Dear Friends of APIS This year’s Pacific Pencil cover page features a wonderful painting by Johan Shin (Grade 2). Johan’s painting gave me an opportunity to think again as to what APIS education is all about. Johan sees the East and the West as two welcoming challenges (large “welcome” signs beckon everyone to the two spheres representing the East and the West). An even bigger “wow” factor for me was how Johan visualized the bridging of the “gap” between the East and the West: an arched “APIS Bridge” with golden rails! The arch of the “APIS Bridge” for me inspired a visual image of a rainbow—isn’t education supposed to be the promise of a bright future? The golden rails, on the other hand, resembled to me students standing hand in hand across the bridge between the East and the West. I then thought what an appropriate symbol the golden rails are of who we are as a community of learners, collaborating and supporting one another. I wondered what our 2nd grade artist’s actual intentions were with these images. That is what I love about art. It has a language of its own form, which inspires and communicates beyond what words can convey. The messages I got from Johan’s artwork also encapsulate well all of the collaborative efforts that went into this year’s publication. Various Elementary School departments collaborated to plan this year’s Write Across APIS Week where students wrote stories and poems about their own artwork. Hence, this year’s Pacific Pencil became an opportunity for students to integrate and combine their art and literary expressions. Writings from the Korean Writing Contest and a world map created by our KAL (Korean as Additional Language) students are also included, featuring our student’s literary and artistic works across different languages. Also, in preparing for this year’s publishing event, the High School Service Learning class students curated the exhibition and decorated display boards. Elementary SRC members sold poster cards to raise funds for the exhibition. Of course, nothing would have been possible without the year-long, leadership and planning by the Pacific Pencil Committee parents and staff members. This year’s Pacific Pencil is therefore truly a symphony of effort and dedication from many who care about this publication. A big round of applause for creating another masterpiece! Thank you! Dr. Euysung Kim Director
It is my pleasure to once again welcome you to this year’s edition of Pacific Pencil; our fourth edition. Each year, I am surprised by the final product because each year I think, it doesn’t get better than this. Once again I am pleasantly surprised. This year’s edition begins with a new cover designed by a Grade Two student depicting East meeting West, one of our school’s themes. The cover was selected in a “blind” competition from nine groups judged by the Pacific Pencil Committee and three Art teachers. Another change for this year is that our young writers’ literacy piece is a response to their artwork. So this year to help show the connection of the two pieces of work, you will see them both together. As I have written previously, these pages are filled with the wonderful works of students as they “aspired” and then “persevered” to become artists and writers. I hope you enjoy their products as much as I do. Pacific Pencil continues to also be an example of team. This book has been the result of what happens when a group of dedicated teachers and parents come together with a common purpose and then remain committed to a great idea. Many of the members, both faculty and parents, have served on this team for the past four years. As well both our Student Representative Council and the High School Service Learning class have continued their role as an important part of this team. The SRC is involved in the management and sale of cards which are made from the individual student’s art work and our Service Learning Class continues curating the event and decoration of the display boards. The intelligence of team! In closing, I would like to sincerely thank all of the people who have helped make Pacific Pencil happen. Thank you to our parents who sponsored and committed significant time in putting together the exhibition for the publishing party. Thank you to the two student groups who have contributed to this worthwhile endeavor. And finally, faculty, as always, you are the best! Well done everyone! When I first initiated publishing the Pacific Pencil magazine nearly four years ago, I had two big visions in my mind; the first is collaboration and the second is celebration. Over the years, I have been so amazed by the dedication of the staff, teachers, and parents in making this celebration happen for our elementary students at APIS. We are so proud of this tradition that we have at APIS to keep a record of every single ES student’s writing and artwork every year. Without the dedication and commitment of the APIS community, this publication and the celebration wouldn't have been possible. Thank you so much! Special thanks goes to all of the APIS elementary students, teachers and all those who helped with the planning of the magazine: Steve Massiah, Suanne Forrester, Judy Park, Elaine Lee, Jeff Underhill, Emily Kim, Kirstan Beatty, Jeff Woodrow, Brian Beatty; and to Nicole Suh for her endless work of designing the magazine. Many thanks also go to the Pacific Pencil Parents Committee, High School Service Learning class, and our staff members for their help and support in making the Pacific Pencil publishing ceremony and Art Exhibition happen. Finally, a special thank you to Dr. Euysung Kim for his leadership and support. Anna Sea Elementary Art Teacher

Crack crack. The egg opened up! The dragon pulled his head out and slowly opened up his eyes. Everybody was looking at him. He looked around and saw some dragons and people when he got out of the nest. A lot were baby dragons and some were grownups. He was named Johnny. Jonny’s parents were gone before he was born. He didn’t even know his parents name. Johnny was really nice and an ordinary dragon. When a dragon was born he stared at them. But one day he saw something happening to him. He saw ANOTHER HEAD!!!! He shouted in FEAR, “I grew another HEAD!” Everybody looked at him. His friend John said, “YOU ARE OLDER THAN ME!” The head said, “What’s the matter with me? Am I weird or something?” “YOU CAN TALK?” Johnny said with surprise. “Um yes, can’t you hear me!!? Silly?” the head replied. So they got to be brothers. One day another dragon named George came and grew a head. Johnny said he will talk. So Johnny, Johnny’s other head, Joe, George and George’s other head got together and name them the Ugly Dragons. One day they saved the day by catching a robber that stole a ring. They have long necks so they grabbed the robber by their teeth. Then the cops got to return the stolen ring back to the owner. The four dragons were heading to their house but they got interrupted. They met somebody that was evil but they didn’t know that he was a bad guy. He was a dragon too! His name was The Tough Dragon. He was very rich and he had four heads too! They were evil too. The fire dragon was the meanest and the BOSS. When the ugly dragons got to know The Tough Dragon, they wanted to know more about him. So, they went to their lab and typed in his name and they discovered that he was a bad guy! So the ugly dragons went back to the bad guy again and said, “You guys are bad guys!!“ The bad guy said, “That’s not true?” and then The Tough Dragon shouted “Let’s get them!!” The ugly dragons wanted to use their powers but they needed more energy. Strange Ball Jean Lee “Look there is a soccer ball!” shouted the pen then the pen bin shouted, “There’s a goal too!” “Let’s play soccer” said the pen bin. “Are you sure you are going to play soccer? You hurt your leg last time you played soccer” said the pen. Then the pen bin decided that he is not going to do it. The pen was bored and wanted to play with the ball he saw. So he kicked the soccer ball into the goal. “Aw” shouted the soccer ball. “I never knew a soccer ball can talk!” said the pen. I’m not a soccer ball. “Then what is your name?” asked the pen. “My name is Eraser” said the ball. Eraser was a white ball that liked to erase mistakes. He liked to stay on the ground and have never ever been in a high place. He was scared of heights and thought he would get hurt. He was outside to erase the soccer goal’s mistake. He was just taking a break to get some fresh air when the pen kicked him. The pen bin continued “oh.” Then the pen said, “I didn’t know that. Sorry for kicking you.” “It’s okay” said Eraser. “Well do not kick me again.” “Okay” said the pen. “Now what can we play?” “Let’s play basketball!” said the pen. “Oh no” said Eraser with fear. Now he thought that pen was going to hurt him again.

“Help! Help!” said the Paper.
“What!” said the Brush. “I want to become an Art work!” Crayon said, “Do you want to become colorful?” said Crayon. “But then you will have to get pencil’s magic!” Glue said. “I’ll make you sticky to climb to the highest hill!” said Glue! Brush said, “Do not ask Crayon because Crayon’s power never wins the Pencil!” “What?” said Paper. Paper was angry at that time, he stomped his feet and called Scissor and said, “I will break all the crayons!” and it went to the Crayon and said “I’ll ruin you!” “NO!” said Crayon. But Paper said to say that and Paper went to the Pencil. On his way, Paper saw a LOST poster and it said “Lost Brush at the Paint Factory.” He read more and it said that if you find the Brush, you will earn 10,000 dollars! It also said to come to the Outside Land to get the money. Pencil called the guards and said, “Cut that paper thingy!” Paper just got a little cut but it caused a problem because Paper was not perfect anymore. Tape came to the Paper and said, “I’ll become a shape paper!” Thank you it was like a joke but…Oh that time, guards put Paper in jail but Paper’s magic was shooting out logs to ruin and it was so powerful. Paper knows it so the great time Paper became a shape paper. But it wanted some colors so Paper said, “Let’s ask Crayon!” But problem was that Paper hurt Crayon’s feelings! That was a big problem. Paper and Glue asked, “Can you make me colorful?” “No!” Crayon said. “Why?” asked Paper. “You hurt my feelings!” replied Crayon. Because Brush was a big bully, Brush’s goal was to make Paper so normal. Wow, Paper did a big fight with Crayon. Paper shoots some logs and Crayon almost got ruined. Big danger was at the Paper and Brush came and said, “My goal was to make you look normal! Hahaha” “Wow, oh no!” said Paper. Paper shoots some more logs and Brush was surprised because Paper never had a power like that. Paper said, “Did you think I never had powers? Just like others?” “Yes” said Crayon. “I got them at last fight with scissors. Now I have a power to make any powers that I really want. So I heard that Paint was your mother but I know that your dad’s name is Paint Paste. I know! Ask your dad!” But Brush said, “No!” “I’m the Lost Brush.” “That Lost Poster was you? Oh, so you are the Lost Brush at the factory that makes paint!” “Oh I was the Lost Brush?” asked Brush. “My dad lives on the land called Outside Land. It is the most dangerous place and you need a chest plate so they went in and Crayon was there so Crayon said, “Get the powers!” “What?” said Paper. Crayon called some friends to cut and destroy Paper. But Paper did not get destroyed because he was wearing the Outside Land Chest Plate. And at the Outside Land there were 30 friends that Paper knew already. He asked for help and they helped Paper find Brush’s father. They found him at the super cave that was full of bat guards. Brush’s father gave the 10,000 dollars to Paper. Then, he put his paints on Brush’s mother who’s the paint case. Brush’s mom just woke up and as a reward, Paper was painted with paint and tuned into a shaped colored paper.

He waved and shouted, “Okay, Okay, bye.” The horseman got in trouble and got fired for leaving the princess. “Mommy, mommy I just see a seat just my size!” shouted the kid. “Ok, ok, ok I will go with you and I will let you go on the dragon.” The kid finally got to take a ride on the dragon.

But it felt like many hours. Finally mom opened her eyes and the baby dragon hugged her so tight! The baby dragon was glad the mom was all better and they lived happily ever after.

3rd 1st Grade Mandala’s Color Catherine Cho
Long, long, long ago there was a little girl. Her name was Ocean. She was born under the sea. Ocean was a human that can breathe under water. One day Ocean found a beautiful mandala under the sea. The mandala had many designs but had no color just like the sea creatures. Ocean hid the mandala in a great hiding place in her room. After she hid the mandala she walked out of the ocean to eat food in town. She doesn’t eat seafood because the seafood is her friends. Ocean was thinking about her mandala and the sea creatures, and where all the colors went. When Ocean went back into the ocean, she went to her room and got her mandala from the hiding place. While she was getting her mandala, something hit her arm. It was a clownfish. The clownfish asked Ocean if she could give some color to him and his friends. Ocean was very confused. The clownfish told Ocean how her mother took all the colors in the ocean. All of the colors were trapped inside a little container. Ocean had the container in her room and she understood the clownfish. She had the container since her mother died. The clownfish said that Ocean was the only one to give the color back to the sea creatures because she was the one who has the colors. If Ocean put a little drop of color on her hand, everything she touches gets back its color. Ocean was very excited. She really wanted to touch all of her stuff quickly. She hurry swam to her room and got the container. The clownfish followed. She slowly opened the lid and put a little drop of color in her hand. Ocean had fun touching everything in the ocean. Ocean touched her mandala. But something happened. When she touched her mandala, the color kept on changing. She touched it again. The colors changed slower and slower and s l o w e r. I t b e g a n t o s t o p c h a n g i n g c o l o r. W h e n i t stopped it was the colors of the ocean. Ocean was very happy with the colors and of course she was mostly happy about her beautiful mandala.

