the presence of homeless people is considered by many as bad for business, resulting in both subtle and overt efforts to push visible homelessness outside the downtown economic core. due to restrictions on how and when public spaces may be used, the homeless face criminalization for attempting to fulfill essential human needs. those accused of crimes such as public urination, illegal camping and tresspassing can be subjected to exclusion from several blocks in the heart of eugene. in a post-capitalist society, public spaces will be reappropriated by people and used to meet material needs.

material within the current capitalist system personal growth is measured by material benchmarks at stages of life.

for those left out of the economic system, provision of only material needs leads to lack of control over one’s life.

systems of consumption enforce a sequence of satisfaction of human needs, each a foundation for subsequent growth.

problem solving by a process of dialogue and collaboration can negate these material prerequisites for achieving agency in one’s life.
