methodology”, exaggerating difficulties facing the economy and underestimating the government’s attempts for reform. Senior official at Moody’s Marie Diron on Friday said that the ratings agency has been encouraged by the “vast reform agenda” undertaken by the Chinese authorities to mitigate risks from the rapid rise in debt. Heart Attacks
My father died of a heart attack. It was his third heart attack, and was his final one. He was 56 years of age, and the year was 1976. The sad part of all this, was that his heart attacks could have been prevented, and even sadder, with today’s technology his life could have been saved even with the heart attacks. Heart attacks are caused by the heart muscle starving for oxygen which is carried to the muscle by the arteries. If the blood has enough oxygen in it, then it is up
to the arteries that supply the heart (called the coronary arteries) to get the oxygen there. But if these arteries are blocked then the muscle dies (called an ‘infarction’ or more simply – a heart attack). Modern medicine can measure the amount of oxygen being carried in the blood and what is even better, can see whether the coronary arteries are likely to be blocked, and then measure any blockages. The most usual blockages are
caused by cholesterol, a blood component that can be easily measured. The higher the concentration, the more likely it is that
it will start forming ‘plaques’, the starting point for a blockage. The next step is to find out just how big the blockages are. This can be done by inserting a probe through an artery and directly measuring any blockage. This is called a coronary angiogram. Another method of investigation can be done by CT scanning which directly measures the amount of calcium trapped by the cholesterol plaque. This is a noninvasive way to scan the coronary arteries. So did my father have high cholesterol? We will never know as that blood test wasn’t done! How blocked were his coronary arteries? 50 percent? 90 percent? 100 percent? We will never know as
those tests weren’t done in those days either. All we did know was that he smoked – another item leading to heart attacks (and a lot more besides)! So if his first heart attack had been today, we would have known how high was his cholesterol level, how blocked were his
coronary arteries and would have put in stents to open blockages, or done coronary artery bypass grafting. A lot has happened since 1976. Just a shame he was born too early. Don’t let my father’s end happen to you – get a check-up today.

Buddha Mountain
Elephant Day
One of Pattaya’s most noticeable landmarks is the 130 meters high Buddha Mountain. A huge golden Buddha image is carved on the mountain, which is also called Khao Cheejan and can be seen from miles away. The Buddha image that is officially called Phra Phuttha Maha Wachira Uttamopat Satsada was created in 1996 to celebrat the 50th anniversary of King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s accession to the throne. During the Vietnam War, the Thai Army used Khao Cheejan mountain for it’s mining efforts. The stones were used at U-tapao airport, which it was at the time an American army base. After the war mining continued for

The impressive Sukhothai era Buddha image is 130 meters hing and 70 meters wide, making it one of the biggest Buddha images in the world. Buddha mountain is set in beautifully landscaped gardens. There is a number of salas (open pavilions) and pools filed with lotus flowers giving the place a tranquil and peaceful atmosphere. Thai Exports 6 Year High
Encouraging signs as Thai exports grow globally Thailand’s exports have continued to grow for a second straight month in April rising by 5.7% to an impressive US $73.3 billion, the highest rate of growth since 2011. A global economic recovery sparked increase consumption of Thai products in almost all markets, particularly in China, where shipments in April rose by 20.2%. The rise was also sizeable in other Asian countries. Asean members Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, the Philippines and Brunei saw a combined rise of 17.2%. Exports to South Asian nations rose by 10.5%, while sales to neighbouring Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam were up by7.3%. Gains were also made in other international markets. Shipments to the US rose by a healthy 3.5% with Japan importing 3.3% more Thai products. Speaking about the sustained rise in exports, the director general of the Commerce Ministry’s Trade Policy and Strategy Office Ms. Pimchanok Vonkorpon said, “Shipments fared well in almost all markets…the markets that saw export expansion represented up to 85.4% of the total, indicating
that exports, which are a vital engine of the economy, are in an upward trend.” In fact, only two international markets reported a decline in Thai exports, the presently vulnerable EU market dropped by 1.7%. While the Middle Eastern market imported 7.1% fewer products. The growth appears to be a healthy level currently. On the 22nd of May, the Commerce Ministry stated that customs-cleared outbound shipments rose by 9.2% year-on-year in March and 8.5% in April to $16.9 billion. Higher prices for farm products and oil also had a beneficial effect on Thailand’s exports. Ms Pimchanok said exports of agricultural products rose 11.9% yearon-year in April, reaching $2.83 billion. Shipments of sugar, rubber and rice accounted for much of this gain, with rises of 47%, 41% and 22.7% respectively. Exports of industrial products also contributed to the increase with a 7.9% rise to $13.2 billion. Of this, chemicals (+30%), finished oil (+22.3%), and electronics (+3%) were the largest contributors. April also saw imports rise 13.4% year-on-year to $16.9 billion, yielding a trade surplus of $56.8