3rd Kinder Grade 5 Two Worlds Christine Jeong
Grizelonia is a chaotic world, and has fancy stuff like gold, aqua leather, and silver. Long ago, there was a servant of the king of Grizelonia. His name was James. One night, in James’ dream, God came and said “I am going to send a flood to Grizelonia, because this world is old and getting poor. Build a new world next to this one. Do not build buildings but built little cozy houses, a simple big palace, and only grow nature.” After that James woke up and God was front of him! He only said “Good luck” and then vanished into the darkness. James traveled around Grizelonia and sketched only the nature and cozy little houses and started to build a new world. It looked just like James was picturing in his drawings: little cozy houses, trees, flowers and a simple palace. When the new world was finished James named the new world, “Earth.” One day, the sky was foggy and James thought God is ready to send the flood. The rain came and got worse and worse. The people started to lose their homes. So James boarded everyone on to the biggest airplane in Grizelonia. It took 1 hour to go to Earth. The pilot announced, “We are going to arrive to the Earth in 2 seconds.” They arrived. Everyone crowded the door to go out from the airplane. After that, the Earth was full with laughs. “Ha-ha! I’m proud of you! You are going to be king of Earth!” said the King to James. So the next day a coronation and party happened! They ate turkey and ice cream. Plus, it was James’ birthday! And happy days always happened with no problems.

3rd 1st Grade The Wrongly Behaved Granny and the Smart Girl Claire Park One day, there was a girl named May. She was 9 years old and worked with a granny. This granny has fuzzy hair, a wrinkled nose, and a weird coat that’s never been washed and she has bad manners. May worked as granny’s manners teacher every day. But even though she’s just a manners teacher, she has to stay with the granny 24 hours a day to make sure she doesn't snore while sleeping and never slurps her noodles and doesn’t yawn when she wakes up and to make her never wear her clothes backwards. But there’s also another reason May has to stay with the horrible granny. It's because she has to teach her how to talk to other people. Here’s an example:
The granny says “GIVE ME TEA!” “No, no, no,” replied May. “If you want tea, you should say ‘May I have a cup of tea my young lady?’” So the mad granny said impatiently yelled “MAY I HAVE A CUP OF TEA MY YOUNG LADY?” Soon May said “Yes I will make you tea although I would be more delighted if you changed your harsh tone into a proper more lady-like tone.” Anyway while the old granny was eating her breakfast, May went to the forest to take a walk. She talked to herself while walking and thought, I’ve had enough of this old big meany granny. I want to get rid of her but how? Then, an idea hit her head and the idea was that there was a black poisonous tree and she would make the bark into tea. The granny would drink it and die and May’s job would be done so she could go back home and see her family. Thankfully she found the tree, took a bark and dried the tree bark for 30 minutes. Later she put the tree bark in a special tea bag and boiled the water for an hour. Finally the tea was finished. Just like May promised in the morning, she gave the tea to the granny right away. The granny drank the tea and in less than a second, the granny clucked like a chicken and poofed out of nowhere. After about five minutes, the granny never came back. May turned on the T.V and she cracked up when she saw the news. The news reporter reported, “Today a space rover saw a dead granny on Mars! Now I have a question: Who would be insane enough to go to Mars without any training and without any part of outer space clothes?” Then May replied to herself, “The old selfish granny of course.”

Mrs. Sea Joanna Kim
One of the Art teachers at APIS is Mrs. Sea. She has long hair that she always has in a ponytail. She never has her hair down. She has dark brown eyes. Mrs. Sea has a daughter named Chloe. Funny things happen to Mrs. Sea. For example, one time Chloe pushed the shower door open when Mrs. Sea was showering. Another time, Chloe became like an ice cream lady when she tried to eat ice cream from a cone by herself. But got it all over her. This happened with sand, too. Mrs. Sea helps us during Art time. She teaches us how to make awesome art like mandalas, imaginary towns, and even portraits made out of newspapers! She has after school activities about Art. For example, one project we did was making structures with recycled stuff. Another time, we got to do pottery. Mrs. Sea is fun, kind, and awesome. She is fun because she tells us funny stories. She is kind because she lets us paint colorful paintings. She is awesome because she lets us draw on big papers. I wish everyone could have a teacher like Mrs. Sea. She teaches Art in a fun way. She is the best Art teacher EVER!!!

Amazing David Jinu Hong Once there was a boy named David. He grew up in a place called Titcomb. It was next to Earth and it was like Africa. There were all types of magic warriors. For example, dragon warriors who fight for the war using dragons. David’s dad trained him to be a warrior. He would time David as he ran around a track. They had pretend fights and practiced riding dragons. Three years later, David became the strongest and best warrior. His dad kept on training him. But, David said, “Can you stop training me?” “No,” his dad replied. The next day, David couldn’t hold it much longer so he planned to go to Japan because that was the only place he knew on Earth. While he was waiting for the plane, he looked at the newspaper. It said, ‘The final playoffs get 1,000,000 dollars in America.” Should I go to America? David thought. So he picked to go to America instead of Japan. The next day, David arrived in America. He walked out of the airport and got in a taxi. The taxi driver took him to his rental house. As David walked around the neighborhood, he noticed a football stadium. “Hey, there is the football stadium I saw in the newspaper,” David thought. So he walked in the entrance and went to the field. He saw the football team practicing. He walked over to them and said, “Hey! Can I join the team? I really want to be rich.” He looked strong so the coach said that he could join the team. One year later, they were so excited about the playoffs. The game started. Soon, the score was tied 17 to 17. It’s the final play of the game. There are only 15 seconds left. The quarterback threw the ball down the field. David ran as fast as he could, he looked behind him for the ball. There is was. Suddenly, he had the ball. He juked and spinned and made a TOUCHDOWN to win the game! He got the money and got a rich house lived happily ever after.

3rd 1st Grade Paid Off Gymnastics Margarette Gatesi
Once upon a time there was a girl named Martha. She liked to do gymnastics every day. She worked harder each day getting better to get ready for the Olympics! She worked hard on the balance beam every day. She used the special poles which she put her hand and jumped. After all that hard work, she made it to the Olympics. This year they were in Australia.
She took an airplane there with her coach. When she arrived, she had butterflies in her stomach. She was so nervous that she was worried about everyone else looking at her. She was afraid she might fall. Her coach said, “Don’t care about others. Care about what you do.”
The crowd was quiet for a long time. Martha stepped on to the balance beam. She took one step to start her routine. At the second step, she looked at the people watching her. They started to applaud and cheer. They jumped up when Martha did a triple somersault. Martha felt confident. She finished her routine without any mistakes. It was like a dream! She got a gold medal and her coach was so happy because all their hard work paid off.

The Contest Louise Choi-Schattle I walked to school on a rainy Saturday. I was absent yesterday because my brother kicked me out of bed and I had to check at the doctor’s office and get an x-ray and ultrasound. Anyway, I got soaked even with my umbrella. At least Sena would not be at school. I was wrong. She was waiting for me at the door. “Jiyun, I think you’re in detention,” I hate it when she says that I’m in detention. “So I prepared a little surprise for you. Anyway, Guten Tag to the world of detention! Have a nice twelve hours, Ji-e-e-yun!” I ignored her. Let a communist think like a communist, I thought. I ran into the school building. I couldn’t wait to see the ‘surprise’. It was probably something like a collection of dead spiders, or maybe a dissected frog. But it was not. It was a painting. My own. What my art teacher called ‘Tree Triptych’, I called ‘sloppy.’ The painting was basically a few lines with some scribbles. I hated it. Then there was this contest, where first prize you get a master’s degree and a good job, and if you don’t get a prize you get kicked out of the college. Out of the 200 students, only 10 are chosen. The contest is based on some kind of writing, and this year the theme was ‘getting inspired by your own drawings’. I had never been chosen as first prize, or second, or third, or fourth. I had only been chosen for some things like tenth, so I barely made it to my third year in college. This year, I was determined to get a prize between third and first. I sighed, then walked to my dorm, carrying the picture, to start the story.
I had no idea what I should write about at first. The school gives you a notebook to write in, so I started writing in it. I drew a table of ideas but that just took up space. In the end, I decided to forget about organizing and started to write.

Long ago, wait. That sounded too classy. Is it? She didn't know. Every year there is one. Isa was so tired of it. The point of it? She didn’t know. After I began writing, I suddenly realized that it would be hard to decide on the topic and that I should somehow include three trees in it. From the inside, Isa hated it. But she couldn't say it. She was never really good at sports, but this contest proved her wrong. Isa had trained for this for only 6 months. I sketched how this story was going to go. A year earlier... "Isa! Come watch the program!" called Isabel. "Coming!" "Is today the day for basketball?" Staring at the TV, she saw Johanna, her best friend on the screen. Sena burst through the door of my room. "Like my surprise? I chose it for you. Anyway, I came here to show you my story. It is so awesome! I think it will win first prize!" She handed it to me. Three pages long with very small handwriting, it took me about ten minutes to read. I have to admit, the story itself was good, but the grammar and punctuation was a mess. If not for the grammar, I thought to myself, I actually think it could win. Sena seemed to read my thoughts. “Mrs. Irene said she would help me with the grammar. I’ll be joining your class tomorrow.” I doubted it. “Can you get out of my room?” I said. “No.” But she left anyway. I snuggled up in my bed, and drifted off to sleep.
The next day, during the first period which is writing, we were given free writing time to work on our stories. And Sena was right. She sat at the desk that I normally sat in, and received way more help than the rest of us. When Mrs. Irene finally came to me, she asked me to read her my story. When I finished she commented, “It’s a good story, but I think it’s a little too detail heavy. You should re-read and change the things that do not need detail.” “But my story is too short!” I glared at Sena for disturbing me last night. “Then swap writings with another person and revise each other’s writing. Wait a minute! That’s it! Class, please choose a partner and swap writings.” Right away, Sena grabbed me. “Let me see your terrible writing.” she sneered. We read. I have to admit, even with the fixed grammar, it was still pretty bad. When we were finished and I got my story back, it was a mess. There were doodles on the margins, and on the front page (My only page) there was a big, fat, F and the words ‘failure’. So I put the same thing on her paper too. The Sena told the teacher, and I got in trouble. After that was lunch. It didn’t feel better because the lunch menu read ‘Egg salad’. I decided to skip lunch. For the next few days, I worked all the time, and made sure the door was locked. Sena kept criticizing me, but most of them I could ignore. This process continued until the day of the contest……
I shot up from my bed. Excited, I ran into the last person I wanted to see: Sena. “Today is my day of victory! See you at the contest ring! Bad luck!” I was glad that she hadn’t said anything more. I took one last look at my story, made a few little changes, ran to the auditorium. I hope Sena goes to the contest ring instead of the auditorium. The contest ring was outdoors, and was for concerts, not contests. I looked out the window. Sure enough, Sena was wandering around the ‘contest’ ring, yelling “Why is no one here! I thought that it was here!” She soon enough found out that it was somewhere else. The other contestants were already forming some kind of alliance and were editing each other’s stories. Then the judges announced the winner. “Sena Choi!”
Epilogue
Sena whooped and yelled. She back flipped over my head while the crowd bwooed. The next winners’ names flew past me. Then I realized that my name was never called. Later that day, I heard that I was eleventh. Just after tenth. Now, I had a new rival to bust.

