ction: products win the red dot award for product design 2009. Cooperation with the Swiss furniture manufacturer Züco began 3 years ago with events in Munich and Cologne staged under the name of “Typically Swiss”. ap35 subsequently provided the company with advisory support and assisted Züco in its endeavours to tap into the architectural market and establish a brand position. Various architectural excursions to Vorarlberg | Graubünden enabled Züco to present itself to the participating architects via a series of factory visits and workshops and to engage in an exchange of views. This regular platform and the encouragement of ap35 gave rise to the idea of designing a range of chairs not yet seen on the market in this particular form. The intensification of the architectural reference was a further important factor. ap35 succeeded in getting four architects on board to take part in this project. Andreas Notter (tools off architecture), Wolfgang Ott (Ott Architects), Jan Papenhagen (Dorsch Group) and Angelika Mosig (Ausdruck durch Gestaltung) worked on the new product range in conjunction with Züco’s Managing Director and Chief Designer Roland Zünd. ap35 assumed a lead management role and chaired the discussions which took place – architects designing for architects. The products were launched with considerable success under the name “4+” at the 2008 Orgatec, where they were displayed at their own satellite stand. As well as the trade fair stand itself, ap35 also designed a dedicated product brochure, an Internet presence and a film documenting the development process and underlying idea of 4+. Since October, the chairs have been the object of various product placements including on the leading Sabine Christiansen TV talk programme, in film productions starring actors such as Senta Berger and in gala shows. Confirmation of the correctness of the decision to stimulate and support this design process arrived at the start of the year when the Lounge and Conference armchairs from the 4+ range won the 2009 red dot award for product design.

alpitecture is a unique platform for the communication of new ideas relating to the topics of the Alps, architecture and technology. Observing such themes from unusual angles gives rise to unusual ideas. Architects operating at an international level and interdisciplinary experts debate the status quo in research and society in terms of how this affects architecture in the Alps. South Tyrol is a richly diverse region and provides the ideal environment in which to reflect on the Alps as an extreme living environment, accord consideration to architecture as the designed environment and devote thoughts to sustainable technologies. alpitecture is an idea which stems from ap35. The event is initiated by the EOS – Export Organisation of South Tyrol – and is funded by the South Tyrolean companies themselves. 30 architects from well-known companies operating on the international stage attended the conference, which took place between 14 – 17 May 2009 and afforded them an opportunity to experience the South Tyrolean Alps from a variety of perspectives. Participants enjoyed an informative journey based on a series of presentations on culture, trade and industry, town and country planning, regional development and architecture delivered by high-profile speakers from the region. An excursion provided the architects with a multi-facetted picture of the region of South Tyrol. Five workshops on architectural and technological themes relating to the topography of South Tyrol gave participants an opportunity to make use of what they had seen and experienced. The results of the workshops reveal important thematic areas with regard to the adoption of a conscious and future oriented approach to designing the architecture of the region. The official part of the event took place at the Town Theatre in Meran as Stefan Behnisch of Behnisch architects gave a presentation on “Architecture characterised by content – planning within the context of the environment”. An audience of 130 visitors followed his remarks with interest and devoted equal attention to the subsequent podium discussion featuring architectural engineer and Hon. FAIA Stefan Behnisch, Professor of Architecture Ruth Berktold, Doctor of Architecture Lukas Abram, the architectural engineers Wolfgang Ritsch and Jan Papenhagen and Dr. Markus Walder. The results of the five workshops also informed the discussions.

Vienna, 28 October 2009 Prof. Ruth Berktold, yes architecture, Munich and Graz, reported on alpitecture, and architect Georg Klotzner of Höller & Klotzner Architects, Meran, gave a presentation on “Building places – a situation report”.

Zurich, 11 November 2009 Architectural engineer Christian Simons of Schneider + Schumacher Architects, Frankfurt, reported on alpitecture, and architect Lukas Abram, Abram & Schnabl Architects, Bolzano, delivered a lecture on “Architecture in South Tyrol – between two cultural circles”.

