Thepastyearhadbeenoneof massivechangeattheshowgrounds withanewmanagementteamcoming intotakeoverfromEricaMcNeil.“Over Erica’snineyearsastheshowmanager

TakingoverfromEricaisLanaDavy whowasalreadybringingherownstyle totheeventand,accordingtoSimon, addingalotofvaluetotheA&P.
“Withchangecomesopportunityand wehavebeenabletolookathowthings havebeendonethroughadifferentlens withnewpeople.Itisexcitingthetalent
wehavebroughtonboardandjustwhat wecandowiththeshowgoingforward tokeepitgoingasastrongnationalA&P event,”hesaid.
“It’sbeenatoughfewyearsfor Tairāwhiti,andeveryoneisseeingitand feelingitbutitcontinuestoamazeme thatnomatterwhat,thevolunteerwork andcommunitysupportcontinues.There issomuchheartoutthere.Itjustblows youaway.”
Forasmallcommunity,Simonsaid theregioncertainlyknewhowtopull togetherwhentimesweretough.
“ThisisoneofthelastAandPshows inthecountrythatispredominantlyrun
byvolunteerswhodoanincrediblejob. Ourexecutiveandcommitteebringa realflavourtothecommunitytotheshow andjustrolltheirsleevesupandgeton withit.Ithinkthewholecommunityreally appreciatethat.”
Alreadyonthedrawingboardwere plansfornextyear’s150thyearsince thefirstshowwasheld.“That’sgoingto beabigonebutfornow,allourfocus ison2024andmakingthatoneforthe recordbooks!Iamjustlookingforwardto growingonwhatwedidlastyear.”

Inhisquietandratherunderstated way,Andydownplaysthesponsorship thathasseentoiletsrebuilt,curtains hungintheeventcentreandmanymore thingsthataresoessentialtotherunning ofboththeshowgroundsandtheshow. You’veprobablyseenthesignonthe FarmersAirEventCentreandafew othersdiscreetlyaroundthegrounds.
“Theshowisaplacewhere everyoneishappy,”hesays,“andI’m happytohelpmakethathappen.”
AndyStevensonAviation,FarmersAir 2024LtdandKiwiAirLtdareproudto contributetotheannualgathering.“You wouldn’twantittofallover.Theshowis aboutbringingtownandcountrytogether. It’sahappydayforthedistrictandthat takesmoneytomakeithappen.”
Andyisthefirsttosayhe’snotalocal, having“only”movedtoTairāwhitiin1975 viaWairoaandRuatoria.Agroupoflocal farmersformedFarmersAirPartnership in1979.
Andyisatopdressingpilotfromway back–since1965tobeexact.Itwasthe late1970sandtheindustryhitarough patch,whichledtothecreationofthe FarmersAirPartnership.“Theybought
anaircraftandIflewitforthem.There were21farmersinvolved–thatwasall youwereallowed.”Thentimesgottough againandIboughtthefarmersout.
“Asacommunitybusinessitmade senseforustobeinvolvedwiththeshow. Allofthefarmerswereinvolvedwiththe showtooinsomeway.Thiswasawayof givingbacktothecommunity.”
Overtheyears,FarmersAirhas generouslysupportedmanyruralefforts andorganisations.“Buttimeshave changedandthoselittlecommunities arenotthereasmuch.Wegetaskedfor moneyintownbutourclienteleisoutin thecountryandwearehappytosupport themwherewecan.”
Hisownchildrenandgrandchildren havelovedtheshowovertheyears andwhilesomearenowgrownup,they lovetobebackintownfortheOctober celebration. “It’sallaboutthekidsreally. Whatelseintownisasimportantasthe show,”saysAndy.”
“Ithasbeenabittoughsomeyears, butifyoumakeacommitmentyousee itthroughright?It’sawell-runoperation –(formermanager)Erica(McNeil)dida greatjobandIknow(newmanager)Lana (Davy)willcontinuethat.It’sarealteam effortandweareveryhappytosupport it.”Heencouragedallto“justcomeand enjoyandhaveahappydayout”.
ItcouldbesaidthatLanaDavywillbeoneofthemostexcitedtowalk throughthegatesontheopeningdayofthe2024show.She’sthe newgeneralmanagerforthePovertyBayA&PAssociation,taking overinAprilfromEricaMcNeil.
“IthasbeenbaptismbyfirebutIamlovingit,”saysLana,whogrew upabigfanoftheannualshow.“Iamverykeentogetmyfirstshow undermybeltandthatwillgivemeachancetohaveabetterlookat whatthe150yearcelebrationsin2025maylooklike.”
“IknowIhavebigRedBandstofillbutIam definitelyupforit,”saidLana.“IknowIhavethe experienceandpassiontodriveusforward.Iam absolutelyenjoyingthechallenge.”
EventshavelongbeenLana’s‘thing’.Sheishugelypassionate aboutthepeople,place,businessesandcommunityinherhometown.
She’sbeenoutandaboutmeetingsponsorsandsupportersofthe show.“Withoutoursponsors,ourshowjustwouldn’thappenandthank everyoneofthemfromthebottomofmyheart.Theyhaveallbeen incredibletodealwith.”