4th Grade Monsters, Action, and Exciting to Read Davis Beatty Do you enjoy reading adventure stories that have a lot of action? If you like adventure stories, you should read and watch Percy Jackson. Why should you read and watch Percy Jackson? There are many reasons why you should, but I am just going to tell you three. First, it is full of monsters and action. Second, they are exciting to read and watch. Lastly, there are three series. The first reason is it is full of monsters and action. There are many, many, many, many monsters that are in this book. There is Medusa, she has a lot of snakes on her head. Geryon, he has three bodies and is the owner of a ranch. Kampe, is a monster that was so old regular animals weren’t fully formed yet. Minotaur, who tried to kill Percy when he was trying to get to the borders to camp half-blood, and many more. In the book there are quest that have a lot of monsters. You should read this book because the monsters are exciting to read about how they look, fight, and die. In the first book, the quest was getting the lightning bolt. It is Zeus’s weapon made by Hephaestus. In the second book, it is finding the Golden Fleece. The fleece can heal anything in the world. The third book, it is finding Athena… fourth, finding Daedalus and his workshop...fifth, deciding which side Percy should go on. The reason you should read all of these quests is because they are exciting to read and adventurous. Some monsters and people die but there is always a happy ending. No doubt you should be reading this book is because it is full of monsters, dialogue, and you meet new characters all the time. The second reason is they are exciting to read and watch. There is a always a quest that involves fighting with monsters. A quest is an adventure that is difficult they have to go on and complete. There are 5 books in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians Series. The first book is about Percy finding out he is a half-blood and son of Poseidon. The second book is about finding Thalia who was made into a tree and now she wasn’t. The third book is about Thalia going to hunt with Athena and her hunters. The fourth book is about finding Daedalus’s workshop and Daedalus. The fifth book is about Percy choosing a side. My personal favorite is the Sea of Monsters. The second book has also been made into a movie. The Sea of Monsters is also my favorite because you get to see Kronos. It is really cool! The last reason you should read these books is because there are so many to read and you meet many great characters. The first series of books are: The Lightning Thief, The Sea of Monsters, The Titan’s Curse, The Battle of the Labyrinth, and The Last Olympian. In the Olympians Series three main characters are Annabeth-daughter of Athena, Percy-son of Poseidon, and Grover- a satyr. But wait there are more books, the second series of books are the Lost Hero Series: The Son of Neptune, The Mark of Athena, The House of Hades, and The Blood of Olympus. The three main characters are Piper-daughter of Aphrodite, Jason-son of Zeus, and Leo-son of Hephaestus. We are not done yet there are still more books. The third series books are The Red Pyramid Series: The Throne of Fire, and The Serpent's Shadow. The characters are Hazel-daughter of Hades, Frank-son of Ares, and Reyna-daughter of Bellona. Finally, that is all of the series. Thinking about all of the books my favorite character is Grover because he is a scaredy pants...but I am not telling you why, and is really funny. You should be reading these books because there are 3 series with different characters, and because it is interesting to read all the books and go on all of the adventures with all of the characters. So if you like adventure and actions these are the books for you. They have lots of cool monsters, they are exciting to read but also watch, and there are a ton of books to keep you reading.

One weird morning, in my fluffy and bouncy bed, I stepped down and took a big step towards my b e d r o o m d o o r. I w e n t passed the kitchen, where my mom was, and into to the living room and saw Amber, my younger sister, was a pig! I thought to myself….maybe this happen because yesterday I cast a spell for her to eat like a pig. “Oh no maybe my powers got out of hand!” I thought. I didn't think of her being a flying pig. I saw a big pink face, a big circle nose, hooves on her feet, and her big flappy wings. I went to my mom, “Mom, Amber turned into a pig!!!!!!!!” I yelled. “GGGGGGGRRRRRRRR, I herd you! Allison, oh how dare you use all my money!” she said angrily. She thought that because my wallet was filled with money. “Don't you care your second best daughter turned into a pig? I told you Amber’s a pig and I didn't take your money.” I said. “I don't care. We can get her fixed,” my mom replied. “Now say you’re sorry!” she demanded. “No!!” I answered. “What?!” said mom. “Ummmmm” I mumbled. I thought to myself, if I don’t run away she's going to keep saying I did it. I ran to the kitchen, then into the living room. “Iddah” I screamed. “Gooooooooooo!” I yelled. I saw Amber and headed for her. I hopped on Amber’s back. “Come back here and apologize to our family!!!”ordered mom. “You come right back missy!!!” screamed mom. While that was happening they didn't notice that we were all flying up into the clouds that lead into space. Suddenly, there was a spaceship and out came a green and purple alien. “Bghcgfwygfvmhgouadfg bib bip” said the Alien from outer space. “What?” I said. “Are we on the world?” I asked. “Yes,” answered mom.
“Ahhh!” I screamed. While we were running around the world the alien pulled out a giant camera and took pictures of me and my mom running around the world. But for some reason an old grandpa was floating in outer space but you barely could see him, except for the old saggy black skin, which I thought that was weird. My mom and I were both very tired and we both said let’s stop and we would not get mad while we go back to earth. I went on Amber with mom and gently floated down earth. We were back and we got Amber all fixed and found all our money. There were two lessons learned. Number one, for mom, don't accuse someone if you didn't look for something you need enough. Number two, for me, don't cast spells on people...only for emergency. I woke up and thought what a weird dream but I sort of liked it too. 34
4th Grade The Haunted House V.0.2.4 LAG Eugene Kim
Zzz… Zzz… Zzz… David woke up from his alarm by his bed. “It is morning.” David yawned. He said, “It’s a bright day!” The sky was clear and the sun was shining bright. David was lying in bed and thought to himself that he will go on a walk with Peter.
After they played soccer, they went to the swimming pool. David jumped in to the water and Peter ran into the water. The water splashed in their faces as they swam as fast as they could. Peter said, “Do you want to swim two laps?”
David went to Peter’s house. He walked up the steps, clicked the bell, and Peter came out. David said, “Peter let’s go for a walk in the mountains.”
David said, “Ok, if you want to.” David and Peter dove into the cool deep blue water. Peter came out fast but David stayed longer in the water. Then David came out and swam fast as he could so David won.
Peter said smiling, “Ok.” Peter went out with David. David said, “Do you want to race to the top of the mountain?” Peter said, “Ok.” They ran to the mountain as fast as they could. The mountain looked green and tall and the sun was shining as bright as a fire. As Peter and his friend ran through the woods they saw the sun begin to set in the distant. Peter thought to himself, how beautiful the sun looked as it went down below the trees. It was as beautiful as an angel coming down to earth. Peter began to feel scared and worried as it began to get dark. David thought he had been running for hours. His legs were hurting and it felt like chains were poking in his legs as he moved. Peter looked down at his watch and was surprised. David and Peter were mad and angry. They realized they got lost by themselves. David and Peter stomped on the ground. They lifted their feet high and stomped on the ground, BANG! BANG! BANG! David shouted AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! He didn’t know what to do.
David and Peter went inside the house and they were trying to sleep but they could not sleep because of the scary feeling of the house. David and Peter tossed and turned all night and dreamed nightmares in the night. David and Peter woke up in the morning. They went out the house and went out to get out of the woods. They kept going. Then they met a map seller in the woods. They had some money to buy some of the maps. David said, “Can you give us the map of this mountain?” The map seller said, “Yes.” David bought the map of the mountain. They looked at the map they found the way to get out of the woods. They kept walking then they found a way to go out the mountains. They went out of the woods. David kept the map and they went back to the house to play. They learned a lesson that we must be not really hyper and be careful in the woods.
They were walking anywhere and everywhere. Then they found a house in the woods. The house was made out of wood, metal, rock, and brick. The house looked scary, dark, and haunted. There was a swimming pool, a soccer field, a car, a road, and a large tree. It was larger than the house but the tree had no branches and no leaves. Then they began to play soccer on the field. Peter was the goalkeeper and David kicked the ball hard as he can. They kept playing soccer for hours.

Great Summer Jane Kim
A long time ago on a shimmering summer day, in a small beach side village there was a young man who had black spiky hair. His name was Jake. Jake was a very curious boy, who never gave up on any of his goals. Jake wanted in life to observe living creatures, but the main things he wanted to observe were happiness and fun. Jake decided to make the perfect water activity for the villagers to increase happiness and fun. Jake went to the beach to test his ideas. Jake jumped into the water for testing. He wanted to test to see if the water would float people. “What if there are many people that cannot float on the water?” Jake thought. “They would sink into the deep water and they would die.” SPLASH Jake felt something relaxable then he opened his eyes, he was surprised, he was floating on the water! Jake was excited because the puzzle pieces of his new idea were getting closer together. Next, he came up with the idea for breathing because he knew people can’t breathe long in the water and he wanted safety for his neighbors. Then, he realized that he needed some equipment in the water for the neighbors. He opened his sketchbook to figure out the best clothes and materials for his neighbors. In his sketchbook he created a girls collection and boys collection finally, after some thought he chose the girls clothes and boys clothes. Jake also decided after a couple of sketches what equipment would work in the water. All the clothes were made
4th Grade with easy material to dry and light materials to the float on the water. The equipment was made with tight rubbery materials that the water doesn’t come inside our weak parts for example, our eyes, head, and more too. This equipment is very important because it protects our body from danger. Jake’s activity was finally complete. It was perfect so, he went to the village elder to get permission to spread the news to the entire world that a new fun activity was born. In front of the huge gate he stood shocked. His mouth couldn’t stop shaking because this house was so much different than his own. It was heaven; it had everything you could ever want. Outside there were a thousand men in line to protect the village elder. As Jake looked around Jake saw something very precious. He became more nervous because he knew that the elder is the king of the village so, he could ban Jake from the village or kill him if he did not like his idea. Finally, Jake met the elder of the village. Jake was scared, he couldn’t move his body, even his mouth didn’t want to opened and cooperate. The elder had a grumpy face staring at him; his eyes were looking sharply to Jake’s eyes. Jake started to feel timid because the elder had an evil face to him. Jake was shaking like he was in a freezer but, at that time he realized that he is the only hope for his village. He is the only one who can make this new activity for the world. Suddenly, he changed. He stood up bravely for his neighbors and the lonely unhappy beach. Jake spoke loudly about his new summer activity invention to the elder of the village. After finishing his explanation and information about his activity the elder laughed loudly at Jake. Jake knew the elder of the village, he didn’t expect it because why would he laugh about my new activity, it is not funny… it’s serious. Jake thought his life was coming to an end. But, the boss didn’t say anything!!! He was still sitting in his golden chair laughing crazily!!! So, Jake asked a question to the boss “Why aren’t you putting me in the jail, and why are you laughing?” The boss replied, “It is because you have created a great activity for my villagers and you will make the village peaceful again. Always be brave, you can make it, you pass.” Jake couldn’t understand him but he didn’t care at all, because he safely passed. Jake hopped happily because he can now make the village peaceful and happy. Jake went to his house and started making thousands of swimming suit for the neighbors. When he finished making the thousands of swimming suits it was night, the sky turned black and dark and the sun went down and the shining moon came up. Jake lay down on his bed and fell asleep fast. The next morning, Jake woke up, jumped out of his bed, and looked out of the window. There was nobody outside, it was very hot outside and the sun was shining brightly. Jake was very worried because he knew that when the weather was like this people stayed inside. He didn’t give up easily so, he went outside bravely with his swimming suits and his materials in a cart. Jake walked through the hot steam in the streets and shouted “Don’t be afraid, I have a solution, come out!” Then miraculously it became true the people came outside shocked because Jake was only a teenager but he created a miracle. Jake knew it was the time to show the village the new summer activity that he made for his neighbors. Jake leads his neighbor to the beach. He gave each person a swimming suit. Jake demonstrated how to do strokes. There were many kinds of strokes, but you can always have your own relax pose. People changed their clothes to their swimming suits and started to swim at the beach happily. His goal was done. Swimming was so famous that it was known all around the world. Jake became the boss of the village. After few months, there were more swimming tools and materials created. For example, beach balls, sunscreen, ice cream, and other inventions too. All the people in the world were now enjoying summer. The world was saved by Jake’s braveness and always trying his best for others and by never giving up. That is how swimming was born.

