hen Frank Spena Jr. of Elmira, New York bought his 1969 Chevy Impala Sport Sedan 25 years ago, it had a 350 small block engine, Turbo Hydra-Matic 350 transmission, and 110,000 miles on the odometer. Frank had the car restored in 1995 and continued to modify it little by little over the years. It was treated to a fresh coat of blue paint in 2008 and he now calls it “Molly” after the subject of the song “Devil with a Blue Dress On” recorded in 1966 by Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels. The four-door hardtop Impala also sports fender skirts, so it is a bit of a sleeper considering its considerable performance modifications. It now has an all-aluminum LS3 engine with around 540 hp mated to a Tremec Magnum 6-speed manual transmission, ceramic coated Hedman equal length racing headers, Flowmaster mufflers, custom built cold air intake with a K&N filter, and Wilwood 4-wheel disc brakes.

DO YOU HAVE AN AWESOME RIDE YOU WANT US TO SHARE?

Additionally, it has a Mosler differential with 3:91 gears and posi, Hotchkis rear control arms, Viking adjustable coilover front suspension, Global West front control arms, and 16” American Torq Thrust D rims. Frank not only takes “Molly” to car shows occasionally, but also enjoys driving his car. He has had the car on a ¼ mile dragstrip and auto crossed it in Sports Car Club of America Solo II racing. It has also turned hot laps on the road racing circuits at Road America and Watkins Glen International. Frank says it handles really well for a big car with nearly perfect front to rear weight balance with a half of a tank of gas. This past August, the car was driven to Detroit to participate in the 2018 Woodward Dream Cruise. The picture you see in this article was taken at Belle Isle Park in Detroit. When Frank says he enjoys driving his car, he is not kidding as it currently has over 220,000 miles on it.

1989 CHEVY SILVERADO 2500 Words and photos by MIKE MASTRACCO

I

t was the summer of 1988 when Ron Reardon decided to replace his current plow truck, a Chevy 4-wheel drive with well over 300k on the clock. Ron’s intention was to order what he wanted and needed for his personal needs, as well as his job needs that took him many miles to many states. It was September of 1988 when Ron made the decision to order a new Silverado 2500 4-wheel drive, automatic, 5.7 liter motor along with the C6P package. This C6P package essentially made the 2500 truck tricked out like a heavy duty ¾ ton truck with an 8,600 GVWR. Ron still has the original window sticker from the day he picked up his truck from the dealer. This two-tone Brandywine – Quicksilver Metallic was to replace Ron’s previous work truck. As things change in life, so did the duties of this truck. Since the fall of 1988 when Ron picked up his new truck, it has not seen any winter driving along with limited use driving during our better seasons. Ron’s truck is all original from the factory, no re-

paint, all original interior. The only two non-factory items that Ron decided upon was to make his own rear bumper from ¼” diamond plate and steel, as he feels the factory rear bumpers would not hold up to the anticipated workload of the truck, and hand pinstriping by a local artist. Having A/C, cruise control, tilt wheel, an upgraded interior package, and a host of other features, Ron enjoys owning such a fine vehicle. With less than 28,000 miles, there is no wonder that he takes immaculate care of this fine specimen of American work history.

purchased my ’22 Model T in 2005. The car was fully restored in the early 90’s by a gentleman in Massachusetts. He sold it to a gentleman in Clinton, NY who sold it to the owner in Deansboro, NY, who was the owner I purchased it from. When I purchased the car, the aesthetics were spot on and I liked the originality. I did complete a number of mechanical upgrades so I could “drive” it to local events. Both the brakes and the parking brakes were upgraded with modern components and I installed new Kevlar-lined transmission bands. A previous owner had changed the original ignition system

APEX 18_Spring2019_KCREV.indd 7

to a modern distributor ignition, but I changed it back to the wooden four coil system which provides good service if it is maintained properly. As a member of the Mohawk Motorcades Car Club and its current president, I enjoy showing off the car at cruise-ins and car shows. The car sparks a great deal of inter-

est and I’ve become knowledgeable enough to answer the many questions I’m asked about the Model T. I get a real kick out of letting kids sit in the car and “toot” the horn; their facial expressions are priceless. Hopefully that experience will inspire their interest in the collector car hobby.

Love '39 DODGE PICKUP

Words by NICK GRAZIANO | Photos by ROBERT KENNEY JR

On a warm summer night, Caroline Tucker fell in love. Like most love stories, it was unexplainable. She knew what she was going to see, but once she saw it, that was it. Love at first sight.

