Two-thirds of the Earth is covered by water, yet we know more about far-reaching parts of outer space than we do about the deep blue. The Blue Planet, airing Mondays at 9 p.m. starting May 15, dives below the surface to show what we have been missing. The eight-part series focuses on different aspects of marine life in each episode. From the shallow coastlines to the darkest depths, The Blue Planet reveals the sea and its communities at their most fearsome and alluring. Meet creatures like orca whales, rockhopper penguins, and angler fish as they follow their instincts to survive. The Blue Planet took five years to complete. It went on to win several awards, including Best Documentary Series and Outstanding Cinematography. It was also nominated for five Emmy awards.

Monday, May 15 at 9 p.m. The vast blue expanse dominates our planet but remains largely unexplored and mysterious. The oceans are governed by a complex system of biological and physical forces. This first episode demonstrates the sheer scale, power, and complexity of the “Blue Planet.”
Monday, May 29 at 9 p.m. Endless blue stretches in every direction. The sea bed is a staggering 8 kilometers down and the nearest island is 500 kilometers away. There is nothing but the burning sun above and the blackened abyss below. How, then, does life exist in this void?
The Deep Monday, May 22 at 9 p.m. Hundreds of feet below the surface lies a place of mountain ranges, perpetual night, pressure extremes, cold—and the weirdest life forms on our planet. Take a voyage into the unknown, where constant surprises are in store and a glow in the dark can mean different things.

WYCC PBS Chicago offers a variety of news programs that offer both local and global perspectives. NHK Newsline, airing weeksdays at 4 p.m., shares the latest from Asia and the rest of the world. The program is based in Japan, but their correspondents travel the globe to bring viewers news about what is happening now. DW News, airing weekdays at 4:30 p.m. and 10 p.m., has reports and interviews on a number of topics, including politics, business, sports, and culture. This program focuses mainly on Europe, but also touches on Asia, Africa, and other places where events are taking place.
This Is America and the World, airing Wednesdays at 5 p.m., focuses on international affairs. The show is produced in Washington, D.C., and New York City. It explores the cultural, political, and social lives of people around the world. In the Loop, airing Thursdays at 7 p.m. and Sundays at 6:30 p.m., is a WYCC original news program with a dynamic forum for discussion on current news issues. It provides a fresh perspective on trending topics and goes in-depth with thoughtful dialogues. Please see the listings for more information and additional news programs.
Discovering Your Inner Journalist There are English classes at the City Colleges of Chicago that prepare students for journalism and other forms of communications writing. Students learn how to write, edit, print, and circulate newspapers. They also have the opportunity to get real-world experience by writing for the school newspaper. ONE-MINUTE BIOGRAPHY with
Rowland Scherman
Rowland Scherman started his photography career in 1961, when he became the first photographer for the Peace Corps. President John F. Kennedy, who signed an executive order to establish the Peace Corps, was photographed by Scherman when meeting with volunteers that year. Scherman became a freelance photographer in 1963. He evolved into a photojournalist, with his images appearing in a number of high-profile magazines, including Life, National Geographic, Time, and Playboy. His photographs captured some of the most important moments of the 1960s. Scherman traveled with Bobby Kennedy during his presidential campaign. He was also at the Beatles’ first concert in the United States and photographed Woodstock. His camera clicked through the March on Washington. Today, Scherman lives on Cape Cod and still takes photographs. FINE ARTS/MATHEMATICS Program: Painting and Travel with Roger & Sarah Bansemer: Inside Passage Focus: Painting, Symmetry Grades: 7–9 Airing: Monday, May 1 at 2 p.m. Overview: This program brings viewers out of the art studio and into the natural world. Roger’s experience in videography translates from the canvas to the screen with his instructional skills about painting and art. Sarah conducts thoughtful interviews as they take the back roads, discovering out-of-the-way places and famous landmarks. In this PBS LearningMedia lesson, students will create a colored pencil drawing utilizing symmetry and forms characteristic of Northwest Coast art and write a critique of their work. Program: Charlie Rose Focus: Current Events, History Grades: 4–12 Airing: Weeknights at 6 p.m. Overview: Since 1991, Charlie Rose has engaged the world’s best thinkers, writers, politicians, athletes, entertainers, business leaders, scientists, and newsmakers in one-on-one interviews and roundtable discussions. Free Additional Resources: At charlierose.com, you can search by person, topic, or year to locate an interview that matches your curriculum. Students might watch and respond in an exit slip or essay format. Students might choose an individual from your current unit of study and research their background and opinions of events of the time. Students could then reenact a Charlie Rose-style discussion as the historical figure. Perhaps they would recreate a conversation between Lincoln and Douglas, or world leaders during World War II. Another student could play the role of interviewer and moderator.

They might even see some familiar faces, like in Lakota Berenstain Bears, which helps teach children the Lakota language.
