FEAST KERIKERI
Feast Kerikeri is all about fresh, fun, free range and tasty food - and a cheeky cocktail or two! The latest venture for owners Tara and Greg Forsyth who only moved to Kerikeri 5 years ago.
F
east began trading at 3 Homestead Road on the 27th April 2021...our timing was not the best considering all that has happened in Northland since then, but we have survived the challenges and are now able to trade properly for the first time without restraints, mandates and border closures. We’ve built this business in our local market but look forward to welcoming the visitors and tourists - roll on summer 2022/23. Feast Kerikeri is a modern eatery and licensed cafe in the heart of Kerikeri
offering one of Northlands best casual food experiences. Our city worthy kitchen menu and ever changing cabinet offerings ensure something for everyone. We love supporting our locals, and are proud to offer some of Northlands best - including local wines from Rogue Vines, Marsden Estate and spirits from Black Collar Distillery. Our meat is provided by the Ohaeawai Butchery and eggs from the one and only Alan “Rocky” Rockwell. We also provide catering and private functions on request. Our covered courtyard is very popular in both warmer and cooler times. Our modern interior makes for a comfortable and inviting environment for corporate and casual meetings and of course there is Free wifi.
Here at Feast Kerikeri, we love hosting events - everything from Pink Ribbon fundraisers to Gin tasting nights. We are the regular host of the Bay Business Breakfast each month and the Bay of Islands Women in Business monthly meet ups. The Feast crew have all been handpicked by owner Tara, who has put together an eclectic group of women who love to have fun, laugh a lot, and make all customer interractions an experience. We all love what we do, and it shows by the shear number of votes it took to win the More FM Customer Choice category. We are blown away at the support from our local community. This award win is testament to the level of consistent service provided by the crew - I’m so proud of this team of amazing ladies - Brianna Kelly, Moraecah Jepson, Christine Eastlake, Olivia Harkins, Lily Martin and to our newest members Tayla Spence, Kate De Vries and Jada Rollston.
“Winning the Wynn Fraser Paints Emerging Business category is a personal triumph for Tara. This one is for me and all the work it takes to run this business behind the scenes. Our thanks to the wonderful sponsors, we are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to have participated, and walking away with 2 wins is just Epic!.”
Located in the heart of Kerikeri, Feast NZ caters to all and every appetite with a large selection of sweet and savoury dishes including both vegan and gluten free options all changing daily. Enjoy catching up with friends and family over a delicious, fresh roasted coffee in our sunny spacious courtyard or inside our warm, modern and cosy interior.

CELEBRATING THE 2022 NORTHLAND BUSINESS EXCELLENCE AWARDS The Northland Business Excellence Awards presentation and celebration evening took place on Friday November 4, 2022. The evening brought together Awards entrants, sponsors, judges, and key stakeholders from across the region to celebrate and honour the outstanding achievements of local businesses, and individuals.
T
he night saw home-based care providers tlc4u2 walk away as the Northpower and Top Energy Northland Business Excellence Supreme Award winners, and local business owner Lindsay Faithfull of McKay Electrical inducted into the Northern Advocate Business Hall of Fame. NorthChamber Board President Tim Robinson said, “This year’s event, after an ‘in-person’ hiatus in 2021, was outstanding with lots of positive feedback. It was fantastic to dress up and celebrate some of the very best of Tai Tokerau’s businesses community. The event format made for lots of networking, and a chance to build new relationships. Congrats to all!” The Awards process has 14 Business Categories offering a range of entry options to suit business size, age, turnover and specialist focus. Entry criteria ranges from the broad based, but stringent Business Category entry form based on the internationally recognised Baldridge Business Excellence criteria, to the Specialist Categories where entry forms have a particular focus such as Diversity & Inclusion or Innovation. Businesses choose to enter these categories themselves as opposed to being nominated. Greg Atkins, a director of BDO and the Convenor of Judges for the Awards, acknowledges that the Business Category
entry is a challenge, probably one of the most challenging Awards processes in the country. “It requires a huge commitment from owners and forces a very thorough assessment of their business. However it sets a standard, we know that the winners and finalists in each category have been truly outstanding and deserving, and those who have been through the process as entrants have done a very thorough review of their business, and can use that framework to help level up.” Businesses who take part are encouraged to come back and give the Awards another go. Two businesses that did just that this year were Foreno Tapware Ltd, last years Supreme Winner who came back and took out the Northland Regional Council Environmental Excellence Award, and tlc4u2 who won the Northland Document Solutions– Ricoh Excellence in Large Business category last year and then came back to take the Supreme Award this year. Three Awards categories are nomination based, including the More FM Northland Customer Choice Award, the public nominates a business, they believe offers an exceptional customer experience. The Winner for 2022 was Kerikeri hospitality stars Feast NZ Ltd.
“... we know that the winners and finalists in each category have been truly outstanding and deserving ...” The other two nomination categories are the only ones aimed at individuals. The Ministry of Social Development He Poutama Tai Tamariki Youth Employee – Employer Award and the Northern Advocate Business Hall of Fame. The Youth Award focuses on young people who have overcome adversity or challenges in their life and are demonstrating excellence in their work. This award also recognises the role of the employer in creating conditions that foster success and sustainability. The winner this year was Eryn Grace Vesey of Northland Disabled Charitable Trust (known as Forget Me Not Adult Day Care Centre). The Hall of Fame award acknowledges a local business person who throughout their career has demonstrated outstanding service both to their industry and the wider Northland community. The Awards have been running for 45 years, their purpose is twofold, to nurture and encourage local business to strive for excellence and to acknowledge and celebrate those who are consistently
achieving across the board. The Awards connects the Northland business community through the network of entrants, judges, sponsors and stakeholders. Chamber president Tim Robinson recognises that without the support of the event sponsors and partners the event could not run. “Sponsors in essence pave the way for the entire process, it speaks volumes about their commitment to the community and desire to see local businesses grow and achieve.” The same can be said of the judges and business coach who give time and expertise freely. “It’s all a fantastic ecosystem really, we have entrants who come back again, keen to do better, we have judges who were winners, winners who become sponsors, and so it goes on, that is the natural progression that tells us the process is valuable.” Entries for the 2023 NorthChamber Northland Business Excellence Awards open in April. There is no cost to enter the awards, you do not need to be a member of NorthChamber and there are significant benefits for all businesses who enter, including free independent feedback and recommendations on building business capability. You can find out more information at www. northlandbusinessawards.co.nz or email info@northchamber.co.nz.

