I
have to say one of the best things about returning to study as a senior was my student pass! I could get discounted movies, discounted books, discounted just about everything. When the person behind the counter asked for my gold card, I flashed my student pass, and I loved it! I decided 14 years ago to attend cooking school, something I had always wanted to do, and it turned out to be one of the best life decisions I have ever made. Yes, I have heard people say, “you are too old to go back to school” and “what are you going to use that diploma or degree for?” My reply is the same as it was back in 2010, “you are never too old to learn.” I was the oldest in the class but fitted in fine as we were all there to learn how to cook the French way! I have never laughed so much, made so many great friends, learnt so much and realised that yes, I too can make a wonderful souffle like Julia Childs! Learning online may not be quite as exciting as hands on, but it is another great way to learn whatever your age and then there are Community Education classes that are run in some areas. I recently did a day learning the art of water colouring painting and I found I actually could produce something good enough to have framed. . . where that inner artist came from, I have no idea, but it was one of the most
relaxing days I have experienced in ages! Some older students may want a change in career, some may have become redundant from a previous job, and some may just want to learn something new. Check out if there are any grants or scholarships available for the older student returning to school to retrain. It’s never too late to begin your educational journey and going back to school at 60 plus is a decision to be lauded. As an older student, learning a new skill, gaining a certificate, diploma, or a degree, can help you transition to a new career, offer advancement in your current job, give you a renewed sense of purpose, or can even broaden your knowledge about the world around us. It is exciting, keeps you young and your brain active. . . go on. . . .be part of it!

EDUCATION TRAINING Empowering Futures
T
hree rangatahi have reflected on their time on Mauri Mahi, Mauri Ora. Although their journeys have been very different, their results are all awesome. Bailey Munro at 16 years of age already knew he wanted to get work asap and wasn’t interested in any training program. “My grandmother actually dragged me there (to course) without my knowledge”, but after being with Tawhana (Kaiwhakahaere) everything changed. “He brought me back to reality and helped me realise what I needed to do and how”. From the same intake, 17-year-old Dijonai Romana wasn’t sure about what she might enjoy for mahi. “When I started the program I actually settled into our small group really fast”. We did a lot of different life-skill activities, but the most valuable one for me was learning to write a CV. I didn’t really know how to construct a CV or the importance of promoting yourself through it. Another tauira Storm Ofanoa had a passion to pursue a business idea. “I didn’t like school but I wanted to get an education” so my partner and I enrolled with Tawhana. We learnt everything from budgeting and the banking system through to nutrition, licensing, personality types and how those relate to certain jobs. Bailey is currently working as a scaffolder, Dijonai is employed working in a retirement village and Storm is working casually and continuing with study in digital design. Bailey and Storm have both attained their learners

licenses and all three are training up for their restricted drivers licences. When asked, “would you recommend Mauri Mahi, Mauri Ora to other rangatahi?” All three agreed. “Tawhana is serious about assisting young adults with their futures and ensuring they are prepared”. “My whānau are so proud of me..., I 100% recommend this for those who want to work towards their passion”. Rangatahi attend an 8-week intensive phase that includes budgeting, driver licensing, first aid, cooking as well as CV, cover letters, job hunting and interviews. Tauira graduate into the manaaki tangata phase (long-term one-on one support) – this allows rangatahi to also consider extra-curricular activities such as sport, social connection or even a career change. Mauri Mahi, Mauri Ora is funded by He Poutama Rangatahi and facilitated by Ngā Ara Tōnui. If you are interested in finding out how to enrol in our Feb intake, call Tawhana (0800 MAHI UP), or come down to the site at Te Ora Hou Northland, Corks Rd, Tikipunga, for a korero.

Summer students: Fresh faces gain experience at Northland Regional Council Northland Regional Council’s Summer Student Programme is underway with 18 tertiary students from various educational backgrounds gaining priceless hands-on experience in their respective fields.

