GREETINGS

EVERETT B. WARD, Ph.D. GENERAL PRESIDENT
JAMIE R. RILEY, Ph.D. EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR & COO
My Brothers of Alpha: I am honored to welcome you and your families to the 111th Anniversary Convention of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. I sincerely thank you for considering your participation in the work and the fellowship of our convention here in Baltimore to be a priority. This convention is our opportunity to gather, as one brotherhood, to engage in and to lend our collective voice to addressing the challenges facing our people and our communities. Throughout our time together this week, we will hear from several thought-provoking leaders. They will challenge us to raise our level of awareness about the actions that are taking place in the world around us. They will encourage us to continue fighting discrimination. They also will equip us with additional knowledge and information needed to partner with others to bring about change in our country. I believe that these discussions are necessary, given the fact that our American landscape is changing. Sadly, this change reminds me of the continued relevance of the insightful words of our Brother, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He said, “We are now faced with the fact that tomorrow is today. We are confronted with the fierce urgency of now. In this unfolding conundrum of life and history, there "is" such a thing as being too late. This is no time for apathy or complacency. This is a time for vigorous and positive action.” With Brother Dr. King’s words as our backdrop, our 111th Anniversary Convention will focus on these three priorities:

We will unveil our Alpha Advocacy and Action Issues Agenda.
2. We will release the Racial Justice Commission White Paper. 3. We will release an advocacy strategic checklist for Brothers to implement at all levels of Alphadom. I believe that these three priorities are critical. As you are all well aware, in recent months we have witnessed a resurgence of racially charged acts of violence on university campuses. We have witnessed countless actions against men who look like us without any consequences against those who are committing the acts. And we’ve witnessed the tone of the American public discourse becomes vestiges of past discriminatory language addressed specifically to African American citizens and people of color. Therefore, it is imperative that we use our time together to at this general convention to strategize to addressing these, and other issues that negatively affect our communities. Following our general convention, I am asking all of our Alpha Brothers to return to our communities and to provide uncompromising leadership. This leadership ranges from remaining vigilant in the fight for racial reconciliation to becoming tenacious advocates for equal access to quality education for all children. Again, I thank you so much for being here in Baltimore! I look forward to talking and fellowshipping with as many of you and your families as possible. Fraternally,
Everett B. Ward, Ph.D. General President

Dear Brothers, I offer you a warm welcome to our 94th General Convention in Baltimore. Your attendence is sure to be a memorable time for everyone as we celebrate the hometown of our fraternity’s headquarters. As your new executive director, I look forward to hearing from you about Alpha. Our brotherhood has enjoyed a long, storied life from its humble beginnings to now. What started from a few thoughtful men has grown into a powerhouse. As we continue to succeed in our mission, I hope you’ll also think about the different ways we can grow as a fraternity and as men. Our brotherhood can shine a bright light on how people of color have been able to make many positive contributions to the world, especially as men of Alpha. We carry the hopes of many on our capable shoulders. I hope as we have many dialogues at our convention that we can discuss the importance of growing to meet these needs and continue to keep a hopeful momentum through challenging times. We are still challenged by a convergence of racism with poverty. In his book, The Trend of the Races, Brother George Edmund Haynes [Gamma Phi ‘46] said, “We face a crucial racial situation. Shall mutual misunderstanding, suspicion, and friction continue, growing more and more acute? Or shall mutual understanding, tolerance, and goodwill replace them? Shall common sense or brutal force prevail?” Those words were penned in 1922. We still have much work ahead of us. Your General Office staff has been working hard to make this a great experience for all. We look forward to what lies ahead. Fraternally,

