The Raven

T

his collection was inspired by Edgar Allan Poe. I was required to create a collection based on a Historical character and I chose him as my muse. I had chosen him because in high school I had read numerous poems and shorts stories by him and

I was always intrigued by his work and by his persona. This collection has only 5 pieces for a women’s wear collection.

I

t was inspired by volume in the 1900’s women’s dresses. In the 1900’s dresses were all about volume and accentuating the waist. I took these two focal points but gave it a modern twist. The mood of this collection was very dark and romantic. The

focal points on the collection were the shoulders, neck and waist. Something very accentuated in 1900’s dresses. This was one of my favorite collections to create. I felt the most inspired since Edgar Allan Poe was a great poet. I believe this was my favorite because of the diversity in all the pieces of the collection.

Nature flows

F

or this project I was required to chose opposite styles in design. The elements were linear and organic and rough and delicate. I chose to create a collection

based only on organic movements. My inspiration piece was the ocean and its flora and fauna. My main sources of inspiration were the Spanish dancersand the movements of the anemones under water. When I thought of Spanish dancer all I could think about were ruffles, this collection was strictly made of ruffles. This was my first collection made ever and I feel very proud of my self of creating this collection.

Going Tribal

F

or the last project we were required to create a 3D garment based on any tribe in human society. I decide to create a collection based on the Samburu tribes in Ethiopia. This tribe is well known for it’s

colorful beaded necklaces and their bright colors. For this last collection I was required to make a 12 piece collection plus a 3D garment.

F

or my 3D piece I took different types of brightly colored fabric and sew it together creating a fulllength skirt. Then I created a cotton crop top hand sewn with cotton cording. This cotton cording

wrapped around the body just like the neckles wraps around the neck, immitating its movement. This project was very challenging because, was it not only 12 pieces in a collection but we had to execute the design. This was my first time using an industrial design sewing machine. I was very happy with the results of both the designs and the 3d garment.

Cotton Bride fter I had finished with the last project my Introduction to Fashion professor suggested me to participate in the Cotton Inc. competition. She saw my 3D garment and thought that the technique and the material were perfect for the completion.

I

auditioned with a Fashion design student, Laura Casal and a fibers student, Kresten Nord. We decided to create a hand made ,95% cotton wedding dress. We created a corsette made out of cotton cording utilizing basketry techniques. The material is very soft and delicate but by using the basketry technique

we managed to create structure and stiffness with such a soft and heavy material. The dress was made as a one of a kind hand made piece. The skirt was made out of cotton as well and we used tea to dye the fabric the perfect shade of beige in order for the skirt to match the dress.

W

e proceeded to the finals in the completion. We were very happy with how the project turned out because the piece looked just like the avant garde sketches we had made for the auditions. This was a challenge to create the intricate structures we had made in the designs and we accomplished it.

he design on the left was the final design and the 3D garment that was created for the Cotton Inc. competition. -This garment is made of 95% cotton and it is all hand made. -The most surprising aspect of this garment is the softness of the material. Even thought it is soft it still holds its rigid shape; do to the basketry technique we utilized to produce the garment.

I

was born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico. I studied in the very prestigious Colegio Puertorriqueño de Niñas. I have always been interested in fashion as an artistic way of expression. I had never had the opportunity to learn how to sew or draw but I still read as much as possible about what

was going on in the industry. When the time came to graduate from high school and decide my career I knew I wanted to pursue the fashion industry. I decided to enroll in the Savannah College of Art and Design, Savannah campus and pursue a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Fashion Marketing. This career is perfect for me because it involves two important factors in my life: Fashion and Marketing. Marketing has been a very big influence in my family. My aunt has a promotions agency called Metro Promotions where I worked summer breaks during high school.

I

n January 2011 my family received the news that my father was going to be relocated to Singapore. We all packed our bags and moved from San Juan, Puerto Rico to Singapore. This experience has opened my eyes and has brought new experiences and knowledge. I now travel from place to place from

Singapore to Savannah, from Savannah to Puerto Rico and Singapore. Living in Singapore has made aware of the international business and it’s culture. Moving to Singapore has been a blessing and I now know about the Asian culture from first hand experience. I am very grateful of this opportunity and plan to take full advantage of this experience. I will integrate all that I have learned from this opportunity to my work.
