Pacific Coast Village Pacific Coast Village is a resort style village located directly across the road from the white sandy beach and magnificent Pacific Ocean between Mt Maunganui and Papamoa. Residents enjoy the lifestyle offered by Pacific coast Village and liken it to a kind of “Gold Coast” without leaving home! While walks along the beach are common daily occurrences, other activities enjoyed by the residents include luncheons, happy hours, pool evenings, line dancing, bowls, card club and soon to be introduced the Beer and Wine club. The Summerhouse is regularly enjoyed by residents for birthdays and special occasions. The centre piece of the village will be the Community Centre, a comprehensive community building for the exclusive use of residents including reception, library, lounge, restaurant,

Welcome to the November issue of the Golden Years.
Introduction
I
n this issue we will talk about the wonderful lifestyle villages/rest homes and how we are spoilt for choice in Tauranga. Your health and level of activity will help to determine the best option available for you. We also talk about the travels of Katikati resident Annette Prier and her journey “in the footsteps of pilgrims”. Certainly a challenging and very rewarding journey for Annette who is a highly experienced traveller. If you like to walk, but are not up to the extent of travelling overseas we have plenty of gems right on our back doorstep. There is also the opportunity to join “City On Its Feet”, who provides the framework for more than 30 organised walking groups throughout the city. For those that enjoy a special hobby, read about Gideon de Lautour a car enthusiast who showcases his classic sport cars. Another hobby we cover is Patchwork quilting and the energy and creativity it provides to Puck van der Beek a member of the Papamoa Patchers. Last but not least we talk about preparing your home for the future and the importance of regular health checks and why they are so vital. We hope you enjoy your read!

With so many lifestyle villages and rest homes vying for the attention of retired people in Tauranga, choosing the place you’d really like to spend what’s often called your “golden years” can be bewildering, to say the least.
L
Visits from family and friends are encouraged and welcomed and for those who are unable for whatever reason to look after themselves independently or live with family, a rest home can be a solution that works for all parties. Specialist rest homes now also cater for those with advanced Alzheimer’s disease or age-related dementia, providing high-level care in a safe environment. For younger retired people who are still reasonably fit and active, life in a retirement or lifestyle village offers numerous advantages, not the least of which is no longer having to look after a large home and garden. Villages offer a great sense of community, together with the fun and excitement of acquiring new friends. All offer opportunities to take part in a huge range of sporting and leisure activities or develop new interests and hobbies. Some are extremely well
ong a haven for retired folk, Tauranga has a huge selection of modern and beautifully appointed retirement villages, some near the water and others in tranquil rural surroundings, while others offer the convenience of inner city living. There’s something for every budget, whether you prefer the simple life or like to live in the lap of luxury. If you are struggling to make a choice, think carefully about what kind of lifestyle you want and the level of care you may need, now and in the future. For those getting on in years and whose health isn’t so good, residential care in a rest home offers a practical solution. Many rest homes cater for older people with mobility difficulties and who use a walking frame or wheelchair. They specialise in caring for mild to moderately dependent people who need help with things like dressing and showering, as well as assisting those who need a larger amount of help.

“Fantastic”, is how Katikati resident Annette Prier describes a challenging walk in the footsteps of ancient Catholic Pilgrims, 750km from France to Portugal.
A
fter completing her first walking tour, following in the footsteps of ancient Catholic pilgrims on the Way of St James, Annette Prier says she’d love to do it all over again. With 25 fellow travellers from all over the world she travelled 750ks from France to Lisbon, Portugal, covering some sections of the route by coach, but also walking a challenging 174kms. There were times after the first few days, the 77 year old confesses, when she felt like giving up. But having done some advance training, she says she soon came right and completed the fascinating journey with no problems. Starting with a trip by high-speed train from Paris to the starting point in Lyon, the four-week tour included stopovers in fascinating medieval towns, rambles through stunningly beautiful countryside and visits to famous landmarks like the famous Notre Dame cathedral in Paris, France. “That was one of the highlights for me,” says Annette, 77. “We were allowed to visit
as a group during Vespers which was very special, as the area where it was held is usually locked.” One particularly memorable visit for the music lover was to the ancient Cahors Cathedral in southwestern France, where the group listened to a Gregorian chant being performed. The group enjoyed some fabulous food, with one highlight a meal at a five Michelinstarred restaurant in Portugal. “There was an incredible display of lobsters which turned out to actually be our entrée,” says Annette. A highly experienced traveller, says she managed well, in spite of having no idea how she would cope with so much walking. “I was expecting to be the oldest in the group, but there was an 80 year old on the tour too. I had a bit of a meltdown one day early in the tour when my body was screaming that it didn’t want to this anymore, but I soon got over it and nearly everyone had that same experience at least once.”

