It’s springtime, the time when the world comes alive with color. Trees sprout pink and purple and fresh grasses and shrubs blanket the ground with various shades of green that remind me of my favorite piece of furniture. It was a celery-green velvet couch that sat in my childhood living room. It was buttery soft and many nights, I could be found snuggled up asleep on that couch, watching “Little House on the Prairie” with my family, cuddling with Mom or waiting for Santa. To this day, every time I sit on a couch made of velvet, I am brought back to the wonderful memories surrounding that couch. Home is more than just a place or a favorite piece of furniture; it’s the center of our family from the living room couch where you watch movies, the dining room table where you share holiday meals together, the creaky rocking chair where your mother rocked you to sleep, to the canopy bed and bubblegum pink walls in your childhood bedroom. Our homes have the ability to shape how we feel; they provide us with warmth and safety. Now, more than ever, as we have stayed home this last year in pandemic mode, our home has become even more important. Spending all that time in your home now, you may have realized your desk chair may look pretty but isn’t very comfortable, or you no longer like the robin’s egg blue walls you once did 10 years ago. Now that you’re cooking in your kitchen every night, you crave new colors on the walls, a funky new backsplash and new curtains. This is where interior designers come in. They can help you take your old space and give it new life, add more color, and help you find a new style all your own. This spring issue of Her magazine features everything home and design and centers on Lisa Pendry, owner of Fabric and Home Furnishings in Greenville, which has been in business since 2001. Lisa, her husband Dale and her team of designers are ready to help you select new paint, new fabric and furniture and help you update or redesign any room in your home. So no matter what design style fits you best, what piece of furniture or décor is your favorite, or whether you like wallpaper or shiplap, Design will help bring you home this spring. Happy decorating friends! Virtual hugs,

Photos by: Kris Fay ome is more than the items within a particular space. Home is a feeling. It’s the calm wave of your heartbeat when you melt into your living room sofa after a long day at work. It’s the relaxation you feel in your home office with the rich wooden desk, dark gray walls, and supple leather couch. It’s your formal dining room with the Oriental rug, chinoiserie drapery, and matching ceramic lamps. Or It’s the periwinkle walls, satin duvet and gauzy linen curtains in your childhood bedroom. Home really is where the heart is. It’s our safe space, our utopia. It’s where we create memories. Each room is special and should reflect our tastes, color choices and favorite décor items. It can be comfortable, cozy, refined, retro, classic, modern, country-French, and everything in between. Each piece of furniture, lamp, curtain, drapery, valance, or specialty design item tells our story, and every story has a narrator. One such creative narrator is Lisa Pendry. She is the owner, along with her husband, Dale, of Fabric and Home Furnishings in Greenville. The showroom in Arlington Village provides a quaint personal experience to turn your home into a showplace. The entire staff will assist you with your interior design needs and make sure your experience is fun and exciting. Lisa is educated, friendly,

funny and super easy to talk to. You walk in and you immediately feel at home and comfortable. The store’s showroom is inviting, with waterfalls of colored fabrics from classic florals, neutral basket weaves, rich and elegant textured brocades, and beautiful chinoiserie styles including traditional Chinese scenes, animals, and pagodas. Fabrics start your design story, and then you move on to curtains, valances, and throw pillows. The colors and shapes and styles are a wonderful decorating journey for you to experience, and Lisa can help bring your design vision to life along with her amazing design team including Ben, Matthew, Meghan, and Delaney. The design world is similar to the hospitality field with crazy hours and lots of moving parts. A typical day is anything but ordinary. “My typical day is never typical,” Lisa says. “I usually get to the store by 8 a.m.. Our store hours are 10 to 5:30, but I can spend those early hours being creative and adding finishing touches to a home I am working on, or to merchandise the store.” The design team starts to arrive at 9:30 a.m. to focus on its daily goals. Fabric and Home Furnishings is a fabric store, a furniture store, an accessory store, and it manages re-upholstery, custom drapery, and a rug gallery as well as offering blinds,

