FRATERNITY MISSION STATEMENT
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity develops leaders, promotes brotherhood and academic excellence, while providing service and advocacy for our communities.
A BRIEF HISTORY
Since its founding on December 4, 1906, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity has supplied voice and vision to the struggle of African-Americans and people of color around the world. Alpha Phi Alpha, the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African-Americans, was founded at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, by seven college men who recognized the need for a strong bond of brotherhood among African descendants in this country. The visionary founders, known as the “Jewels” of the fraternity, are Henry Arthur Callis, Charles Henry Chapman, Eugene Kinckle Jones, George Biddle Kelley, Nathaniel Allison Murray, Robert Harold Ogle, and Vertner Woodson Tandy. The fraternity initially served as a study and support group for minority students who faced racial prejudice, both educationally and socially, at Cornell. The founders and early leaders of the fraternity succeeded in laying a firm foundation for Alpha Phi Alpha’s principles of scholarship, fellowship, good character, and the uplifting of humanity. Alpha Phi Alpha chapters were established at other colleges and universities, many of them historically black institutions, soon after the founding at Cornell. The first alumni chapter was established in 1911. While continuing to stress academic excellence among its members, Alpha also recognized the need to help correct the educational, economic, political, and social injustices faced by African-Americans. Alpha Phi Alpha has long stood at the forefront of the African-American community’s fight for civil rights through leaders such as: W.E.B. DuBois, Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., Edward Brooke, Martin Luther King, Jr., Thurgood Marshall, Andrew Young, William Gray, Paul Robeson, and many others. True to its form as the “first of firsts,” Alpha Phi Alpha has been interracial since 1945.
The Jewels of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity were no ordinary achievers. Given racial attitudes in 1906, their accomplishments were monumental. As founder Henry Arthur Callis euphemistically stated—because the half-dozen African American students at Cornell University during the school year 1904-05 did not return to campus the following year, the incoming students in 1905-06, in founding Alpha Phi Alpha, were determined to bind themselves to ensure that each would survive in the racially hostile environment. In coming together with this simple act, they preceded by decades the emergence of such on-campus programs as Affirmative Action and Upward Bound. The students set outstanding examples of Scholarship, Leadership, and Tenacity—preceding the efforts even of the NAACP and similar civil rights organizations.
THE JEWELS
HENRY ARTHUR CALLIS became a practicing physician, Howard University professor of medicine, and prolific contributor to medical journals. Often regarded as the “philosopher of the founders,” and a moving force in the fraternity’s development, he was the only one of the “Cornell Seven” to become general president. Prior to moving to Washington, D.C., he was a medical consultant to the Veterans Hospital in Tuskegee, Alabama. Upon his death in 1974, at age 87, the fraternity entered a time without any living Jewels. His papers were donated to Howard’s Moorland-Spingarn Research Center. CHARLES HENRY CHAPMAN entered higher education and eventually became professor of agriculture at what is now Florida A&M University. A university funeral was held with considerable fraternity participation when he became the first Jewel to enter Omega Chapter in 1934. Described as “a brother beloved in the bonds,” Chapman was a founder of FAMU’s Beta Nu Chapter. During the organization stages of Alpha Chapter, he was the first chairman of the Committees on Initiation and Organization. EUGENE KINCKLE JONES became the first executive secretary of the National Urban League. His 20-year tenure with the Urban League thus far has exceeded those of all his successors in office. A versatile leader, he organized the first three fraternity chapters that branched out from Cornell—Beta at Howard, Gamma at Virginia Union, and the original Delta at the University of Toronto in Canada. In addition to becoming Alpha Chapter’s second president and joining with Callis in creating the fraternity name, Jones was a member of the first Committees on Constitution and Organization and helped write the fraternity ritual. Jones also has the distinction of being one of the first initiates as well as an original founder. His status as a founder was not finally established until 1952. He died in 1954. GEORGE BIDDLE KELLEY became the first African-American engineer registered in the state of New York. Not only was he the strongest proponent of the fraternity idea among the organization’s founders, the civil engineering student also became Alpha Chapter’s first president. In addition, he served on committees that worked out the handshake and ritual. Kelley was popular with the brotherhood. He resided in Troy, New York, and was active with Beta Pi Lambda Chapter in Albany. He died in 1963. NATHANIEL ALLISON MURRAY pursued graduate work after completing his undergraduate studies at Howard. He later returned home to Washington, D.C., where he taught in public schools. Much of his career was spent at Armstrong Vocational High School in the District of Columbia. He was a member of Alpha Chapter’s first committee on organization of the new fraternal group, as well as the Committee on the Grip. The charter member of Washington’s Mu Lambda Chapter was a frequent attendee of General Conventions. He died in 1959. ROBERT HAROLD OGLE entered the career secretarial field and had the unique privilege of serving as a professional staff member to the United States Senate Committee on Appropriations. He was an African-American pioneer in his Capitol Hill position. He proposed the fraternity’s colors and was Alpha Chapter’s first secretary. Ogle joined Kelley in working out the first ritual and later became a charter member of Washington’s Mu Lambda Chapter. He died in 1936. VERTNER WOODSON TANDY became the state of New York’s first registered black architect, with offices on Broadway in New York City. The designer of the fraternity pin holds the distinction of being the first African-American to pass the military commissioning examination and was commissioned first lieutenant in the 15th Infantry of the New York State National Guard. He was Alpha Chapter’s first treasurer and took the initiative to incorporate the fraternity. Among the buildings designed by the highly talented architect is Saint Phillips Episcopal Church in New York City. Tandy died in 1949, at age 64.