Munich, 25 November 2009 Architectural engineer and Project Director Eckehart Loidolt of Baumschlager & Eberle, Vienna, reported on alpitecture, and architect Walter Angonese, Caldaro, gave a presentation on “Continuing construction”.

The partners of alpitecture, Frener & Reifer Metallbau, Höller KG, Erlacher Interior Design and Lanz Metall, also accompanied the tour to Vienna, Zurich and Munich. alpitecture on tour also received supplementary support from Finstral, Rubner Türen, Key Object and Rossin.

alpitecture on tour | Vienna, Zurich, Munich

South Tyrol – more than fruit, wine and bacon. The construction culture of the region visits Vienna, Zurich and Munich in alpitecture on tour – the platform for the Alps, architecture and technology.

“alpitecture” went on tour accompanied by over 400 architects who had registered for the event in Zurich and Munich. Including Vienna, this meant that just under 500 registrations were received in total. Interest in architecture in the mountains continues unabated and is by no means restricted to the capital cities of countries with the largest Alpine land areas. Such interest is bound to define new yardsticks over the course of the next few years, and this is an area in which alpitecture is seeking to make a contribution. The long-term aim is to establish alpitecture as a fixed date in the diary for architects operating at an international level. Anyone unable to attend the alpitecture on tour dates certainly missed out on a number of treats, such as the culinary delights of South Tyrol and, in particular, the fine wines to be found in the region. Notwithstanding this, the essential evening events were the lectures given by the South Tyrolean architects and by the architects who had participated in the Bolzano and Meran workshops in 2009.

Danube Real, the first international trade fair for commercial real estate in the Danube Region, will take place in 2010. The fair will offer a joint real estate and architectural platform for all ten countries through which the Danube flows. The idea and underlying concept for the event, which will take place in the Danube city of Ulm set at the very heart of the real estate markets in Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Rumania, Bulgaria, Moldavia and the Ukraine and focus on the main thematic area of “Building on water” stem from ap35. Further objectives of the commitment are to raise cross-border awareness of sustainable architectural concepts and engage in transnational debate on experiences gained from town and country planning, architecture and the real estate sector. Cooperation agreements between investors, architects and cities will be developed on the basis of sustainable ideas and will be implemented by means of constructive dialogue. The 4th European Conference of Danube Cities and Regions took place in Budapest on 11 June. The election of the Council of the Danube Cities and Regions provided an opportunity to present the DANUBE REAL 2010 – the international trade fair for commercial real estate – to be held in Ulm. The trade fair met with a positive response from all representatives present.

Jour Fix

Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design

Chair of Digital Design, Prof. Tobias Wallisser The initiative launched by ap35 and the support provided by Steelcase during the winter semester of 2008/09 reactivated the Jour Fixe series of events at the Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design and produced a resounding success. Renowned guests, including Prof. Mark Burry, Melbourne; Prof. Volker Staab, Berlin; J. Mayer H., Berlin; Prof. Patrick Schumacher, London were invited to present papers on the main theme of “Parametric dynamics”. For the summer semester of 2009, Professor Tobias Wallisser was able to engage the services of such lecturers as Roger Riewe, Graz; Danile Bosia, London; Chris Bangle, Munich; Julien De Smedt, Copenhagen. Architecture is an expression of a society’s cultural development. The society in which we live today is characterised by a diverse range of life and work models permeating and exerting an influence on the private and public sphere. Parametric architecture is seeking to meet the challenge of these new requirements. New design techniques are developing the thickness, form, alignment etc. of buildings by altering individual parameters in order to achieve an integrative effect on the construction properties as a whole. This gives rise to a type of architecture featuring new forms of spatial penetration. ap35 has been devoting extensive endeavours to this thematic area for some considerable time. Some customers who have displayed a particular interest have been stimulated into working in conjunction with architects to realise individual projects in the parametric field. ap35 is pursuing the particular objective of working for industry within this innovative sector in both an advisory and agency capacity.