The Secret Gate of the Lake Hara Choi
“Mom! When can we see the lake?” Amanda asked. “I think we just have to go a little farther,” as Amanda, and her sister Nicole, walk to the sidewalk, they realized their legs felt like burning coals and their bones felt like they were going to break. Nicole rushed to the fence behind the sidewalk they were standing on. She leaned behind the fence and slowly took out her water bottle from her purse. She gulped and gulped until the bottle was empty. “Nicole!!”Amanda shouted, “Nicole we found the lake!!” “WHAT?” Nicole shouted in excitement and ran where her mom and Amanda were standing. “So mom, where is the lake?” Nicole asked. “Over here just right by the sidewalk,” her mom replied. “So, what are we waiting for? Can we go to the lake?” Amanda asked. “Sure, let’s go,” they rushed to the lake and sat on the brown weather beaten bench. Amanda rested her legs on the stone below the bench and Nicole and her mom sat right beside the lake. “See mom! There are fishes!” Nicole exclaimed. “Really?” Amanda ran to the lake and pulled off her bag and took out her graham crackers and threw them into the lake. The fishes wiggled their tails back and forth while they ate the crackers.
38
4th Grade “Oooh! Oooh! I wanna try!” Nicole grabbed a bunch of graham crackers and threw them into the lake, but no fish came to her. Nicole came closer to the water’s edge and threw more crackers into the water but suddenly… “AHHHHH” Nicole shouted, and “AHHH” Amanda, who was next to Nicole shouted too. “NICOLE!! AMANDA!!!” Amanda’s mom shouted, but it was too late. Amanda and Nicole went into the deep blue water. Nicole rushed to Amanda side and grabbed her pulling her under the water. Amanda realized she could breathe under the water. “Mrrr” Amanda sounded like a little baby dolphin trying to breathe. “What!!??” Nicole shouted back to her, but as soon as Nicole said that, they both realized they could talk in the water. Nicole looked straight to the bottom of the lake and realized the water wasn’t just clear. It was colored with a bunch of different colors. Red, orange, yellow, green and blue. “AMANDA! LET’S GO THERE!!” Nicole pointed to the deep rainbow water. They swam together to the deep depths of the water and saw a big village. As they looked at the colorful buildings and houses they saw a golden colored cookie on a white table. “Look!! Fortune cookies!!” Amanda stretched her arms out wide and grabbed two cookies from the water. They shoved the cookies into their mouths and then looked at the strip of paper. “The gate of the lake will only open once!” Amanda read the paper out loud and became serious. “Nicole!! Does that mean the gate of this lake will only open once??” Amanda asked concerned, but Nicole didn’t have any answers. Nicole froze. But after a while she answered, “That’s easy….. we can go right now!!” Nicole and Amanda rushed to the top of the lake. “Wait!!! Please wait!!” a girl in a pink dress shouted, “Please, do you want to go to the carnival with me?” “Yeah sure!!” Nicole grinned. “Okay then lets...”
candy was shining like a piece of crystal calling out to them. Nicole reached her hand to the candy. “NO!!!” Amanda shouted, “He’s just trying to distract us from going to the gate,” Amanda whispered. “Right….” Nicole dropped the candy and swam away to the top of the lake. “Nicole!! The gate!” Amanda pointed to the golden gate. It was decorated with crystals, glowing rubies and it was opened wide. Nicole and Amanda were trying to go in but they heard another voice. “Amanda, it’s probably another distraction. Let’s just go through.” “Girls….. I’ll give you a chance to be the ruler of the underwater world…. so come, then you will be the queen of this world,” a dark deep voice started to come out from the side of the gate. “You will have all of the gold and treasures you could ever want.” “WHO ARE YOU?” Amanda shouted, “Shush Amanda!! This might be a good chance for us!! Just think about it!! Being the queen of the underwater world…” Nicole covered Amanda’s mouth. “WHAT ARE YOU THINKING ABOUT!!! We can’t get back home if we stay here... and LOOK!! THE GATE IS CLOSING!!!” Amanda pulled Nicole by her arms and stuck out her hand to the closing gate. Luckily, Nicole and Amanda were skinny, so they could go through the tiny, tiny space that was left in the gate. Nicole stepped to the ground and laid down beside her purse looking like a melted jello. Her mom shouted, “NICOLE!! AMANDA!! ARE YOU ALRIGHT??!! ARE YOU HURT? WHAT HAPPENED IN THERE?” “We saw ghosts and other creatures trying to distract us mom,” Amanda answered. “Oh and we didn’t get distracted or give up on going to the gate. We decided we had to go through!!” Nicole added. “What are you talking about?” her mom exclaimed. They walked to the street beside the lake and talked about all of the adventures they had underwater. They were glad to be on dry land again.
“NO AMANDA!!” Nicole shouted, we have to go back to the gate of the lake!” Then Nicole and Amanda realized something was going on in the girl’s face, it was changing. Her eyes turned sharp and her face turned red. Her pink dress was no longer pink. “SHE’S A MONSTER!!” They swam and swam to the big stone and hid themselves. But they heard another sound. “Hello!!” a boy in a green swimming suit greeted, “Do you want one of these magic candies?” he asked. The

Voldemort Is Back Justin Suh
The wind was blowing strong and rain fell, the ground shook and Voldemort, the greatest evil ever, stood on a cliff smiling as Harry Potter and Percy, a prefect, were running together. They pressed the silver trophy together desperately hoping that it would lead them back to professor Dumbledore and to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. BOOM! “Ahhhhhhh” they screamed as they blasted off and in half a second they were in a very dark an unknown area. Harry got up and suddenly Voldemort appeared. “Touch the trophy!” Harry yelled. Clearly not understanding Percy asked back. ”Why?” Too late a statue grabbed Harry and Harry got hurled into a lake. Just as Harry was about to go surfing through the water a tough voice shouted. “Stop!” he said “I am superhero and I will stand up for justice!” “Wait, what?” the superhero asked to himself definitely confused. “Run!” Harry yelled. Too late, just as the superhero was starting his talk about how scary heroes could be, Voldemort laughed a sinister laugh and as he zapped both, the hero and the prefect Percy. Voldemort said “You are no match for me!” Percy was lucky because he landed butt first but the senseless superhero was not so lucky since he landed head first right into gravestone which must have been ouchie, ouchie. Then the giant started his attack again. The giant grabbed me with his hand, used his giant body as a cross, and Voldemort came forward with a knife and stabbed me in the hand. Suddenly… “Ahhhh,” I whispered gnawing my teeth. When almost all of Harry’s hope for help was lost a giant eagle came forward and hurled a giant spike right into Voldemort's rump. “Youichi!” Voldemort screamed as Harry quickly got up and touched the trophy and with a powerful blue ZAP the light led Harry and Percy back to Hogwarts. When they got up they noticed that they were in Professor Dumbledore's room but the professor was not there. When Harry got up he shouted “PERCY” but that did not help. Percy was dead and that was that. When Harry came to his senses and felt more calmed down he pushed the gigantic door open and went out. When Harry got outside he noticed two wrong things. One: a huge giant was walking around, destroying everything he saw. And two: everyone was screaming around and going crazy because of that one enormous giant. Quickly Harry got his wand and and yelled “ALAMORA!” and the giant got zapped but the tiny zap only annoyed the giant. The giant picked up his sword and hurled it at Harry. Just as the sword was about to hit Harry’s chest a huge force swooped down and smashed the giant sword to pieces.

When Harry thought he was dead and he opened his eyes but instead of being in heaven there was Professor Dumbledore. The Professor sighed and with a single swing of his arm he set all the destroyed furniture back into place and all the messed up stuff was neatly back to where it was. In less than a minute everything was back in place better than before. As for the giant he was just standing there amazed. With another swing of the Pro’s arm the giant was instantly put in a cage and carried away by two elves. “As for you…” began Professor Dumbledore “…you got away from Voldemort but still my brother is not defeated. Suddenly, the metal doors opened with a big CLANG!!! A well fed man burst in crying. “Where is my son?” he shouted, “Sir” Harry tried to explain but the man did not listen. He unsheathed his one meter imperial gold sword and charged at Harry. Harry was so stunned he did not move. When the man was charging at Harry he first knocked over Professor Dumbledore and that gave Harry some time to reach for his sword but Harry was just too slow. The Chase Peter Jin Whoosh...Crash…Whoosh... In a deep blue ocean is where our story begins. There was a policeman and a bank robber swimming in the waves. The waves were crashing on them as they tried to stay above the water. The policeman was tall and thin and he was wearing his dark blue uniform. The bank robber, Jack, was fat and short, wearing old raggy clothes with holes. On Jack’s back there was a backpack with tons of money and TNT. The backpack was waterproof. The bank robber was swimming through the water very fast because he just robbed a bank and the policeman wanted to catch him. “Stop, Robber! You will never get away!” roared the policeman. “No! If I stop now, you will catch me!” that bank robber screamed. That bank robber thought he couldn’t swim away, so he wanted himself and policeman to die together. He would rather die than be caught. The policeman fired his gun to stop Jack but it only hit Jack in the leg. He stopped swimming. Jack knew what he needed to do next. He threw the TNT on the boat. The policeman didn’t want the TNT to explode so he swam to the boat, and got the TNT. Next, he tried to throw it away but he was too late. There was not enough time. The TNT exploded in his hand. Our story is now over and the lesson we should learn is policemen are great because they are brave and not selfish. As we see the red in the ocean it reminds us of bravery.