at First Sight

It was supposed to just be a truck, another classic car in the rolodex of cars owned. But it was more. It was a cream-colored 1939 Dodge Pick-up, and to Tucker, it was perfect. “I saw it and was like, that’s it,” Tucker said. “Like it was meant to be.” She’s owned several classic cars: a 1967 Dodge Coronet, which she sold to her son, a 1969 Plymouth Fury, which was sold to her brother-in-law, and a 1964 Dodge 440 – which she almost forgot about – that was sold at the Syracuse Nationals. This truck was different. It found a special place in her heart that her other cars never reached. Tucker married into a family of car guys. Her father-in-law worked with cars. Her husband painted cars and motorcycles. Many in the family owned classic cars, too. It didn’t take her long to catch the bug for becoming a classic car enthusiast. “It’s a family thing,” Tucker said. With her classic cars sold, Tucker wasn’t really looking for something new. However, she had wanted a truck. She never owned one before. Tucker said she had talked about owning a truck with her husband for a while, but didn’t know which one she wanted. With luck, her nephew knew of one for sale. 10 // APEX AUTOMOTIVE MAGAZINE SPRING ISSUE 2019

A new garage was built on the property behind her nephew’s house, and at that garage the 1939 Dodge pickup sat – for sale. Once Tucker found out about it, she and husband Darryl, took the half hour drive north from Syracuse to Fulton, just to check it out. She saw it, loved it, and bought it that night. “It was the right place at the right time,” Tucker said. The 1939 Dodge pickup was the first year for the new, more attractive design. The grill design only lasted a year, being tweaked in 1940. The truck features an all-steel cab with a two-piece windshield that could be opened for increased

airflow at the turn of a crank. From 1939 to 1947, the truck was offered in half, three-quarter, and one-ton variations. There were several variations of the truck in general. It became a job specific truck, being used as a base for various kinds of work trucks, even Army trucks. There is not much known about Tucker’s truck other than a few changes made to the truck in its previous years. A new bed was built for it by a previous owner and the underneath is actually from a 1977 Chevrolet Camaro. Other than that, Tucker said the previous owner didn’t have much further knowledge of the truck.

Looking forward, Tucker said she might change the truck’s suspension or work on the interior. Although, she likes it the way it is. “She’s perfect to me,” Tucker said about the truck. If she paints it, or does too much work to it, she said she’s afraid she won’t want to drive it. That’s not what she bought it for. She bought it to drive, not to make it a show car. The rarity of a 1939 Dodge pickup in the Syracuse area makes it standout on its own already. The first time she brought the truck out to a car show was a kick-off show for last year’s Syracuse Nationals and she ended-up on the news with it. Tucker said she didn’t see another truck like it at the show and hasn’t since. Ever since she bought it, Tucker said she’s probably been more active in going to car shows than her husband. She signed up with two Mopar clubs and drove as much as she could, taking her grandchildren and sister out for rides, before she had to park the truck for the winter. Being a classic car family, going to the shows is an event they can all do together. “I just want to have fun (with the truck),” Tucker said. The truck drives differently than her previous classics, being a 1939 truck, but to her the difference is minimal. It’s perfect the way it is. She has no intentions of selling this classic. She’s been offered to sell it too, and at a price of more than $10,000 for what she paid. She turned it down. She always will. On that summer night in July, she fell in love with the truck. It found a special place in her heart and she has no intentions of letting it go. “It was meant to be,” Tucker said.

CHEVELLE SS 396 Words by JIM MACLACHLAN | Photos by CHRIS PENREE

We have all heard stories of guys that bought highly desirable muscle cars brand new back in the day. The stories

usually end with the car being sold for a song after living a hard life, either rusted out or banged

up from the abuse of a young and inexperienced driver. Sometimes life got in the way and the car was sold to help pay for a family, a new couch, or a spouse wanting more garage space. However, every once in a while, you hear of an original owner of one of these gems that still has that prized car. George

Metrick of Canastota, NY is one of these rare and very lucky guys. He is the original owner of his Emerald Turquoise 1967 Chevelle SS 396. He said over the years he almost sold it six different times. The last time was in 1974 when he actually had the cash in his hand, however his wife urged him to keep

the car. Looking back on it, he is glad he did. George ordered the car at East Syracuse Chevrolet around Christmas time in 1966. He was set to get out of the army in 16 weeks and wanted to have the car waiting for him. He had previously owned a 1966 Chevelle with a 327 cubic inch engine and a 4-speed trans-

mission. As he sat down to check off the boxes for the new car’s options, he knew he wanted more power and speed than his 1966 Chevelle to go drag racing. With that in mind, he went for the highest horsepower option available, the 396 cubic inch engine with 350 horses. He also selected bucket seats, a positraction limited-slip

differential, and a heavy-duty suspension. For 1967, the Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 transmission was a new option available with the SS 396. George selected it because he thought it might be good for racing. As it turns out, it is a somewhat rare option for a 1967 SS 396. The beautiful Emerald Turquoise color was chosen because George’s

George Metrick of Canastota is the original owner of this Emerald Turquoise 1967 Chevelle SS 396. father had a 1963 Chevy in that color and he really liked it. The total price for all this power and good looks was $3,057. George took delivery of the car in February 1967, but didn’t actually start drag racing the car until the summer of 1968. Two months and 1,000 miles into ownership, a mishap put the car in the body shop for the summer of 1967. However, when the summer of 1968 rolled around, the car was a frequent visitor at the ESTA Safety Park Dragstrip in Cicero NY, the Utica Rome Dragway, and some unofficial street racing. George said he placed third in points in top stock eliminator at Cicero in 1968 turning 13.30s - 13.40s. The car continued to be heavily raced in 1969 with its last run made in 1974. Life’s responsibilities took priority and the car sat idle until 1982, then