million. The Commerce Ministry will be quietly confident of hitting the 5% growth target for exports in 2017, to build on the 0.5% growth of 2016. But industry experts are still aware that there is a long way to go before they start celebrating. US President Donald Trump seems likely to implement more protectionist international trade policies as he seeks to lower the rate of foreign imports to bolster US businesses. To this end, he recently called for an omnibus report on significant trade deficits and Thailand was one of the 16 countries named within the report. The Thai Commerce Ministry recently submitted a report to the US Office of the Federal Register stating that a reduction in US shipments to Thailand and foreign direct investment were the main contributors to Thailand’s trade surplus with the US. Speaking of the US executive order to compile a report, Ms. Pimchanok suggested that the Commerce Ministry will establish a working panel to consider preventative measures against any potential US installed trade barriers. Thailand’s continued growth also depends on other, sometimes uncontrollable factors, such as foreign exchange rates and fluctuating oil prices. For now, the signs of increased growth are good, but there will be plenty to discuss with Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha when he chairs the international trade policy committee meeting on the 26th of May.

NEXT WEEK FOR ARIES: (Born between 21st March & 20th April) A spontaneous decision may require you to follow up with a more in-depth assessment of what you’ve gotten yourself into. Spontaneously volunteering your time to a project may feel good, but you might need to be more businesslike if you’re to gain some advantage from your efforts. A delightful event or meeting could also brighten the days ahead. But the weekend could bring mixed messages or misunderstandings, so take everything with a grain of salt. NEXT WEEK FOR TAURUS: (Born between 21st April & 20th May) A bright idea could net you a bargain or entice you to do something for a good friend without asking anything in return. But you might want to research your options when it comes to taking risks, especially if you’re about to move into new territory. You may feel better if you know what’s coming rather than going with the flow and hoping for the best. One encounter could confirm something you’ve wondered about but perhaps not dared mention. NEXT WEEK FOR GEMINI: (Born between 21st May & 20th June) You may be very happy to share your ideas and personal opinions with others. Indeed, a flash of inspiration or a conversation with a friend could help you share your insights on social media and attract those who may be on the same wavelength. If you’re planning a social event or get-together, a more practical approach may be needed. Don’t rely on everything being all right on the big night, as there’s a chance it might not be. NEXT WEEK FOR CANCER: (Born between 21st June & 22nd July) If certain issues seem to be holding you back and keeping you from making progress, the present blend of influences could encourage you to separate the various strands. It might be time to release the deepseated emotions that consume a lot of your energy, especially if you’re trying to keep them from surfacing. Discussing such matters with a trusted friend can reassure you and give you the confidence to let go. Regarding work, a new contact could be very helpful. NEXT WEEK FOR LEO: (Born between 23rd July & 22nd August) While you might relish the chance to go on a spontaneous trip, certain issues may need to be dealt with first. You can enjoy yourself, but a key aspect between Mercury and Pluto suggests it might not be wise to neglect one task if it means that you fall out of favor with a boss or other key figure. On the other hand, if you do well, you may be rewarded. Go easy over the weekend, though, as someone may not be as they seem. NEXT WEEK FOR VIRGO: (Born between 23rd August & 22nd September) A deal struck on the spur of the moment may seem like a great idea, but is it really? If you’re to get the best out of it, then it could pay to do more homework. Be prepared to analyze the details and seek out hidden agendas. Only when you’re completely happy will you feel comfortable about going
ahead. However, a lovely aspect could boost your confidence, giving you the inner assurance that you can handle whatever happens. NEXT WEEK FOR LIBRA: (Born between 23rd September & 22nd October) This week it could pay to balance an impulsive mood with some dedicated fact finding. Just because an idea seems great at the time, it could have a disruptive influence on your life unless you consider the consequences. Even so, the same may not be true of an unexpected encounter that could add a special note of excitement to the days ahead. Don’t take everyone at their word over the weekend, though, as someone may be telling a small white lie. NEXT WEEK FOR SCORPIO: (Born between 23rd October & 21st November) The Sun in a sensitive sector of your chart could be a call to examine your deeper thoughts and feelings. This is also an opportunity to let go of those patterns of belief that may be limiting your ability to be as successful as you’d like. However, any changes you wish to make won’t happen overnight. It may require a period of self-analysis to truly understand what the inner