“Pawn Stars”

The inaugural round of episodes of this long-running History Channel series about the daily activities of Richard “Old Man” Harrison, son Rick, grandson Corey and his childhood friend Austin “Chumlee” Russell at the World Famous Gold & Silver Pawn Shop of Las Vegas comes to the streaming service.

“Movie: Ali”

Will Smith was an Oscar nominee for his performance as the heavyweight champ — whose personal life has been as colorful as his style in the ring — in director Michael Mann’s (“Heat”) biographical 2001 drama. The film examines the former Cassius Clay’s relationships with righthand man Drew “Bundini” Brown (Jamie Foxx) and sportscaster Howard Cosell (a heavily made-up Jon Voight), and the controversies Ali stirred.

“The Dropout”

Amanda Seyfried (“Mank,” “Les Miserables”) is the dropout of the title in this limited series from Elizabeth Meriwether (“New Girl”), which casts her as Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes, whose vision for a revolutionary bloodtesting device brought her to the top of the business world before she was arrested and charged with defrauding investors. Naveen Andrews, William H. Macy, Laurie Metcalf and Utkarsh Ambudkar also star. (ORIGINAL)

Checking in with WENDY CREWSON

Wendy Crewson is happy that “Good Sam” has cast her as an atypical mom.

Though the Canadian actress is portraying the mother of Sophia Bush’s head-surgeon title character in the Wednesday CBS drama series, Crewson’s Vivian also is the medical chief of the hospital in question, and her charges also include her doctor ex-husband Griff (Jason Isaacs) ... whose frequent clashes with their daughter force Vivian to play mediator more often than she’d like.

The friendly Crewson says, “after I had finished ‘Saving Hope’ – a Canadian medical series that we did for five years, I said very distinctly to my lovely manager that I would not be doing another medical show. It was fun, but I’d done it, and it was just too hard to learn that dialogue. And then, the audition for this came up.”

That was three years ago, before “Good Sam” was delayed by the coronavirus pandemic ... and though Crewson turned it down at first, her manager urged her to look at it. “I said, ‘It’s going to have to be wildly different for me to want to do it,’ and he said, ‘You’re the chief medical officer, but it’s mostly going to be family stuff and not hospital stuff.’ And that’s exactly what it’s been, and I am so grateful.”

In fact, Crewson was grateful for “Good Sam” well before now, since knowing it was waiting for her helped her get though the early phases of the pandemic. “They held us for almost a year before we did the pilot,” she reflects, “then they picked us up. I feel like during a very difficult time, this show has persevered.”