George started driving it occasionally. In 1990, the car was treated to a new coat of Emerald Turquoise paint and an engine refresh. The body was in great condition because the only winter weather it had ever seen was for just 10 weeks in 1967. After another few years of driving it occasionally, it was taken off the road for more refreshing. This time it was treated to a complete engine out detailing including new carpets, seat covers, headliner, and interior bits and pieces. The car emerged in 1999 as it sits today, with George completing all the work himself except for the paint. The odometer on the car just recently turned over the 60,000-mile mark, racking up about 20,000 miles since

1999. Although the car came with a 4-barrel carburetor, it now sports a Corvette tri power for a bit of extra eye appeal at car events. George continues to drive the car to cruises and local car shows, including the Syracuse Nationals. Last year he drove it to a car show at the Hemmings Motor News Magazine headquarters in Bennington, Vermont where he took home the trophy for Best Muscle Car. Apex Magazine would like to thank George Metrick for sharing his beautiful 1967 Chevelle SS396 with us.

A Dream Come True

KIM FIELDS' 1987 Z28 CAMARO Words by BOB SBLENDORIO Photos by CHRIS PENREE

“As a teenager I always wanted to be a car model and I finally got to be one. I’m 50, and finally got to be one! I was that excited about the [Apex] photoshoot of my car and me.” Finally, Kim Fields got her chance alongside her beloved mint 1987 Z28 Camaro. Growing up in the ‘80s the Z28 was always a car that Kim admired. The first one she owned was sold years ago due to some financial pressures at the time, but that burning desire to get another never went away. The next one had to be bone stock, so she searched extensively. She finally found one in Ohio, but she had to be “interviewed” first. Really? You would think that being willing to hand-over a bunch of money would do the trick, but not in this case. The owner insisted on an interview prior to looking at the car. The owner actually had an offer to sell the car locally, but the person was planning to tear-it-apart and make extensive modifications. That offer was declined. With a passing grade from the interview portion, Kim then headed to Ohio in a U-Haul truck pulling a trailer confident

The 1987 Z28 Camaro The 1987 Z28 is from the third-generation Chevrolet Camaro, introduced in 1982 and continued through the 1992 model year. They were available in 2-door coupe or convertible models. Through those years, the Camaros were available in a variety of engines and transmissions. The base model actually had a 151 ci (2.5 L) in-line 4-cylinder. Also available was a V-6, and the popular V-8, which was either a 305 ci (5.0 L) or 350 ci, (5.7 L).

that this was going to be the car. Upon arriving the owner took her to the garage where the car was parked. The owner opened the door and Kim developed a big problem — she started to hyperventilate with excitement — which she knew could cost her a lot more money when it came to the negotiating part of the deal. Yikes! Disguising her predicament, she gained her composure and went to work: first by asking a lot of questions, then crawling all over and under the car, and finally taking it for a test drive. “Oh, you hit a bug” the owner said to Kim when she got back, as he wiped it clean with a hanky. That gesture was the nail in the

coffin, so-to-speak. She had to have this car. They agreed to a price and she took the car back home. That was back in 2004, and since then it has been an enjoyment to own the car. She has entered it in several car shows, winning some trophies along the way.

Love of Cars…or anything with an engine Kim’s love of cars started when she learned to walk. Yes walk … not drive. That’s when her father would take her to car shows. She was constantly quizzed at identifying cars, and she did pretty well as she recalls. And since her father did all his own work on his cars, she would also help with the work as a way to spend time with her father. Her

mechanical prowess was jump started at a young age, and it’s something that has stayed with her over the years.

Back-in-the-Day Back-in-the-day, before Child Protective Service was too well known, Kim would be with her mother — in a knapsack on the back of a motorcycle — “riding all over hell,” when she was just a baby. When she was a little older, she was moved to the front, held in-place between her mother’s legs. And eventually, when a little older and able to hold-herself-up, she would ride on the back. That bike, a 1978 Honda Twinstar 185cc now owned by Kim, has a lot of sentimental meaning … “I survived!”

Kim Fields is not only a car enthusiast in her spare time, but is also a licensed FAA commercial hot air balloon pilot.

Personal Kim is an active member of the VW Club of CNY. She likes being involved in the club’s many activities, and the family-like atmosphere among the membership. Another hobby/business that Kim enjoys is piloting a hot air balloon. A licensed FAA commercial pilot for eleven years, she averages 25-30 flights per year. Most flights leave from Munnsville, New York. The flights typically head north towards Oneida for the morning flights (due to the

prevailing winds in the Stockbridge Valley), and south towards Route 20 for the evening flights. A seasoned pilot, she has also flown in balloon festivals in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and even France. Later this year she has been invited to fly at the 19th Annual Letchworth Red, White & Blue Balloon Rally at the state park, which is a popular and well attended event. Locally, if you see a balloon floating around — wave — it could be Kim at the controls.