shades and shutters. “Every day is unique and exciting,” Lisa says. “We laugh and keep moving through days of chaos sometimes. Ben actually gave me a name plate for Christmas that says ‘chaos coordinator,’ so that must be my title.” It’s safe to see why Fabric and Home Furnishings has been open for so long and is a central design hub for residential to commercial customers. The design journey for Lisa and Dale started back in 2001 when they moved to Greenville from High Point to open their business. They wanted to bring their combined 53 years of textiles and furniture experience to eastern North Carolina. Their first store was on Moseley Drive, and it offered fabric and drapery services. They quickly decided Greenville needed a complete interior design center and opened a furniture and fabric store combination. “The decision to offer in-home design services was a wonderful solution to everyone’s custom furniture and drapery needs,” Lisa says. Lisa has an extensive portfolio with experience in complete interior design solutions for commercial and residential clients. Fabric selections, furniture design, custom bedding, lighting, and accessories are all a part of the services she offers. She attended American Business and Fashion Institute in Charlotte and has always had a passion for interior design. “When I was little, even my Barbie ‘dream home’ had to be redecorated,” she says, laughing. “My husband Dale has spent his life in the fabric business. When we put our talents together, we realized our concept of fabric and home furnishings with complete design services was a wonderful idea”. They closed their Fire Tower Road store in 2008 and decided to open the Arlington Village showroom. They moved to Charlotte to be closer to family when their son started middle school and opened a store in Denver, to help with all of the growth around Lake Norman. “Dale did most of the commuting between stores (because he is actually the brains of our business). When our son graduated in 2017 and decided to return to his purple and gold roots, we moved back,” Lisa says. Now more than ever, people are wanting to re-do and refresh their home décor as they have been living, working and using their home more during the last year of stay at home and pandemic lifestyles. Fabric and Home Furnishing offers in-home design services so Lisa, Dale and the team can help you transform you space post-pandemic with a fresh outlook to go into 2021. “I decided to offer in-home design service when we opened Fabric and Sofas in Winterville in 2003,” Lisa says. “In college, I was sure I wanted to buy a ‘decorating den’ franchise to be able to take the design choices into the customer’s home. My goal was to simplify the design process and take away the overwhelming feeling customers have when they walk into a store full of options. When we get invited into their homes, we can get to know how they live, and what their goals are. Plus I love to see how they enjoy their homes so I can find the best solutions for them.” When not working 100 miles an hour, you can find Lisa and Dale relaxing in their comfortably designed home. For Lisa and Dale, their personal design style exudes comfort. “My home is comfortable!,” Lisa says. “By the time I finally sit down at the end of the day – comfort matters the most! So my home says ‘welcome home.’
www.reflector.com/her
“Sometimes the word ‘home’ has several meanings,” she says. “Home was always Charlotte/Lake Norman for me, but when we came back to eastern North Carolina, I realized home is actually where your passion lives. It’s making friends and seeing their joy when the transformation is compete and they realize their home really is their sanctuary.” Even though there are hundreds of fabrics to choose from, Lisa’s favorite pattern or style is an elegant chinoiserie. Her home includes a beautiful crypton sectional with dramatic pillows and very colorful Thibaut Chinoiserie drapery. “I love to mix patterns to make each home unique,” she says. “In the phase of less is more and white linen drapery, I can still add the right pizzazz with pillows and help people realize how to combine patterns to become art.” For Lisa, the most important element in any design project is the fabric, because “fabric is the glue that pulls the entire room together!” If Lisa had to turn the word fabric into an acronym to describe what elements design encompasses to her design style, her letters would spell out: F – FABULOUS A – ARTISTIC B – BOLD R – REJUVANATING I – INTERESTING C – COMPLETE Even with all the elements in place and a successful design journey, the job can still be hard and the pandemic does not make it any easier. “The hardest part of my job is the lack of control on production. When fabric is on order, furniture is on order, and my vision is complete, but I am at the mercy of over 12 vendors to pull a home together,” she says. “I try to employee local craftsman and manufacturers so we can deliver faster than most stores. The best part is a happy and excited customer that will forever be a friend.” Design will continue to evolve and change in the coming years and Lisa and Dale can keep you updated on new trends and fabrics. They update their Facebook page daily to keep you engaged and educating on new decorating trends. “For 2021 we are bringing wallpaper back and sending shiplap out the door,” Lisa says. “White, gray, and soft blues are still a hot base for a creative room. Bold drama will never go out of style, but making sure each client’s home is a reflection of their personality and lifestyle is number one in my designs.” If you are ready to add to your home story and re-do, refresh, or change your home style and décor, spring is the perfect time to do it and Lisa and her team can help. The design service comes with a one-time fee. “We don’t charge by the hour and we pour our hearts into your home, one room at a time,” Lisa says. “I am so excited to announce that every employee on my sales floor is a designer. I have four big personalities, with four design styles that are all amazing. We work as a team and make sure your home is everything you ever dreamed!” Fabric and Home Furnishings is located at 646 E. Arlington Blvd. Business hours are 10 a.m. -5:30 p.m. Monday-Friday and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday. an you actually believe it is April? Already? Me neither! Well, time is ticking and it consistently reminds me that whatever you and I are planning to do or even go after, we do not need to play around and wait; we need to do it now! In 2015, I wrote and published a book titled “How to D.E.S.I.G.N. Your Life When Your Hands Are Full.” This was a major accomplishment for me because I had always dreamed of writing a book and getting it published and so I did! (My husband is encouraging me to “re-release it” because he says that there is so much wisdom in those pages that I need to dust it off and put it back out there in the market in a fresh way. Maybe I will soon.) You know, I am not much of a designer or decorator at all; that is not my strength. In fact, when I had a redesign project