MCNABB DECORATING STRIKES GOLD AGAIN Once again, we were blessed with receiving multiple gold Master Painter Awards for our involvement in the Hundertwasser Arts Centre project, resulting in taking out not only the Porter’s Decorative Speciality Finishes and Large Commercial Interior awards but also the Commercial Interior Master Painter of The Year award for New Zealand, of which we take much pride and are very grateful for.
W
e had the pleasure of being involved with the Hundertwasser Arts Centre project as the sole coating’s applicators. We started this contract from when it was an incomplete structure, beginning with structural steel intumescent coatings. We shortly shifted into the interior, as work was being completed ahead of us. From free flowing, hand drawn lines where the walls met the ceilings, to hand painted natural lines applied to the stairwell, cafe and learning walls gave
an eccentrically abstract perspective, a perfectly imperfect concept, as was the request of the client. Spraying out the open ceiling space above the main stairwell allowed the exposed services to disappear creating negative space and continuing the black detail line throughout the building gave a nice cohesion between the hard rendered walls and the terracotta tile flooring. Every corner you turn in visages texture and natural flowing contour lines, married with the creative undulated flooring and bespoke hand railings, the multi coloured stained and painted doors, this building is a textural and colourful delight From a multitude of blue hues among many other colours to the classic Black and White scale there’s no escape of diversity in this building. The Sea Fog and double Sea Fog Vienna lines meticulously hand drawn throughout the building conveys lighting and shadowing effects.
We take great pride and joy in our trade and always feel privileged to be able to continue to support and be part of growth in our community.
Hand painted natural flowing lines above the skirting in the galleries took the harshness of an immediate lineal change from walls to skirting. Hundertwasser was a big advocate of repurposing material and a firm believer that everyone had the potential to unleash the inner artist in themselves. This was apparent throughout the job as the bricks used outside and the reclaimed kauri floorboards that were upcycled into doors were all salvaged from the original standing harbour board building, the tilers and us were allowed to be creative with

lines, adding our own character to the building, little mementos and personal trinkets were adorned in walls throughout, a nice personal connection and reminder of their part in the project. We have thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience; we have met a lot of people through this project from the trades up and have built friendships and memories which will last for some time to come. We feel very blessed to be involved with the project and are extremely proud of the work put in and the quality of the workmanship put out. We highly recommend a visit if you happen to be in the winterless north, stop in and meet the team from Whangārei Art Museum and enjoy a beautiful meal or a cuppa from the cafe and enjoy the scenery. We take great pride and joy in our trade and always feel privileged to be able to continue to support and be part of growth in our community. So, if you’re looking to renovate, build or undertake a project, give us a call, we look forward to making your next project a McNabb one.

