Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.™, the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African American Men, was founded on December 4, 1906™ at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York by seven college men who recognized the need for a strong bond of brotherhood among African descendants in this country.
The fraternity initially served as a study and support group for minority students who faced racial prejudice, both educationally and socially, at Cornell. The Jewel founders and early leaders of the fraternity succeeded in laying a firm foundation for Alpha Phi Alpha’s principles of scholarship, fellowship, good character, and the uplifting of humanity.
Alpha Phi Alpha chapters were established at other colleges and universities, many of them historically Black institutions, soon after the founding at Cornell. The first alumni chapter was established in 1911. While continuing to stress academic excellence among its members, Alpha also recognized the need to help correct the educational, economic, political, and social injustices faced by African Americans. Alpha Phi Alpha has long stood at the forefront of the African-American community’s fight for civil rights through leaders such as W.E.B. DuBois, Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., Edward Brooke, Martin Luther King, Jr., Thurgood Marshall, Andrew Young, William Gray, Paul Robeson, and many others. True to its form as the “first of firsts,” Alpha Phi Alpha has been interracial since 1945.
Since its founding on December 4, 1906™, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. has supplied voice and vision to the struggle of African Americans and people of color around the world.

Dear Guests,
On behalf of the leadership of the New York State Association of Chapters of Alpha and the thousands of members of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated located here in the great state of New York, I greet you this evening. Thank you to our guests for your support of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated and for being with us tonight.
This is indeed a joyous occasion, one that will go down in the annals of history
Brother Lucien J. Metellus is one of the most pure, genuine, straightforward, trustworthy, and humble men that many of us would ever meet. Bro. Metellus’s career of service has led him straight to the top of every organization lucky enough to have him as a member. To achieve those accomplishments, one must possess the traits that I referenced. Bro. Metellus checks those boxes and continues his climb on a straightforward trajectory of success.
On a personal note, Bro. Metellus was intimately involved in my journey towards Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated. I would not be who I am today, nor would I have become NYACOA President and District Director without his tutelage, upliftment, and encouragement. For that, I am eternally grateful.
Lucien, you did it! Congratulations! On behalf of the Brothers of New York, and the officers of NYACOA, I wish you an amazing Alpha journey as General President. We pray that your administration and leadership is filled with accomplishments that only a General President from the Phirst State of Alpha could deliver. We are extremely proud of you and stand with you 100%.
In closing, I leave you with this quote. An unknown author once wrote, “in the cookies of life, Brothers are the chocolate chips.” We thank you for being our “Brother,” and wish you very sweet success.
With servitude and brotherhood in heart, I am,
Bro. Larry Scott Blackmon District III Director

“The office of general president is one of sacred trust. The incumbent holds the leadership mantle over an assembly of the nation’s greatest minds. The incumbent leader, to be successful, must be strong enough to follow. He must be resourceful, courageous, dynamic and versatile. While he will achieve honor and acclaim, he must also understand that these are not ends in themselves. ‘Honor and shame no condition rise; from well act your part in there the honor lies’, said the poet. The office of general president is one of distinction; also it is ‘the station of labor in the vineyard of love and service.’ It is to the fitting reward that comes as a climax to a season of service to the Brotherhood. I have always said that the office should seek the man rather than the reverse.”