Inaugural lecture by the Institute for Com

The Institute for Computational Design (ICD) under the professorship of Achim Menges has been established at the Faculty of Architecture and Planning at the University of Stuttgart in order to conduct teaching and research in this thematic area. In his inaugural lecture on 9 July 2009, Professor Menges presented the fields in which this teaching and research will be undertaken. Students, lecturers, staff and all those with an interest in computational design were invited to attend the event. Since the beginning of the year, Professor Achim Menges, who had previously spent seven years teaching and researching at the renowned Architectural Association School of Architecture in London, has been addressing the possibility of embedding the diverse requirements and complex interrelations of materials, form, structure and environment unique to the field of architecture into generative computer-based processes. New procedures, such as parametric, algorithmic or evolutionary design approaches are being deployed. ap35 is acting in a supporting function and has been commissioned with press relations, communication and the search for appropriate partners. ap35 has imparted know-how and provided contacts, the areas of expertise in which the company has made a name for itself is known in the architectural branch.

Customer magazine 째fahrenheit

Transport company tkv* Thermo King S체d established its customer magazine 째fahrenheit in 2005, since which time ap35 has been responsible for corporate publishing design. After six issues and special editions, May this year saw the publication appear in a new layout. The magazine has grown along with the company, which now operates three branches in Ulm, Munich and Nuremberg, to become a newspaper and covers both current issues affecting the company as well as developments within the transport and logistics industry. Alongside the corporate newspaper and the design of further strategic marketing measures for tkv* Thermo King S체d, ap35 also stages a bi-annual motivational weekend for the entire staff of the company. Colleagues from Ulm, Munich and Nuremberg come together to spend two days on sports based motivational and stamina activities. These take place on land, in the water or in the air and are a surprise for all participants each time the motivational weekend is staged!

Brand identity Image

“Spatial diversity” is the overarching motto which the company RIENTH uses to describe its light wall construction system. The basic structure consists of steel posts which can be combined with all conventional outer materials such as plaster board, wood, glass and many more besides. The light wall construction system features the narrowest profiles available on the market and provides flexibility in terms of surface design and room size dimensioning. The system offers diverse deployment opportunities and delivers a convincing architectural picture. RIENTH, an owner-managed company, celebrated its centenary in 2009. The light wall construction division has been repositioned within the range of services provided by the company, and the image of the product, which features compelling characteristics, has been completely revised as RIETH establishes a new brand. The brand identity has been designed by ap35 and comprises a logo, a sub-claim, business stationery and a brochure – entitled “Spatial diversity” – which presents the product. The variations, perfection of form and value of the product are clearly emphasised by the visual language used. The new brand identity is complemented by a new homepage.

ARCHITEKTU

ARCHITEKTUR MIT BODE

The “Architectural talk” series of events was launched on 4 June 2009 in the new Showroom at Heinrich Schmid Studios in Munich under the motto of “Wellgrounded architecture”. The concept and underlying idea for the event and graphical implementation all stem from ap35. At the beginning of each event, participants were given a particular treat in the form of an opportunity to become involved in the creation of a work of art themselves. At the opening event, for example, they threw, splattered and squirted paint and used “paint bombs”. During the first meeting, Pascal Müller of the company Müller Sigrist Architects, Zurich, presented projects and works. This was followed by a presentation by the Esslingen-based company Kiesel, which displayed a new development of ceramic-look non-grouted floor surfaces. After the presentations, there was an invitation to take part in a discussion on quality and sustainability in harmony with aesthetics and design chaired by freelance journalist Jochen Paul. ap35 prepared and supported the evening event, which was accompanied by a communicative and artistic contribution from Heinrich Schmid. The “Architectural discussions” series of events provides an opportunity for architects from the Munich area to address and exchange views on a range of topics.