Annette Prier with a scallop shell symbolising the walk in honour of St. James. According to legend, scallop shells covered St James’ body after it was found on the shores of the Galician coast.
According to legend, the martyred body of the apostle St. James was transported from Palestine to Spain for burial. By the 10th century St. James was regarded as the protector of Christian Europe against the Moslem Moors. A church was constructed on his grave at Compostela in Galicia, and became a drawcard for pilgrims who walked there from France along the ‘Camino de Santiago’.
The tour takes in some of the world’s greatest architecture.

And she has some seasoned advice for anyone contemplating a similar trip. “This tour involved walking two or three hours a day, but one day we walked for five hours, which was really tough. If you haven’t done a walking tour before, you need to do at least six months of training. I trained for just six weeks and it wasn’t enough.” With the Way of St James ticked off her list of adventures, Annette says she wouldn’t mind doing it again, this time following a route through Italy. But then on the other hand, she’d also like to make a return visit to New York.

If you want to get fit and healthy, there’s any easy solution: just take a walk.
A
t the Mount, Papamoa and Tauranga, more than 1000kms of well-maintained walkways meander through beautiful bush, coastal and estuary areas. They are used by a wide variety of people of all ages, from serious athletes, through to those who just enjoy a bit of a stroll now and again. Walking comes with a huge number of health benefits, something that’s recognised by the City On Its Feet programme, administered by Sport BOP. The innovative programme provides the framework for more than 30 organised walking groups spread throughout the city. The programme has run since 2006 and Sport BOP recreation adviser Jen Riley says it is now virtually self-sustaining. Groups cater for all levels of fitness and each has a captain as the key contact. The captain is also responsible for things like organising trips away and greeting new members, with some making an extra effort to ensure walkers are kept well informed through regular newsletters. There are plenty of benefits to be enjoyed from walking with a group, says Jen.

CT Colonography for early detection of Bowel Cancer Colon cancer is a leading cause of preventable cancer death in New Zealand, behind only breast and lung cancer in incidence. It is often silent for many years. However, because most cancers start as small growing polyps, if caught early this is a curable disease. CT colonography is a minimally invasive, highly sensitive means of detecting the early stages of colon cancer. The CT colonography technique is much better tolerated by patients and is more sensitive than the barium enema in evaluating diseases of the colon and in particular detection of colonic polyps and cancers.

11 “It helps keep people motivated and provides an opportunity to make new friends while keeping physically active.” Most groups total anything from seven to 30 regular walkers, with numbers particularly strong in Papamoa, Bethlehem, Otumoetai and The Avenues. The larger groups cater for up to three different levels of fitness, with some people walking for up to an hour at a time, while others take it easier. “The great thing about walking is that it’s free, you can go at your own pace and you don’t need special equipment,” says Jen. “And it has tons of health benefits: it’s good for your heart, it’s particularly good for people with diabetes, it keeps you fit – and it makes you feel better. “Some of the groups are really social and meet for coffee after the walk, and lots of friendships are formed. It’s great for single people as they can meet others and it makes walking a lot more fun.” Sport BOP organises a quarterly “captain’s catch up” and provides help with timetables and promotion of the programme. Jen says some groups add interest to their outings with visits to different areas like McLaren Falls Park, Rotorua’s Redwoods Forest at Whakarewarewa, the Karangahake Gorge Rail Trail or the Waikato River Trail. “But we are really lucky here in Tauranga because we have so many great places to go walking. And it’s great to see the developers of new subdivisions catering for walkers by creating walkways.”