Basketball Camp Escape Matthew Kang “Mark you are a very good sport,’’ his parents always said. Mark had black straight hair and his skin was the color of a ripe peach. He had dark black eyes, a skinny body, and his muscles were well defined. Mark was a loving boy to his parents and was a good athlete. He was a pro at soccer, baseball, and dodgeball but most of all he was very skilled at basketball. One day his parents heard something in the news. It read: Basketball camp is a very fun and competitive place for all ages. Kids can learn fun basketball skills and play in a competition. Please sign up for the camp! Tell the camp director, Mr. Massiah, at APIS. Mark’s parents read it again and they made a decision. They knew that their son was an excellent basketball player. So they submitted a form to the camp, went to APIS, and walked up the stairs. They saw the colorful school with five floors. They saw a poster that was colored with brown and black stripes and it said:

4th Grade See Mr. Massiah at the second floor office, STRAIGHT AHEAD IN THE SECOND FLOOR.
Mark’s parents thought, “This could help Mark improve!’’ Mark’s parent’s walked in the door, stepped on the solid stone floor, and shut the door quietly behind them. After a few minutes later, they walked out of the door; they had submitted their own child to basketball camp. On April 21, Mark had his stuff prepared and was ready for basketball. He felt excited about camp, though he never went to a camp before until now. Still Mark had to go. Mark rode in his car and when he reached APIS his parents said “Good luck at camp Mark! See you in one week!” The car zoomed away leaving only couple of dust and smoke in the air. Mark coughed from the dust. When the smoke and dust was gone Mark starred at the five story school and thought. What if the coach was mean? What if I don't make any friends? What if we do other stuff instead of sports? Mark trembled and took three deep breaths and walked forward, all the way to the fifth floor gym. When Mark came up the steps he saw almost 999 kids but only 14 kids at the camp. Mark heard a bellowing voice, “THAT’S ENOUGH! SINCE IT’S THE AFTERNOON LET’S INTRODUCE OURSELVES!’’ After everyone introduced themselves they did a quick game of basketball. It was real hard to play with a bellowing King Kong coach Mark thought. He glanced at the coach, Mr. Massiah, and then the coach stared back evilly. During the nighttime, after the campers fell asleep, Mark wanted to give up and go home. After four days of camp, Mr. Massiah, the coach, became stricter and stricter like an evil raging bull. There were only two more days until the campers were set free. Still, Mark wanted to give up. The coach made the campers do twenty-nine push-ups every day. During the night, Mark sneaked like a sly fox trying to escape. He started to go down to the door but he saw the door was made out of a hard metal. He had a small burning light of hope when he saw a hideout near the door, which could fit just right for him. Mark ran to the hideout. The hideout was made out of stone and there was some rope and TNT in the hideout. Mark just knew what to do. He packed everything and put the TNT down and got a match from his bag and flicked it. “Pssshhh’’ went the dynamite. Five seconds later… KABOOM went the TNT. The gym had a gigantic hole which looked like it could have come from a big furious evil bull. Mark threw the rope to the closest tree he could find, jumped down, and swung. He was free! Mark looked down and saw he was only twelve inches away from the ground. Mark let go of the rope then BANG! Mark laid flat on the cement and tried to get up. Mark shakily managed to get up and walked slowly, as a slow turtle, and he managed to get to his tall apartment. When Mark went inside, he knew he would never EVER go to a camp again.

Tall Olaf and the Cookie House Sarah Koo
“It’ll never close again,” Elsa said to Anna with a big bright smile on her face. In fact, it was the first smile she had seen since she was young. After a few weeks, Olaf came to Elsa’s blue room at midnight. Olaf was a small, cute snowman that Elsa brought to life when she was younger. Elsa has a magic power in which she can freeze anything. She was close with Anna, her sister, when they were younger, but when Anna got hurt because of her magic power they couldn’t meet anyone anymore or go out the palace. In Elsa’s bedroom the wall paper was blue, the mattress was blue, and even Elsa’s dress was blue. Elsa was sitting on her bed, “Elsa…. ummm...” Olaf hesitated. “Why? Do you have anything to say?” Elsa replied. “Ummmm…. Can you make me taller? Please?” Olaf begged. “Well...but why?” She asked. “Because…. do you know the cookie house in front of the castle that the villagers made for us?” he said. Elsa nodded but she still didn’t know why. The villagers made the cookie house for the never melting skating rink and for Anna’s wedding. The cookie house was as tall as the castle, and there were all sorts of cookies in it such as: macaroons, Oreos, cupcakes, chocolates, ice cream…

4th Grade all sort of delicious things. Elsa and Anna were not sure if they should eat it or not. It was made using all of the best bakers from all over the world. “I see it every day and I can’t help myself from thinking about it. It’s making me hungry now. I want to eat it!” Olaf pleaded. “Oh, that’s why?” Elsa couldn’t help herself from laughing, and she softly fell to the floor as if she were a feather smiling. Just in case, she laid down two soft mattress that covered all of the floor. “Oh I’m sorry.” she said as still laughing. She could see Olaf beginning to be embarrassed. Even though he looked like a snow cloud, she could see him melting and his face getting as red as an apple from embarrassment. “It’s okay…but I really want to be taller and I really want to eat them. It will be rotten if you leave it like that!!!!!” He was now crying and melting. “Please? I don’t care if you don’t make me that tall. Please? Only half way tall to cookie house, PLEASE?” Olaf begged. Elsa thought he was going to cry, and he did cry. “A crying snowman? Why did I even make that?” she thought. He was melting so fast that she couldn’t even do anything. “Okay, all right. I’ll make you taller, SO STOP CRYING!!!” Elsa shouted as she sighed. “But there needs to be more snow. Where are we going to get it?” she asked anxiously. She turned around to see out the window. “See. It is summer. There is no snow outside.” Even though she can use her magic her room was too small and there were villagers in the ballroom so there was no empty room to use. It was too dangerous to do it outside. “Well, you can be taller but you won’t be cute any more. Is that okay?” “If I can turn back cute and small again, that’s okay,” he thought. “Yes,” he said with a deep breath. “Okay. You’ve said yes.” She said and made a little snow cloud and when the snow was almost on her blue bed, “Stop!” she shouted really fast. “Now start.” Suddenly, the cute small Olaf was gone and instead, there was a monster! He was really tall just like he wanted, and just like Elsa said he wasn’t cute anymore. “Yay!!! I can eat the cookie house now!” he said smiling. “What!!!!! I never said you can eat them!!! That is Anna’s ask her instead she said madly. “Okay” and he went too fast that she couldn’t tell him anything. “Wait Olaf I can….” “I can call her.” She thought he was stupid. So he went through the maze and finally arrived to Anna’s new house in the middle of the forest... “Anna! Anna! Anna!” he shouted to her as he opened the door. “Anna! Can I have your cookie house? Please?” he cried. She dropped her knife at her wooden floor when she saw Olaf. “Who are you?” She demanded. She was cutting fruit. Also, her house was really cozy, cool and charmingly decorated. “Hi! I’m Olaf. And I like warm hugs! You know me, don’t you? Elsa made me this tall!” “Well...” Anna replied as she broke out into a cold sweat because she was frightened. Well any one will do that if you meet Olaf that tall. “But why do you want to eat it?” “How did you know? I really want to eat it!” Olaf said. “Well, Elsa just called me with her new ice telephone.” Then, Olaf remembered what Elsa was trying to say. “I should’ve listened. I was having really hard time coming here,” he said. “The answer is yes but here is the deal. You have to give us, Elsa and I, each the kind of cookies we like from my cookie house. Can you promise me that?” “Okay!!! Thank you!!! You are the BEST!!! Bye!!!” and he left the door opened and went. “Elsa!!! She said yes!!! She said yes!!!” and he went out her blue room and went out to eat the cookies and something magical happened. There was an AURORA!!! “Surprise!!!” the villagers said in one voice. “Thank you so much!” and he didn’t forgot to keep the deal and he also shared all the other cookies with the villagers. Olaf learned a very import lesson: ask and listen before you act. They lived happily ever after!

In an apple village there was an old, very small house of a poor, but a kind apple named Jackie. Jackie was having a huge party. Jackie just had a baby apple! Jackie and her stubborn daughter, Linda, invited everyone in the village to the event. But while this was happening, the greedy Red Apple King heard about Jackie’s baby apple and shouted “I should get the baby right away!” and he went to find the baby. The reason he wanted the baby was because he never had ever had a baby before. For three days and three nights the greedy king traveled. He went up the steep, high mountains, went through the hot desert lands, and then finally to the Green Apple Village. Then he saw the village in the distance and thought carefully. He noticed the little cottages and how they looked cozy and nice, the clouds that looked like cotton candy, oh and the kid… “SNAP OUT OF IT! YOU ARE NOT HERE TO PLAY!!!” he finally shouted. “Are you okay my lord?” a knight asked in a shaky voice. “I am fine!!” he screamed! “JUST FIND THE BABY!!” Then the knights ran off crashing into every house. In Jackie’s place everything was just fine until… “May I hold her mom?” Linda asked. “Sure little girl,” Jackie replied. But before she said the last word…“Neigh, neigh!!” “What was that?” Linda asked surprised. Her

mom wasn’t listening she was looking out the window saying, “Hide, Linda, HIDE!” Linda quickly went into the closet slamming the brown wooden door behind her and listened really carefully to what they were saying outside of the door. “NO! NO, no, no, no, no ……” “We are sorry but we have no choice.” “NOOOOOOO, no, no!” “HOW DARE YOU SAY NO TO ME! YOU WILL BE IN JAIL FOR EIGHTY YEARS!! WE WILL GO NOW!” “Wait please.” “NEIGH!!!” After all this Linda slowly opened the door and carefully came out. Crumple “What the…..” then she looked at the bottom of her foot, a letter. And it said: Dear Linda, Come to the castle and get the baby apple. I will be fine. There is a basket in the closet. Take that and find the baby. BE CAREFUL! DO NOT USE THE SHORTCUT! Please bring food. There will not be any there. Mom After reading the short letter, she burst open the closet and took out the basket that had a map, a small bottle, and a key in it. Then she dumped in a few fruits, her mom’s fried chicken, bread, a big bottle of water, and 4 blankets. Be calm, Linda said in her head as she got dress, the baby apple just got apple-napped you just need to find her. When she was done she ran as fast as

Linda busted into the house and said, “I have to tell you something!” “Ok so tell me, what happen?” Few minutes later... “Do you want to come with me? Please, please, please, it is scary alone.” she begged. John, who was extremely annoyed, said nothing but nodded his head up and down with wide eyes. “Thank you so, so, so, so much!” praised Linda. “But here is the deal, if I go you have to listen to me,” insisted John. “What…. fine!” Linda hated if someone else was in charge but, she had no choice if she wanted to save them. “Let’s go!” Suddenly they heard a low voice. It was John’s dad. “Where are you going?” he boomed and they jumped a mile in the sky. The big hands caught Linda and said with a voice that shook the ground, “Don’t come back!!” and threw her out. “NNOO!” John said but his dad grabbed his apple stem. “Why do you hate her so much?!! What did she do to you?!!” John screamed. Very, very, slowly his dad’s big hand went off of him, then he and Linda ran as fast as they could. Linda looked back. John’s dad was only 40 meters behind her “Quick, hide behind that rock!” he whispered as they went out of gate of the village. Not knowing they hid John’s dad went straight into the woods. “There is a shortcut! Let’s go to the shortcut!” Linda said excitedly. “NO! Don’t you remember? Your mom lost her hand in there!” John shouted. “I don’t care.” and she vanished in to the cave of the shortcut. “Oh, darn it!” John muttered and he followed Linda inside. “John! There are crystals here and a lot of beautiful rocks, aaannnddd aa bbbeeeaaarrr?!!!! AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!! HELP, HELP!!” Linda screamed. “What is going on?!” John asked. “LOOK OUT!” she screamed. “Be quiet and keep calm.” he advised. “Ok now what?” she asked. “Just don’t get eaten….look rocks!” John shouted. John started to pick up big shiny rocks and aim for the sleeping bear’s head. It went perfectly, the bear slowly moved away from the door . “Come on Linda!” but Linda wasn’t listening, her eyes
were glued to the crystal. “What a beauty, touch it.” Linda said. “NO!” but before she even could get near it John blocked her and push her inside a secret room. “What is going on!?” she asked confused. “I just saved you.” John replied. “Thank you I owe you my life!” but then she started to think how nice he had been to her and how he thought her family was important, and how she never had been nice to him, only stubborn and being stubborn wasn’t going to help too. “It is your mom!” John said happily. In the room Linda’s mom was handcuffed and feetcuffed. There was a white cloth around her mouth. Linda went over and ripped the cloth off her mom’s lips and said, “Here is the food, mom.” “Dear, I told you not to come to me!” Jackie said tiredly. “No, you’re coming.” Linda replied. Then Linda took out a bottle from the basket and it said Sleeping Gum and she took out key. Linda got an idea. The plan was that she would put the sleeping gum on the gum and those stupid guards will eat it. She will also put the gum on the king’s desk so he could sleep. Then she would bring out the baby. “It’s that way to get to the castle. Good luck.” her mom said. “What’s this?” “IT IS GUM!!! LET’S EAT IT!!” “FINE.” “Why do I feel sleepy… zzzzz.” Yes it worked she said in her head. “Come on this way,” John whispered. They carefully walked down the hall and stopped at the big door that was made of pure gold, silver, and pears. John slid the gum under the door and they all listen, “Gum?! How good, how goooodd.” “John, go inside and bring her, no let’s go together,” Linda commanded. “Ok.” John replied. They slowly went in, and in a flash they came back with the baby. “Come on let’s go.” he said urgently and they got Linda’s mom and quickly went through the shortcut and back to Green Apple Village. After Linda’s adventure sure learned that being stubborn wasn’t the best choice. Now Linda wasn’t stubborn again, good.