The topic for the second architectural talk, which took place in Munich on 30 July 2009, was “Simple intelligence”. Marieke Kums from SANAA, Tokyo, presented projects and works from her company. In his capacity as Managing Director of the company prosystems, Hardy Kleiner gave a presentation on systems management. On 17 September 2009, Cornelius Schlotthauer of Zaha Hadid Architects delivered a lecture entitled “Programmed structures”. Zaha Hadid is a Pritzker Prize winner and the most successful woman in the history of architecture thus far. She has redefined form and design and used computer-aided design as a vehicle for perfecting both aspects. Zaha Hadid’s company is one of the first to design buildings according to parametric rules. On the evening of the third architectural discussion, Cornelius Schlotthauer gave the very first detailed presentation of current projects being undertaken by the Hamburg-based company. The “Architectural talk” series of events is being staged by Heinrich Schmid Studios, a venue which represents a spatial realignment for Zaha Hadid. The evening also saw a presentation by Heiko Schühle of some of the highlights of the innovative projects which have taken place in such countries as Libya, Nigeria and Germany. The topic for the last architectural talk for 2009, which took place 19 November, was “Spatial realignment”. David Cook, a partner at Behnisch Architects, Stuttgart, presented some of the company’s projects from the point of view of sustainability and the environment. The company accords particular consideration to these topics with regard to the inter-relationship between the topographical, climate, geopolitical and cultural situation at the location. Stone is one of the oldest building materials, and we believe that we are familiar with its properties. Ströhmann Steinkult combines classical stonemasonry expertise and sculpting know-how with highly innovative technology. Uwe Ströhmann presented the company, which has set itself the immovable objective of the highest levels of quality and craft trade skill.

The sixth Open German Ski and Snowboarding Championships for Architects and Interior Designers, the GERMAN ARCHITECTS MASTERS (GAM Open) took place in the Kleinwalser Valley in Austria from 4–7 February 2010. Around 145 participants from Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Italy arrived in Hirschegg last weekend to participate in the event. This year saw a break in the unbroken record of sunshine which has accompanied the GAM Open series since 2004. Races began under cloudy skies and snowfall on the on the International Ski Federation (FIS) certified Olympic course in the Ifen ski region. The ladies were the first to take to their snowboards and skis to launch themselves down the challenging 300 metre course. Ramona Schröder (Mattes Sekiguchi Architects, Heilbronn) emerged as the victor of the four-strong ladies’ snowboarding event, whereas the women’s skiing competition was won by Daniela Küspert (Egg and Dart Design Corporation, Munich). The men then took to the slopes. The men’s snowboarding event was won by Michael Mackenrodt (Archiscape, Berlin). Fantastic times were also achieved by the male skiers, Jannis Merz (Merz Objektbau, Aalen) emerging victorious. The Alpstein Team from Immenstadt achieved very good placings in all four disciplines to take victory in the company championship by just under four seconds. Second and third places went to the “Assoziierten aus der Tiefe des Raumes” from Munich and Merz Objektbau from Aalen respectively. The GAM Open was preceded for the second time by the Hotel Architecture Congress “5 Star Deluxe”. International speakers gave presentations on unique hotel concepts which have become established as successful products within the hotel industry via a creative process taking place between architects, contractors and investors. The main focus of the congress was on the dialogue between architects and contractors. Speakers were: the engineers Veronika Kammerer and Achim Kammerer from studio lot in Munich; the engineer Alexander Rieck from the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering (IAO) in Stuttgart; Dr. Harald Pechlaner, Professor of Tourism at the catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt; the Hamburgbased art journalists Nicole Büsing & Heiko Klaas; Corinna Kretschmar-Joehnk & Peter Joehnk of JOI Design in Hamburg; Architect RIBA Martin Murphy from Murphy and Partners in Hamburg; Professor Carlo Baumschlager from Baumschlager & Eberle Architects in Lochau.