for my home office, I had to call in one of my good friends who is fabulous at designing any kind of space in a home. Kimberly Lucas was truly a life saver during those moments when I was about to pull my hair out behind trying to arrange a bookshelf to make it look like I am sitting in a senior executive’s office. She came to my rescue! Now, although I may not be good at designing or decorating a house, I have come to gather some secrets that I want to share with you to help you D.E.S.I.G.N. your life particularly when your hands are full. As women, our jobs are never done. Although we are senior executives, writers, speakers, waitresses, CEOs, doctors, lawyers, nurses, physical therapists, counselors and so much more in our careers, many of us are also wives, mothers, daughters, sisters, friends, teachers, guidance counselors for our family, ministers, caregivers, and so many other roles. We have our

hands completely full! But here is the deal, no matter how full your hands are, you have to make sure that you are positioning yourself to go after your personal dreams passionately. You have to carve out time to nurture what you see in your heart and position yourself for success. Let me give you a few nuggets from my book that I believe will help you to go into this next phase of your life full of passion and postured to prioritize what is important to you. It is time for you to make some adjustments and decorate your life with things that will make you fulfilled as you live on purpose.
Nugget 1: Decide what you really want.
Too many times, I have had conversations with women who are simply settling for what everybody else wants them to have instead of cultivating what is truly in their hearts. I have seen it time and time again where a woman will just take whatever comes instead of creating what she wants in her life. You have to spend some time and commune with your heart and make a decision about what you really want in your life.
Nugget 2: Eliminate Excuses
Someone once made a statement, “Excuses are like armpits: We all have them and they all stink!” Excuses will hold you back from the life you really want. You have to stop making excuses and start making bold moves. Enough with allowing what you do not have to stop you from going after what you want to have. Remove those barriers called excuses so you are free to create the life you really want.
Nugget 3: Set your course for action
In other words, set yourself up for success. You have to take charge of your environment and set yourself up to win. It is time not to just be on the sidelines of life. You have to get in the game and make some waves. You have too much in you to simply settle. You are too gifted, you have too much invested. I encourage you to set your course
for action. When you are in motion, you are in action, and where there is action, there will be traction. Go for it!
Nugget 4: Implement you plan
Listen, it is not enough to set a plan; you have to work your plan. You have to make sure that you have the right strategy a n d resources to design the life you desire to live. You were made for more, and you need to implement your plan.
Nugget 5: Get past it
Listen to me, life has trouble built into it. I know this is going to sound kind of harsh, and I really do not mean for it to, but you have to get past it. You cannot live your life stuck in the trenches of the past. You are better than that! You are more than what has happened to you. I know you have experienced some really bad stuff, and I have, too. (I will have to share that at another time.) But here is what I am sure of: You can get past it! You can move forward, and you can have a life that is better than what you may be experiencing right now.
Nugget 6: Negotiate to win
In life, there are tradeoffs. You take the good with the bad. You take the bitter with the sweet. Life will not always hand you a dozen roses free of thorns, but you have to learn how to take those flowers and cut the thorns off. You have to win with the hand that you have been dealt. You have to have the mindset that there is always a way. You will have to negotiate to win. You may not always get exactly what you want but if you get 80% of 100, then you really are doing really well. Listen, I want to simply encourage you today to survey your life. Your hands may be full, but you can certainly D.E.S.I.G.N. your life when your hands are full. I hope our time together has been helpful. Until next time, know that I am cheering for you and I am here to help you win.