Mine is from the same planet as Dominous. His body was like Dominous but had different colors. Mine’s body looked like a chocolate cookie. “WHAT!?! THE DEMON CATS ARE NOT ALONE???!!!!!” Dominous screamed. “Okay, calm down Dominous,” said Mine. “I think the Demon Cats are getting help from the aliens and their captain, Yaxell, from the planet Chaos, since we defeated them in the last war. They did not want to be defeated again.” Dominous asked, “Why are they heading for Earth?” Dominous noticed the aliens were heading directly for Earth. He also noticed that the Demon Cats were not heading for Earth. Dominous thought to himself, I wonder if the Demon Cats are planning to block us from protecting Earth. Scaley said, “I know why Yaxell and his minions are heading for Earth!” Scaley is Half Demon Cat/Half Nyan Cat
50
4th 1st Grade because he was born in the middle of the two planets. Scaley wants to only be a Nyan Cat. The reason he wants this is because he learned that being evil isn’t who he wants to be. He wants to be a good person in life. “Earth has been helping our planet survive Dominous. The Nyan Cats have a special power that can absorb air from Earth which keeps their body alive. Without Earth the Nyan Cats would die since they would not be able to refuel their air supply. “There is only one reason they are trying to destroy Earth,” said Scaley. “WHY?” asked Mine. “REVENGE” “OH YEAH, THIS IS WAR!!” said Kate with evil smile on his face. Kate has an invisible armor that he wears. He looks same as Dominous but has a shining cookie body.
Meanwhile on the Demon Cat planet... “Hehehe, they won’t win against us!” said Yaxocieus. Yaxocieus is an evil God. His spirit was so evil it created a monster called Yaxocieus’s Spirit. The cat, Yaxocieus, is from the middle of the two planets. He is white and red with red eyes. “Not really…..” said Time. Time is from the Demon Cat planet. “Arc-Angel says it could be impossible….” “We can lose, they won in last war and they are still strong.” said Arc-Angel. Arc-angel is from the Demon Cats planet and is fighting with Yaxocieus. Soul said, “Anyways let just go!” Soul is from the Chaos planet. He has a green colored cookie body. Meanwhile, the aliens were destroying Earth, the Nyans and Devils met… Yaxocieus said, “LONG TIME NO SEE DOMINOUS!” Soon the Magical Cat War II started. SHING! “You ain’t gonna break my weapon!” said Mine. “Oh really…” said Arc- Angel they both had an explosive destructive fight.
Meanwhile, Yaxocieus was… “TAKE THIS!” Yaxocieus shot a Beam at Dominous. “Rainbow Shield!” the beam Reflected by the power of the Shield… “Well you’re lucky!” as Yaxocieus said this he created a cloud. “THUNDER!!!” the shot aimed perfectly for Dominous created a cloud but he
realized Dominous was also creating a cloud. “Rainbow Beam!” the shot aimed for the Thunder. BOOM. They got combined and exploded.
Meanwhile, Kate was fighting… Kate said, “Fire BEAM!” The Fire was so fast that it hit Time’s chest as fast as lighting. “Ow! That hurts, alright!!” He charged his hand with power. Then he threw a knife. The knife was so fast because of the charge, it hit Kate’s arm. “ARGH! My arm is paralyzed!” “Ha, too bad my knife had a poisonous liquid!” Kate closed his eyes and drank a potion. Kate shouted, “Knife Breath!” Knife Breath is a skill that your breath. It is as fast as light and it’s really sharp. It hit the chest of Time. There was a hole in his chest. Then he started to fall to the sun. “Well, that did it,” said Kate. Then Kate made a sound of the victory, “NYAN!!!!!!!!” Soon the Nyan Cat team got away from the Demon Cats and gathered. Together they were summoning a Rainbow. “Rainbow, BLAST!” said all the Nyan Cats together. Soon the Demon Cats were creating a strange thunder in their hands. “Demoni…..” but they were too late. The massive blast was about to EXPLODE in on them. BAMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!!!!! Soon they vanished. Their last words were “I will count on you aliens…” then Yaxell heard the sound and turned around. The Leader Yaxell said, “Hey challengers, GO MINIONS DESTROY THEM!!!!!” Next, Dominous drank a potion and said “Copy!” Soon there were tons of minions of Nyan Cats. After 10 minutes the both minions died. Yaxell drank a potion, Fire Blast! There was a beam of fire that was about to explode. “Knife Breath!” shouted Kate. It reflected strongly. There was a big fight when they almost used all of their energy Dominous said, “I won’t let our planet be destroyed!” Soon Dominous made a scythe with the stars. He said, “Moon Slash!!!” Moon Slash is a skill that was practiced by million warriors but they always failed, so it’s a skill no one but the special ones, can use. Yaxell got a knife and tried to reflect but it was useless, it got through. Yaxell shouted in horror, “NOOOOOOOOO!” After that the Nyans team went back home to the Nyan Cat planet. When they came home they all learn the lesson don’t give up. They lived happily and forever. 51
Kinder 4th Grade 5 The Great Palace and the Fan Eu Jean Ko
In a small poor village, there were knocked- down houses, and the villagers looked penniless. The village was poor because some were so lazy that they did not work. In that village, there was a guy named Manner. He was poor. Manner looked like any other guy you would see on the street, not too skinny, not too fat. He was tall, almost 6 feet tall. Manner was bald and had a black mustache all around his chin. He wore ripped black clothes and had a big red fire tattoo in his arm. Many people liked how he looked, but they did not like his personality. He was always jumping to conclusions. Once day at a coffee shop, he was talking to his closest friend named Richard. Richard said, “Why do you always have to cause problems Manner?” Manner shouted, “How could you say that? You're my best friend!” Before Richard could explain what he was trying to say Manner jolted out the door with a loud sound, BANG!!! After that day they were friends no more. That’s why everybody says Manner is always jumping to conclusions! One day, when he was walking past the grocery store, he saw a TV. On the TV news Manner saw robbers stealing money from a bank. He frowned hard. The next thing he saw on the TV was a beautiful palace. He tried to take a picture of it but he did not have a camera so he tried to remember it with is mind. He wanted to take a picture of it because it was very beautiful. The next day he was afraid and worried that he would forget about the magnificent palace. All day, even at his workshop, he was thinking about the palace. His boss was furious because, Manner was not concentrating on his work. He stomped his foot and shouted, “Do your work!” Manner was scared.
52
When he came back to his house later that evening after work he was thought, “Maybe I could see the great palace again when I see the new again! Then he turned on the TV. He was horrified when he saw the TV screen. He saw robbers and spies standing beside the palace. Manner shouted, “How could he?!?” He saw a familiar guy going inside. He was thinking for a moment, “Wait a minute… that’s the place where... I know where that is! It’s the other village where rich people live!” He ran until his legs were about to collapse. He was exhausted. He’s eyes were full of wonderings. “WOW!” He thought to himself. Then suddenly, he saw the guy tiptoeing, and going inside the palace. He wanted to seek revenge. Manner shouted “WAIT!” The man stopped and turned towards Manner. He took off his black mask. The robber’s face was burning red- orange. Then Manner’s face changed into a burning red orange color. They were both quiet for a moment. “You!” they both said and pointed to one another at the exact same moment. It was Manner’s best friend, Richard. They both were surprised. “Well, forgive me. I don't want to fight with you anymore. I am sorry for wanting revenge.” Richard was saying with a sorry voice. Manner was very mad, but he was also sorry. He knew in his heart he should forgive him. He tried to calm himself. Then he said, “Ok…” They both said sorry to each other and they became friends again! They learned that they should not jump in to conclusion.

Kinder 4th Grade 5 My Only Wish Eunice Kwak “Ding Dong” the clock struck twelve everyone in the house was sound asleep except Annabelle’s little wooden toy, Joey! He had awoken by the stroke of twelve! Joey glanced around the room and started moving. When he realized there was a doll house on the ground beside Annabelle’s bed, he jumped off from her bedside table and started walking to it. When he got there he opened the door and...FLASH! Joey was transported to a dark room filled with mirrors, but in one of the mirrors it was winter and in another mirror it was fall. In the winter mirror the wind of the snowstorm was whooshing out, and in the fall mirror leaves were all around the side of it. It was just then when Joey realized there was a well in the middle of the room. Then he saw that there was a sign and he read it out loud, “This well will grant you one wish.” He looked inside the well but the well looked normal to him. “What do I do?” he thought. Well, he couldn’t just go back, so… “I wish I could become human!” he exclaimed… The next morning when Annabelle woke up she saw Joey wasn’t there. Annabelle was only four years old, so of course she screamed and cried “Aaaaaaaaaa, Joey!” she searched everywhere, under her bed, in her closet, in her shoes, but it was helpless. Suddenly, she heard, “Annabelle? This is John and he is our new neighbor.” Annabelle’s mother was coming into her room with a boy who looked like around Annabelle’s age. “Hi,” John said, in a quiet voice. “Hi,” said Annabelle. Both of them played till dawn, when it was time for Johnny to go, he knew something Annabelle didn’t. John was Joey, but he decided not to tell and went out the door of Annabelle’s house. “Flash!” Joey was back at Annabelle’s bedside table and he was a wooden toy again.

“I hate school the most!” It was the first day of school. I hated going to school. Every recess time I sit on the bench by myself. My friends don’t call me to play together. “I want to rest and play at home,” I sighed as I walked slowly to school. After math class it was recess time. I did not play and just sat on the bench as if I wished to rest at home. I said to myself, “I wish there was no such a thing as sports”. One week later it was morning recess. Recess was the boring time. I sat on the bench again. Suddenly, I heard a voice, “Junho!” I was surprised! I saw Neo calling me once more. He asked me, “Play with us!” I went over. They asked, “Can you play sports? Sports are fun!” I said to Jeremy and Neo, “I will try to play.” I tried soccer. I tried kicking and dribbling at soccer. There was a soccer game. I shouted to Neo and Jeremy, “I will join!” 2 minutes later the soccer game started. Neo had the ball. When I ran to the side of the goal post Neo passed to me. When I got the ball I passed to Jeremy. Jeremy was dribbling. When I went in front of the goal post Jeremy passed to me. It was a chance! I shot the ball very hard to the goal post. SCORE! I was glad I did not miss the shot. Neo, Jeremy, and all my teammates cheered me saying, “You did it!” or “Nice job!” We won 1 to 2. I then decided to like sports! I learned to try things before I say I don’t like it. I was a little bit harsh on myself at first and did not try sports buw t I said it was boring. But now I think it is fun! Next time I need to try something first and then say if it is boring or not.