EASTERN REGION Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Welcome to Baltimore – Charm City! Your presence at the 94th General Convention makes a difference in the lives of your Brothers and the city of Baltimore, as 2017 has seen Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity focus on “The Urgency of Now” as we prepared for your arrival to our great city. Certainly, you will be happy to participate in the business sessions and workshops intended to bring about discussions on best practices we can take back to our respective chapters and communities. Our hosts from Delta Lambda, Beta Alpha, Beta Alpha Lambda, Mu Rho, Pi Theta, Sigma Sigma, Rho Tau Lambda, and Upsilon Zeta have planned a few activities for when the business of the day has concluded; so be certain to take the time and extend your circle of Brotherhood by fellowshipping with Brothers you’ve not met prior this convention or strengthening the relationship with the one you’ve known of for years. Likewise, with over 2700 registered from across the globe, Brothers from each of our seven districts – to include the states of Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington D.C. and Virginia, as well as the international areas of Bermuda, Germany, Liberia and the United Kingdom – are honored for your presence in the “First Region of Alpha.” The collective accomplishments of our chapters and their members make us all proud to not only be members of the quintessential Black Greek-lettered Organization for men but also delights our spirit as we lift up our energies for “…the better making of men.” Therefore, let us resolve, as noted in the second verse of our fraternal hymn, as: “…We hold ever aloft, noble ideals and aims, carrying out earth’s and heaven’s grand command, Our true hearts ever strive, success’ goal to gain, that our fraternity’s praises may be sung...” Thank you for your service to the Brotherhood and the greater community. Fraternal Regards, R. Anthony Mills Eastern Region Vice President

EASTERN REGION “I am convinced that the Principles and foundations laid down by our Seven jewel founders over 90 years ago, are sound and compelling today. An Alpha Man is not ordinary, average, or common. By tradition an Alpha Man is extraordinary in every way. He is a Person who has committed himself to live well while doing good for others. An Alpha is a man who can afford to take risks on behalf of fairness and justice; one who can through academic training and scholarship is an able advocate for an issue as well as an articulate spokesman for those who have no voice. An Alpha is a leader where and when that is necessary or a good supportive follower when others competently are providing leadership, but he is never indifferent or uninvolved.” Milton C. Davis 29th General President Brothers of Alpha, Welcome to Baltimore, Maryland! It brings me great pleasure as your Eastern Region Assistant Vice President to welcome you to the 111th Anniversary Convention & 94th General Convention here in the great district of the MAAC, the home of Headquarters of this great Fraternity and where the spirit of Brotherhood runs deep. ALPHA PHI ALPHA FRATERNITY FRATERNITY MISSION STATEMENT
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. develops leaders, promotes brotherhood and academic excellence, while providing service and advocacy for our communities. FRATERNITY VISION STATEMENT
The objectives of this fraternity shall be: to stimulate the ambition of its members; to prepare them for the greatest usefulness in the causes of humanity, freedom, and dignity of the individual; to encourage the highest and noblest form of manhood; and to aid down-trodden humanity in its efforts to achieve higher social, economic and intellectual status.
ALPHA PHI ALPHA A BRIEF HISTORY Since its founding on December 4, 1906, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. has supplied voice and vision to the struggle of African-Americans and people of color around the world.
country. The visionary founders, known as the “Jewels of the Fraternity, are Henry Arthur Callis, Charles Henry Chapman, Eugene Kinckle Jones, George Biddle Kelley, Nathaniel Allison Murray, Robert Harold Ogle, and Vertner Woodson Tandy.
Alpha Phi Alpha, the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African-Americans, was founded at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York by seven college men who recognized the need for a strong bond of Brotherhood among African descendants in this
The Fraternity initially served as a study and support group for minority students who faced racial prejudice, both educationally and socially, at Cornell. The Jewel founders and early leaders of the Fraternity succeeded in laying a firm foundation for Alpha Phi Alpha's

principles of scholarship, fellowship, good character, and the uplifting of humanity. Alpha Phi Alpha chapters were established at other colleges and universities, many of them historically black institutions, soon after the founding at Cornell. The first Alumni Chapter was established in 1911. While continuing to stress academic excellence among its members, Alpha also recognized the need to help correct the educational, economic, political, and social injustices faced by AfricanAmericans. Alpha Phi Alpha has long stood at the forefront of the African-American community's fight for civil rights through leaders such as: W.E.B. DuBois, Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., Edward Brooke, Martin Luther King, Jr., Thurgood Marshall, Andrew Young, William Gray, Paul Robeson, and many others. True to its form as the “first of firsts, Alpha Phi Alpha has been interracial since 1945.
ALPHA PHI ALPHA TODAY Alpha Phi Alpha today continues its commitment to members of the Fraternity and the AfricanAmerican community through its national programs, partnerships and initiatives. Additionally, through the reestablishment of the groundbreaking Alpha University training program, the Fraternity has rededicated itself to fostering a spirit of Brotherhood within the ranks of the Fraternity, preparing a new generation of leaders and bringing consistency to chapter operation and to the implementation of the Fraternity's national programs.