Jack and Judy Dimbleby had a passion for cars long before joining the Mohawk Motorcades Car Club. Their love of cars goes back almost to their infancies. Both grew up in Central New York and cars have always been a part of their lives. In 1901, Judy’s grandfather, Glenn Clark, along with his father, James, opened James A. Clark & Company

Pictures of the Clark auto show it to be very similar to the one Henry Ford would produce years later. The next model they built in 1902 was more refined and was exhibited at

the New York Auto Show in Madison Square Garden in 1903. The Clark automobile is a fascinating story in itself. Jack’s love of cars goes back to his childhood when he would always ask for toy cars as presents. He has fond memories of his father fussing

over the family automobile, obsessed with everything working and running “just right.” Jack’s first car was an MG TC that he acquired when he was 19. While he doesn’t have that car, it is one of only a few that he did not keep as he and Judy have amassed an extensive collection of more than 25 cars over the years. The collection includes everything from a ’32 Chrysler to a ’75

Corvette and everything in-between. The 1932 Chrysler Imperial CH featured here is one of 1,002 produced. There are 12 known to exist today. Eight are known to be restored and drivable and a couple are strictly “parts” cars. This Chrysler Imperial was sold new in 1933 at a Maryland dealership. It was stored for many years in Quincy Point, Massachusetts before being purchased by Jim Mahar of Whitesboro in August of 1984. Jim drove it for several years before

having it fully restored by Jim Burke in 1997, a two-year endeavor. The interior remains original. Jack admired the car and purchased it in the mid ‘90s, trading his 1934 Dodge coupe and adding a little cash to the deal. In 1932 as the depression was starting to take a bite out of the luxury brands, Chrysler introduced its “second-series” Imperial. Smaller and lighter than its predecessor, the CH chassis still boasted a 135” wheelbase and a hefty 4,665 pounds. SPRING ISSUE 2019 APEX AUTOMOTIVE MAGAZINE // 25

The Imperial received the largest of Chryslers four straight-eight engines at just under 385 cubic inches that produced 125 HP. The car was built with a Stromberg downdraft carburetor and has a Delco-Remy ignition as part of its 6-volt system. The Imperial has a four speed multi range transmission. Chrysler touted its “floating power” using rubber engine mounts and other innovations to dampen the eight cylinder engine. Hydraulic four wheel brakes were standard. The original interior features leather seats and door panels, dual sun visors, carpeting, and a painted dash with an instrument cluster. Adding to the splendor of the exterior are dual side mounts, an external trunk, and wire wheels. Jack has the original “Instruction Book,” the equivalent to today’s owners’ manual. The 1932 Chrysler Imperial CH is truly a classic in that it is a standalone model. In 1933, Chrysler produced the smaller Imperial CQ which was more of a dressed up standard Chrysler than a true luxury car.

Jack and Judy enjoy driving the Imperial and they can be spotted at cruiseins like Dave’s Diner and other local events. The car was proudly displayed at the prestigious Concourse Invitational at Fountain Elms. Jack is always happy to show off the Imperial and the other cars in his collection. Judy, an accomplished artist, has featured the Imperial on a Christmas card she created and sent to family and friends. Recently, Paul Jackson, an internationally known watercolorist from Mississippi,

stopped by to photograph the Chrysler Imperial to use as a subject for his work. One glance and you see a true “classic.” It was truly a pleasure to spend some time with Jack and Judy. They were incredibly hospitable and so enthusiastic when talking about their collection, a loving couple who work hard, play hard and live life to the fullest.

'55 T-Bird High School Students Restoring 1955 Thunderbird to Raffle

orn in 1955, the “baby bird” being restored by high school students will be more than ready to leave the nest by the July 21 raffle drawing. In this case, the “nest” is the two-bay Spartan Garage right inside East Syracuse Minoa Central High School. This is the 14th car the upstate New York automotive technology students have built or restored and then raffled to fund the following year’s project. The nickname “baby bird” represents the first generation Ford Thunderbirds that were built as two-seaters. Students are restoring a 1955 Thunderbird, the first-year for the model. It has a 292 cu-

bic-inch V8 automatic engine. Painted an original color called “Thunderbird Blue” the car will also have a removable white hardtop and sport wide whitewalls with aluminum spoke wheels. “We just happen to work on cars because they’re cool and they fit in the garage. But the skills and abilities students develop in here can transfer to numerous trades. Cars, boats, trains or planes—it doesn’t matter—it’s all a similar process,” explained automotive technology teacher Ryan Beckley. The raffle car previously belonged to Stan Neu, a former Manlius, NY resident. His wife, Diane, loves the first generation Thunderbirds.