Natural Stuff Namee Kim ‘Beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep,’ as soon as my dog heard me come back home, he started barking. “Woof, woof, woof!” “Ok, I’m home. Calm down, Waffles.” As soon as I put my foot on the ground… SLIP!!!! CRASH!!! Uh-Oh, I have stepped on Waffles’s pee!!!!! “Oh, Waffles…” I groaned. I looked around and…oh, my gosh!! There was pee and poop all over!! Waffles trotted over and licked my face. It seemed like he was saying, “Are you ok?” “Silly Waffles, no one can stop you,” I sighed. I hopped with one foot over to the bathroom and washed my foot and hands. During the meantime, Waffles stood next to me, eyes sparkling. After, I tried to scold Waffles but he was so cute that I couldn't scold him. “Ok. Only for today, Waffles.” I changed my clothes and went to bring the towel. I splashed, scrubbed, and wiped for the next 1 hour and 30 minutes. After, I went to read on the sofa. “Woof, Woof, Woof, Woof, Woof” I tried my best to read but Waffles was too loud and I couldn't concentrate. At first, I didn't know why Waffles was barking so much. Next, I saw that Waffles was standing next to his leash. I stood up and went close to the leash and Waffles barked even harder. “WOOF, WOOF, WOOF, WOOF, WOOF!!” Finally, I understood what Waffles was meaning. “Ok, Waffles. I get what you mean.” I put the book down and got the leash. I buckled it on Waffles. Waffles drug me to the door. “Wait, Waffles, I need to get my coat and phone!!” Waffles stopped and stood still. I took a deep breath. “hhhhhh….Ok, Waffles. Good job. Stay there.” I let go of the leash and went back in. I opened my closet and took out my light coat. (Because to walk Waffles, you would have to run VERY fast and it would be VERY hot, even during winter.) Next, I found my phone on the table. I went out the front door. Waffles was asleep. “Oh!” I thought. I decided to leave him alone. I went back in, took of my coat and went to read. About 30 minutes later, I fell asleep too.

Flaming orange, bright yellow, dark red. My heart lies where it goes that sun that lights my day is gone that sun that cheers me up, that sun that lights my mood, when the hour of darkness come in, I find that this is the time my preparations are done. Now I face the journey I have to go through the damp darkness and brutal cold. The darkness gloomily seeps in, And I find winter has come. I am alone in the darkness On the cold and chilly winter nights. There are only silence and dread. I walk the place where once was joy But now it’s replaced with sorrow. I walk through the hidden, where once was life But now, it is a place of abandoned. I’ll no longer stay in the cold thin air. For I know that spring will come.

Kinder 5th Grade 5 Safe in the Night Charissa Kim
Were you ever afraid of the dark? Have you ever had the terrible feeling that monsters are lurking under your bed? Some people, like me, might have had those feelings when they were young. But actually, there really isn’t anything to fear. You know why? Well, when you sleep every night, there are guards that keep you safe and watch over you. Actually, they guide you in the daytime, too. Do you know who these amazing guards are? They are A-N-G-E-L-S. Angels. Of course, you most likely would not see white figures flying in the night sky. Believe me, they are always watching you. Why? Because they love you, and God loves you too. Its amazing how its all connected together because the angels that warned Joseph to not bring baby Jesus to King Herod are sent by God. When I was little, (and even sometimes these days) I liked to think about how the angels would really guide you through the night. Sometimes in the night, I start to have negative thoughts that make me feel scared. The thought of the angels really helped me when I was small in Boston, to fight away my fear for darkness. I thought of these comforting thoughts, and that’s how I started my picture and finished it like that - with an angel in the sunset, watching over us. Next time you lay in your bed, think about how the angels of God will keep you safe. That way you won’t have to worry about nightmares or the storms that rage on some nights. Just think about how much God loves you and how He and His angels are watching. This is how I ended up with my picture. This is what my silhouette picture means.

5th 1st Grade Dark Village Jeany Park I’m looking for a village. This village looks dark but always bright, has haunted buildings but joyful people, broken windows but fine colors, a lot of mean people, but a greater number of kind people. The Opposite-Color Dimension Elliot Paik YOU ARE HERE. It is 2021 A.D., and you are reading the news at 7:45 in the morning. It’s early on Saturday, and things seem very normal. You have finished reading an article based on “History Until the Present.” Then you get nearly dumbfounded by the next page. You read an article about the discovery of another dimension. It is known as “The Opposite-Color Dimension.” This dimension is very different from ours and changes the look of everything. In this dimension, colors become absorbed into the background, leaving the surfaces of things nearly white. For example, if you had an apple, it would lose its color and turn white, and the air around it would become red. It has been three years since you were surprised by such news. You continue reading until the end. When you’re done reading the article, you feel slightly confused. You think, “What’s up with this dimension?” At the end of the article, it says to watch the news at 8:00 AM. “There will be experiments of bringing things to the other dimension.” You finish watching the news and do your weekend homework. You remember what the news said about items being brought into that dimension. The background is very colorful, but the items lose their color. It sounds familiar to you somehow. Then, you look up at a picture you drew from 5th grade, in 2014. You realize that you have predicted the future. The gaze of excitement falls upon you.

Some nights we would sit on the porch And watch the stars gleam Some nights we would walk through the beach And look at the waves dance Some nights we would lay on the grass And see the moon glisten And on some nights we would stay home Cause there’s nothing better than staying in to cuddle But on some nights we wouldn’t do anything And the house would be quiet And everything would be boring And we stay in our rooms Doing nothing I assume But I have to say, I miss those nights When all the stars are in our sight But that was very long ago Now all I see is full of smoke So that I have no more stars to see And that has surely taken all my glee How much I want to see the sights again The swishing and swashing of each little wave The gleaming and glowing of each and every star And the radiant glow of the big, bright moon How much I wish to see the views again

I broke the stems off The flowers are now mine I pluck off the petals and order them in a line They blow away Soon spring ends then comes May The flowers droop down no longer fresh green To the side they lean Look to the side and open up your eyes wide A new bed of flowers lay And there they’ll stay

I walk to the field
Soon I feel rain drops;
full of flowers.
I run under a roof.
Excitement tingles in my mind,
I feel grumpy that I can’t go out.
to see all the flowers.
But the flowers look gleeful as they take a shower.
The air is filled with sweet scents
Soon the rain goes away,
Then I spot a flower
but a fog shimmers like a mist.
that looks so different!
I go through the fog to see the flower.
It is a green one
It is more radiant
that looks so small.
with rain drops that looks like silver marbles on the leafs!
Not many bees
It stands out in the middle of the bush
around that flower.
like a shining jewel.
It looks so lonely,
I have a big smile on my face
so I stay with it.
relived that the flower doesn’t look lonely anymore as I walk home happily.

West is the best
Lots of people inviting and welcoming
Mountains, stars, and the rest
Joyful nights
Peaceful animals and lots of cacti
Cool evenings to talk and play
No cars, few towns Sweating
There is more wild than the north, east, and south
Warm Breezes
You see the sun go down beautifully and the stars come out twinkling
Sand
And see the sunrise in the morning with your own two eyes
Hot
And hear the wolf or coyote howl gently at the full moon
And
The west is blessed

Whoosh came the wind from the sea. There once lived a teenager named Jake. And he lived by himself near the sea. He felt calm listening to the waves approaching. “I wonder how the sea looks when the sun sets,” Jake thought to himself. “And I would ask my...” said Jake out loud this time. But, he didn’t say the last word. Because it was the word parents. But, his parents died. Because of a car accident. Jake kind of started to cry. He felt bad. He is living alone, now. He felt lonely. Very lonely. “5pm. Then I would go out to the sea myself…” said Jake to himself, looking in the mirror. It was 4:45pm when he said that. He wanted time to go by really fast. Other people would just go out and wait till it was time. But, he didn’t like to really show himself to a lot of people. So he had to wait and wait. That day, Jake kind of felt like he got a little too hairy and his teeth were getting sharper and sharper. He wanted the clock to turn to 5pm fast. He prayed and prayed. “Jeez…” said Jake. “Ten more minutes now,” said Jake. Ten minutes later… “Finally!” shouted Jake. Then he changed as fast as possible. It only took him one minute to change. Usually he took ten minutes to change. But, this time he didn’t want to waste a lot of time. He felt like that was the best day ever, ever since his parents left. He didn’t want to be lonely anymore. Then when he was done changing he ran out of the house like a bird that just got freed from its cage. He felt so free for some reason.
72
It usually took him five to seven minutes to get to the sea. But this time he ran, so it only took him about three minutes to go to the sea. He just couldn’t wait till the sun started to set. At about 5:25pm, the sun kind of started to set. But, you couldn’t really notice. Because it didn't go that low. It was 5:41pm when the sun was really setting. Jake’s mouth dropped open. Because he was waiting for this time for the whole time. “Oh my gosh!” yelled Jake. People were looking at him as if he was crazy. People were looking at him. People were walking by. Then about eight minutes later nobody was there exact him. Then something happened. He felt stiffer than before. He suddenly started to shine. Then something happened. Something amazing happened. The sky started to darken up for some reason. He ran up to the sea. The sun was halfway down. Then Jake started to turn hairy. Then he started to have sharp fangs. Then he noticed that he was turning into a werewolf. “Heeh~” Jake made a noise. Then he knew he was a person that changes into a werewolf when the sun sets. And it was his first day as a monster. From then on he would turn into a werewolf when the sun sets. And he promised to himself, “I will never let anybody know my secret.” He walked to the sea, and every time it was May sixth, he would go to the sea and would celebrate how many years he had lived as a werewolf.

Everyone else was chatting, so I made a choice to go and sit next to him. So I stood up, and when I was just about to grab my tray I heard, “What you doing, E2? You know that you can’t do that,” Zang Fox said in a snakey way. “Who are you, haaa!” I replied back to Zang Fox. He was the school bully. Although he was weak in the school gang, he was strong as a bully. Then he tightened his fist for a brawl. But then... Bakku, the gang fighter - the school turf winner and the strongest fighter in school, burnt a line that blocked Zang Fox and me. “You two better quit fighting or I’ll burn you two up. Got me?” “Yes, sir!!!” both of us replied because we were frightened. But as he left - woosh - Zang Fox punched me and missed. As I dodged, five delinquents threw a hand at me and thud, I fell. As I fell, kicks and punches came at me but I was only jabbed twice. I tried to leave, but one of them got the trash can and stuck me in it. A moment later the freshman I was going to sit with came to me. His name was Takashi Tomo, and he and I then became friends.
74
The next day, the delinquents started to bully me full time. First, they destroyed my locker. Then they messed up my chemistry mixing potion and - wham - the whole chemistry class smelled like burnt rubber. Now the saddest one of all was how they screamed my secrets from long ago, as well as my present secrets. And then the charmer-delinquent took my secret admirer for his own. I lost it. I called Bakku, explained the situation, and he and I and the freshman, Takasi Tomo, planned to bring a freshman - Katzu - the next day at lunch. We waited at lunch. As Katzu sat by himself the bullies crowded in front of him. “Hey trash! Who do you think you are sitting at our table? Now beat it before we knock the pimples off of you.” They threw his lunch on Katzu’s face. “Hey Zang Fox!” I yelled, as I signaled the other guys hiding in the lunch crowd. And - woosh - yogurt landed on Zang Fox’s face. Then more food came at him, and more people joined in. When lunch was over, the bullies were covered with food. And the bullies stopped bullying.
* A note from the author: Don’t do this to bullies, as it will cause war. This is just saying that you all should be an upstander when this thing happens. (But not throwing food.)