NATIONAL PROGRAMS The fraternity’s national programs are community outreach mentoring initiatives that have been adopted by the organization’s governing body and mandated for implementation by all of its chapters. The organization’s national programs include: GO–TO–HIGH SCHOOL, GO–TO–COLLEGE The “Go-to-High-School, Go-to-College” program, established in 1920, concentrates on the importance of completing secondary and collegiate education as a road to advancement. Statistics prove the value of this extra impetus in making the difference in the success of young African-American men, given that school completion is the single best predictor of future economic success. Through the Go-toHigh-School, Go-to-College educational initiative, young men receive information and learn strategies that facilitate success. Alpha men provide youth participants with excellent role models to emulate.

PROJECT ALPHA Project Alpha is a collaborative effort between the March of Dimes Foundation and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. This program was developed to increase the knowledge of the African-American male of the consequences of teenage pregnancy from the male perspective. This program seeks to assist young men in developing an understanding of their role in preventing untimely pregnancies through responsible attitudes and behaviors. The goals of Project Alpha are to: reduce the rate of adolescent sex and pregnancy; stress the concept of abstinence as a personal choice while promoting the use of contraceptives to those that choose to be sexually active; increase the knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the human body and the awareness of sexually transmitted infections; clarify and emphasize the roles and responsibilities of fatherhood; and reduce the rate of sexual abuse and violence among African-American teens.
94TH GENERAL CONVENTION | BALTIMORE, MD | JULY 12-16, 2017
A VOTELESS PEOPLE IS A HOPELESS PEOPLE “A Voteless People is a Hopeless People” was initiated as a national program of Alpha during the 1930's when many African-Americans had the right to vote but were prevented from voting because of poll taxes, threats of reprisal, and lack of education about the voting process. Voter education and registration has remained a dominant focus of this outreach activity for over 65 years. In the 1990s, the focus has shifted to include political awareness and empowerment.
A. SPECIAL PROJECTS Alpha Phi Alpha’s special projects are programs and activities that are sustained through collaborative efforts, memoranda of understanding, and/or outside financial assistance, which Chapters are encouraged to implement. Current Special Projects include: (1) Big Brothers, Big Sisters of America (BBBSA) mentoring partnership— implemented in 1991, Alpha Phi Alpha and BBBSA assist each other in mentoring African-American boys and young men. (2) Boy Scouts of America—through this alliance, Alpha Phi Alpha focuses on mentoring through the Scouting program. (3) Leadership Development Institutes—the program prepares outstanding high school students in the vital skills of leadership, college preparation and effective group interaction.
COLLEGE LIFE TO CORPORATE LIFE INITIATIVE (C2CTM) In concert with the mission of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., the College Life to Corporate Life Initiative (C2CTM) was created to develop the human resources of Alpha Phi Alpha and cultivate mutually beneficial relationships with corporate partners resulting in rewarding career opportunities for the members of Alpha Phi Alpha and increased critical mass of diverse talent for its corporate partners.

ALPHA PHI ALPHA’S FOUNDATIONS THE JEWELS PROJECT The leadership of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., in partnership with its non-profit, charitable affiliate, the Alpha Phi Alpha Education Foundation, Inc., recently created “The Jewels Project” committee. The goal of the committee and The Jewels Project is to reclaim, restore, and revive, historic sites in Ithaca, New York, that are a part of American history and were instrumental to the founding of Alpha Phi Alpha: namely, 411 East State Street and 421 North Albany Street. 411 East State Street was the early meeting place of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, and, 421 North Albany Street was the meeting place of the social study club, a precursor to the fraternity. THE ALPHA PHI ALPHA CHARITABLE FOUNDATION The Alpha Phi Alpha Charitable Foundation is a nonprofit foundation dedicated to uplifting humanity. The mission of the foundation is to promote scholarship and academic achievement and provide resources, services and advocacy to the global community. Recent efforts of the foundation have been focused on urban education and growing resources and partnerships to aggressively attack the lack of innovation, achievement and preparation often found in these

