API offers study abroad programs year-round in 18 countries, in 40 cities. Programs can be as long as a full academic year or as short as two weeks. With a wide variety of courses offered in almost every major discipline and in various languages of instruction, it is easy for students to find a program that suits their academic interests. While courses are available in English in many locations, if foreign language acquisition is the primary goal, API offers high-quality language and culture programs for all levels of language learners.

All API students take courses at a partner institution or university based in their host country, rather than at a center just for API students. API university and institutional partners are either fully accredited foreign universities or institutes with U.S. schools of record.

API prides itself on the services and features it includes in its program costs so as to minimize out-of-pocket expenses for students on-site. API programs are designed to offer students a complete study abroad experience. The cost of an API program includes more than just tuition and housing. Exciting overnight and day excursions, academic and cultural support and resources, mobile phones, medical and life insurance, as well as social and cultural events are included in the cost of the program. For most programs, the main out-of-pocket expenses are the cost of the international flight and daily spending money for travel and meals. Additionally, once a student is accepted into an API program and quoted a program price, it will not change. With API, a student can accomplish more for less money!

Studying abroad is a very exciting process, but also one that leads to many questions. API Program Managers and other U.S.-based staff are knowledgeable and readily available to assist students throughout the pre-departure process and into their session abroad. Once abroad, on-site API directors support students through the cultural transition process, provide academic support and guidance and serve as a source of reference both for everyday questions and emergencies. Whether the concern relates to academics, housing or daily life abroad, API strives to provide students with as much practical advice and guidance as possible. 7

Ad v i s i n g API staff members guide students through the administrative processes of the pre-departure phase of study abroad. Students and parents may contact API staff as often as they desire with questions about academics, on-site logistics, special needs, visa procedures, etc. API staff members, in turn, are frequently in touch with students regarding program updates, essential travel tips and recommendations for having a successful experience abroad.

All applicants have access to the @api online student account. This online system allows students to complete and check the status of their application, download and complete application and post-acceptance forms, and verify that payments have been credited to their account.

Orientation Material s and Resources All API students receive orientation materials to help them prepare for their study abroad session. API students have access to a unique online service, the API Toolbox, which includes orientation materials, diagnostic exams, and language reviews. The Toolbox includes information on logistical details, cultural differences, what students can expect at their host university, health and safety concerns, travel tips and more. All API students receive a free phone with discounted calling packages. With these cell phones, parents, API Resident Directors, family and friends at home and abroad can communicate with students and more easily contact them in the event of an emergency. When in the host country, incoming calls are free for students. Outgoing calls incur a per minute charge, and text messages also carry a fee per text.

Mentors

The API Peer Mentors are former API students who are available to speak to future API students about their program of interest. Peer Mentors have completed extensive training sessions with API and can answer questions students may have about the student experience.

Recep tion

API students are met at the airport by API staff on the program start date. Students receive detailed flight instructions upon their acceptance into the API program and should wait to purchase a flight until receiving more information post-acceptance.

R e s id e n t D i r e c t o r s API has highly qualified, trained and experienced English-speaking Resident Directors available to students throughout their session abroad. Most Resident Directors are locals from the host country in which students will be studying and all are ready to provide practical information and insight into the host culture. Our Resident Directors greet students at the airport, introduce students to the ways of life in their host country, help students to register at the host university and support students throughout their stay. They are available in case of any personal emergency and are ready to implement the API emergency response plans if needed.

Orientation

The on-site orientation takes place during the first week of a student’s stay. API orientations include tours of the city as well as practical information about life in the host city, including transportation, safety and local culture. The orientation is designed to minimize adjustment difficulties upon arrival and gives students a chance to get to know other participants in the program.

Housing Housing is included in the API program fee. Depending on the host city, students may choose from various housing options, including apartments or student dormitories. Students can request single rooms on their housing form for an additional cost, although some sites may have guaranteed single rooms as part of the program fee. A $250 security deposit is due by the final payment deadline for all programs. A fee of $75 will be retained from all security deposits to cover standard cleaning fees and general maintenance fees, including minor repairs and standard touch-up painting. The remaining $175 is refundable provided that: 1) no additional fees are assessed on-site for incidentals, damages or excessive utility usage; and 2) the API program fee has been paid in full. Housing for all year students during the period between the fall and spring semesters is not included in the API program fee. Most students take advantage of this time to return home to the U.S. or to travel around their host country. In most cases, API can arrange between-term housing for students in their host city for an additional fee. Tui t i o n All programs include a fixed number of credits per term as part of the standard fee. The number of credits that a student can earn each session is detailed on each program page, and varies from 12-16 credit per semester session and 3-6 credits per summer session.

Insur ance

Medical and life insurance is provided for all students during the program term. The coverage includes medical evacuation and repatriation, as well as 24-hour support services for medical issues.

