Paeroa & Waihi
FAMILY FUN
Paeroa is a central hub at the base of the Coromandel Peninsula and the entrance through to the Bay of Plenty, giving access to many activities in both the immediate and wider areas such as the bush and the beaches. There are several places of interest to visit within the town such as the Historical Maritime Museum or the seven metre high L&P bottle, or get lost amongst the numerous op shops and antique stores overflowing with collectables! Venture a little further afield to explore the wondrous Karangahake Gorge.
KARANGAHAKE GORGE
CRUISING BACK IN TIME The Ariana Riverboat Cruise is a restored river launch closely resembling the type of craft once used by the Northern Steamship Co, to service its larger vessels that plied between 1880 and the 1900’s. The Ariana carries a maximum of 20 passengers and is available for river excursions on the Waihou and Ohinemuri rivers or a special trip by river to the Pioneer Tavern in Hikutaia. For more information phone 07) 862 8896.
The beautiful Karangahake Gorge links Paeroa to Waihi and features walkways, old tunnels and mining history. The Karangahake Gorge historic walkway follows the old Paeroa to Waihi railway line with the remainder of the track following the banks of the Ohinemuri River. Old mine buildings and machinery can be seen from a number of locations on the walkway. A highlight of the Hauraki Rail Trail includes riding through the stunning Karangahake Gorge. The trail follows the path of two historic railway lines, running from Thames to Paeroa and Waikino to Te Aroha, while a new path will link Waikino to Waihi. A number of short walks including the Windows Walk and Rail Tunnel Loop, as well as the longer walks of Karangahake Mountain and the Karangahake Historic Walkway, can all be experienced in the gorge. For more information visit www.thecoromandel.com/Paeroa/.

CAMPING AT THE MOUNT
The Mount is a great place to try your hand at a new sport. Many companies in the area offer lessons and gear hire for activities such as surfing, paddle boarding, kitesurfing, kayaking, fishing, paragliding, windsurfing and more. If it’s a windy day head down to Tay Street beach for some amazing kite surfing inspiration. Alternatively, calm weather is perfect for paddle boarding – Pilot bay is great for beginners as it is sheltered and without surf.
TAKE A SCENIC STROLL The Mount Base Track is a great scenic walk around the base of Mount Maunganui. At 3.5km this walk is suitable for all levels of fitness. Watch out for marine life as the walk takes you from surf to harbour. Climbing to the top of Mount Maunganui is a scenic feast, featuring native bush and birds as well as views out to Matakana and Mayor Islands. Look out over the Mount main beach and the white sandy beaches of the coastline, which disappears into the distance towards Whakatane. At 3.8km uphill, this walk is suited to a slightly more advanced level of fitness, but well worth the huff and puff for the reward at the top!
INTERESTING FACT Nearly one million people walk or run around the base track of Mauao (Mount Maunganui) each year.
LOCAL ICON Step out of the ocean and into Copenhagen Cones if you know what is good for you! These ice creams are an absolute dream on a hot summer’s day… but time your visit right because there is often a line out the door and down the footpath! Open for more than 30 years, Copenhagen serves beautiful waffle cones filled with ice cream or frozen yoghurt, and a variety of yummy toppings. The BEST.

WHAKATANE OVERLOOK
Nga Tapuwae o Toi, or the ‘Footprints of Toi’, is a walkway which captures the essence of the Whakatane District. It includes pa sites of major historic significance, superb native forest, spectacular pohutukawa stands, unsurpassed coastal views, seabird colonies, forest birds in abundance, plantation forest and rural vistas. The track includes three major scenic reserves Kohi Point Scenic Reserve, Ohope Scenic Reserve and Mokoroa Scenic Reserve. The walkway is
accessible to most people, regardless of fitness level, because it can be undertaken in sections or as a 16-kilometre round trip. The total trip can be completed in five to seven hours. Information boards placed in strategic locations tell much more of the district’s natural and historic heritage. If you intend to complete the entire 16-kilometre round trip, it is recommended you do so in a clockwise direction; the track is far more challenging going in the opposite direction.
ART HUB The community’s arts and culture hub, Te Koputu a Te Whanga a Toi, opened in June 2012. The centre hosts the Horizon Energy Library, the Whakatane District Museum display and three gallery spaces. The Horizon Energy Library offers self-checkout, after-hours returns, comfortable places for reading and research, and interactive opportunities for young people. The Centre’s Museum display offers engaging experiences with stories and taonga (treasures) of the Whakatane District.
MEET THE LOCALS The Ohope Craft Market is one of the Bay of Plenty’s biggest and most vibrant markets with local crafts, food, plants and produce. Held every two weeks on Saturday from 8am over summer and monthly over winter. Talk to local food producers, pick up some bargains and see a range of crafts and gifts from local artisans.