environments. Some current programmatic efforts include technology-based efforts to maximize the human capital found in our inner-city school systems and prepare them for future academic and corporate success. The foundation is also developing a scholarship program for collegiate youth who wish to enter the academic field and work in disadvantaged urban school districts. Former Senator Edward Brooke provided the initial funding for this scholarship effort. THE ALPHA PHI ALPHA EDUCATION FOUNDATION, INC. The Alpha Phi Alpha Education Foundation, Inc. is the non-profit charitable arm of the Fraternity, which focuses on scholarship, programs, and training and development of the membership. Education Foundation encompasses the implementation of Go-toHigh School, Go-to-College, Project Alpha, Voter Education / Registration efforts, The Belford V. Lawson Oratorical Contest, the Collegiate Scholars Bowl, Leadership Development Institutes, and the professional and personal development thrusts of the Fraternity-Alpha University. THE ALPHA PHI ALPHA ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT FOUNDATION, INC. The purpose of the Alpha Phi Alpha National Community Economic Development Foundation is to “promote and encourage economic development in minority and disadvantaged communities by expanding the opportunities for the residents of those communities to enter into, own, manage, operate and / or be employed in business enterprises, which are based upon the substantial participation of the low income community.” Additionally, the Foundation’s
aim is to promote a dynamic business environment in under-served communities through franchise opportunities, family financial planning and an aggressive Wealth Building Initiative.
WORLD POLICY COUNCIL The fraternity formed its much heralded World Policy Council in 1996 to address United States national and foreign policy issues. At its inception, Former U.S. Senator Bro. Edward W. Brooke of Massachusetts, the first African-American to serve in the Senate in the 20th century, was named chairman of the council. Senator Brooke succeeded by Bro. Dr. Horace G. Dawson, Jr., former Ambassador to Botswana. The Council’s formation reflects two realities in America: 1) The U.S. government’s national agenda has become more closely linked to world affairs and non-governmental organizations are part of the network of influential voices in foreign affairs. 2) Alpha Phi Alpha’s legacy of activities in civil rights and education has broadened to include foreign policy. The Fraternity’s leadership has been careful to stress that Alpha Phi Alpha’s new foreign policy interest will not diminish the organization’s involvement with domestic issues.

AWARD OF MERIT
OTIS MOSS, JR. THEOLOGIAN
“The greatest challenge in life is to find a sacred balance between three worlds: The world it was, the world it is, and the world of not yet. Now, the God that kept us through what was yesterday is the God who keeps us in these dangerous and difficult times today. And that same God will lead each of us and this congregation into new possibilities, greater victories, and more beautiful tomorrows. - Reverend Doctor Otis Moss, Jr.
Theologian, pastor, and civic leader the Reverend Dr. Otis Moss, Jr. is one of America’s most influential religious leaders and highly sought-after public speakers. A native of LaGrange, Georgia, Moss was born on February 26, 1935. He is the son of Magnolia Moss and Otis Moss, Sr., earning his B.A. degree from Morehouse College in 1956 and his masters of divinity degree from the Morehouse School of Religion/Interdenominational Theological Center in 1959. He also completed special studies at the Inter-Denominational Theological Center from 1960 to 1961 and earned his D.Min. degree from the United Theological Seminary in 1990. From 1954 to 1959, Moss served as pastor of the Mount Olive Baptist Church in LaGrange, Georgia. From 1956 to 1961, he also served as pastor of Atlanta’s Providence Baptist Church and therefore, simultaneously led two congregations from 1956 to 1959. From 1961 to 1975, he pastored the Mount Zion Baptist Church in Lockland, Ohio, and in 1971, he served as co-pastor, with Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Sr., at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta. In 1975, he was called to pastor Olivet Institutional Baptist Church in Cleveland, Ohio, previously the largest 92
African American church in the state. During his time at the church, besides continuing to be a sought-after speaker and influential figure in social justice movements, he was an advisor to President Jimmy Carter and also befriended such figures as Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, Oprah Winfrey, and Jesse Jackson. His service to Ohio and the United States has been recognized by Governors of Ohio, the Ohio House of Representatives, Ebony Magazine, the Cleveland Press, the Call and Post, the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Black Professional Association of Cleveland, the American Red Cross of Greater Cleveland, Project Love: Remember the Children Foundation, The Cleveland Jewish Committee and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Dr. Moss is a life member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., and Sigma Pi Phi Boulé, to name a few. In 1997, in conjunction with University Hospitals Health System, Dr. Moss helped to establish the Otis Moss, Jr. – University Hospitals Health Center that offers a wide range of primary and specialty care medical services.

