Dear Readers,

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) estimates that 1,469,000 adults in North Carolina suffer from a mental health condition. More than half of Americans reported that COVID-19 has had a negative impact on their mental health. And one in five adults in the United States live with a mental health condition. Many of us, myself included at one time or another have suffered from anxiety, depression, and other mental health conditions. In 2014 after the death of my parents, I suffered from anxiety and depression and had to seek treatment. I am so glad that I did. Not only did I take medication to manage my symptoms, I attended therapy in order to understand my feelings and manage the wide range of emotions that can be part of mental illness. More than anything, I am happy to know that I am not alone in my struggle. There are dozens of people we come in contact with on a daily basis who are suffering as well and we must show compassion as often as we can, because you really never know what someone is going through at any given time. May is mental health awareness month and it is important that we continue to shed light on the amazing organizations in our community that are assisting those in need. We all need to help people find and maintain happiness by being supportive. And happiness, as corny as this may sound, starts with a smile. So for our cover models, you will meet Dr. Britt Causey and Dr. Meredith Davis, both pediatrics dentists in Pitt County. A dentist knows the real investment of a healthy smile, which affects overall physical health and can greatly increase confidence. Happiness and smiling go hand-in-hand with mental health and increased happiness has been known to improve mood, reduce stress, increase mental clarity, and can keep you healthy longer. No matter what mental health issues you may have already faced or will face in the future, may you find support and happiness every step of the way.

hink of this vast world we live in and the many different cultures, yet we all share one common expression. Smiling is not only a universal means of communicating, it’s also a frequent way. Ron Gutman, founder and former CEO of HealthTap has stated that more than 30% of adults smile over 20 times a day. Those with the greatest superpowers are actually children, who smile as much as 400 times per day! That makes them superheroes to pediatric dentists. A dentist knows the real investment of a healthy smile, which affects overall physical health and can greatly increase confidence. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that tooth decay is the most common chronic condition of childhood, so it’s important to edu4

cate families about the importance of oral care and timely check-ups. Greenville is home to ECU School of Dental Medicine and experienced dental professionals, many of them women, who help children and families have the best possible dental care. Two such female dentists that call Greenville home are Dr. Britt Causey and Dr. Meredith Perdue Davis, both pediatric dentists at Eastern Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry located at 1025 Johns Hopkins Drive. Causey, a specialist in pediatric dentistry, is originally from Ahoskie. She earned a bachelor of science in biology from Peace College in Raleigh. After receiving her doctorate of dental surgery from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2005, Causey worked in private practice and public health for nine years as a general dentist before specializing

in pediatric dentistry. Davis, also a specialist in pediatric dentistry, is a native of Greenville. She attended The Oakwood School and J.H. Rose High school before completing her undergraduate education at the University of Virginia. Davis received her DDS degree from the University of North Carolina. Afterward, she completed a three-year residency program in pediatric dentistry at UNC. A choice to go into pediatric dentistry was born during Causey’s time working as a general dentist. “My pediatric patients made dentistry fun and rewarding,” she said. “I enjoyed converting a nervous, hesitant patient into one that was excited about coming to dental appointments. I was able to complete a two-year postdoctoral pediatric dentistry residency at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, which allowed me to gain additional training in pediatric dental care.” For Davis, the passion for pediatric dentistry began during her time in dental school, but she has always had a heart for patient care. “Growing up, I always knew I wanted to be in health care,” she said. “My parents are health care professionals, and I witnessed firsthand the fulfillment they both experienced in their work. I did not realize that dentistry was where I was headed until my fourth year of college, when I started to explore it as a career by shadowing in a local office. I loved how dentistry combines the skills of critical thinking, fine motor skills, and artistic creativity.” The staff at Eastern Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry believes a lifetime of dental health and beautiful smiles begins in infancy with pediatric dental care, and later, with orthodontics and adolescent dental care. Team members pride themselves in creating a positive, pleasant experience for each patient in an office environment that is comfortable, attractive, and clean. Upon entering, families are welcomed by friendly staff and a colorful, fun environment that helps put children at ease. The providers at EOPD are proud of the relationship that this practice has established with the community over many decades and seek to maintain it through providing quality, compassionate and patient-centered care. They also understand that preventing dental disease is paramount to a positive health trajectory, and emphasize oral health education at every appointment. They strive to care for each patient as they would members of their own families and are dedicated to the cause of improving children’s oral health throughout eastern North Carolina. Both Causey and Davis work with a team of five May 2022

