The actual Albufeira’s name comes from the Arab name that means “Sea Castle” probably due to the proximity of the village to the sea or lagoon that was formed in the lower part of the area. With regards to its century history there are still heritages to be found. In the old town, don’t miss the opotunity to visit the Parish Church, the Archeological Museum and the Saint Sebastian Church which held a religious art exhibition. In the countryside do a visit to the Village of Paderne and visit the Acordeon Museum, the Parish Church and the Padern’s Castle built between the XI and XII centurys by the Moors. In Guia don’t miss the oportunity to visit the Parish Church with beautiful Panel tiles from the XVII century and take a try in our Chicken Piri Piri. By the sea, don’t miss the oportunity to visit Olhos de Água, a small Fisherman’s Village, where you can find submarine water springs during the low tide.

Food & Products
The diverse landscape in Albufeira is one of its biggest treasures, offering visitor’s unlimited sensations. The coast of Albufeira is protected by cliffs which shape and define the region, giving visitors kilometers of beaches, perfect for those who love the outdoors. Going inland, pathways are landscaped by carob bean trees, orchards, and almond trees, an array of colours and smells, the ideal scenery for walking and horse riding.
Culturally influenced by the Mediterranean people, the gastronomy that you can find in Albufeira and in general in the Algarve is rich in taste and simple in the making, what is called the Algarve's Mediterranean Diet, recognised by Unesco as Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

Birdwatching is something unique that can be experience in Salgado’s Lagoon. Between March and April, the lagoon becomes one of the best places in Portugal to observe the Garganey which visits it in large numbers. Between late August and September this is also the best place in the Algarve to see the Wood Sandpiper. Albufeira offers also several outdoor activities, such as surf, Stand up Paddle, golf, nautical sports, tennis and radical sports, making it the ultimate destination for fun packed, healthy and adventurous holidays for all the family. Year round warm weather also makes Albufeira the ideal location for sports training, with several quality facilities available.
The local gastronomy is essentially fish and various meat dishes, but also cheek peeks, olives, olive oil, bread, vegetables, cabbage, fruits, cheese, onions, sea foods, poultry, eggs, and wines, chopped tomatoes, onion and garlic. Connected to the sea, the food that you can find in the region is flavoured by the sea, where freshly caught sardines, sole, bass and sea food are always on the table. A rich and varied gastronomy, renowned for using local ingredients such as carob bean, orange, almond and fig, make Albufeira especially famous for its regional cuisine and cake making.

Shopping
There are numerous references to the tradition and importance of wine-making in the Algarve. Several different peoples report that this art has been brought to the region by the Phoenicians, Greeks and Celts, but also the winery tradition of the Algarve is connected to the Muslim settling in the region. These peoples not only planted the vine but also exported the wine produced. Subsequently, the Christians then increased the economy around this product to their advantage.
Many of the shops are located in “Albufeira old town” and on "the strip". There you can find holiday merchandise like sunglasses, beach and casual wear, accessories, gifts and boutiques. In the summer there are lots of street stalls as well! There are also pharmacies, wine shops, post office and all the usual shops you would expect to find. If you are looking for genuine and local handicraft, check the cork shops.

After the second half of XIX century, with the development of the winery in the region, the wines started being recognised at a national and international level featuring the quality deserved. Its singular location, with both Mediterranean and Atlantic influences, confers special characteristics on its wines that are essentially determined by the terroir and by the skills of the grape grower and oenologist, with many justly classed as auteur wines.
Apart from the above-mentioned areas, all over the council you'll find various shops and shopping centres where you can spend a nice time and find all the main brands. In town, the Albufeira Shopping Centre, is the local shopping center, but in Guia, you will find the Algarve Shopping Centre, one of the biggest malls in the Algarve.
Amongst many excellent wines of the region, in Guia at “Adega do Cantor” in Albufeira, a good quality wine is produced at Quinta do Miradouro, owned by Sir Cliff Richard. He fell in love with Albufeira over 40 years ago, and to plant a vineyard in his property was his dream which came true. The wine cellar produces a red, white and rosé wine called Vila Nova and Onda Nova. Guided tours and wine tasting is done regularly.

“Albufeira... experience Ses atouts”it” “Albufeira... Weather The Algarve boasts a magnificent all year round climate, with over 3,000 hours sunshine a year and clear blue skies for most of the year! Algarve weather averages 12 hours of sunshine a day in the summer and 6 hours in the winter. Despite being on the Atlantic coast, the Algarve has a Mediterranean-like climate with mild winters and long, hot summers.

For Algarve holidays during the summer months, packing is simple because you just need to think terribly hot! If you are coming at any other time of the year, you will want to know more about average daily Algarve temperatures throughout the seasons so you know what to pack and what you can plan for things to do in the Algarve. From December to February are the coldest months of the year, air temperatures average between 10°C and 16°C but temperatures in the sun are regularly in the low 20's. During the spring, temperatures in the Algarve are around 18°C to 20°C, and in May it's really more like summer. June to September are the hottest months and temperatures are around the mid 20's in the shade and 30°C plus in the sun. October and November are usually pleasant, months being just a little cooler than the height of summer, but with temperatures in the low to mid 20's. It's not at all unusual to spot people sunbathing on the beaches in November!