Photos provided by Spartan Garage “It was a great project for my son and I. We did a lot of work on it over 20 years, but life got in the way,” Mr. Neu explained. Preparing a move to Florida, Mr. Neu donated the Thunderbird to the Spartan Garage program so students could finish what he started. “I’m a real believer in this auto tech program and I’ve been impressed with the students. As a teacher, Ryan instills passion, experience and interest in his students,” explained Mr. Neu. The students definitely appreciate the program. “I look forward to going to class. It’s something different than normal schoolwork. For me it’s easier to learn with my hands than through a textbook,” explained high school senior Buddy Wolfe. “This program definitely helped me decide my career path. I’ve only gotten into cars the last few years. I found I really enjoy it and it’s what I want to do,” explained senior Tim Crouse. “Most high schools don’t even have a program where you can work on cars.

The 292 V8 and its transmission were reunited for the first time since 1974.  I love how we restore a car every year and get a complete experience from it. We also work on teachers’ cars too so we’re learning both the modern technology and the older technology,” said senior Wayne O’Neill. Students work on about 275 vehicles a year, most belonging to high school staff. “Many schools programs have a fleet of their own vehicles and they do simulated repairs. We do live work including tires, batteries, brakes, oil changes and light mechanical work. Each repair is unique and that car goes back out on the road so we have a high level of responsibility,” Mr. Beckley explained. “There is a social aspect and a camaraderie to working on cars, much like being in a sports program. It’s a journey. It’s finding parts and meeting people and doing the work throughout the process,” Mr. Neu said. “By donating the car, it feels good to be some small part of the program.” The ESM Spartan Garage Booster Club is a group of dedicated parents that assists with the raffle. The raffle funds the following year’s project vehicle. Proceeds also support graduating students who are motivated and driven, whether they are headed to the military, workforce, or college. The program depends on the many partnerships the high school program has developed through the years. Students benefit from hands-on internships as well as field trips. Many local businesses help with the annual raffle car project. This year the Spartan Garage also appreciated Mr. Neu’s Thunderbird donation. Among the many partners, East Syracuse Chevrolet paints the vehicle in their body shop. Ace Auto Trim helps with re-upholstering. Ray Miller builds the transmission. Saves Auto Body donates paint. Spartan Garage students display and talk about the vehicle and their work at car shows sponsored by numerous car clubs throughout the spring and early summer. The Thunderbird will be at the Syracuse Nationals, the Northeast’s largest car show, from July 19-21 at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse, NY.

Finishing touches on the dash by senior Devin Harrigan.

As in racing, Brandon says it is important to get involved in retirement savings as early as possible. “It’s important to just get some kind of retirement investment going as soon as possible. Kidd went on to run several races in the ARCA series, racing and even beating some names that you can watch on any given Sunday in NASCAR. During this time, he was also tapped to run a handful of SCCA Mazda Pro Playboy Cup series events, a series based on the Mazda Miata. Every car competing in this series is identical, which makes the racing very competitive and more of a test of driver skill than a test of who has the deepest pockets. So why compete in so many different

DATA POINTS Words by CHRIS GRAHAM | Photos provided by Spec13

N

o matter what facet of the automotive world you’re interested in, you’re most likely driven to push the limit of what you think to be possible. Whether it’s faster lap times, more horsepower, wider tires, or louder exhaust; the automotive world is driven by what’s measurable. Walk around any event where cars are the feature, and you will hear people ask, “How much power does it make?”, “How fast is it in the quarter mile?” and maybe even “How many MPG does it get?”. All of these questions can be answered by the same thing; data. When the racing enthusiast hears of data, their mind typically thinks of Formula 1 or prototype racing where teams of engineers are on stand-by analyzing thousands of data points streaming from their cars every second. But the origins of data in the racing world are actually quite humble. The first automobile race was held in the mid-1890s between Paris and Rouen in France. The fastest driver completed the 79mile race in just under seven hours, at an average speed of about 11 miles per hour; giving us one of the first data points within the racing world. Racing began shifting from point-to-point races to preplanned circuits, allowing teams to track lap times. Speedometers started making appearances in race cars allowing drivers to track the cars speed throughout the circuit. These data points allowed teams to gain an understanding of how top speed and cornering speed affected their lap times, allowing them to make tweaks to increase the performance of their cars. As instrumentation in race cars grew more sophisticated, so did the creativity of the

APEX 18_Spring2019_KCREV.indd 36

engineers and mechanics behind the cars. From taping pieces of yarn to the exterior of the car to check its aerodynamics, to sliding rubber bands on the shock absorber shaft to determine suspension travel, any piece of data that could be obtained was measured and highly valued. In the early days of downforce, wings were tested by mounting the wing to a “scale” in the back of a truck and then driving the truck down the road and measuring the downward force it applied to the scales. Techniques like these may seem crude, but they paved the way for modern engineers to design using hard data rather than driver intuition. Many of these techniques are still in use today by budget racers that cannot afford wind tunnel time or expensive sensors for their suspension. For years, teams would rely on these simple data points for car development and setup until the mid-1970s when computer technology began to creep into the world of data. Many know the famous Tyrrell P34 for being the first Formula 1 car to have six wheels, but that car also sported a second innovation; the first onboard data system. Tyrrell’s system used a standard cassette tape that was built to log pitch, yaw, throttle position, steering angle, and suspension movement. After the race, the cassette tape could be pulled and information could be printed out in the team’s garage. While the six wheel design of the P34 only lasted two years, the data logging system was here to stay.