Ex c u r s i o n s During the program, students have the opportunity to broaden their classroom education through several organized excursions, which are included in the price of the program. Overnight lodging, breakfast, entrance fees and transportation to and from the excursion locations are included. Excursions are subject to change depending on availability, weather and other factors.

Students are offered monthly API-sponsored social and cultural activities, including outings to movies, concerts, theater performances, museums, cultural tours and more. All entrance fees are covered by API. Students also enjoy welcome and farewell group meals.

Volunteer

Opp o r t u n i t i e s

Organized by API staff in many locations, the API Gives Back Project may consist of an ongoing volunteer opportunity or a one-day commitment. The goal of the project is to help API students express their thanks for the welcome they received from the local community.

T r a n s c r ip t Upon completion of the academic session, an official transcript with a letter of translation (if necessary) is sent to each student’s home institution. Peer Mentors serve as resources for outbound students, participating in their home school’s study abroad fair, serving as a study abroad advocate, giving presentations to student groups and the community at large, and helping API to keep its predeparture information relevant and student-focused. Upon completion of their year of service, Peer Mentors may apply for an internship with API, a great résumé builder. API awards approximately $400,000 annually in both need and merit-based scholarships. Visit the API website for more information on scholarship requirements, deadlines, and additional funding resources. Key API scholarship opportunities include:

general scholarship The API General Scholarship offers awards that range from $250-$800 per term.

first generation scholarship The API First Generation Scholarship offers one deserving first generation college student a $750 award for a semester or academic year program.

S.T.E.M. Scholarship The API S.T.E.M. Scholarship supports one deserving student on a semester or academic year program who is majoring in the science, technology, engineering or mathematics fields with a $750 award.

benjamin a. gilman award The Gilman Scholarship Program offers awards for undergraduate study abroad, and was established by the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000. This scholarship provides awards for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study abroad programs worldwide. Students participating on an API program who have been awarded a Gilman scholarship will be eligible to receive up to $1,000 in matching contributions from API. To receive this funding, Gilman winners should submit their offer letters or other proof of the award. Students who are awarded another API scholarship will receive a total of $1,000 between the scholarship and the Gilman matching award.

API students have the option to purchase the API Program Withdrawal Safeguard (PWS) as financial protection in case of an unanticipated event that requires withdrawal from an API program prior to departure. More information on PWS (including deadlines for enrollment, exclusions, and corresponding fees) can be found on the API website and is provided to students post-acceptance.

Fi n a n c i a l a id a n d s c h o l a r s h ip s from your home institution API is happy to accept institutional and federal financial aid that is processed by the studentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s home university. Students who plan on using financial aid toward the cost of the study abroad session should meet with their schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s financial aid office EARLY! All students, even those who are not currently receiving financial aid, are encouraged to meet with financial aid representatives at their home university to determine eligibility for scholarships, grants, or loans available during the study abroad semester. Some students are even eligible to increase the amount of their financial aid award based on the comparative cost of living abroad. API signs consortium agreements as necessary to ensure that financial aid can be applied to the API program cost.

T a l k t o a s t ud y a b r o a d a d v i s o r a t h o m e Each U.S. university sets its own guidelines regarding how it accepts credit from abroad. All API program participants are advised to discuss credit transfer policies with their home university. API strongly recommends that students obtain pre-approval for coursework abroad whenever possible and speak with their study abroad advisor to obtain the necessary paperwork. Students should also take an advisorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s contact information with them abroad, in the event that course offerings change once on-site. An official transcript from the accredited U.S. or foreign institution with an English translation (as needed) is sent to the registrar or study abroad advisor upon each studentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s successful completion of a program.

Students will enjoy exploring the massive complex containing over 1000 rooms, temples, and gardens. The Forbidden City was declared a World Heritage Site in 1987, and is listed by UNESCO as the largest collection of preserved ancient wooden structures in the world. ti a n a nmen

s qu a r e s prin g • fall Tiananmen Square is the name of a massive public square (the 3rd largest in the world) in the center of Beijing, opposite the tomb of Mao Zedong, the Forbidden City, the National Museum, and a number of Chinese government buildings. It has seen many important public events over the years (most recently known for protests in 1989). Chinese today prefer to focus on the square as a symbol of unity and a gathering place for locals and tourists alike.

The wall was built to keep out invading groups from the north and west, including the Mongols (to varying degrees of success). s prin g • fall Situated on the estuary of the Yangtze River, Shanghai serves as the most influential economic, financial, cultural, and technological center in East China. In addition to its modernization, Shanghai’s multicultural flair endows the city with a unique glamor. Here one finds the perfect blend of cultures; the modern and the traditional, the western and eastern. Students will enjoy touring the modern Pudong district with its skyscrapers, the fashionable Bund district, the French concession, and the nearby water villages of Suzhou and Zhouzhaung.