additional dentists, Dr. Jasper L. Lewis, Jr., Dr. Joseph Gondrez, Dr. W. Lee Lewis, Dr. Derek Steele, and Dr. Jorge Arriagada, in addition to a business, pediatric, and orthodontic staff that assists patients from toddlers to teenagers from their first teeth emerging, to braces and beyond. The job of a pediatric dentist has many fun aspects for Causey, as she strives to help children overcome any fears they may have about dental care. “My goal is for them to be excited about coming to their dental appointments,” she said. “I enjoy interacting with my pediatric patients and asking them simple questions to get to know them better and to help them feel comfortable. I enjoy explaining dental procedures to them in simple ways that they can understand. If my patients understand what we are doing and why, it helps to eliminate their fears.” Davis shares that the children and their families she cares for bring her the greatest joy. “When you work with kids in dentistry, you have to be prepared for anything; it’s challenging but always fun and entertaining!” she said. “Another highlight is the fantastic team at Eastern Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry who encourage and keep me laughing every day. I can’t imagine a better group of people to work with.” After a long day examining, cleaning, and helping build better smiles in Greenville, Causey can be found spending time at Grace Church, where she is a member. Her Christian faith is very important to her, and helps her center her life and work. “I am busy taking care of my family, my husband and two daughters. I am often found changing diapers on my 3-month-old baby girl, playing ‘Catch Me’ with my 2-year-old daughter (her favorite game), and cooking my husband’s favorite meals,” she said. “I love being a wife and mother, and I am thankful I can be a pediatric dentist too! I also enjoy reading, knitting and visiting the beach.” Davis also values the time spent with her husband and son. “We have enjoyed exploring all that Greenville has to offer—we especially like trying new restaurants and meeting friends at some of the fun local spots,” she said. “I very much enjoy being outside and working in our yard. My latest project has been establishing and maintaining a rose garden at our new home. It’s been a fun learning experience.”. As they nurture their own families, these women are also helping grow strong smiles in our children and building beautiful tomorrows for future leaders, even superheroes. prah Winfrey once said, “You can never be happy living someone else’s dream. Live your own. And you will for sure know the meaning of happiness.” Happiness is an inside job. How we feel about ourselves establishes our level of contentment. Often, good food can cause feelings of bliss. Comfort food has the ability to leave a smile on your face and your tummy full. Eating a varied diet is often suggested by healthcare providers and is helpful for many reasons. Eating balanced meals can lead to consumption of more Vitamin D rich foods. Vitamin D is also known as the happiness vitamin. We can attribute bone health, strong immune systems and muscle growth as benefits of Vitamin D. In addition, research has shown Vitamin D may play an important role in decreasing the risk of depression.1 Recommended daily levels of Vitamin D within the body can make severe flu and COVID-19 infections less likely. While the rays of the sun can provide this protective vitamin, food can as well! Vitamin D can be

found in specific foods such as salmon, tuna fish, fortified orange juice, egg yolk and fortified cereals. Daily, consistent consumption of these foods will increase the likelihood of reaching recommended daily Vitamin D levels. Your local WIC (Women, Infants and Children) office provides food packages that are rich in Vitamin D for qualified community members. Also, check with your healthcare provider to determine other ways that you can increase Vitamin D intake. Enjoy the benefits of Vitamin D in this flavorful Tuna Salad this Spring.