WELCOME
Dear Ladies, Guests, Partners, My Brothers, and My Family, Happy new year and welcome to the Motor City—Detroit, Michigan! It is with esteemed pleasure that I welcome you to the home of Motown for the formal installation of Alpha Phi Alpha’s next leader. This is a time of new beginnings for our fraternity, and this is an opportunity for us to continue the tradition of service to mankind. I assume the leadership mantle of men who were given a charge to develop a blueprint to advance our fraternity’s future; to champion our programs and energize a brotherhood in the name of service and relationships, and when the community calls, Alpha will answer. I honor the legacy and assume a post to lead every Alpha man to remain connected to providing service. The value of an Alpha investment will solidify the fraternity’s rightful place as a 21st-century change agent guided by purpose, passion, and mission. Thank you to my brothers who supported me through this journey from the beginning and assisted me with this very important transition. Thank you to our partners, supporters, and the Marriott Hotel for making this event special. I thank my wife Velicia for her strength and support that allows me to render service to the fraternity and advocate for our communities. I thank my family for providing me with a strong foundation built on love and courage. “Courage teaches us what should be feared and what ought not to be feared. Only by taking action do we gain that knowledge, and from that knowledge comes an inner strength that inspires us to persevere in the face of great adversity—and inspires others to follow. In the most difficult of times, courage is what makes someone a leader.” - Unknown Enjoy your time here in Detroit, and it is my intent that your investment defines our next generation. Sincerely,
Mark S. Tillman General President
BROTHER MARK STEWART TILLMAN has dedicated over 2 decades of service to making Alpha
Phi Alpha Fraternity a leader in the eyes of the membership it serves and the community at large. Brother Tillman offers leadership that encompasses integrity, humility, commitment, motivation, versatility, accountability and dedication, as he endeavors to maintain Alpha’s brand. Brother Tillman was initiated on November 22, 1985, into Beta Phi Chapter located on the campus of Dillard University in New Orleans, Louisiana. Brother Tillman learned the value of being a brother in “good standing” early from mentors who were instrumental in his initiation and development. Brother Tillman has served as the immediate past vice president of the midwestern region. Under his leadership, he focused on supporting chapters so they can focus on promoting the mission of Alpha Phi Alpha. He provided an environment for brothers to re-engage themselves with the fraternity and invested in the talents of our membership. He continues to provide a vehicle to attract new partners and showcase what Alpha Phi Alpha has to offer. During his time in office, the “Roadmap to Excellence” was instituted as an annual agenda to demonstrate execution of the national strategic plan tasks with the goals of the midwestern region. Throughout Brother Tillman’s leadership, the region maintained a consistently high rank in chapter compliance nationwide and collegiate member attendance at the Alpha Leadership Academy. Despite economic challenges, every Midwestern Regional Convention made a profit and the profits were shared with the host chapters. The region also instituted GPA monitoring of college chapters to measure academic progress. Several recognition programs were instituted to recognize newly initiated members, chapter donors to support regional competition winners at general conventions, and chapters celebrating their 100th anniversaries. Brother Tillman is a consistent SERVANT. He served as the associate executive director of the midwestern region for 4 years and served in other capacities as a valued staff member to several midwestern region administrations. He has been integral on issues such as chapter administration and compliance, the membership intake process, event planning, and other activities and programs. In addition, Brother Tillman also chaired the 74th Midwestern Regional Convention in Alpha Phi Alpha’s centennial year, one of the most memorable and most registered regional conventions ever. Brother Tillman served as a LEADER in many capacities. He was an area director in Detroit, Michigan, and led the state of Michigan as the district director in which the district achieved one hundred percent (100%) of the chapters in good standing under his leadership. To this day, Michigan is considered a model district in the region. Brother Tillman has over 20 years of membership in Gamma Lambda Chapter in Detroit, Michigan. He