Although the world knew that the Cold War was creating a tense environment that could lead to a real nuclear war at any moment, most did not know that the majority of dangerous military stand-offs were occurring out of view, underwater. The Silent War: Battles Beneath the Sea is a two-part documentary that brings these secret activities to the surface. Former submariners from the British, U.S., and Soviet navies finally felt free enough to discuss what they experienced 40 years later. From underwater chases to espionage operations, these men talk about the pressures they faced aboard deadly machines, but also the camaraderie and patriotism they felt. The Silent War also uses impressionistic reconstructions and archives to better tell the story of the intense struggle for political and territorial supremacy that occurred in the second half of the 20th century.

Know Your Enemy Sunday, June 18 at 8 p.m. Britain and America’s superior technology allowed them to secretly shadow the Soviet fleet, at close quarters, giving them vital intelligence and the upper hand if war broke out. Explore close encounters between western and Soviet forces that put the lives of submariners at risk and drove them to the edge of their physical and mental limits. 6

Sunday, June 18 at 9 p.m. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the front line of the Cold War was really beneath the ocean. For over 40 years, the details of this tense stand-off have been a closely guarded secret. Now, submariners reveal how the underwater arms race took ballistic missiles beneath the Arctic ice and remember how it nearly ended in nuclear disaster.

ONE-MINUTE BIOGRAPHY with
Hugh Bonneville
Hugh Bonneville was born in London on November 10, 1963. For many people, this actor is best known as Robert Crawley, Earl of Grantham, who Bonneville played for six years on Downton Abbey. However, Bonneville has been on stage, in television shows, and on the big screen for many years prior to that. Bonneville was a member of the National Youth Theatre of Great Britain. He then went to Cambridge University, where he studied theology. In 1986, he made his professional acting debut at the Open Air Theatre in Regent’s Park in London. He then joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1991. Throughout the 1990s, Bonneville appeared in almost two dozen different television shows. His first role in a movie was the 1994 version of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Since then, he has also been in movies such as Notting Hill, The Monuments Men, and Paddington. Bonneville has also produced, written, and directed plays. Bonneville’s role in Downton Abbey earned him one Golden Globe and two Emmy nominations. The show’s cast won three Screen Actors Guild awards for Best Ensemble. Viewers can see Bonneville during W1A, a comedy about the BBC airing Fridays at 7 p.m. and Saturdays at 9:30 p.m. on WYCC PBS Chicago.

SCIENCE Program: Beyond Geek: Kinetic Sculpture Racing 2 Focus: STEAM Grades: 3–6 Airing: Saturday, June 3 at 4 p.m. Overview: Dan Reynoso finds himself boldly going where no art has gone before, racing against all odds in a human-powered art race. He joins a team in a race over land, sand, and water, pushing engineering to its limits. Free Additional Resources: PBS Kids challenges you to make a sculpture that is at least six inches tall and has at least two parts that move in the wind. That’s what makes it kinetic—it moves. But watch out, wind can also knock it over. So, make sure the tower is sturdy enough to stand up in the wind. Program: D-Day: Over Normandy Focus: Current Events, History Grades: 6–12 Airing: Tuesday, June 6 at 8 p.m. Overview: Modern-day aerial footage shot by drone cameras is accompanied by interviews with World War II veterans, archival footage of the D-Day invasion, and newly created maps and animations. Free Additional Resources: PBS LearningMedia offers a media gallery called France and America: WWII. Students can explore a hydrographic chart of the Normandy coast from the National Archives. The WWII Foundation, the producer of the film, has additional resources including archived video, resources to talk to veterans, suggested reading, and more.

Kids Museum Passports Summer break doesn’t mean that children should stop learning! The Chicago Public Library offers Kids Museum Passports for some of Chicago’s best museums, including the Museum of Science and Industry, Shedd Aquarium, and Chicago Botanic Garden. The passes allows a family of four general admission during regular hours. The passes may be checked out for one week at a time.