therapy TMS has been an FDA approved treatment for Major Depression since 2008. TMS has many advantages over ECT, psychotherapy/counseling and medication therapy including: • No systemic side-effects • People are more compliant with TMS treatments • No anesthesia • Noninvasive • No drug interactions • Higher rates of remission TMS causes a change in neurotransmission when applied to the Dorso Lateral Prefrontal Cortex (right side of the head roughly 1-2 inches above temple region). Treatments work best if received five days a week for 26-30 sessions. The treatment session is only 20-30 minutes/day. People who experience TMS treatments typically have little or no side-effects and can carry on with their day, including returning to work. Most people start to show improvements around treatments 11 through 15. Through TMS treatment, people feel a lift in their mood as symptoms gradually start to decline over time, leading to an improved quality of life. While TMS is not a permanent cure for depression, most patients can expect to feel significant relief for up to 12 months. A lot of people experience some benefit within the first two weeks, but some people do not experience results until weeks four to six. Over the course of the treatment sessions, most people will feel a lift in their mood as symptoms begin to decline and, in some cases, disappear completely. Nearly 75% of TMS recipients report that their quality of life is greatly improved because of the treatment. TMS has many other uses that have not been approved by the FDA to date. ore than 5,000 women come together every day, across 22 states, sharing workouts, friendship, and so much more. Greenville is home to one of the national FiA groups. FiA ENC Greenville was first started at Alice Keene Park on July 9, 2016, with some 60 ladies in attendance. We are still going strong almost six years later with six workouts a week being held at local Greenville parks. Mission: FiA stands for Females in Action, which is a community of women dedicated to making each other stronger in all areas of our lives through activities that include bodies, minds, and hearts. A FiA workout is a promise, always free, open to all women, held outdoors, and ends with a circle of trust. · Bodies—We organize free, peer-led workouts each week. Workouts are held outdoors rain or shine, hot or cold. · Minds—We get together for book clubs, career and family discussion groups, or workshops. · Hearts—We give our time and resources to the community and invest in each other by joining together for coffee, weekday lunches, and FiA socials. FiA is for women only, including persons identifying as a woman. FiA workouts are open to women of all ages and fitness levels. FiA workouts are open to women of all religions and beliefs. We accept all faiths. This might be faith in God, a concept, the universe or the good of humanity. Generally, a belief in something larger and outside of ourselves. At a FiA workout, everyone is welcome and accepted. FiA workouts are always free. No catches. FiA workouts are outside, rain or shine. We do not cancel workouts unless conditions are absolutely unsafe because being together outdoors connects us with nature and each other. “Unsafe” means lightning, tornadoes, icy roads, flash floods in the park, etc. When participants are attired appropriately, hard rain, painfully cold weather, and snow are all perfectly safe and are just another way to make us stronger. Workouts might be modified to adjust to the conditions, such as seeking covered areas or

parking garages, or sticking to in-place moves like burpees. No one is left behind. There is always someone watching the back so no one is lost or feels alone/ discouraged/unsure. A scheduled FiA workout is a promise. A scheduled workout starts and ends on time and will have someone there every time. If a workout is canceled because of unsafe weather, a convergence, or a major holiday, it will be announced on the regional social media platform(s). A FiA workout ends with a Circle of Trust and Name-O-Rama. We acknowledge each individual after every workout. If you’re new, you’ll receive a nickname right then and there. We take a moment to pause in reflection or contemplation often with a motivating quote or story before going into the world. Crystal Hildenbrand took over as the Regional Leader of FiA ENC Greenville in February 2020. In 2008, Dr. Molini moved to North Carolina where she served as a dentist at a Federally Qualified Health Center that provides medical and dental care for thousands of people in Wilson, Nash, and Edgecombe Counties. While she enjoyed serving there for seven years, she longed for the opportunity to provide more personal, dedicated care to patients. With that, she established Ayden Family Dentistry in 2015 and is committed to providing complete health dentistry to residents of Pitt County and surrounding areas. “With complete health dentistry in mind, we must educate the patient on how the mouth relates to the body. It is tailored to each patient based on their medical history, oral health, and daily habits,” shared Dr. Molini. This approach allows the patient to understand that oral disease has just as much effect on their health as other communicable and autoimmune diseases. “Educating patients on this vital information gives them to the opportunity to work with their medical providers to improve their current quality of life and if possible, extend their longevity,” she added. “It is my hope that everyone in North Carolina and in the entire world enjoys their best life now and, in the future as well.” In order to make sure the health of her patients is cared for, her team works closely with other healthcare specialties such as ear nose throat (ENT), sleep medicine, diabetology, and primary care. Their goal is to help patients and their healthcare providers articulate the best possible options of care. With this relationship brought to the forefront, complete health dentistry has the potential to revolutionize the medical industry and dentistry. May 2022

ADVICE

“TAKE TIME TO C.A.R.E.”

