Understanding the importance of detail is just as crucial as having a good design sense as an architect. When documenting the camera we took an extremely literal approach to ensure that all of the detail was captured in our drawings. Equally important as the detail is the understanding of how each part “connects and interacts with one another.

When exploring the camera I was intrigued by the mechanical intricacies

“The operation of the hinged mirror is also very interesting. Especially since

that allowed the lens to function.

this technology has stood against the test of time and can be found in many cameras manufactured today. “ -Cannon Support Technician

LE CABANON Adam Mahardy

Le Corbusier’s Le Cabanon was an architectural masterpiece of modest proportions. Just like the camera, he had to make good use of the little space he was dealing with. All of the parts had to work together and combine to make one unbroken space.

The Villa Mairea and Kunsthal both have very differant shapes, functions, and personalities. Although they are quite differant in many ways, all architecture stems from the same basic concepts and understandings of form and space. While the Mairea was created to provide a more intimate and private itinerary, the Kunsthal’s spatial purpose is to provide a public space where its inhabitants can interact and move freely with one another.

Although the Villa Mairea is devoted for a more personal interaction, Alvar Aalto designed this building to house and display numerous works of art similar to Rem Koolhaas’ The Kunsthal.

Aalto’s design process for the living room is very interesting. He started with a stereotomic cube and let the tectonics of the adjacent rooms delegate how the original space was to be shaped(A). He punched the tectonic pieces(B) into the mass and revealed the spatial shape of the living room(C).

Interestingly enough, the Villa Mairea and Kunsthal have more in common than one might think at first glance. If you distill both plans down to their simplest forms they are quite similar. Both plans contain a public and private area, garden, natural space, and an extension that bridges the relation ship between them all.

BET WIXT AND BET WEEN Adam Mahardy

Design 2 Spring 2011

When I began this project I wanted to establish an idea and try to develop and represent it. I let it grow and mature through the different steps we took to explore the various conditions of the courtyard. I had two initial ideas involving separate aspects of the courtyard. The first was about overhead conditions that produced filtered light, and the second was about an axis that guided you through the courtyard.

CAMPUS VESSEL Adam Mahardy

My three initial perspectives of the courtyard dealt with the ideas of movement, scale, and spatial reference. To show compression, I also presented a plan perspective and diagramed the axial circuit that is running through the courtyard.

“Light is of decisive importance in experiencing

architecture. The same room can be made to give very different spatial impressions by the simple expedient of changing the size and location of its openings. -Steen Eiler Rasmussen

When I finally began constructing my light vessel I wanted to manipulate the light and use it to aid in the exploration of my original ideas. The overhead conditions consisted of different patterns and variations of filtered light; this was one of the main ideas of my project. I showed this by allowing light to pass through multiple layers that were “perforated. As each ray of light passed through the individual layers, they became unique in the way they interacted with the ground conditions of the model. I also manipulated the light to reveal the axis I had been analyzing up to this point. The actual circulation of the courtyard is not made up of just one or two different things. In fact, the buildings, foliage, elevation changes and much more contribute to the experience of walking through the courtyard. This was the reason why I choos to create the illuminated axis with the use of multiple materials. The overhead conditions of my vessel contain perforated paper and two different scales of planar elements.