obstacles are. But even one insight could prove very liberating. NEXT WEEK FOR SAGITTARIUS: (Born between 22nd November & 21st December) Fun plans may clash with your job or work commitments. But if you can find a way to delegate some tasks, it might be possible to get away. The cosmos urges you to be creative about finding ways to enjoy yourself without it costing a lot. You may find that with some lateral thinking you can enjoy an experience for free or very little. All it takes is the ability to adopt a different perspective that spotlights fresh possibilities. NEXT WEEK FOR CAPRICORN: (Born between 22nd December & 19th January) A new gadget could be a time-saver and provide great value for the money. When it comes to family relationships, you might need to put your feelings to one side and take a firmer approach to a certain matter. If you’re too sentimental, someone in the family may not have the chance to tap in to their own strength, preferring you fight their battles for them. Although you may feel guilty about adopting this approach, it could be the best way ahead. NEXT WEEK FOR AQUARIUS: (Born between 20th January & 18th February) Leisure options can offer some exciting encounters and new experiences that could make the days ahead very upbeat. However, you might also feel a need for some quiet time in order to make a key decision. This can allow you to appreciate the pros and cons and work out what is best for you and your family. Your instincts can be a helpful guide here, too. Meanwhile, a very interesting conversation could be the start of a new and supportive friendship. NEXT WEEK FOR PISCES: (Born between 19th February & 20th March) Be on guard against misunderstandings with family members or anyone who shares your home. A lack of communication could put a little bit of a distance between you and the other person. If you keep the conversation going, any such issues will likely be ironed out quickly. If you need some nurturing after a busy week, opt for a massage, spa day, or pampering session that will help you relax. You know you deserve it!

LEGAL
Local Licenses Expat Law (Thailand) Co., Ltd., was established by Michael Lieberman. Utilizing the litigation services of Thai and English speaking lawyers with experience in domestic and international law, for individuals both foreign and local, domestic entities and inhouse legal counsel for numerous established international companies. Khun Michael will be giving legal advice here in this
column about the ever changing situation in regards to Thai Law and keeping readers up to date with the constant changing business and social environment here in Thailand. In this week’s article I would like to talk about licenses here in Thailand. Like any other country there are many licenses that are issued for multiple uses and purposes. From a driving license to work
permits to liquor licenses, there are certain rules and regulations concerning each license that may be difficult to obtain as much of the information is in Thai language only. One such license such as a liquor license may extend to not just the selling of alcoholic products but to their importation and supplying, depending on the license type one may be able to sell alcohol to the public but is not
able to import it into the Kingdom. The governing body that collects the taxes from alcohol is the Excise Department located in the Ministry of Finance, they are also the ones who issue the licenses and are the regulatory agency of alcohol production and distribution. Anyone planning to sell alcohol should apply for a license here, which is a relatively easy process to go through as Thailand has a huge demand to satisfy its hospitality industry as well as its local restaurants, pubs and clubs. After obtaining the license the owner will then be able to sell alcohol during the allotted times 11am to 2pm and 5pm to 12am. Also license holders are prohibited to sell alcohol to people under the age of 20 and selling next to educational institutes such as schools and universities. If in the case that importing alcohol is needed then a whole other license on top of the liquor license, this process is noticeably more complicated but not unobtainable in any way. Though if the imported alcohol is for personal consumption then it can be as simple as the initial liquor license. The permit that enables you to import and then trade the alcohol requires having things such as; pro forma invoices, showing place of business or lease contract and having bottle labels approved by the department which can take time. Many companies go through this process as alco-
hol is big business here in Thailand with a marketed increase in wine sales which make up almost twenty percent of all alcohol imported into the country. Though the market is good it doesn’t mean that it is cheap to import liquor, the tax on imported liquor is usually broken down as follows: · Customs import duty fee. · Excise tax which can has a ceiling of 60% depending on what country the alcohol was imported from, this can be as low as 5% or even be eliminated by importing from countries under the FTA (free trade agreement) or the AFTA or (ASEAN free trade agreement). · Municipal tax of 10% of the Excise tax. ·Value added tax or VAT of 7%. · A government health support project of 2% The way to calculate all of these taxes are dependent on market rates, the type and volume of al-