` fall The capital of Shaanxi province, Xi’an is best known as home to the Terracotta Army of Emperor Qin Shi Huang, and as the eastern terminus of the famous Silk Road. Students will enjoy walking the wellpreserved ancient city walls, and visiting the many local temples and hot springs. While Xi’an has a proud historical tradition, it is modernizing along with the rest of China, becoming a key cultural and economic center for the country. The city hosts numerous research and development, national security, and space exploration agencies and facilities.

INTERNSHIP ADD-ON – FALL AND SPRING A credit-bearing internship (2-3 credits) is available for students upon completion of their academic program. The capital of the People’s Republic of China, Beijing has a long and storied history dating back over 3 millennia. It has served as the nerve center of China through several imperial dynasties, the Republican era, and the founding of the People’s Republic, and it continues to be one of the most important geopolitical centers in the world. Home to the Chinese central government, ancient temples and palaces such as the Forbidden City, old “hutongs “(old neighborhoods gentrified into shopping and dining hotspots), and a gateway city to the Great Wall, there is never a shortage of cultural activities to enjoy. Beijing is also an intellectual capital of China, hosting dozens of the countries top universities and research centers.

HAN G Z HO U Hangzhou is the capital of Zhejiang Province and the largest city of Eastern China, with a registered population of 8.7 million people. Hangzhou was founded during the Qin Dynasty as Qiantang County. In AD 589, the city was renamed “Hangzhou”, literally meaning “River-ferrying Prefecture”, and a city wall was constructed two years later. It is listed as one of the Seven Ancient Capitals of China. A core city of the Yangtze River Delta, Hangzhou is located on the Hangzhou Bay, 180 kilometers southwest of Shanghai that gives it economic power. It has been one of the most renowned and prosperous cities of China for over 1,000 years, due in part to its beautiful natural scenery. One of Hangzhou’s most popular sights is the West Lake, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Adjacent to the lake is a scenic area where one can observe historical pagodas, cultural sites, as well as the natural beauty of the lake and hills.

NANJ I N G Nanjing is the capital of Jiangsu province and has a prominent place in Chinese history and culture, having been the capital of China on several occasions. Nanjing has long been a national center of education, research, transport networks, and tourism. With an urban population of over six million, Nanjing is the second-largest commercial center in the East China region after Shanghai. As one of the four ancient capitals of China, Nanjing has always been a cultural center attracting intellectuals from all over the country. In the Tang and Song dynasties, Nanjing was a place where poets gathered and composed poems reminiscent of its luxurious past; during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the city was the official imperial examination center for the Jiangnan region, again acting as a hub where different thoughts and opinions converged and thrived. Today, with a long cultural tradition and strong support from local educational institutions Nanjing is commonly viewed as a “city of culture” and one of the most pleasant cities to live in China. Students will visit the ancient city wall, the mausoleum of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, and the Jiming old temple.

SHAO X I N G Located on the south bank of the Qiantang River estuary and built in B.C. 490, Shaoxing’s waterside landscapes and legacies associated with famous people make it a unique tourism city of China. From social reformers like Lu Xun to wistful poets sipping Shaoxing’s famed yellow rice wine on the banks of lazy streams as they composed lyrical dances, Shaoxing’s history is that of China’s cultural heritage founded 2,500 years ago. Shaoxing is described as “a museum without walls.”

API students at Qatar University (QU) choose from a range of undergraduate classes open to international and Qatari students. Due to a recent decree by the Qatari Supreme Education Council, a majority of programs are now taught in Arabic. For students to participate in these programs, they must be fluent/native Arabic speakers*. There are, however, still several subjects offering instruction in English (listed on the following page).

Not all courses are offered every semester or every year. The course selection may vary, and no course is guaranteed. Some courses may have prerequisites, and some courses may require minimal additional fees for labs, equipment, etc. Instruction is conducted separately for male and female students, and some courses and/or disciplines may not be open to both sexes. Registration takes place upon arrival; however, we recommend that (after consulting the API website for course listings), students have 10 courses approved by their home university prior to departure, in order to allow for scheduling conflicts and the possible unavailability of certain classes. The fall semester at Qatar University starts later than the average fall semester in the United States, and as such, the fall semester does not end until mid-to-late January. Classes are held during the month of January, followed by final exams. ORIENTATION period Students in Doha arrive one to two weeks prior to the start of classes to participate in a comprehensive orientation program. I N T E R N AT I O N A L EXCU R S I O N Abu Dhabi is the capital and largest of the United Arab Emirates. It is a place of enormous wealth thanks to its oil reserves, but it is also a region with an eye towards sustainable economic and environmental development. Students may visit the most expensive hotel ever constructed in the world, walk along the seaside Corniche, or tour Saadiyat Island (home to international museums such as the Louvre, Guggenheim, and others) and Yas Island (home to a world-class racetrack, yacht club, and Ferrarri World). On this day trip, students will venture out of Qatar’s capital and travel to Qatar’s second city, Al Khor. Historically a fishing village, Al Khor is home to a great deal of Qatar’s oil and gas industry, but still retains traces of its seafaring heritage. Students will visit a local fish market and the oldest mosque in Qatar (400+ years) on a picturesque beach.