CIS – Styrian architectural exports

International commitment | The situation of architects in Styria. The first stage of this project involved a situational analysis/branch screening process conducted in Styria by the architect Martin Brischnik in order to achieve clarity in respect of appropriate target markets, potential customers, product positioning and opportunities for success. Three think tanks in which Styrian architects took part were also held at CIS (Creative Industries Styria) as a further way of generating knowledge. The result of discussions has shown that all participating companies are interested in projects abroad. The problems are a lack of assistance for companies to position themselves on the international market, the language risks and the absence of information on situations regarding country-specific construction law. The development of appropriate marketing and acquisition activities by ap35 has produced a clearly structured catalogue of measures to serve as a monitoring and planning tool for the brand launch. All projects and campaigns defined have been carefully coordinated and provided with a clear time and budgetary framework.

ap35 Digital to Metal Cooperation with universities

This workshop took place in conjunction with Professor Tobias Wallisser from the Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design, Professor Achim Menges from the Institute for Computational Design/University of Stuttgart and Professor Werner Sobek from the Institute for Lightweight Structures and Conceptual Design/University of Stuttgart. The event was staged at the premises of Frener & Reifer in Brixen, represented by Michael Reifer and Michael J. Purzer. The impetus and idea behind the project were both initiated by ap35/Ulm together with Frener & Reifer. In digital architecture, it is becoming increasingly important for companies to familiarise themselves with the latest methods/technologies as well as with the specialists working in this area. “Knowing what really counts…..” 20 students from the University of Stuttgart and the Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design worked in four groups on a range of tasks assignments which had emerged from preceding work at the University and from the ongoing design studios at the Academy. The aim was to impart an understanding of different research approaches based on computer-aided processes from design concept to production. Using the workshop facilities in Brixen enables the participants to deal with metalworking production techniques and use the exchange of ideas with Frener & Reifer as a vehicle for developing parts of their projects into prototypes. The workshop was supported by student project staff from the University and the Academy. Experts from the field of digital production processes were also invited. The following support staff took part: • Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design (ABK Stuttgart), Digital Design Class: Professor Tobias Wallisser, AM Martin Schroth M.A. (AAD) LB Marc Hoppermann • ICD (Institute for Computational Design), University of Stuttgart Professor Achim Menges, AM Moritz Fleischmann • I LEK (the Institute for Lightweight Structures and Conceptual Design) University of Stuttgart: AM Stefan Neuhäuser, M. Fleischmann, MArch. (AA) • AA FAB, London: Alan Dempsey • Design to Production: Arnold Walz, Ania Appolinarska

German Association of Interior Designers

“Hidden treasures” able premises of ap35

A fitting way of describing our premises. Every space has its history, and ours is no exception.

“We can consider ourselves fortunate that our offices feature on the cover page of the 2009/2010 Handbook of the German Association of Interior Designers”. Further pleasure comes in the form of an award:

„the Office Application Award 2009: Best Innovative Concept“. In 2008, ap35 moved into a production hall previously used for the manufacture of lorries. To be precise, all that remained of this former industrial facility was a room 8 metres in height. “When we saw this space stripped down to its shelves, an image came into my head. Something airy, uncomplicated and creative that simply had to fly. This was exactly how our new offices had to be!“ (Pfetschi) We worked in conjunction with Andreas Notter from “tools off ” in Munich to develop the open space into a cockpit with a staircase and light and moveable bridge. The bridge leads to the “Think tower”, which combines a number of functions. A glass-walled project room is situated at the top. Under this is an archive only accessible via a motorised flap as is the sanitation area on the ground floor. The cockpit/work station level is accessed via the mobile staircase which can be raised with a rope pull – the inspiration here comes from fire escapes in the USA. This enables events and exhibitions to be staged on the ground floor, something we have already done, without affecting the actual office premises themselves. All of this has allowed us to achieve an ideal communication structure for our team. At first glance, the premises are somewhat out of the ordinary. We would be said to have redefined the office and created the “reset office”. Anyone interested in seeing more is welcome to visit us in Ulm.