H

BY CHRISTY JONES

ello my dear friend, happy May! As you know, the focus for this month’s issue is mental health. This topic is one that is probably one of the dearest to my heart because I have been privileged to be professionally trained as a marriage and family therapist. I fell in love with the field of mental health because I believe that it is an important part of each of our lives that deserves the utmost attention and respect. I want to share a personal story with you that I hope will encourage you as you reflect upon and think about your own mental health and what it means for you to take care of yourself. When I was about 21, I experienced a very traumatic mental health challenge that caused me to have to take an extended break from a lot of projects and even people so that I could focus on getting myself together. I was involved in several work projects, community outreach initiatives as well as relation-

18

ships that I was building. I was stretched completely thin, but, at that time, I did not notice myself breaking inwardly. I was struggling to set boundaries because I was used to just accepting whatever came my way and handling it no matter what. I was not resting properly. I was not eating nutritiously. I did not have time to exercise. All I was doing was working. I was burning the candle at both ends, as they say, until one day the candle was almost burned out. I remember being the leader of a particular project, and it was time for me to execute, I had done absolutely nothing on that project for months. I stood in the front of the person I was reporting to and just started crying uncontrollably. My thoughts were racing, my heart was pounding furiously, and I could not utter any words. I was not myself. It took my leader by surprise because she had never seen me fall apart like this, but I was under so much pressure that I just simply could not handle one other thing! I collapsed to the floor and held my face in my hands and sobbed until my eyes felt heavier than bricks. I could not get myself together. She looked at me, picked me up in her arms and held me as I tried to collect myself. She said to me, “Christy, you need to take a break. You have to go take care of yourself.” Under the collaboration plan with my therapist, about a week after that experience, I reached out to my sister who was living in Texas and asked her if I could come and stay with her for a while because I needed to get myself together. She purchased a plane ticket for me, and I left the state of North Carolina for close to two months. I disconnected totally from everything and everyone and I spent time “refilling my cup.” That was a pivotal moment in my life and since that moment (20 plus years ago), I have made it my priority to take care of myself, especially my mental health. During that time, I did not have a self-care plan. I did not even consider my energy level or even the power of nourishing my mind and taking care of my emotions. I did not think that that was even necessary or important. Because I am a “people-pourer” (a term I made up), at that time, I just thought that it was my responsibility to help everyone and do all within my power to empower others. Now, that is still very relevant to who I am as a person, a wife, a mom, a daughter, a sister, a friend, a coach, and a leadership development strategist. The difference is I have learned this one vital lesson: I cannot pour from an empty cup! In order for me to have some-

thing to give to others and pour into others, I am responsible for engaging in activities that help me to stay full and fill my personal cup! I want to encourage you, my sister-friend, take time to C.A.R.E. Count your blessings daily — Start each day with gratitude. Think about the good things and the good people that you are fortunate enough to have access to in your life. Meditate on things that are good, pure, lovely and of good report! Think about how blessed your life really is because there are people whose life circumstances may not be as good as yours! Assess and adjust often — It is important to understand where you are in your life and what stage, season, or state of life you may be in. What worked when you were 20 may not prove to be the best strategy for you now that you are 40. Life is all about adjustments. When I was 25, there were things I did to “fill my cup” that will not work for me now. I constantly assess and adjust. I ask myself: “At this stage of my life, what do I need?” Consider asking yourself the same question. Recharge and rest often — One of the things I learned from the experience that I shared with you is to plan recharge and rest time along the way! The mistake I made was to keep going and going and going until I was no longer able to go! My “get up and go had got up and gone.” (This is something my father used to say.) It was and still