continually serves his chapter as a tireless contributor to its programs, service projects, and brotherhood activities. He has represented his chapter as a delegate to conventions, at every level, and has been a chapter officer in six chapter administrations. Brother Tillman is a key contributor on the Management Information Systems Committee that introduced the fraternity to AlphaNET and has also served as the workshop presenter on its use. He was instrumental in having the midwestern region to be the first region to use AlphaNET for regional conventions and has guided its adoption for two other regions. He also dedicated his time to educate chapters and members to utilize this tool to its full capability to streamline chapter operations. Brother Tillman is versatile as a trainer and contributor in several of our fraternity’s training workshops and committees. He facilitated several field staff training workshops including the District Directors, Area Directors, Chapter and Officer Development, and Alpha Advisors workshops. He was also the original associate dean of the College of Business and Technology for Alpha University and is currently contributing to the Organizational Effectiveness Subcommittee for Performance Measures and Indicators. Outside of Alpha Phi Alpha, Brother Tillman has over 20 years of information technology experience and combined service with the Hewlett-Packard Company (HP) through an acquisition of Electronic Data Systems (EDS). He is a technology consultant and lead offering engineer in which he leads a global team of systems engineers to design, build, and test server platform solutions. He provides leadership in determining technical direction, research, analysis, and implementation plans for new technology standards and processes. Brother Tillman chairs an employee-network group at HP where he promotes and executes programs that enhance professional development and diversity within the IT profession. Brother Tillman is also a member of the Black Data Processing Association (BDPA). Brother Tillman is a native of New Orleans, Louisiana. He completed his bachelor’s degree in computer science at Dillard University in 1988. To ensure balance with Alpha Phi Alpha and his personal life, Brother Tillman is celebrating over 15 years of marriage to his wife Velicia. He is also a three-time mentor with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America for 9 years and was recently honored as a “Person of the Week” for his dedication to mentoring. He attends Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Detroit, and in his leisure time, he is an outdoor enthusiast who enjoys camping and associated water sports (such as canoeing and kayaking), cycling, motorcycle riding, and exercising.

DILLARD UNIVERSITY 2601 Gentilly Boulevard New Orleans, LA 70122
4 January 2013 Brother Mark S. Tillman Thirty-fourth General President Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Dear Brother Tillman, On behalf of the alumni, students, faculty and staff of Dillard University, I want to congratulate you on being elected the 34th General President of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. There was great excitement here when the news was announced, as your presidency serves as just the latest example of the excellence that Dillard University has produced for over one hundred years, dating back to both Straight College and New Orleans University founded in 1869, merging in 1930 to become Dillard University. You continue the legacy of Dillard alumni who have led Divine Nine organizations, beginning with Dr. Matellia Grays ' 52, who served as International President of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. You now join Cynthia Butler-McIntyre ' 76, who is the current International President of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., possibly making Dillard the only school to ever have two sitting Divine Nine presidents! Your presidency also reminds us of the legacy of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. at Dillard University. When you were initiated in the fall of 1985 through the Beta Phi chapter, the General President of the fraternity was Charles C. Teamer, who was serving Dillard University as the Vice President for Finance. In addition, it is an additional point of pride for me, as the first member of Alpha Phi Alpha to serve as president of Dillard, to have a General President who is an alumnus. We congratulate you on this accomplishment and we look forward to supporting you as you continue to strengthen the mission of the fraternity, which is to develop leaders, promote brotherhood and academic excellence, while providing service and advocacy for our communities. Sincerely,
Bro. Walter M. Kimbrough, Ph.D. President