If you're interested in any sort of performance driving, consider using data to help build a faster car and become a faster driver.

Modern Data loggers can replace traditional gauge clusters giving the driver only the information they need to see.

 Using just a simple overlay of speed, we

can see stark differences in two laps that were only a tenth of a second apart.

 Using the data output from a data system, we can take data analysis to the next level overlaying the data on top of a video.

In the late 1980s, teams pushed data logging even further to allow the cars to send packages of data to the team while the car was on the track. This allowed for engineers to make real time strategy calls based on current data from the car. Jumping forward to today, a modern F1 car is fitted with hundreds of sensors broadcasting in real time and, according to Williams’ F1 team, produces 30,000 gigabytes of data over the course of a race weekend for two cars. But don’t think that data analysis is only for professional teams with large budgets. Everyone, from beginners in HPDE to club racers like us at Spec13 Motorsports, can use data to help improve car setup, driver ability, and of course to establish bragging rights around the paddock. In close racing like Spec Miata, those that use data effectively will always have an advan-

tage on those that do not. There are a multitude of inexpensive apps that can turn your smartphone into a data logger to track your lap times. Companies like AiM have developed various tiers of data systems, ranging from the full race-dash and data logger system like the one used in Chris Graham’s Spec Miata, to the affordable, yet capable AiM Solo. If you are interested

in any form of performance driving, whether it’s drag racing, auto crossing, or track driving, consider using data to help build a faster car and become a faster driver. If you have any questions about data or any other topics, please message us on our Spec13 Motorsports Facebook or Instagram page or write us an email at Spec13Motorsports@gmail.com.

Generations in the Hemmings

Pictured left to right: Scott, John and Greg Hudson

Great Race

Words by MIKE MASTRACCO | Photos by KATHY HUDSON We first covered the Hemmings Great Race in our spring 2018 issue. John Hudson and his grandson Scott Hudson have been a team since their first Great Race in 2006. Now this year something unusual happened. John’s son, Scott’s father, had a chance to pick up driving duties in the 2018 Hemmings Great Race himself. For the first time in the history of the Great Race three generations of family participated. This past year’s Great Race started in Buffalo, NY on Saturday, June 23, 2018 and finished in Nova Scotia, Canada, on Sunday, July 1st. A total of 118 cars, worth over $5 million, from around the world entered this race with the oldest one being a 1916 Hudson. Less than a month away from the main event John Hudson was helping a com-

petitor in Rochester when he received a phone call from Larry Tribble, another competitor located in Connecticut. Larry asked John if he knew anyone who might take over the driving duties of his 1955 Chevy model 210, as he would be unable to make this year’s event. John said, “Yes I may have a driver for you.” Very quickly John talked to his son Greg and explained

the details to him. Greg was now a first time rookie driver in a world class event. It was the first time ever three generations of a family, John, his son Greg, and Greg’s son Scott, all Hudson’s, were now competing in the Hemmings Great Race. As mentioned, John and his grandson Scott have been participating since 2006 driving a 1940 Chevy Master with the Stove Bolt engine. Each year they improve their driving and navigating skills. This past year was no exception. They received 17 total aces, more than anybody else in this event, meaning a “zero” time for a timed event. As each day starts a new event, the clock starts at zero again, John and Scott were also overall winners for two days during the week. John and Scott placed third overall with a time of 1 minute and 13.95 seconds which is quite an achievement in itself. A second achievement was made this past year when John and Scott’s time beat good friends from Rochester Howard and Doug Sharp’s time of 1 minute and 14.58 seconds. Howard and Doug were also previous overall winners of this event in 2011 and 2015. This has been a goal for John and Scott for many years! When John’s son Greg accepted the driving duties of the number 55 Chevy 210 he knew of the race his father and his son participated in for so many years. However, being a new driver with less than a month to prepare was challenging. Greg met his navigator and was introduced to the car he would be driving just the day before

the start of the Great Race. After a few test runs he was ready to tackle the Hemming’s Great Race of 2018. Greg and his navigator, Brock Rookey, scored a total of three aces and placed 26th overall, darn good for a rookie driver. Talking with Greg, he said he it had been a grand time in his life. He

found out how stiff the competition is and how grueling the driving can be when each second counts. It was a challenge like he never partook in before. For 2019 the Hemmings Great Race will start in Riverside, CA and finish in Tacoma, WA. John Hudson was able to register for this year’s sold out event,

albeit with a new navigator. Replacing John’s grandson Scott will be Scott’s father Greg. First time navigating this grand event, Greg will be forming a new bond with his father John. We at Apex Automotive Magazine wish the new “Team Hudson” good luck on this year’s adventure. SPRING ISSUE 2019 APEX AUTOMOTIVE MAGAZINE // 43

Tire Rack Street Survival

COMES TO CENTRAL NEW YORK Words by PETE MAIO | Photos provided by Dennis Hesse

Here are two very sobering statistics: ●

Teens have an 89.2% chance of being involved in a crash during the first three years of driving.