“I know our teams appreciate the support and different perspectives the students bring. The programme has been running for sixteen years and in that time, we’ve had several students stay on and gain full-time employment at council, so it can be a great way to get your foot in the door.” NRC also offers its Tū i te ora Scholarship to support students to undertake study, research, or training that relates to council’s regulatory and environmental functions. Scholarship recipients receive financial assistance and paid work experience at council; five of this year’s summer students are scholarship recipients. Climate Action intern and scholarship recipient Ruby Crawford, who is studying towards a Bachelor of Science majoring in Geography and Environmental Sciences, says the work experience at council has been incredibly beneficial. “It’s shown me how my studies are applied in real life situations and gives me insight
into what jobs are available when I complete my degree. If you get the opportunity to gain experience in your chosen field of work before you finish your degree, I say go for it. NRC is a great place to gain hands-on work if you have passion and interest in the environment.”
Applications for the 2024 round of scholarships open on Friday 26 January. Those interested in applying are encouraged to visit scholarships.nrc.govt.nz

tudents have joined teams from across council, including Biodiversity, Biosecurity, Climate Action, Land Management, Customer Services, and Finance. Biodiversity intern Stephanie Membery is enjoying her experience at council, especially the opportunity to gain hands-on experience and put her learning into practice. “I’ve been studying environmental management at NorthTec and I’m starting a Bachelor of Applied Science majoring in Biodiversity Management. My work at NRC includes monitoring kākahi (freshwater mussel) in urban streams and using this information to develop protocols for local community groups, informing our freshwater and biodiversity work.” Council’s group manager of corporate services and deputy CEO Bruce Howse says the Summer Student Programme is beneficial to both council and the students.
STUDY TO HELP STUDYING The environment? Let us help you reach your full potential! We’re awarding six scholarships, each include $4000 and paid work experience at council next summer

CADETSHIP PROGRAMME
Powering careers locally and nationally
As investment in electricity transmission and distribution infrastructure ramps up across Aotearoa, Northpower’s cadetship programme develops skills and capabilities to meet demand. On completion of an eight week, fully paid, employment preparation course designed and delivered by Northpower and its partners, trainee cadets take up roles with Northpower across the North Island as apprentice Cable Jointer and Distribution Line Mechanics.
Meet some of our recent cadets...
Lara
TANOOJ
Tauranga’s Lara Sheedy is stoked to have secured a Cable Jointing Apprenticeship with Northpower after completing an eightweek cadetship. “I’d previously done a ‘Girls with Hi-Vis’ day at Horizon Energy which I really enjoyed. I liked how hands-on it was and realised a career in the electricity sector was going to push me mentally and physically. From that day I decided that’s what I would do, which was great because until that point I hadn’t discovered what I wanted to do after finishing high school.” Being the only woman on the programme was no problem at all for Lara, who thrived in an environment that values equal opportunity.
For Auckland’s Tanooj De Silva, the cadetship programme offered a career change. 27 year- old Tanooj was working as a gaming technician at Sky City after completing an electrical engineering degree at Unitec in 2021. “The Northpower Cadetship has been awesome. The practical and the theory we have been exposed to has been great and our tutor Richie Ashby has shown us the practical techniques required to do our job well. Northpower is a really reputable company where I can grow my career while I also study, gain more experience and over time work towards other opportunities in the company perhaps even a team leader one day!”
CRUZ Cruz Coburn from Hamilton, is loving his new career. Since leaving school Cruz has dabbled in several jobs including labouring, plastering and two years as a barber before joining Northpower’s cadetship programme. After the initial eight weeks of upskilling and learning, Cruz is loving his new career with Northpower’s Hamilton business. “I chose a Distribution Line Mechanic apprenticeship and my Dad works on overhead lines too. The more we got to go up power poles during the cadetship, the more I liked it. It was great to learn good habits and proper ways to do things with Northpower.”
“The cadetship programme encompasses Northpower’s culture, behaviours and work ethic while developing and nurturing the people and capability needed to meet the industry’s electrification and decarbonisation goals.” Andrew McLeod – Northpower Chief Executive
