The new season of Classic Gospel, airing Sundays at 10 p.m. and 11 p.m., offers the same homecoming concert experiences audiences have enjoyed for many years. This season features classic episodes dedicated to familiar faces and favorite hymns.

This episode, hosted by George Younce and Bill Gaither, brings together the very best of George and Glen during their vibrant days. It also honors the brilliant 50-year legacy of the Cathedrals. The Cathedrals’ best performances are paired with never-beforeseen moments from their archives.
Artists who have appeared on Billy Graham Crusades come together to sing and share incredible stories. Some share unforgettable moments in the history of the ministry. Bill and Gloria Gaither, Michael W. Smith, CeCe Winans, and others lead the group in an emotion-filled “How Great Thou Art.”

This special, taped at Asheville’s Grove Park Inn in the magnificent Blue Ridge Mountains, is dominated by songs about mountains. The Homecoming Friends sing “I’ll Meet You on the Mountain,” “There Is a Mountain,” and “How Big Is God.” The late J.D. Sumner is also remembered.
Atlanta’s massive Georgia Dome plays host for the largest one-day gathering of gospel music fans ever assembled. In addition to a medley by the much-loved Jake Hess, highlights include the Hoppers’ signature “It’s Shouting Time in Heaven” and “I Believe in a Hill Called Mt. Calvary.”

This celebration highlights the songs, the moments, and the legacy of the incredible musical journey of the Statler Brothers. It features many of their well-loved classics, including “Class of ’57,”“Bed of Roses,”“Whatever Happened to Randolph Scott,”“Flowers on the Wall,” and others.
Gaither Vocal Band performs their hits “Love Is Like a River,” “Redeemed,”“Jesus and John Wayne,” and “I Surrender to All,” among others. The concert, filmed outside of Nashville, also includes guest performances from The Martins, The Isaacs, and Buddy Greene.

One of the most celebrated artists in Christian music, the legendary Gaither Vocal Band performs “Peace in the Valley,” “Jesus Gave Me Water,” and “Amazing Grace,” among others. This program was recorded in an intimate, rustic setting just south of Nashville and includes guest performances. 6

stationbreak It’s Reading Time Television is sometimes seen as an enemy of reading, but TV shows can teach you about books and literature. They can also help bring novels to life in a different way. WYCC PBS Chicago is airing several programs either about books or based on books this month. Black America: The World of Book Publishing with Lisa Lucas features the director of the National Book Foundation. Lucas discusses the importance in enhancing the cultural value of great writing in America and how the foundation has recognized literary excellence since it was founded in 1950. This episode airs Sunday, September 3 at 1 p.m. On a dreary September evening in 1931, C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Hugo Dyson met for dinner and debate in Oxford. Tolkien & Lewis: Myth, Imagination & The Quest for Meaning (airing Sunday, September 3 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, September 24 at 5 p.m.) teaches viewers about the beliefs and thought processes of these important writers. Host Elisa Jaffe takes viewers into the story behind the story during Well Read, airing Wednesdays at 1 p.m. The program features in-depth discussions of writers’ work, style, and latest book. Tom Hardy
Tom Hardy was born on September 15, 1977, and grew up in East Sheen, Surrey, England. He is an only child, so he has always had a desire to make his parents proud. Hardy didn’t do the best in school, though, and by his teenage years he was already using drugs and alcohol. He was also arrested for stealing a car. In 2003, after a particularly bad drug experience, Hardy decided to become sober and has been so ever since. He played small roles in many movies and TV shows, including Black Hawk Down and Marie Antoinette. His role in Inception is considered his breakout, but he became a household name after playing the villain Bane in 2012’s Batman movie, The Dark Knight Rises. Hardy was the titular Max in Mad Max: Fury Road. He was nominated for an Oscar for his supporting role in The Revenant. Today, he can be seen on the TV screen for shows Peaky Blinders and Taboo. He also had a role in the film Dunkirk, based on the true World War II story. Hardy prefers to play the villain, but viewers can see a more romantic side to the actor when he plays the starring role of Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights, airing Sunday, September 3 at 8 p.m.

SOCIAL STUDIES Program: NOVA: Emperor’s Ghost Army Focus: China Grades: 4–12 Airing: Monday, September 18 at 8 p.m. Overview: Explore the buried clay warriors, chariots, and bronze weapons of China’s first emperor, which were lost and forgotten for over 2,200 years. Free Additional Resources: Students might watch this video clip to learn more about Emperor Qin Shi Huang. There are discussion questions and background information to guide a conversation with students. The Around the Globe: China collection allows students to take a virtual trip to China to learn more about China’s society and culture, as well as the art of China through the centuries.

Investigating History History Detectives, airing Mondays at 9 p.m., asks probing questions behind a single iconic mystery from America’s past. The History Detectives website offers lesson plans for educators that include ways to help students use sourcing, contextualizing, corroborating, and close reading.
Lessons from World War II Viewers can see what life was like for women living in Britain during World War II by watching Masterpiece: Home Fires (airing Tuesdays at 8 p.m.). For students to understand more about World War II and its impact on the world, there are a variety of lessons and activities available on PBS LearningMedia. Shaping the Postwar World looks at U.S. foreign policy and how it has changed.