THE LADY ON THE ROCK
Unveiled at the Whakatane Heads in 1965 as a memorial to the wife of Sir William Sullivan, this bronze statue atop Turuturu Rock lies at the mouth of the Whakatane River and commemorates the bravery of Wairaka and the daughter of Toroa, captain-navigator of the Mataatua waka. When the Mataatua waka first arrived at Whakatane after making a perilous voyage from Ngati Awa’s ancestral homeland of Hawaiki 600 years ago, the men left the women alone in the canoe while they went ashore. When the canoe started to drift back to sea, Wairaka (defying the tapu that forbade women to handle a canoe) seized the paddle and brought the waka back to shore crying, “Kia Whakatane au i ahau” (I will act the part of a man). This cry is the origin of the town’s name. Easy viewing from Muriwai Drive, Whakatane.
ISLAND TIME Moutohora (Whale Island) is one of New Zealand’s little known treasures and home to a number of New Zealand’s rare and endangered plants, birds and reptiles. Due to the precious nature of this pest free island access is highly restricted to the general public and the only way to visit the island is with a Department of Conservation approved concessionaire. Sitting only 9km off the coast of Whakatane, the journey to Moutohora is just a short 15 minute boat ride aboard ‘The Moutohora Cat’. The fully guided tour of the island allows visitors to learn about the flora and fauna and the conservation effort focused on Moutohora for the past 50 years. Visit www.whiteisland.co.nz for further details.

Rotorua
REDWOODS TREETOP WALK
Opened in January 2016, the Redwoods Treetop Walk is one of the newest attractions in Rotorua. It is a truly unique experience and something that not only tourists can enjoy! Locals too have been flocking to the forest to feel the magic for themselves. Unlike some of the adrenalin packed adventures that Rotorua has on offer, the Treewalk is something people of many ages and abilities can appreciate. As long as you can put one foot in front of the other you are a candidate for this activity – the age range of visitors to date is 2-92 years! So bring the whole family along and no one will have to sit this one out.
The distance of the walk is easily achievable for all levels of fitness too. It is the longest living tree walk in New Zealand at over half a kilometer long, but takes around 40 minutes at a light pace. To really relish in the experience around 90 minutes could be taken wandering the decks and bridges, but the great thing is there is no limit on your time spent on the Treewalk. Not only does the natural glory of the Whakarewa Forest radiate, but walkers are offered an exclusive vantage point by being situated on platforms and bridges below the canopy, and above the forest floor. This allows the towering redwoods to retain their sheer dominance,
LOCAL SPOT The Okere Falls Store caters to locals, tourists and holiday-makers. It is the heart of the Okere community where locals can meet and treat themselves to an espresso or boutique beer, kids can play and essential groceries bought. There are some yummy German treats on offer, and if that’s up your alley don’t miss their annual German themed Beer Fest! The Store has an amazing beer garden out the back where many shin digs are held. Perfect for hanging out or for group occasions, as well as the many gigs and events that are held at this great spot. If the weather packs in, there is a large covered deck at the front of the Store. Order some hot food after rafting or kayaking the Kaituna, kick back and debrief with friends.
which would have been impeded on if the walk was constructed in the treetops. Also of interest is the clever engineering of this attraction, which is suspended from the trees. An ecologically friendly design that does no rub or wear the delicate bark of the 100 year old redwoods – it is a fascinating creation.

Taupo
MINE BAY
The lakeside town of Taupo provides a base for visitors who love to fish for trout, ski Mount Ruapehu and explore the local geothermal phenomena. Popular Taupo experiences include Huka Falls, geothermal walks, lake cruises, New Zealand’s first public cable wakeboarding park and guided kayak expeditions to see the rock carvings at Mine Bay.
The impressive Mine Bay Maori Rock Carvings are over 14 metres high and only accessible by water. The carvings may look like the remains of an ancient Maori village but were in fact sculpted by hand in the late 70s by master carver Matahi WhakatakaBrightwell. View the Maori Rock Carvings yourself by taking a relaxing scenic cruise across the lake or get up close and personal on a kayaking tour.
TAKE A SPIN! The fun and excitement of jetboating along beautiful native bush lines and sheer rock cliff faces of the Waikato River combined with 360° spins is an amazing must-do! Passing nature at disorientating speeds before reaching the awe inspiring majesty that is the Huka Falls is thrilling and inspiring. www.hukafallsjet.com
HUKA PRAWN PARK REVIEW The tour of a prawn farm was really quite fascinating, and it was just long enough to get all the info you need but short enough that the kids didn’t lose interest. Our cheerful guide told us all the prawn facts we would ever need to know and the kids got to participate and feed the baby prawns - the tickles from little prawn bites made both my girls squeal and giggle. At the end of the tour we got the run down on how to catch a prawn, were given a few essential tips, issued bamboo fishing rods, bait and buckets of ice and sent forth to the ponds to catch what we thought would be our dinner… There were heaps of people out there, each trying to refine their technique and trick the prawns into latching onto their hook. Many had their buckets brimming with prawns so we thought – it can’t be that hard!

native bush surrounding the beautiful Lake Taupo. If you’re fit and make an early start, you can ride from Waihaha Bridge to Whakaipo Bay in one day. You will be riding for a minimum of eight hours, plus half an hour for a boat trip to connect the two halves.
NOT TO BE MISSED The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is rated as the best one-day hike in New Zealand. This world famous day hike treks across active volcanoes, past emerald lakes and through stunning native bush. It can take between five and a half to eight hours and covers a distance of 19.4km one way. Definitely do your research on this one – depending on the time of year and the weather you could be taking either sunblock or snow gear! You can organise a shuttle bus to pick you up from your accommodation in Taupo and drop you home at the end of the day.