cohol and is a complicated process that COMMENT: Anytime you are required to have a license to support or operate a business it is vital to have the proper permits, please don’t start doing business until the license is in your hands as it’s illegal to do so and you can be fined and punished severely. It’s also important to renew any licenses that may be expired and to display them where they are easily seen, by following this advice you will ensure that you won’t be punished or even lose any licenses you may have. Please feel free to contact us and we will answer any questions or queries you may have. Stuvik’s Lamborghini battered at Buriram
The second race of the Blancpain GT series Asia took place at the Buriram International Circuit, the race would be Sandy’s first home event in his main series. Free practice took place on Friday and the Thai drivers Lamborghini Huracan GT3 had sustained extra BOP balast, this meant the car was further disadvantaged in comparison to its
competitors. This would prove to be a challenge for Sandy and his teammate Martin Kodric as they pushed the car as hard as they could only to place in the lower half of the top 10. Qualifying on Saturday morning saw Kodric in the car for qualifying 1 and Sandy in he car for qualifying 2. Kodric set a blistering lap to secure 6th on the grid for race
1. Sandy qualified in 13th for the second race in a very competitive field of almost 30 cars. Race 1 would be a pivotal moment in the weekend for the Thai driver and his teammate. Kodric got off to a flying start and gained 4 positions within the first lap. 10 minutes into the race, keeping a good pace and maintaining his position, Kodric was unable to avoid a spinning GT4 car dangerously trying to rejoin the track after having taken out the leading Ferrari of Chinese racer Liu. The damage sustained in the crash meant that the #66 Lamborghini Huracan GT3 was out of not only the Saturday race but the Sunday race as well. “I’m very sorry to all the Thai fans that were cheering for me and I

Pattana Golf Championship 2017
CHON BURI (Thailand), May 19 — A stunning birdie blitz coming home powered Fredrik From to a convincing three-shot victory in the MENA Tour’s rain-truncated Pattana Golf Championship on Friday. Starting the day a good four shots back, From blazed the course with a bogey-free nine-under 63, studded with seven birdies on the back nine, to seal his first win on the MENA Tour on 13-under 131 and a second for a Swede after Per Barth, who achieved the feat at the 2015 Shaikh Maktoum Dubai Open. Venezuela’s Wolmer Murillo reeled off seven birdies against a lone
bogey in his closing six-under 66 to finish solo second, one clear of England’s Jordan Garnish and American Roberto Galletti, who fired two eagles, including one on par-4, sixth, en route to his final round 67. Overnight leader Jose Ignacio Marin Casado of Spain slipped into a three-way tie for fifth on eightunder after carding a level-par 72 alongside the Thai duo of Nakul Vichitryuthasastr and Wanich Petcharit. On a day when 45 minutes were lost due to the threat of lightning, everything went From’s way as he easily out-paced the field in a virtuoso effort that left everyone
marvelling at his ball-striking prowess. “Feel really delighted to get the job done this time around after having lost out in a couple of playoffs on the MENA Tour,” said From after receiving the winner’s trophy from Thomas Topken, managing director of Pattana Golf Club. “Everything worked well for me. I hit all the greens in regulation which was great. This course is my favourite now. There are so many scoring opportunities out there, especially on the back nine. I will be playing in MENA Tour’s events in South Africa and see if I can win the order of merit,” said the 27-year-old who graduated
from the MENA Tour’s Qualifying School in 2016. Brazil’s Dubai-based Tiago Lobo kept up his dominance in the amateur division, taking the honours on two-under after a final round 73 as India’s Arkesh Bhatia, who is also based in Dubai, and Thailand’s Worathon Zeng shared second four shots adrift. Elsewhere, playing in his first competitive event in four weeks, Eu-
ropean Tour regular Prom Meesawat knocked the rust off his game, finishing tied ninth on sixunder after returning a 68, one ahead of England’s Lee Corfield and three off Zane Scotland, a 10time winner on the tour, as UAE’s Ahmed Al Musharrek settled for tied 60th on four over 148. The Pattana Golf Championship, which was reduced to 36-holes after heavy rain waterlogged the
course, preventing play on the first two days marked the conclusion of the MENA Tour’s Thailand three-event swing which saw Thailand’s Jazz Janewattananond win the Mahasamutr Masters and Lionel Weber of France reign supreme at Mountain Creek Open by Golf Citizen. The MENA Tour will now travel to South Africa for three on the bounce co-sanctioned events with the Sunshine Big Easy Tour, starting from June 6. An initiative of the Shaikh Maktoum Golf Foundation, the MENA Golf Tour was created in 2011 with the aim of developing golf in the region. It is affiliated to R&A, the worldwide golf governing body based in the home of golf, St Andrews, and the Arab Golf Federation and enjoys the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) status. A guaranteed spot on the PGA Tour’s 2018 DEAN & DELUCA Invitational (for the MENA Tour champion), multiple European Tour starts, including the Omega Dubai Desert Classic, the Hassan II Trophy, Maybank Championship Malaysia, and the KLM Open, are some of the added incentives that await MENA Tour members, in addition to playing privileges on the Sunshine Tour, and exemptions into the Final Stage of the Sunshine Tour and Asian Tour QSchools.