Moss has long advocated for civil and human rights and social justice issues for most of his adult life. Having been a staff member of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., he currently serves as a national board member and trustee for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Non-Violent Social Change. In 1994, he was the special guest of President Bill Clinton at the peace treaty signing between Israel and Jordan, and,
IN MY TIME AND IN MY SPACE, BY GOD'S GRACE, I CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE. in that same year, he led a special mission to South Africa. Moss has long-been a sought-after speaker, lecturing at hundreds of colleges and churches throughout the world, including at the Oxford Roundtable at Oxford University and in the Lyman Beecher Lecture Series at Yale University, and the National Cathedral in Washington
D.C. He has also spoken in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, Jordan, Israel, and South Africa. During the last presidential election, Moss proudly threw his support behind Democratic nominee, Secretary Hillary Clinton. He said she exemplified the values dearest to him and treated everyone with fairness. The same can be said of Moss. Moss has received several awards and honors, including Human Relations Award from Bethune Cookman College in 1976, The Role Model of the Year Award from the National Institute for Responsible Fatherhood and Family Development in 1992, Leadership Award from the Cleveland chapter of the American Jewish Committee in 1996, and an Honorary Doctor of Divinity from LaGrange College in 2004. AWARD OF HONOR
THE HONORABLE ERIC HOLDER LAWYER “One
of the things I learned is that you've got to deal with the underlying social problems if you want to have an impact on crime - that it's not a coincidence that you see the greatest amount of violent crime where you see the greatest amount of social dysfunction.” - 82nd Attorney General Eric Holder
94TH GENERAL CONVENTION | BALTIMORE, MD | JULY 12-16, 2017
95
As the first African-American to hold the office of United States Attorney General (USAG), Eric Holder had a lot to measure up to, but he was equal to the task. Born in Bronx, N.Y., to parents from Barbados, his father, Eric Himpton Holder, Sr., arrived in the U.S. at the age of 11 and became a real estate broker later in life. His mother, Miriam, was born in New Jersey and worked as a telephone operator. As a young man, Holder was selected to participate in a program for gifted and talented students in the fourth grade while attending school in Queens, N.Y. Holder is a 1969 graduate of Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan and attended Columbia University, where he played freshman basketball. He earned a bachelor's degree in American History in 1973. He went onto get his Juris Doctor from Columbia Law School in 1976. He worked for the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund during his first summer and the United States Attorney during his second summer. As part of the President Bill Clinton administration, he was named deputy attorney general and worked for Attorney General Janet Reno. He received unanimous confirmation in the senate even though he

was under fire by some for his anti death penalty stance. After the historic inauguration of President Barack Obama, Holder was soon named to the post of Attorney General. He had been a vocal representative for hate crime legislation after the horrific murders of Matthew Shepard, a young gay man who was beaten to death and James Byrd, Jr., a

legislation that was found to punish minorities, particularly young men of color, harder than anyone else. As the USAG, he emphatically stated that he would not continue to push for tougher and longer sentencing. Rather, he chose a more moderate route that favored drug courts where offenders could find a way around felony charges that often held them back from employment, housing, and other upwardly mobile opportunities.
position of “preclearance” which forces states who wish to change their voting laws to measure up to the VRA’s requirements before passing new legislation. Much of the VRA was disrupted by the 2013 Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) decision, Holder vs. Texas, which was 5-4 against Holder. He brought the lawsuit against the state when attempts at redistricting were seen as flawed and a violation of the VRA.
In 2011, Holder made the bold decision to stop defending the “Defense of Marriage Act” (DOMA) that prohibited same-sex marriage and claimed that same-sex marriage that he felt was harmful to the fabric of America. The decision had many far-reaching civil rights and immigration implications which spared many from having to be deported from their same-sex spouses to their country of origin and allowed greater freedoms for same-sex couples who needed to make important decisions for their long-term spouses before same-sex unions were legalized.
He has been nationally recognized for his work in law; he was featured in the 2007 edition of The Best Lawyers in America, and in 2008 Holder was named by The National Law Journal as one of "The Most 50 Influential Minority Lawyers in America" as well as by Legal Times for being one of the "Greatest Washington Lawyers of the Past 30 Years."
As a staunch defender of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 (VRA), Holder has long worked to protect the law, even as many have attempted to dismantle it. He believes in a
Currently, Holder is a partner with his former law firm, Covington and Burling. He is also working to support Democratic candidates for office as a member of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee. Holder is married to Dr. Sharon Malone, an obstetrician. They have three children. The Holders reside in New York City.