Nearly 50% of teen driver fatality accidents involve a single vehicle.

F

or the past six years Tire Rack has been committed to addressing these issues through its Street Survival program for teen drivers and for the first time, thanks to the efforts of Dennis Hesse, the Street Survival program was held in Central New York at the Griffiss Business and Technology Park in Rome on April 29, 2018. When I caught up with Dennis, the teens and their coaches were just breaking for lunch after being on a slalom course. The quote of the day came from Dennis who said, “They killed a lot of cones out there.” The primary

emphasis of the school is a hands-on driving experience in real world situations. The driving is done in the students’ own cars where they learn about their vehicles’ handling limits and how to control them. Qualified coaches are in the car with the student throughout the entire day. The coaches come from local car clubs whose support is vital to the success of the program. Volunteers from local chapters of the Porsche Club of America, Sports Car Club of America, the Tappet Twirlers, and Corvette Club of Central New York all enthusiastically participated to make this event happen. Coaches must register online and meet the requirements of the program. There was also classroom time that included tech training and the New York State Police provided an instructor to talk about violations, distractions, and penalties. Since parents are encouraged to attend with their teen, I had a chance to speak to Mark Lamie and his daughter Hannah. Mark said it was well worth the

$95 fee and they taught his daughter so much more than he could have and more than she would learn from a “regular” driving school. Hannah said she wasn’t too excited when her dad told her about it, but was now glad she attended and would recommend it to her friends. Apex would like to salute Tire Rack, Dennis Hesse, and all the volunteers who brought this important life-saving program to Central New York.

Ordering auto parts for the modern age:

Tonquin Delivers

Jeffrey Lyman (left), and his father Jeff, co-founders of Tonquin.

Words by BOB SBLENDORIO Photos provided by Tonquin Innovation…it can’t be stopped. Technological innovations are always moving us forward: there is no going back. Tonquin, a Syracuse based start-up company, has plans to eventually go national with their automotive ondemand parts delivery system. The business plan is to implement the platform successfully in Syracuse, then roll-out the platform to other upstate New York cities, with the goal of taking the business national someday…probably sooner than later. The merits of the concept seem rock-solid and things are on the fast track for Tonquin. Jeffrey Lyman came up with the business model while still in college. The idea was an offshoot while planning a used parts business. Recognizing that any used parts business would require a delivery component, he came up with the idea of an on-demand type system; similar in concept to the well-known services like Uber or Grubhub. Knowing there was already a distribution system for delivering parts, Lyman knew a better, more modern system could be developed. The original used parts business idea was scrapped in favor of developing the Tonquin business plan. Jeffrey’s father, Jeff, is the owner of a local auto body shop in Syracuse, a business he has owned for the past 40

The Origin of

TONQUIN

Lyman came up with the business name from a passage in a business law textbook that he used in college. Business school taught him that the best names need to be recognizable and easily trademarked. For Lyman, the name Tonquin met those principles. Tonquin was the name of a merchant ship from the early 1800s, engaged in the trading of furs. It was purchased by John Jacob Astor (of NYC fame) in 1810, one of the wealthiest people in the United States. He purchased the ship to spearhead his interest in the maritime fur trade business.

years. When son pitched the idea to father—it was received with a “lukewarm reception” —initially. Jeffrey explained, “Dad lives and understands the whole concept of getting parts, so it didn’t take long and the light bulb went off for him to pursue this pretty quickly.” Today, father and son are the co-founders of Tonquin. The company was officially formed in August of 2017. The service was then launched in August of 2018 and things are moving very quickly. There was a lot of research and planning that took place, including the development of a brand new app by a NYC marketing firm. The app provides the software interface for users of the system. Their mission is to provide fast and reliable auto parts delivery for suppliers, dealers, retailers, and repair shops. The app interface provides the users the ability to review orders, view receipts, review driver status, and many other details. At the time of our interview there were over 70 drivers on-board so far, and that is expected to double in the next few months. The drivers work as sub-contractors and can work as much

as they desire. It’s all about a more efficient system of delivery. For any company with a large fleet, the projected savings are 30-50%. For smaller companies—that may be a little less efficient because of scale—there is an even greater opportunity for savings. By utilizing Tonquin’s service, the savings come from reduced fleets, maintenance, employees, and benefits. The opportunities are endless. Lyman explained they are in negotiations with three of the large auto parts chains, with the goal of launching pilot programs to further expand the service. Lyman, a recent college grad, wanted to acknowledge the support of many, including his father and girlfriend, Marisa. “Their support is very much appreciated during these busy times of getting the business going and now running it day-to-day,” Lyman said. Stay-tuned as Tonquin takes hold of the auto parts delivery space, with plans to “revolutionize the automotive repair industry.” Should be fun to watch and best-of-luck for continued success from the Apex team!