Out The Human Window Joan Kim Once there lived a mouse named Lucky. He had just moved into the Ollivanders’ attic. Lucky thought, “The Ollivanders are so stupid. They are stupid enough to not notice a mouse has just moved into their attic. But they were still very nice to make the attic almost empty for me.” But luckily Lucky found an empty shoebox in the middle of the attic. Lucky always had great ideas, and he had another: he could use the shoebox as his house! He had also always complained that humans’ feet are big, which makes them easier to step on him, but this time it helped him because the shoebox was really big and made his house bigger. “Mama, good night,” a girl’s very soft voice came from under the attic, almost silently. “Sleep tight, hon. The big day is near,” Mrs. Ollivander replied. Lucky started settling down his stuff that he brought from where I had lived before with my family. Now that he was living alone, away from his family’s huge house, and came here to the Ollivanders’ attic, he had freedom in all the things he couldn’t have done with his mom always watching him. He could stay up late at night and steal stuff from the humans by himself. But tonight he didn’t want to go find food because we had a party before I moved from our house because he was leaving and he ate like a ton for lunch. So he took out my stuff from his paper bag that his mom found once fell out. First came out a long and sharp needle that his mom said to use to protect himself at nighttime. He can use the sharp part of the needle to cut the windows out for my house. With the needle tight in his hand, he went outside of his house through the door which was the top of the shoebox house. he took a look around his house to find the perfect place to make the window. Once he turned to the third corner he had he saw a human size window. The height of the window was like as high as about 11 of him standing straight. Throughout the window was a sunset showing the silhouettes of
76
5th 1st Grade buildings. On the very left stood a proud looking city hall and next to it was a tall skyscraper that was far away so it looked very short and fat. In the middle showed two short buildings and at the right part of the window stood a building with a round dome that had like a big rectangle ish nose looking part on the building. It was the first outside view he had ever saw in his whole entire life. It was beautiful. Lucky chose to make the window where he could see the human window while in bed. With the end part of his needle, he scored the thick cardboard. Then he got ready and set hit and punched the place where he had scored. With a bit of noise, his window was made. He hopped right back into his house and brought his bed next to the window so he could see that view before sleeping. He made his bed with a ripped of pillow of humans’ that was just his size.

The next day, Lucky went exploring while Mr. Ollivander went to work the Ollivander kid went to a school and Mrs. Ollivander went out to meet her friends at the airport. he walked( actually rolled, because the stairs were higher than his height) down the stairs from the attic to the ground. The first room was the kid’s. In her room were pictures of herself and her names on sheet of papers written in different fonts. It read Jess, some others read Jessica. her name was Jessica Ollivander. Lucky was kind of lonely already in the second day after I moved in. Should he be friends with Jessica Ollivander? Tonight he’ll sneak up into her room and ask her. It was 10 pm he would go ask her. He rolled down the stair again very quietly. She seemed to turn every 7 seconds under her sheets. Lucky squeaked at her and she sat up and shook her head as if she was trying to see where the sound was coming from. Then she saw me. I saw her stare at me and I did the same. Then Lucky quickly said hi and she replied by starting a conversation Lucky never heard of. She said that she had a magical power to move into places that she imagined anytime she wanted and came back to just before the second she went there already. The power Jessica had was really interesting Lucky. Then he told her about his story how he had moved in yesterday and saw the view out the window. Then Jessica offered to bring Lucky to the place you can really see the view Lucky loved. Lucky was so thankful. They couldn’t go upstairs to Lucky’s house to show Jessica the view because that would make too much noise and her parents will know. So Lucky just explained the whole view to Jessica, so detailed. After a while Jessica closed her eyes putting me in her pocket and after a second she pulled me back out. I saw that view out. It was once again awesome. The next morning was a Saturday Mrs. Ollivander said to Jessica, “ Remember the big day Jessica? Tomorrow is moving day so say bye to your friends and pack your own special stuff in this bag. I was shocked If Jessica was moving all the Ollivanders are moving and if they move then I'll die after a few days I moved in! Lucky made a big decision to move from this house too and go with the Ollivanders since he had made a friend Jessica. Lucky never had any friends and Jessica, a human was the first one. He didn’t want to lose her the third day he met her. Tonight will be the last night to see that view. Than Lucky had a great idea. He can draw the silhouette on the paper and the sunset so he can remember and see it all the time! Lucky asked Jessica if he can borrow her little black and white sheet of papers pastel and pencil. First he made the sunset with the red, dark orange, orange, pink, brown colored pastels and next drew the building on the window at the black paper. Then cut out and stick the black silhouette it on the white sheet of paper. He had made his first drawing of the view out the human window.

Kinder 5th Grade 5 The City of Darkness Lauren Cho
Lily entered the airplane drenched with tears from crying. She had to go to the City of Darkness and no one ever dared to go there, but Lily had no choice. Her parents needed her to go and live a longer life because buildings were collapsing and dams were breaking. Lily didn’t want to go and separate from her parents, and she wanted them to survive, too. “Don’t worry. We will go, too, but we will go later. You have to get to safety first,” her parents said while Lily disappeared into the airplane, still crying. As the plane took off, Lily stared out of the window in horror. Buildings were falling on people, water was everywhere making people not be able to breath. As the night came the moon showed up bright and big, but then the moon suddenly turned black and the buildings turned black. There wasn’t a single bit of light. “Why did…what happened...how can the pilot see? Will we crash?” Lily was curious and scared, but then like in the stories she was told, this was the sign at night that they had came in the City of Darkness. As soon as the airplane landed with a “thud” people started to leave, but Lily didn’t. She wanted to stay on the plane. Lily just sat there staring in front of her, but there was nothing to see. The seats disappeared as the passengers went off the airplane, so there was nothing to see. Then the lights went out. Lily ran out of the airplane without thought. She went

wherever her feet took her. The outside was very cold and Lily wanted to get inside the airport and find her parents. She couldn’t see anything, but she could hear perfectly. But now she only heard her footsteps. It was not normal to hear nothing. Just then she heard a “thud”, and three more. She wondered what the sound was, but then she figured out that four airplanes had landed. Lily became less worried, thinking her parents were on one of the planes. Suddenly, at the corner of a building, light could be seen. She ran in the building as fast as she could and tried to find her parents, but as the gates closed Lily couldn’t find her parents and the city went dark again. Lily waited and waited and waited. She wondered if her parents came were still in the destroyed city. She started to get worried. “What if my parents don’t survive?” Lily started to cry. She cried for hours and hours. But then she stopped crying when the speaker said, “The gates are opening, please look carefully. We don’t have any light.” She tried to find her parents again and hope that they would come out. When the last of the group was coming out Lily tried to see clearly in the crowd and then she heard someone call, “Lily! Where are you?” The light could be seen at the corner of the same building Lily saw when she got off the plane. Lily spotted her parents and ran toward them. Then the sky turned all different colors, but the moon and the buildings were still all dark. Just then Lily figured out why the sky changed dark to light and back to dark, and the sky stayed lit forever. The city’s name was changed to The City of Brightness.

My First Friend Sally Pak
When I was younger, my mother sent me away to camps in the summer. All the time. I was ten when I had to go to an overnight camp. My mother knew how I didn’t have any friends and she wanted me to get to know one. Each year, I moved to a different neighborhood because of my father’s work. So I never had time to make a friend, and when I finally found one I would move away and have to make another. One year, when I was in second grade, my class went on a field trip and we had to choose our partners. I really wanted to be with a boy named Alex. He was the most popular kid in second grade. His parents were rich and he had his own great trampoline and swimming pool. He wasn’t mean but he was a spoiled kid. I thought he would be a great kid to get to know better. He’d been in this school for two years and he had a girlfriend. Yes, a real one. Well, seriously, they were just friends and one day, they had a sleepover together. Anyways, back to the field trip partners, well of course he didn’t want to be with me. I was always quiet and never participated a single time in my time there. Alex ended up being partners with his best friend, who was also named Alex. That was the worst year of my life! So, when I was ten, on the second week of summer vacation, my mom and I went out to shop for my overnight camp.

5th 1st Grade “Mom, can I just go to a day camp?” I asked her. “Joshua, you have to try being braver and make a friend. Please,” she told me. “Mom, you see… I can’t make friends and it’s all your fault!” I shouted and stormed out of the mall. That night, after shopping - mom shopped for everything - we started to pack. Mom bought a duffel bag, sleeping bag, and a pack. She also bought some new clothes. I was still kind of mad at her for not helping me make some friends. “How many we…” I asked. “Two weeks,” Mom interrupted. “Mom, I’m sorry.” “It’s fine Josh. I just want to help you, but Dad can’t find a place to work permanently,” mom murmured. At supper, Mom and I just sat quietly and ate, but dad didn’t know what was happening. “Why aren’t you guys talking? I heard Joshie is going to a camp tomorrow,” Dad said confused. “Again,” I thought. The next day, I awoke at 5 a.m. and couldn’t go back to sleep. I was so nervous about sleeping far away from my parents. I never spent a night without my parents because I never had any friends to have a sleepover. I went downstairs and saw that all my things were packed and ready to go at the entrance of the house. I went into the kitchen where mom was cooking some bacon for breakfast. At first she didn’t notice me but then she turned around and said, “Goodness! I didn’t even know you were here! Go and change your clothes and…” I couldn’t hear the rest. I was thinking about what to ask her about camp. “Mom, why didn’t you just sign me up for a day camp this year?” I whined. “Honey, your father and I are going to fly to London while you are away to find a new job. Sorry, Joshie. That was our only choice,” Mom said sadly. “Why can’t you guys just find a job in Virginia. Or at least somewhere in America? Mom, I can’t take this anymore. Please help me make one friend.” Josh’s parents were moving constantly since Josh turned ten. They were away often and Josh had to stay with his grandparents a lot of times. “Have a great two weeks!” mom called out to me on the bus to the camp. I was so nervous my heart was thumping a mile a minute. I set my bags in front of my feet and looked at the other children boarding the bus. Suddenly a boy with blonde hair and with two duffel bags hopped on a seat right next to me. “Hi! I’m Ronald and I’m ten years old. I’m from London. I always come here for the summer,” the boy said in a British accent. “Hi! I’m Joshua and you can call me Josh,” I told him. “By the way, did you know that our campsite is in the Bitten Mountains? Also it has the brightest moon and stars in the world!” “No. Why are the mountains called that?” “My mother told me that long time ago in the legends, the moon was so bright and so close to the sun that it burned the tip of the mountain. And another legend I read said that a giant was so hungry that he bit off a part of the mountain because there was no food at all.” “Cool! Do you have any friends in your school in London? I might move to London because of my dad’s work.” “Great! So we can be friends! And actually, I don’t have any friends, too.” So this is how I made my first friend and we always stayed together at camp. And when I came back home, my mom told me we had to move, and I didn’t mind. I had made my first friend!

Korean Language Arts Class World Map by Korean KAL Class
Please join me in congratulating these great Korean authors. Here are a few selections of the student's work; they include illustrated poems, parody poetry, persuasive writing and creative children’s stories – all of which were submitted to the annual Korean writing contest. This contest is a wonderful opportunity to highlight the incredible talent and creativity of our Korean Language Arts students. Furthermore, this world map is one of the symbolic works in KAL class. It is hard to learn the foreign language, and yet they have done a remarkable job. In order to keep true to our mission of helping our students bridge the gap between the East and West, our Korean program aims for the level of proficiency that would help our students to move easily between Korean and other cultures. For Mrs. Kwon, Ms. Chang and Ms. Kong, and myself, the reward for our Korean teachers is seeing the immense growth our students are making through their hard work and effort. We are extremely proud of our elementary school and our elementary school students. All of APIS elementary students are really awesome and outstanding, and they have already begun to be global leaders. Thank you very much! Emily Kim Korean Department Chair