The racy-looking Triumph TR3 symbolises the golden age of British motoring.
A
ttractive, quick and affordable, it was one of the most popular soft-top sports cars of the 1950s and every schoolboy’s dream. They’re a rare sight these days. But before long a beautifully restored 1955 example will take to the road in Katikati. The lucky owner is Gideon de Lautour, a car enthusiast with a long background in industrial manufacturing. Using skills acquired from decades in the catering equipment and super yacht industries, he has manufactured from scratch many of the replacement parts for the TR3 nearing completion in his garage. Gideon spotted the car in an Auckland radiator repair shop 40 years ago. It was love at first sight and he parted with $600 for the partially-restored machine. “It has followed us around like a bad smell ever since,” quips wife Joy. It’s only in the last couple of years that Gideon has had time to get serious about the project. But in the eight months since the de Lautours moved from their avocado orchard into town, there’s been plenty of progress. When it’s complete he’ll test drive the TR3 and decide whether he likes it enough to shell out for expensive finishing work.
“Getting into it will be the most challenging part,” the energetic and affable 75-year-old says, laughing. “I might need a block and tackle to lower myself into the seat.” Joy disagrees: “Getting out will be the problem.” When the Triumph is back on the road, another challenging project awaits: rebuilding a rare 1925 10/23 Talbot Roadster whose rusted remains were retrieved from a Manawatu farm. Gideon certainly has the skills to do it. For many years he worked in manufacturing and design for a well-known catering equipment producer. In the 1980s when the company closed he went into business with a colleague, manufacturing a fibreglass-bodied kit car called the Cheetah. The E-type lookalike used all HQ Holden parts, making it easy to build and maintain. The pair made nine before the new availability of cheap Japanese sports cars made them uneconomical to produce and Gideon took on a new career with an Auckland super yacht builder, retiring nine years later. A member of the Bay of Plenty Vintage Car Club, he is enthusiastic about the

Among the members of Papamoa Patchers, the name Puck van der Beek is legendary. Not only is she energetic, creative, friendly, hospitable and wise, she’s also, shall we say, in the older age group of patchwork enthusiasts who meet twice monthly at the Arataki Community Centre. We can’t reveal her age because Puck insisted this story be about Papamoa Patchers, not her. But we can say that she and husband Henk’s long and fascinating lives would make the most incredible story – if they’d let you tell it, that is. An enthusiastic and hugely productive quilt-maker, she loves Papamoa Patchers and regards her fellow members as family. “The whole lot cares about one another – it’s fantastic. Everyone helps one another. And it’s a great place for meeting new friends. That’s the important part.” The flourishing club was set up eight years ago, says Puck. “Rachel Copestake and Joan Pierce put an ad in the paper and it all started from there, with four of us. “We first met at the Papamoa Library, but soon the club had got so big we had to move. There are 60 of us now.” Puck turns out intricate and finely detailed patchwork in astoundingly quick time, spending hours in her workroom behind her
trusty Janome sewing machine. Her quilts are stunning objects of beauty, but she tends not to keep them for long: thanks to a large extended family they tend to find new homes quickly. Patchwork, said to have originated among the Amish communities of Pennsylvania, makes an excellent retirement hobby as you can do it at your own pace, says Puck. In fact almost all of the club’s members are retired, and newly-retired women particularly enjoy patchworking, says committee member and convenor of October’s annual exhibition, Stella Cressey. “Sometimes when people retire they are a bit lost because they’ve been going to work forever, then suddenly they have all this time.” She says the club is an amazingly diverse group, with members who are full of life’s experiences and are willing to share and help. And you don’t have to live in Papamoa to join, she says. “Some come from Bethlehem, Te Puke and other places. It’s mostly, I think, because we have such great camaraderie. “You don’t have to be very skilled – just interested. You can make something simple and learn as you go along.”