he procedure said to simply remove the three retaining fasteners holding the bearing housing to the knuckle and remove the wheel bearing. Yup, needless to say the guy that wrote this procedure is either an overwhelming optimist or clueless bookworm. Giving me the condescending term “Simply” as an adverb shows his lack of knowledge of what we in the area, or the great Northeast, refer to is natural lock tight…rust! Some call it the plague that consumes our classic cars. Because we live in an area were the State DOT is in cahoots with the vehicle manufactures to prepare a slurry of sloppy, sticky liquid oxide enhancer every winter to ensure our lightly treated carbon-based vehicle parts turn to a solid mass, or just simply disappear into road dust. Rust is a fact of life for all of us living up north. It is inevitable and can bring even the most skillful mechanic to his breaking point. Having to perform even the simplest tasks can turn into a major project when dealing with the stuff. Having a plan and a technique can reduce the risk. I use a hand-held sandblaster to remove loose rust scale and allow for better socket fit. Any exposed threads will clean up nice and allow further penetration of rust-buster liquids, shocking the system. Sometimes just shocking the bolt with an impact gun back and forth with a good penetrating oil of some kind can work. Do not turn the gun all the way up and risk breaking the fastener, you are just hammering the bolt to loosen the rust scale in-between threads or the flange on the head of the bolt. Ensure to coat the entire area concentrating on the threads if it’s a pass-through bolt. Do not try to take the bolt out on the first try.

If it moves, soak it with penitent oil and tighten it. Tightening the bolt will allow the penitent oil to wick back into the deeper threads and help loosen the fastener. Never just remove the rusted bolt, sometimes it can get tighter as it comes out and will break off. Some tool vendors sell an adapter that you can put on an air chisel to do exactly the same process. Striking the head of the fastener repeatedly especially with a bolt with a shouldered head will shock the threshold and help break-up the rust

and allow the penetration oil to creep or wick into the threads. Heat is also great, causing an expansion of the fastener bore. The idea is to heat the bore and get it to expand to allow the bolt some clearance to loosen. Be sure not to overheat and distort the materials. Some hardened components can be ruined with too much heat, low and slow is the best approach. Fasteners, if glowing red/orange, can be soft and will easily twist off and break. Oxyacetylene can get very hot fast, making for dangerous

situations in certain areas. A great tool is an inductor that is flameless and much safer for heating under a car in a small shop. It uses high frequency magnetic fields to push around current in the metal to generate heat. Great tool! Move slow; taking the time and planning ahead can be the difference between fastener removal and broken bolt extraction. Trust me, if it spins you win, take your time. Broken bolt extraction is not fun. Good luck and have fun.

Mohawk Motorcades Automobile Club

Words by NICK CARPARELLI Photos provided by the Mohawk Motorcades Automobile Club

T

he Mohawk Motorcades Automobile Club is currently celebrating its 63rd year. The club was established in 1956, with the only criteria for membership being a good sense of humor and an interest in things automotive. With that in mind, club members have enjoyed several fun-filled events and road trips over the preceding 6+ decades with opportunities to exercise and enjoy their old cars. A partial list of past special events includes tours of Finger Lakes Wine Country, an overnight trip to Ithaca, NY where club

members enjoyed an evening dinner cruise on Cayuga Lake, a historic tour of the Nicholas Herkimer Home, a cruise on the Erie Canal which included passing through a lift lock, several poker runs, and a cruise to Old Forge which included a scenic boat tour of the Fulton Chain of Lakes. Club members especially look forward to coming together once every year for a very special event, the Antique Car and Motorcycle Show at the Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute in Utica, NY. The annual judged show is sponsored by the Mohawk Motorcades, in conjunction with MWPAI. Various members of the club also assist with the adjacent Apex Invitational at Fountain Elms. The shows are on the final Sunday of the annual MWPAI Arts Festival. The Festival has been held every year since 1939, mak-

ing it the area’s longest running summertime celebration. In addition to the displays of antique and collector cars, the Festival includes live music, sidewalk art, mural painting, and much, much more. The 2019 Arts Festival will take place Tuesday, July 2 through Sunday, July 7, with the cars on display on the 7th. Further details and registration can be found on the MWPAI website www.mwpai.org. Club President Steve Grant reminds us that membership in Mohawk Motorcades is open to anyone and everyone, young and young at heart, with an interest in things automotive. Interested? Contact Steve at steve1920@verizon.net and make a reservation to attend one of our monthly member dinner meetings. Help us celebrate our 63rd year plus many more to come!

The 2019 MWPAI Arts Festival takes place July 2-7, with cars on display on the final day. 58 // APEX AUTOMOTIVE MAGAZINE SPRING ISSUE 2019
