OPENING PLENARY SILVANA RICHARDSON
Title: Collaborative Approaches for Learning and Innovating Together Time: 10.00 - 11.00 Biodata Silvana Richardson, ISPJVG graduate, is Head of Education at Bell UK, Academic Director of Bell Teacher Academic Director at Bell Teacher Academy, Cambridge, and Strategic Education Adviser at The Bell Foundation. She has co-written Cambridge papers in ELT and is author of a forthcoming book on Professional Development for CUP. Abstract According to the best available evidence, teacher learning activities that involve structured and evidence-rich collaboration with peers are a strong component of effective continuing professional development programmes. The safe and supportive environment they offer makes it possible to have professional learning conversations that lead to incremental development, as innovative strategies are implemented, refined and embedded. This talk will explore different approaches to structured collaboration that lead to context relevant, transferable and impactful professional learning.

CLOSING PLENARY CRISTINA BANFI
Title: 50-50: Looking Back, Thinking Ahead in the English Language Teaching Profession Time: 14.30 - 15.30 Biodata Dr. Cristina Banfi works at the Ministry of Education of the City of Buenos Aires where she has been Language Policy Coordinator and then Director of Languages in Education. She also teaches Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition at several institutions, including the University of Buenos Aires. She holds an M.Phil. from the University of Cambridge and a Ph.D. from University College London, both in Linguistics, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Higher Education Policy from the University of Buenos Aires. Her most recent books are El Aprendizaje de Idiomas: Cómo Habla la Mente and Exorcising Grammar (coedited). She was awarded a Fulbright research grant which she conducted at the University of CaliforniaDavis. Her research project was “Innovation in the teaching and learning of languages - Factors that influence in their planning, implementation and evaluation.”

Title: 50-50: Looking Back, Thinking Ahead in the English Language Teaching Profession Time: 14.30 - 15.30 Abstract Half a century is an important landmark for an association and an excellent opportunity to reflect on what has been achieved, where we are as regards to the APIBA’s mission and what challenges we will face in the years to come. This presentation will provide a bird’s eye view of the running themes that have occupied the association and its members as regards policies, curricular, approaches and contextual influences. Attendees will be invited to make an active contribution to the ongoing discussion and consider possible calls to action within the association and beyond. The changing nature of professional development, one of the main missions of the association, will be analysed as a catalyst for many of the key factors in the increasingly fast-changing scenarios of English language teaching.

Title and Abstract Discussing the Past to Build Bridges to the Present and Future in Our Classrooms Teaching Language and Culture has become a real challenge in the 21st century. Pandemic times have somehow contributed to our professional development, focusing on the use of innovative ways to deal with current topics in our classes. This SIG provides a forum for debates on new approaches and generates fruitful ideas for our classes. At the same time this work promotes collaboration and critical thinking. Title and Abstract Hands-on Apps to Improve Your Class! There is no doubt that the use of technology in the classroom has come to stay. But how effective has it been up to now? Abstract This presentation summarizes the main steps of 3 collaborative ethnography projects whose aim was to compare opposite perspectives on different controversial topics. The project required the students to interview an informant of their choice first, and then to apply specific Discourse notions such as thematization and staging to analyze a newspaper article on the same topic. Finally, they were asked to identify specific strategies that people typically use to control perspective. As a result, the students were able to draw their own conclusions, think critically and decide on their own stance.

Abstract In these pandemic times, more and more teachers are experimenting with digital tools. While some have started to include technology in their lessons in the same way they use a coursebook and a board, some others design their own context-sensitive digital materials to foster language skills. In this presentation, student teachers will share samples of technology-enhanced materials and their experiences and reflections while creating them.