PATTAYA SPORTS CLUB MEMBERS
GROWLING SWAN Pleasant Valley GC – 25th May 2015 Steve Younger paves the way. With only 9 golfers prepared to brave the elements it turned out to be a quick round of Golf. We set out with 3 x 3’s and decided to play from the Blue Tees with Pick, Clean and Place being the way of the day. Well it was raining when the buses departed The Swan but as the golfers drew closer to their destination there was no sign of rain and no sign that there had been rain. It goes to show that because it rains in Pattaya it not nesecarily means that it is raining everywhere!
The day was fine and if anything it was a bit on the hot side. With a small field it only took one to break away from the pack and that was Steve Younger finishing with 36 points from his handicap of 15. His nearest rivals had 32 and two golfers had 31. The Winners on the Day. Steve Younger (15) 36 pts. Near Pins. 5th D-For 8th Steve Younger 13th D-For 7th Ian Parry Long First Putt 9th Colin Stielow 18th Steve Younger We welcomed back Ian Parry and

King’s Cup Pattaya Marathon
City ready for world famous run On Sunday the 16th of July, the streets of Pattaya will be even more crowded than usual, people will be jostling for good vantage points, while others are stretching and having a last gulp of water. All this can mean only one thing; it is the return of The King’s Cup Pattaya Marathon. Now in its 26th year, The Pattaya Marathon is often regarded as having one of the most beautiful running routes as it passes golden sand and lapping waves. Last year’s event attracted over 10,000 running enthusiasts and it is hoped that this year’s race will bring even more competitors to Pattaya City. The race will start at the Central Festival Pattaya Beach Mall and runners will make their way along Jomtien Beach, past Bali Hai Pier and up the challenging 2km slope towards the panoramic views of Khao Phra Tamnak before turning back on themselves and running along the Beach Road to the finish line, which is also outside of the Central Festival Pattaya
Beach Mall. The event is divided into 5 categories: the 42-km full marathon with five age groups of male entrants and four age groups of females, the 21.10-km half marathon with four age groups, the 10.55-km quarter marathon also with four age groups, a 10.55-km wheel chair race, and a 3.70-km fun run for less serious competitors. With so many different categories, the Pattaya Marathon provides a fun event offering something for everyone, whatever their age, ability or fitness level. The fastest finishers in each group of each gender will be awarded with the prestigious King’s Cup and a sizeable cash prize, while the five runner-ups in each age group of each gender will also get trophies and cash prizes. The total value of all cash prizes are believed to be worth more than two million Baht. Finishers in each category will also receive a finishers medal. Last year’s event was presided over by Former Culture Minister Sonthaya Kunplome and Gen. San
Saruthanon, president of the Athletic Association of Thailand who govern the race. Mr. Sontaya said that the Pattaya Marathon has proved successful in promoting sports and tourism as well as attracting athletes from around Thailand and across the world. The race was first introduced to fill the increasing need for an international marathon event in the area and Pattaya continues to prove itself as being a leading sports tourism destination. As well as enticing thousands of runners, the Pattaya Marathon will also attract thousands of spectators. With six weeks to go until the big event it may be too late to register now, but why not come down to the course to cheer on this year’s runners. If you are already signed up to compete then it is recommended that you book accommodation early. The King’s Cup Pattaya Marathon starts at 4am on the 16th of July 2017 For more information visit: www.pattayamarathon.go.th