BEAUTY ON THE MOVE
MOBILE BEAUTY THERAPY! Beauty on the Move is a professional mobile beauty therapy business that offers a range of quality beauty services for clients on location throughout the Northland region.
We believe self-care is necessary as it is an important practice to help us be the best version of ourselves with every hat we wear.
Kirsten Williams
O
perating since June 2020, what we discovered is that mobile beauty therapy provides freedom, flexibility and a sanctuary of self-care for individuals who otherwise may not have those things. Having beauty treatments at home means you’ll have less stress, more time with your family and even more time for yourself. With Covid 19 in the community since 2020, mental health seems to have deteriorated with the panic of the new normal. Therefore the idea of a mobile beauty business providing one beauty therapist in a clients home at a time, wearing the proper PPE and getting regular RAT testing, gave comfort and security to the clients. Treatments have shown to improve mental health via the wonderful reviews we have received over the last two years in business and continue to do so. We aim to pamper everyone of all ages and walks of life and offer treatments ranging from a relaxing
massage, soothing facial, fresh brows; to a glamourous makeup and golden tan for special events! We believe self-care is necessary as it is an important practice to help us be the best version of ourselves with every hat we wear. With the minimum booking cost at $50 within the Whangarei region and $100 outside the region, our prices keep us affordable as we don’t charge a travel fee on top of our bookings. We also sell gift vouchers on our website that are sent directly to you or the person you want to treat! Just in time for Christmas.

Team Northland Petfood. Absent: Hallie Cochrane
FROM GRASS ROOTS TO AWARD WINNERS
Luanne and the team at Northland Petfood have worked hard to build a well-known business in Kerikeri. From starting as a small, online business run out of a garage, to a Northland Business Excellence Awards Winner, Northland Petfood has grown immensely in the five years it’s been operating.
S
tarting from grassroots in April 2017, Luanne set herself apart and built her business online selling premium, natural and New Zealandmade dog food & treats, shipping them nationwide to your door. Sales grew daily and a larger space was required in order to keep up with growing demand. Luanne then moved into The Merchants of Kerikeri for a couple of years where she and the team grew the product range, offering more variety and New Zealand-made goodness for cats and dogs. More staff also joined the team and they were fast becoming known as The Itchy Dog Specialists nationwide. The store and team soon outgrew their space. In June 2020, Northland Petfood moved a couple of hundred metres up the road to 12 Mill Lane where they now have a huge range of premium food, raw range, treats, supplements, toys and more. The bigger space allowed them to stock more variety - now making them the biggest pet food store North of
Whangarei. They also have a very handy 24/7 D.I.Y. Dog Wash available enabling people to give their dogs a pamper session any time of the day. The dog wash offers hypoallergenic shampoo, conditioner and even a flea treatment with hot water and a warm blow dry. Northland Petfood has also been working closely with Bay of Islands Animal Rescue, providing fund-raisers and support where they can. Bay of Islands Animal Rescue has seen a remarkable increase in pets needing rehoming in the Far North in the last two years. Providing food, blankets, and bedding and being a collection point for Summer and the team is one of Northland Petfood’s priorities. Focussing on natural, New Zealandmade products, Northland Petfood has been providing a premium service by getting to know dogs’ individual needs and offering customised recommendations and solutions to their growing customer base. Luanne and the team pride themselves on honesty and
integrity and will strive to find a solution to an issue, whatever it may be. They encourage people to bring their dogs in-store where one of the friendly staff members will take some time out to help. Earlier in 2022 Luanne and the team entered into the 2022 Northland Business Excellence Awards to ‘give it a go’. The process was an enlightening journey highlighting the areas of the business which were doing well and other areas which could be improved. They attended the awards evening on the 4th of November and to their surprise, they not only made the finalist list, but took out the Henderson Reeves Excellence in Business - Small Business Award. Growing month by month, Northland Petfood has its sights set on the future, hoping to bring more awareness and education to pet owners across New Zealand and build on the quality of products and services. Setting themselves apart as specialists, the team are continuously looking at sourcing top-quality products for you and your pet! Make sure to pay them a visit when you are in Kerikeri or visit them online at www.northlandpetfood.co.nz.

THE JUDGES AND THE JUDGING
Local accountant and director at BDO, Greg Atkins has been the Convenor of judges for the Northland Business Excellence Awards Business Category for the past 10 years, and he is pleased that this year’s event have been a return to somewhat normal for the entry, judging and awards night. “It has been awesome to get back to the usual format for the judging, and to celebrate the actual Awards night which we missed out on last year.” He does acknowledge that on the surface it looks like it’s all back to BAU, but it has still been a year of challenges. “We have seen the fatigue and really acknowledge what our business operators are up against and commend
all of those who did push through to enter the Awards. We were impressed by the diverse range of entries across industries, heart-warming to see some of the social enterprise taking place, and pleased to see good representation from across Northland too, with several of our winners and finalists coming from the mid and far north. A very big thank you to my fellow judges, reading entries, researching organisations, then the business visits are all a mammoth task, it can take up days, and it’s time out of their businesses too. I deeply appreciate the professionalism and level of detail they bring to the process. The debate that goes on in selecting our final winners is a sign of

their desire to get it right and uphold the standards of the award process.