AWARD OF HONOR
THE HONORABLE MITCHELL J. LANDRIEU MAYOR
“There is nothing here that's broken that can't be fixed, but it won't happen on its own. It's going to require a huge lift by the entire country of the United States of America and people on the ground taking personal responsibility for themselves.” - Mayor Mitchell J. Landrieu City of New Orleans, Louisiana
94TH GENERAL CONVENTION | BALTIMORE, MD | JULY 12-16, 2017
99
Mitch Landrieu was sworn in as the 61st Mayor of New Orleans on May 3, 2010 with a clear mandate to usher in a new era of peace and prosperity in New Orleans. On February 1, 2014, Mayor Landrieu was re-elected to a second term. He is the first mayor in the city to be elected by majorities of both white and African-American voters. Under Landrieu, New Orleans has become America’s best comeback story and one of the fastest growing major cities in America. Since 2010, New Orleans has been ranked as the #1 metropolitan area for overall economic recovery by the Brookings Institute and as America’s Best City for School Reform by the Fordham Institute. New Orleans also received the World Tourism Award for travel and hospitality industry. Landrieu previously served as Louisiana’s Lieutenant Governor for six years, leading the effort to rebuild the tourism industry and create jobs. He launched the Cultural Economy Initiative to quantify and grow jobs in Louisiana’s culture, music, food, film and art industries. He also created the first in the nation Office of Social Entrepreneurship to advance social innovation by supporting the creation and growth of the most innovative, measurable and sustainable

solutions to the social problems affecting Louisiana's citizens. At the State, Landrieu led the legislative effort to reform Louisiana's juvenile justice system with a focus on rehabilitation and reform as opposed to punishment and incarceration. As Lieutenant Governor, chaired the Juvenile Justice Commission. Both as Lieutenant Governor and Mayor, Landrieu gained extensive experience overseeing homeland security and emergency preparedness efforts. As Lieutenant Governor, he was the second-in-command in the State’s Emergency Operations Center for Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, Ike and Gustav. As Mayor, Landrieu has led preparedness, response, and recovery operations for Tropical Storm Lee and Hurricane Isaac, as well as homeland security operations for major special events including Mardi Gras and Super Bowl XLVII. In spring of 2017, Landrieu oversaw the removal of some of the worst reminders of his city’s connection to slavery--monuments to the Confederacy that were hurtful to many for years. In his speech just hours before a monument to General Robert E. Lee came down, he said, “To literally put the
94TH GENERAL CONVENTION | BALTIMORE, MD | JULY 12-16, 2017
confederacy on a pedestal in our most prominent places of honor is an inaccurate recitation of our full past, it is an affront to our present, and it is a bad prescription for our future.”
“RACE IN AMERICA IS NOT A PROBLEM YOU CAN GO OVER, OR AROUND, OR UNDER. YOU'VE GOT TO GO THROUGH IT.” Committed to helping his city prosper and grow, Landrieu is a man of integrity who continues to fight for racial equality in New Orleans. He desires to maintain its characteristic beauty while eradicating the harmful poison that racism has sometimes come into his city, especially within its law enforcement divisions where abuse of power was a sad hallmark in a place that had a large African American population.
Landrieu has been a practicing attorney for fifteen years and was president of International Mediation & Arbitration, Ltd. He is a member of the Supreme Court Task Force on Alternative Dispute Resolution which was responsible for developing the pilot mediation program in Orleans Parish. Landrieu is trained in mediation and negotiation by the Harvard Law School Negotiation Project, the American Arbitration Association, and the Attorney Mediator's Institute. Landrieu has also taught alternative dispute resolution as an adjunct professor at Loyola University Law School. Landrieu was educated at Jesuit High School of New Orleans, Catholic University in Washington D.C., and earned a law degree from Loyola University. The Mayor and his wife Cheryl, who is a lawyer serving as Clerk of the Louisiana 5th Circuit Court of Appeals, are raising five children of their own.
Formerly, Landrieu represented the Broadmoor neighborhood in the Louisiana House of Representatives for 16 years.