C

A R

is imperative for me to take recharging and resting “pit stops” along the way of my journey to give myself a moment and not just wait until a big moment to stop and recharge! Empty your environment — It is so easy to get overwhelmed, and life gets cluttered. So much can be happening all at one time. For me, it is imperative to do brain dumps often, to journal and capture thoughts, to declutter my space often, to abstain from things that could cause my body not to function optimally, to unplug from the phone and computer so that I can be present with my family and to just be quiet and think. My environment is critical to my ability to maintain my mental health. My friend, I hope that this month you will take time to assess where you are and if you need help to reorder your life so that your mental health is functioning at its optimal level, I encourage you to get the help you need! Know that you are cared for and the team here with the HER Magazine are supporting you and rooting for you each day. Until next time, take time to C.A.R.E.!

Psychotherapy Incorporating Horses OR MY CO-THERAPIST HAS 4 LEGS

A

BY MALAIKA KING ALBRECHT

re you are interested in a rewarding, research-driven approach to healing and personal growth that is not your usual in office or Zoom therapy session? If so, you may be a candidate for counseling incorporating horses. Due to the rewarding benefits, the popularity of incorporating horses into therapy is steadily increasing. Over the past year, Google has seen record numbers of people searching for “equine therapy near me.” Those of us who have pets or have spent time around animals understand the feel-good effect animals can have, but beyond that good feeling, horses are exceptionally well suited for therapeutic work with people. Horses are non-judgmental, sensitive to non-verbal communication, and are social animals just like we are. In addition, horses react to subtle changes in their environment. Locally, Dr. Cheryl Meola has a private practice in Greenville that offers equine assisted services, such as counseling incorporating horses and wellness coaching for stress reduction. After the past year, it is no surprise that she has had a waiting list. To off services at reduced costs for those in need and for veterans and first responders with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) for free, she and I co-founded Horses and HEALTH Inc. Both of us are certified therapeutic riding instructors and equine specialists in mental health and learning with the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International (PATH International). Horses and HEALTH’s purpose is to promote healing

through experiential activities with horses. “Our mission is to empower individuals with a broad range of personal well-being goals by providing the highest quality equine-assisted activities and therapies in an inclusive and welcoming environment,” Meola said. The history of equine-assisted services goes back to Ancient Greece where horseback riding was used to treat physical and mental health issues, and modern psychotherapists again pursued therapy involving horses in the mid-1900s. Now rather than viewing the horse as a tool, we regard the horses as colleagues and partners in the therapeutic process. Clients may learn horsemanship skills on the ground and work on connection with their chosen horse. Some clients may also practice rhythmic riding, as well. We believe that every interaction between the horse and human, whether on the ground or mounted, has a therapeutic purpose. HEALTH stands for Healing Equals Active Learning Through Horses, and the work/play we do with our horses is relationship-based. The benefits of being outside are well-documented and innumerable, and standing in a pasture with horses is often relaxing. In this natural environment, the goal of all our activities is a connected, attuned relationship with your horse partner, which can in turn help deepen your relationships with others and yourself and strengthen well-being. If this sounds like something you would like to experience, we would be happy to introduce you to our herd, which includes five full-sized horses, two miniature horses, and a mini donkey. The first visit to the farm will likely involve meeting the herd members and choosing May 2022

one to work with. This important choice is ideal when the person and the horse choose each other, and yes, horses have opinions and preferences just like we do. “Horses have different personalities, just like people. Some are friendly and seemingly easier to connect with, but the connection may not be as close and deep as the ones we must be more patient with,” one participant said. “Maybe those horses/people don’t trust as easily because of past trauma. Maybe it takes more time to connect, but they are worth the wait. Something had shifted in me this session. I felt different from the beginning. I had more confidence. The fear was gone. I knew how to keep myself safe. I knew Louie would not hurt me intentionally. I was learning how to keep us both safe, but I still had help. I felt the connection.” If you are interested in supporting our mission and donating to Horses and Health, please contact us at horsesandhealthnc@gmail.com. The Balot’s now own multiple businesses in Greenville, which have added 500+ jobs to the region in the last 12 months alone- a figure which is among their greatest rewards from the experience.