TROPICAL GOLF GROUP Tuesday The 23rd May 2017: Pattana ( Stableford) I remember someone, not me, saying, ‘The worst day on a Golf Course is better than the best day at work’. well apart from the fact I have had some really great days at work I cannot remember a worse day on the Golf Course, not the Courses fault mind, than this, and I won!!. When it is raining in Pattaya I get phone calls nearly every time we go to play, by people who want to know if we are going to play. On this day I got none as it was not raining, so we met at BJ’s and off we went to Pattana after checking that there was no rain there and checking the weather forecast that showed all should be well. Arriving there it was a quick change and onto the first tee and we were to play the A & C in that order. We knew it had been raining lately so lift, clean and place was put in before we started. As the first group, off we went and A1 was damp underfoot but not bad, so onto A2 and tee off. Then the first drops started to fall, still down to the green as it started to fall harder. Onto the green, put out, and the rain got a bit harder so we dashed to the next hole, a par 3 and John hit his Tee shot
near the pin, as I bent down to put my tee in, the thunder and lightning started and we all dashed for the rest stop near us. Soon the next three groups joined us as the thunder crashed and the lightning flashed. For the best part of an hour we waited as the rain fell. Normally this is when it stops, so as it dropped to a slow rain we got to the tee and got away. So it brightened then got dark and we always hoped it would fully stop but it never did. Wet and miserable we battled on and it felt really cold so we did not drink water. Later discussion showed that several of the players had problems and we could only put it down to the seeming cold of the rain stopping players from drinking and several of us showed distress we later put down to dehydration. One of the players from the last group said he had never played 18 holes in the rain as the last group did. All were shattered, for me all my towels were wet as was every bit of my clothing, it is unpleasant. Even all my gloves were soaking. but these golfers are tough. As we walked around the fairways were deep in water in places, and it was nearly impossible to get a dry lie, except strangely on the greens which were playable all the way around.
It makes you think ‘Why Do we do it’, the answer is because we know no better. No sense no feeling!!. If it really pours down you pack in, but if it just rains you keep going and here we have no wet weather gear. Rules of Golf, and rain is no reason to stop. Never been so miserable in my like, as had half the players. Finished, I would like to say we all felt better, but no, it made for a miserable night. However the drive back was warm and dry. I would like to take credit for playing well, but the truth is I was so cold and wet I just kept plodding on and hitting the ball out of puddles. Or maybe because I was in the first group. So the winner on the day was Derek Brook with 37 points ahead of Brian Parish in second with 36 points. We then had a three way countback on 35 points that saw Dick Warberg in third, Mashi Kaneta in fourth and Landis just missing out. Then I tested the Singha Lights with the blue tops and found out why they are blue, because they have more alcohol and next morning I felt blue. T.T.F.N. LINKS GOLF SOCIETY It’s Truelove at St Andrew’s On Wednesday 24th May the Pattaya Links Golf Society visited St Andrew’s to play a stableford round. It was the first visit there for many a month and the welcome was warm even though the weather was dour with humidity near 90% and heavy clouds threatening all day. The course was in good condition though the soft fairways and two-club humidity made a long course seem even longer. As has happened so often recently it was another example of “millionaires’ golf” with hardly a golfer in sight all day. Yes, scoring was a problem and
in third place was Alistair Gall with 34 points. It took a countback to decide the winner and Aussie Steve Truelove’s better back nine topped the leaderboard from compatriot Gary Bolger, both finishing with 36 points. Elsewhere Mr Len’s abysmal putting drew the attention of M/C Mr Phil but the award of the dreaded wig was waived as the main winner of the day was absent, (but we had an old,but good, photo of Steve.) 1 st Place…….Steve Truelove (8)………..36 pts c/back 2 nd Place……Gary Bolger (17)………….36pts 3 rd Place……Alistaire Gall
(19)………..34 pts Back at the Links Bar in Soi Buakho the “craic” was good and the chicken satays were even better on a day when Truelove conquered all at a tough St Andrew’s. Pattaya Links Golf Society is a friendly group and welcomes golfers of all levels. We play Monday,Wednesday and Friday. We are situated at the southern end of Soi Buakhow, and opp Action Street bars.