ALPHA AWARD OF MERIT & ALPHA AWARD OF HONOR
RECIPIENTS In 1952, the General Convention established the Alpha Award of Honor and The Alpha Award of Merit. These have become, by tradition and practice, our greatest awards. The awardees were initially chosen by a committee headed by the venerable Brother Taliaferro (Tolly) Harris. At some point in our history the selection became a function of the Office of the General President. In recent years the Award of Honor has been presented to non-members and the Award of Merit to members.

Al Jazeera Media Network news editor BROTHER JEFF BALLOU knows a few things about shattering expectations. He helped lead the expansion of the Middle Eastern media company into North America in 2006. He was recently elected to the office of president at the National Press Club (NPC) in D.C., a 110-year-old organization that helps protect journalists and their freedom of speech in every medium. He is the first African American to hold the office of NPC president. Ballou, a Pittsburgh, P.A. native, has been working in media for over 25 years. He is a graduate of Taylor Allderdice High School in Pittsburgh, and earned a bachelor's degree in journalism and African-American studies from Penn State University. Ballou is also a Hearst Broadcast News Fellowship, and took graduate coursework and taught at Howard University while earning a master's degree in journalism and public affairs from American University. With his storied career, Ballou has earned many accolades for team coverage conferrals such as DuPonts via Columbia University, Peabodys from the University of Georgia, Edward R. Murrows from the Radio Television Digital News Association, Emmys from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, and spot news awards from the Associated Press. Ballou previously worked at WTTGTV/FOX 5 DC as a planning editor, at CONUS as a general assignment and later, White House producer. He also has worked at C-SPAN, WAMU, WTOP and National Public Radio. He is a resident of Washington, D.C. 110
Immediate past NAACP president BROTHER CORNELL BROOKS is a civil rights attorney, social justice advocate, fourth generation ordained minister, and coalition builder. It’s why he was so eager to lead the nation’s top civil rights organization. Born in El Paso, Texas, Brooks was raised in Georgetown, South Carolina. He picked up his bachelors degree with honors in political science from Jackson State University, a Master of Divinity from Boston University School of Theology, where he was a Martin Luther King Jr. Scholar; and a J.D. from Yale Law School, where he served as senior editor of the Yale Law Journal and member of the Yale Law and Policy Review. Williams enjoyed a judicial clerkship in the fourth circuit for former Chief Judge Sam J. Ervin III on the U.S. Court of Appeals. MARCH OF DIMES President Franklin Roosevelt's personal struggle with polio led him to create the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis at a time when polio was on the rise. Better known as the March of Dimes, the foundation established a polio patient aid program and funded research for vaccines developed by Jonas Salk, MD and Albert Sabin, MD. These vaccines effectively ended epidemic polio in the United States. Its original mission accomplished, the foundation turned its focus to preventing birth defects and infant mortality. The March of Dimes has led the way to discover the genetic causes of birth defects, to promote newborn screening, and to educate medical professionals and the public about best practices for healthy pregnancy. Since 2003, our fight to save babies has been strongly characterized by our Prematurity Campaign. The rising incidence of premature birth has demanded action, and the March of Dimes has responded by initiating an intensive, multi-year campaign to raise awareness and find the causes of prematurity.
PEACE CORPS For more than five decades, Peace Corps Volunteers in 140 countries have demonstrated ingenuity, creativity, and grit to solve critical challenges alongside community leaders. Through the years, Peace Corps Volunteers have been connected by their passion for service and love for their host countries. The transformative impact of the Peace Corps on the communities we serve and the Volunteers themselves can be measured in many ways. A shared cup of tea with a host mother that leads to a greater understanding of Americans. A new school library built, or a safe latrine where there wasn't one before. A young boy prepared to serve his own community, a young girl who sees herself as equal to her male classmates. A Volunteer with a clear career path and a lifelong passion. Some, inspired by their service, stay in education or health-related professions, or choose to join the Foreign Service. Returned Peace Corps Volunteers are working as journalists, writers, members of Congress, and even astronauts.