IMPROVE YOUR INDOOR AIR QUALITY
WITH NASA DEVELOPED ACTIVEPURE TECHNOLOGY BY ALLEN WARREN Over the past 13 months our lives have changed, there is no doubt about it. People are working from home now and we are learning a new lifestyle. Let’s turn lemons into lemonade. There is a little known about technology available to enhance your living environment called ActivePure. This technology was developed by NASA decades ago so vegetables could be grown on the space station without the interference of mold growth. As a result, it was realized that this method could be made available to the public after we understood all that ActivePure has to offer. There are a lot of toxins, allergens and dust particles that make their way into your home every day. ActivePure Technology is the most powerful surface and air purification ever discovered that is safe for use in spaces occupied by people and pets. ActivePure provides continuous

surface decontamination and air purification in real time. Over a decade of testing, patented ActivePure Technology has been proven to eliminate over 99.9% of many common airborne and surface contaminants including viruses, bacteria, mold, fungi, VOCs, smoke, allergens, and odors. The proprietary ActivePure Technology uses UVC light waves and a catalytic process to produce super oxide molecules and hydro-peroxides that destroy contaminants on surfaces and in the air. This technology creates powerful oxidizers, known as ActivePure Molecules, that are then released back into the room, where they seek and destroy DNA and RNA viruses including SARS-CoV-2 (novel corona-virus), Swine Flu (H1N1), Avian Bird Flu (H5N8), Hepatitis A (HAV) and MS2 bacteriophage, regardless of their size, on surfaces and in the air.

HEALTH
BY METRO CREATIVE A good night's sleep is vital to a person's overall health. According to the United States Department of Health and Human Services, people who get enough sleep get sick less often, are more able to maintain a healthy weight and are at lower risk for serious health problems, including heart disease and diabetes. But many adults are not getting enough quality sleep, and one group in particular may be especially likely to have sleep problems. A 2006 study published in the journal Current Opinion in Pulmonary Medicine found that women have more sleep-related complaints than men. The study suggested gender differences, including menstrual cycles, pregnancy and menopause, may underlie the observed differences in risk of sleep disorders. Women cannot control the biological factors that may make them more vulnerable to sleep issues. However, they are not helpless when it comes to their efforts to get adequate rest.
Create a better sleep environment. The National Sleep Foundation notes that the optimal bedroom temperature is between 60 and 67 degrees Fahrenheit. Maintaining a cool sleeping environment is even more important for women than men due to the increases in core body temperature during menstruation. A cool environment is more conducive to better sleep and can help women stay cool even when their body temperatures rise due to menstruation.
time, the body will readjust and grow accustomed to going to bed at this time, increasing the likelihood of falling asleep. Stick to this routine throughout the week, including on weekends.
Bathe before bedtime. A warm bath or shower prior to bedtime can lead to a decrease in body temperature, which the NSF notes can spark feelings of sleepiness. This can help with sleep onset when coupled with a cool bedroom temperature.
Avoid certains substances close to bedtime. The NSF advises against consuming caffeine, alcohol and nicotine close to bedtime. Each of these substances can compromise a woman's ability to fall asleep or stay asleep. For example, the Cleveland Clinic notes that while alcohol before bed may help people feel sleepy, that sedative effect wears off as the alcohol begins to metabolize. That process prevents the body from entering the stages of deep sleep, leading to more frequent sleep interruptions throughout the night.
Establish a bedtime routine. The DHHS notes that establishing and sticking to a bedtime routine, including going to bed at the same time each night, can help women overcome their sleep issues. Over
Women who are having trouble sleeping can try various strategies to overcome their issues. Women with chronic sleeping problems can consult their physicians about additional ways to get better, more consistent sleep.