As they get older and their lifestyle needs change, many people choose to live in retirement villages or rest homes.
W
hile both are popular options with benefits of there own, there are also plenty of people who prefer to stay in the familiar surroundings of their own home. If you are one of them, it’s time to start looking at how you can adapt your home to suit the needs of an older you – or to consider downsizing to something more practical. As one researcher has noted, most homes have “Peter Pan” plans, as they seem designed for people who will never grow old. And that’s why you need to cast a really critical eye on your surroundings, without being swayed too much by emotional attachment. If you become less mobile and have to use a wheelchair, how easy would it be to get around inside – or even get in and out of the house? If your home is on two or more levels, how will you get between floors when using the stairs is no longer an option? Consider whether the kitchen would be easy to use safely in your 70s, 80s and even beyond, and whether bathrooms are easily accessible. Think about how you would get in and out of the shower or bath if you were a bit wobbly on your pins.
How Inclusive is Your Customer Service? SwitchedOn are running Disability Awareness Workshops that will challenge you to reflect on your own attitudes, language, behaviours and perceptions around disability and around customer service.
There are many advantages to a pre-paid funeral plan with Elliotts: • The interest remains yours and helps offset price rises over the years • Any residual can be donated to your chosen charity • You can pay in regular low instalments or in full, to suit your needs • We offer the security of the Funeral Directors Association of New Zealand Funeral Trust.
There are so many “ahh ha” moments throughout the workshop so be prepared! SwitchedOn love the “ahh ha” moments. These workshops will help you unwrap your current perceptions, assumptions and attitude about disability, what it is, what it looks like and for a moment give you a glimpse at the barriers and challenges that a person who has a disability/impairment faces every day. You will examine environmental, communication and social barriers and develop a plan on what you can do to achieve positive outcomes for those you serve who have a disability/impairment.
Feedback from past attendees of this workshop have been really positive, here’s just a few of them,

At Elliotts, we are always conscious of keeping costs down while always providing exceptional service.
The NZ Disability Survey released earlier this year found 24% of NZ’s population live with some form of disability or impairment. It also identified that 59% of people over 65 live with an impairment. That’s a significant portion of the population.
15 Check out the living spaces and bedrooms, and don’t forget the details, like whether light switches are easy to find and whether phone connections are in convenient places. Is your present lighting adequate, or does it need updating? And assuming you’ll still be driving in later years, is the garage easy to get in and out of? Then take a look outside. If there are steps to negotiate, are they safe? And what about decks? Then there’s the garden. You might enjoy spending time in the great outdoors now, but what about in 15 or 20 years’ time? Fortunately, there are practical things you can do to adapt your present home. And if you plan for the future and have work done in stages, it needn’t be horrendously expensive. Even something as simple as decluttering your home and relocating furniture can be a big step forward, and won’t cost a thing. Falls cause huge numbers of injuries in the home, but you can help prevent it happening to you by installing grab handles in the bathroom and safety rails on stairs and steps. Install non-slip flooring in bathrooms and move loose mats, rugs and carpets somewhere where you can’t trip over them. Creating a wheelchair-friendly home calls for more drastic action, but a skilled builder can eliminate raised entrances, both into the house and between rooms. Minor but effective bathroom and kitchen alterations can be relatively straightforward too. A wet floor bathroom is much easier to use than a conventional one, as is a toilet with plenty of space around it. Outside, non-slip pavers are a good idea. Make sure the driveway is smooth and unobstructed and that the mailbox is easy to reach and open.
Access between floors in a larger home will inevitably call for a more costly solution such as a lift.

As we age, our bodies change and health issues become more frequent and sometimes more serious.
T
hat’s why it’s important to have regular medical checks – and we don’t just mean limiting visits to your GP to when you’re feeling really bad. Regular visits can help prevent more serious problems later in life, and could even save your life. The same goes for visits to other health professionals. Few people enjoy a session at the dentist’s but again, a regular check will prevent expensive problems later. As the New Zealand Dental Association points out, there are many things a dentist can spot during a dental check-up, like weakening older fillings, early signs of gum disease, tooth decay and other oral problems. It’s vital also to look after your eyesight, because issues like macular degeneration, cataracts, and glaucoma, are common with age. If you’re over 60, have a yearly check and schedule more regular visits if you already suffer from eye problems. Hearing defects become more obvious as we age, and in New Zealand an estimated 50 – 60 per cent of the adult population over the age of 60 has some kind of hearing