The day will continue with a visit to a camel and falcon farm, where students may have the opportunity to visit these iconic Middle Eastern creatures. From there, the journey concludes at Zubara Fort and archaeological site. The fort itself played a key role in a conflict against Bahrain in the early 20th century, and nearby rests the remains of Qatar’s original capital, Zubara, which is currently being excavated.

This excursion gives students the chance to relax, unwind, and enjoy the warm Arab Gulf waters off the coast of Doha. Students will take a Dhow ride to a private island, where they will enjoy swimming, water sports, and an Arab barbecue!

Going on a desert safari is an excursion that cannot be missed - a virtual rite of passage in the Gulf culture. Riding across the sands and dunes of Qatar toward the Saudi border, students will get a sense of the grandeur of the desert landscape. The group will experience amazing food, splash in the waters of the Arabian Gulf, and perhaps even ride a camel!

I N T E R N AT I O N A L EXCU R S I O N The 2nd largest Emirate, Dubai, shatters the stereotypes of Eastern and Western cultures while simultaneously and relatively seamlessly mixing them together. The pace of development in Dubai is breathtaking, and the urban (and coastal) landscapes are constantly changing. Students may have the opportunity to tour some of the opulent malls (and snow ski in one!) as well as the traditional souqs along Dubai Creek (such as the Gold Souq, the Spice Souq, and others). Whether riding a traditional abra (boat) across the creek or the new state-of-the-art metro system, students will be able to experience this exciting city in many ways. There is no better way to top off a day in Dubai than to ride the elevator to the 124th floor observation deck of the Burj Khalifa (the world’s tallest skyscraper) and see the city spread out below, as well as the Palm Jumeirah and The World archipelago island developments. Sharjah provides an interesting contrast to Dubai. This 3rd largest Emirate has a more traditional population, and gives the visitor a different perspective of Emirati life. Sharjah is also home to API’s program in the UAE, and Qatar students can meet and interact with API’s UAE students and tour the breathtaking AUS campus.

Each fully-furnished unit includes an equipped kitchen, computer area, common rooms, and double bedrooms, and there is a pool and exercise equipment available in the compound. The accommodations are located 2 blocks from a major shopping mall popular, with locals. Per local customs and regulations, there is a curfew for female students (10:00 p.m.). Shuttle service to and from school is provided, and there are shuttles to local shopping available as well.

Credit Information AUS awards credit in similar fashion to most U.S. universities. Students generally take 4-5 classes in order to receive 12-15 credit hours per semester. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that they are enrolled in the required amount of semester credits to meet requirements of the home university. Abu Dhabi is the capital and largest of the United Arab Emirates. It is a place of enormous wealth thanks to its oil reserves, but it is also a region with an eye towards sustainable economic and environmental development. Students may visit the most expensive hotel ever constructed in the world, walk along the seaside Corniche, or tour the rapidly developing Saadiyat Island (home to international museums such as the Louvre, Guggenheim, and others) and Yas Island (home to a world-class racetrack, yacht club, and Ferrarri World). Doha is one of the cleanest, safest, and most rapidly developing cities in the Gulf Region, if not the world! Students will have the opportunity to tour the dazzling Souq Waqif (ancient market that has been restored and is frequented by locals and tourists alike), walk along the sparkling Corniche (seaside promenade), and visit the Museum of Islamic Art (designed by I.M. Pei, architect of the Louvre pyramids in Paris). Students may tour the Qatar University campus and meet API Qatar students, as well as visit the Aspire Sports Zone â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a training and sports facility that hosted the 2006 Asian Games and is set to host the 2022 World Cup. Oman is known for its natural beauty, resting on the Indian Ocean and serving as the gateway of the Arabian (Persian) Gulf. Oman is also known for its popular tourist attractions. Wadis (valleys), deserts, beaches and mountains are areas which make Oman unique among its neighbors. With a coastline of 1700 km, Oman offers some of the cleanest, most stunning beaches a visitor could hope to see!

Housing is separated by gender, and all students (male and female) are subject to a curfew (12:00 a.m. weekdays; 1:00 am on weekends). 40% of the student population of AUS lives in campus housing. Dorms are located on campus, within walking distance to classes (though shuttle service is also provided around campus). Shuttle service is also available at select times to transport students to popular shopping and entertainment areas in Sharjah and Dubai. Students typically have one roommate, and most rooms have one bathroom, a kitchenette, as well as access to laundry facilities, the campus athletic facilities and pool, and study/storage areas.