I
RECIPE
sat and leafed through a stack of old family recipes, wondering why I was keeping them. They were taking up valuable shelf space in our small home. The answer is memories. Each one brought back a memory of earlier years and time spent with family and friends. Each recipe represented holidays, celebrations, learning to cook with mom or meals made to comfort those going through a tough time. Why don’t these meals make it to the table anymore? Glancing at the list of ingredients was a reminder. Many of them were made with high-fat meats, low-fiber white flour and a great deal of butter or sour cream. This meant high saturated fat or sodium and, of course, sugar. These were not the healthiest choices. I decided to try the recipes and substitute some healthier ingredients. I was surprised by some of the ways classic recipes can be updated using ingredients I already had on hand. Here are some healthier substitutions: • Instead of heavy cream, use evaporated skim milk. • Instead of sour cream, use fat free sour cream or plain yogurt (or plain Greek yogurt). (Try this tip in the tasty Greek Yogurt Chicken Salad recipe below.) • Instead of butter, use margarine or vegetable oil. • Instead of ground beef, use lean ground turkey or chicken. • Instead of all-purpose flour, try whole-wheat flour. • Replace some or all of the salt with herbs and spices. • When baking, use applesauce instead of oil. Or, use half the oil and replace with half the amount of applesauce to reduce fat content. This will decrease fat and calories without losing flavor or texture. • Instead of whole eggs, use two egg whites to replace each egg in a recipe. • Use brown rice or cauliflower rice instead of white rice for more texture and fiber. Spiralized veggies make a great pasta replacement. • Try a suitable sugar substitute to replace some or all of the sugar in a recipe. • Use reduced-fat cheese instead of regular cheese to cut fat and calories. I was surprised at how little some of these substitutions changed the flavor of the original recipes. Other times, they added a new twist to an old favorite. Either way, with some creativity, you can keep many of the old classics and enjoy them in a healthier way. And, you may even be passing on some new and improved recipes (and memories) to future chefs within your family, circle of friends or children who are learning to cook. Bon Appetit!

“My bed. My parents actually picked it up at a flea market back in the 80’s, gave it a little love, refinished it and then passed it down to me. I love the cannonball headboard and foot-board, plus the sentimental value is just an added plus.” - Crystal Hildenbrand, Age 48

“My glider rocker . . .because we purchased it when my son was born. There are so many memories of feeding him and rocking him to sleep. Now, 26 years later, it still brings me comfort and I often find myself gently rocking in it when I am contemplating things.”
“My favorite piece of furniture is a red mosaic table that I purchased several years ago. It is so colorful. It brightens my day whenever I enter the room.”

WASHINGTON BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT
AFTER THE WINE
DECOR
HOW WOULD YOU CAPTURE A MEMORY OF YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH LOVED ONES FROM AN ANNIVERSARY, BIRTHDAY OR FIRST DATE WHERE YOU SHARED A CELEBRATORY BOTTLE OF WINE? Leilani Nichols and her husband, David, started After The Wine Decor out of their passion for wine, adventures, great memories with friends and family, and the love they have for God and each other. After celebrating their oneyear anniversary in 2017 with a bottle of their favorite wine, Roma, they admired the beauty of the bottle and thought, “There's got to be something we can do with this bottle besides throw it away and something more than just recycle it. We pondered our evening and the memories we created. Having a love of architecture, travel and history, we thought, ‘What if we created something timeless and beautiful that reflected how God lit a path that brought us back together after 25 years and thought of that light within our hearts?’ We then realized we needed to create a lamp out of this fabulous bottle of wine to help remind us of our evening and the memories we created. What most people throw in the trash, we wanted to re-purpose into something beautiful.” For Leilani, the lighting in a home creates a mood for any experience, an ambiance that makes you feel something, and it sets a tone. They want their wine bottle lamps to create a conversation that lights both your heart and home. Leilani’s love of design and art, along with her husband's engineering and fabrication expertise, came together beautifully to create one-of-a-kind nightlights, fully functional lamps made from re-purposed wine bottles and liquor bottles, wall art and home decor items made from recycled wine corks. These items make wonderful gifts, decor for parties and weddings and add a unique touch to any home. After The Wine Decor also creates custom wine or liquor bottle lamps out of your favorite bottle. Just imagine the story you can share with your friends and family and the history that you can pass down for generations to come, the memories never forgotten through a simple bottle of wine. After The Wine Decor is located inside Crystal Coast Hand Crafted, at 230 W. Main St., Washington, N.C. For more information, call 945-1097.