17 bones healthy and reduce the risk of fractures. If you’re overweight, keep in mind that you’ll inevitably become less mobile, affecting both your health and your quality of life. If it’s a concern, talk to your GP, who might refer you to a dietician. If you already have health insurance you won’t need persuading that it’s an excellent idea. Unfortunately later in life, at the time when people tend to need it most, it can get pretty expensive. But shop around and you should be able to find a policy that suits you.
impairment. The good news is that most of these problems are treatable, but again, regular checks are best. If all this sounds like bad and expensive news, remember you can do plenty to help yourself by maintaining a well balanced diet, keeping mind and body active and forming safety habits to avoid accidents and falls. Smoking doesn’t make sense whatever age you are and if you enjoy a tipple or two, remember that as far as alcohol is concerned, moderation is by far the best policy. There’s endless debate as to what constitutes a healthy diet and what’s declared good for you one year can end up in the food sin bin the next. What isn’t up for debate though, is the importance of eating plenty of fruit and vegetables – at least five portions a day. Bread, rice, potatoes, pasta and other starchy foods should be included in your diet, and wholegrain varieties are best. Milk and dairy foods are also good in moderation, as are meat, fish, eggs, beans and other non-dairy sources of protein. And don’t forget fish: two portions of oily fish weekly are good, as are foods rich in Vitamin D. Rice pasta, bread and breakfast cereals, should also feature regularly as well as foods like beans, potatoes, lentils and oats. Curb digestive problems with fibre-rich foods and for energy, include high iron content foods in your diet, but limit red and processed meats. Avoid too much salt as it can raise your blood pressure and increase the risk of heart disease or a stroke. Women, especially, should have plenty of calcium to keep

Are you at risk of diabetes?
If you are diagnosed as having diabetes, you should have been referred to Tauranga Eye Specialists (formally Park Street Eye Clinic), for retinal photos to be taken of your eyes.
More than 243,000 New Zealanders have diabetes. The majority of these being type two, with up to 50 new cases diagnosed daily in New Zealand. Despite these statistics, type two diabetes can be managed, and with the right support, people with diabetes can live active, healthy lives. Eating healthily is one of the most important factors in both preventing the onset of type two diabetes, and avoiding longer term, serious complications in those with diabetes. The theme of International Diabetes Week 2014, is ‘Healthy Eating Starts with Breakfast.” A healthy breakfast can help manage weight, and for people living with diabetes keep blood glucose levels stable.
If you have been diagnosed with diabetes and have never been referred to us, please ask your GP. In some people, diabetes can have a damaging effect on the blood vessels that nourish the eye’s light-sensitive nerve layer at the back of the eye (the retina). Such damage is permanent, cumulative and may result in blindness if not controlled.

If diabetic damage to the eye (diabetic retinopathy) is detected early, laser treatment can be used to minimise further damage. Early damage seldom causes any visual symptoms to the patient, so it is important to screen ALL those with diabetes on a regular basis. Early detection by photo screening will allow prompt treatment where needed.

E
arlier this year, the newly refurbished apartments and redevelopment of Ocean Shores Retirement Village were unveiled to the public. The Ocean Shores redevelopment was an experience that galvanised the community as a whole and on a balmy Wednesday evening in October, the village, its management, staff and residential community have received recognition for a job well done. At the Lend Lease conference entitled ‘Celebrate & Recalibrate’, held at Peppers The Sands Resort outside Melbourne, Ocean Shores Village received the Village of the Year award. With 70 Australian and New Zealand villages competing for the award, this was recognition of an extraordinary story of extensive disruption over a 12 month period. It was an acknowledgement of the outstanding leadership of Village Manger Sandy Quigley who with the support of her dedicated team and understanding of the resident community guided the village through a most difficult time of extensive change.
“She’s an extraordinary lady,” said Michael Eggington, Lend Lease's Managing Director of Retirement Living. Michael’s vision was to recognise the winning village as a whole, the total village experience, including staffing, residents’ experience and overall quality of the village. At the same time, his idea was to recognise the challenges faced by the village and appreciate how those were dealt with. The newly refurbished apartments at Ocean Shores Village were the culmination of an arduous journey of redevelopment. The Village is a sought after, safe and healthy place to live and the redevelopment incorporates 84 apartments in two three-level buildings and a single-storey central building housing the reception and common areas. Ocean Shores is set within mature landscaped gardens, with its own bowling-green, gymnasium and heated swimming pool. The village has a pool building, which was demolished and rebuilt. The main building is part of an 8.5 hectare village that includes 124 quality, spacious villas.