INHALT 01

WILLKOMMEN

ROMA is a medium-sized company based in Burgau/Bavaria on the southern axis between Stuttgart and Munich. It manufactures roller shutters, gates and sun protection systems and has grown to become market leader in Germany for front-mounted roller shutters. The company was seeking an agency able to display the marketing and sales opportunities which would enable Roma to enter into cooperation with architects. The main stimulation for the cooperation with ap35 came from the Augsburg-based Ott Architects, which had been commissioned with the reconstruction of the Roma Forum. ap35 produced a design concept idea placing the main focus on this new building as a communication platform and also came up with the idea for the Roma Architecture Conference. The first Roma Architecture Conference formed the framework for the official opening of the Roma Forum. The informative event attracted around 200 participants and was a considerable success. The Architecture Conferences are also proving extremely popular this year.

InterfaceFLOR was founded by Ray Anderson in 1973 as a manufacturer and distributor of modular floor systems and has now developed into world market leader in the production of carpet system flooring and innovative renovation and cable management flooring systems whilst also providing consistent service and practising environmental protection in a sustainable manner. ap35 was able to use its brand implementation concept for the German architectural sector as a vehicle for getting InterfaceFLOR on board as a customer. We were commissioned by the German branch in Krefeld to undertake the following measures within the scope of a holistic concept: - training and schooling staff in communication with architects; - creating an image brochure for architects as a target group; - staging a student competition for a mobile showroom; - producing an image film on the architectural expertise of InterfaceFLOR; - undertaking a road show through the main architectural metropolises of Germany; - designing appropriate invitation mailings for the road show.

The range of services provided by ap35 is extremely diverse and offers holistic marketing for architectural companies large and small. The aim of our agency is to stay one step ahead of the future. New ideas will be implemented in projects and provide guarantees for further market successes.

ap35 will be staging an architectural journey to South Tyrol in September 2010 which could fittingly be accorded the title “cross-border perspectives. Architecture is the result of the culture of a society influenced by the topography of the region concerned. Exemplary construction works and the knowledge of how such projects are realised expand our own creative resources. ap35 The very thought of sun, water and wind is enough to relax us and leave us contemplating our holidays. Precisely the right environment to enjoy a chat with colleagues or seek the challenge of a sporting competition. ap35 will be joining architects and industrial partners to take to the waters of Lake Constance for the 2010 LCC Open 2010. The regatta yachts will be waiting in May. ap35 As we all know, education is very much at a premium nowadays. ap35 is making a contribution in this area by working on two book projects dealing with the subject of architecture. To those who say there are too many architecture books on the market we suggest that the new and fresh approach which ap35 will be bringing will come as a pleasant surprise.

German Youth Hostel Organisation Obsolete infrastructure and the lack of a target group required a repositioning on the market in order to remain competitive. ap35 has been invited by the Bavarian Youth Hostel Association to come up with a new way of presenting and defining youth hostels. Frener & Reifer Ideas are generated from discourse which takes place between specialists from different disciplines. In September 2010, the renowned company FRENER & REIFER will be holding a workshop for invited participants on the topic of “Facade of the Future”. The event will also be accompanied by an exhibition opening and a field trip. alpitecture 2010 alpitecture 2009 created a platform for the communication of new ideas relating to the topics of the Alps, architecture and technology. 2010 will provide architects with a further opportunity to consider the topic of building in the Alps in detail by looking at the example of South Tyrol. The focus of the workshops will be on a specific task assignment forming an object of debate beyond the North Italian Alps. ap35 has designed the platform and is responsible for content, organisation and implementation. Höller KG Customers are familiar with the products of a company, especially when the products in question are supplied by one of Italy’s leading interior design companies. ap35 is providing Höller KG with consultancy services for the design concept of a new brand and for the associated new products and communication measures. HfG – Hochschule für Gestaltung Ulm How can a myth be brought back to life? During its period of existence from 1953 to 1968, HfG Ulm became a byword for design. The company’s former premises have now reopened under the name of “HfG Ulm Centre for Design”. ap35 has been commissioned to come up with a concept for possible uses and events. The initial task, however, will be to embrace the tradition of the inheritance taken on in communicating the new brand.