EquestrianstewardfortheshowAngeDolmansaysitis “perfect”.“Thegroundsarelookingamazing,”shesays. “Ahugeamountofworkhasbeendoneforthecompetitors, sotheyknowtheyarecomingtoafantasticgrasssurface.”
Oneofthosestar-billingislongtimeshowcompetitorJulie Davey(Hawke’sBay)andLTHolstFredawhoarefreshback fromasuccessfulcampaigninAustraliawheretheywona CSIW1*-worldcupqualifierandwerefourthandsixthintwo others.
TheEastCoastWoolsHorseGrandPrixhasaprizepoolof $5000with$1000onofferfortheAMSSaddleryPonyGrand Prix–bothareheldonSaturday.

There’sbeenachangeinshowhunter,withthehorses competingonFridayandtheponiesonSaturday.LocalKirsty MacKintoshisdesigningthecourses.Aspecialclassformany isWednesdayafternoon’sChristineBeatsonMemorialthat wasintroducedtohonourtheformerlocalriderwhodiedin 2018.
TherewillbeplentyofTairāwhitiridersouttheretakingpart tooacrossallthedisciplinesandgrades.TheTomorrow’sStar classisforlocalchildrenupto17whodon’tcompeteinthe
otherrings.NewtothescheduleisYesterday’sStars forthe17andover.“It’slotsoffunfortheseriders whoaremostlypleasureriders,”saysAnge.
Thedressagecomponentoftheshowhasalready beenrunwithshowhunter,showjumping,leadpony classes,hunterjumpingandworkinghuntersand showingallrunningoverthethreedayswhichstart onThursday.

Sotheexecutivegotthinking.“We wanttobringstockbacktotheshowbut notwherefarmersarespendingayear preppingforit,”saysshowexecutive memberStephenThomson.“It’skeeping alittleruralNewZealandaliveatthe A&PShow.”Sowhilethesectionsarestill veryhotlycontested,there’smorethan alittledaboffuninvolvedtoo.Leading thewayinthefunstakesisprobably thePGGWrightsonSwineCommander Competitionwhichhas$1000onoffer fortheoverallchampionpigand$250 apieceforthebestporkerandbest baconer.
Stephenencouragespeopletomake suretheirpigsarein“mintcondition” andlookinggoodforthejudging.“It’s goodforalaugh,”hesays.“It’soneof those‘feeditupandseehowyougo’ things.”Therehasbeenabitofachange fortheSupremeHeiferChallengewhere

Plentyofeffortgoesintopresentinglivestockfortheshow,whetherit beforthefundress-upcompetitionsorthefarmoreseriousbreeding classes.
AmandaMathersandherfamily havealwayslookedforwardto theGisborneShow,butshe’s approachingthisonewithalittlesadness.
Since2012she’sbeenheadsteward ofthehomeindustrysectionandbefore thanhelpedhermumAlexiaEnglishwho wasastewardfor40-plusyears.
Amandaandherfamilyhavenow movedtoNorthlandbutsheishelping hersuccessortofindherfeet.
Itwillbethefirstyearneitherofher parentsAlexiaandBruce,herhusband SpudortwoolderchildrenAngelaand Patrickhavehelpedher.Shehasonly evermissedasingleshowinherwhole life.
“Idofeelalittlesad,”shesays.“Ithas beenahugepartofmyfamilylifeforso long.Mymumwasastewardforsolong andIusedtocomeouttohelphertoo. SinceItookoverithasbeenarealfamily affairwithmymum,dad,husbandand childrenallhelpingout.”
Thisyearjustheryoungestson Charliewillbebyherside.
“Itisamassivejob,”saysAmanda.“I havekeptdoingitbecauseofmypassion forhomeindustriesandcraft...itisjust inmyblood.Ilearnttocrochetandknit ataveryyoungageandhavetriedmost formsofcraftwork.”
Thehomeindustrieshasbeenher babysinceshetookiton.“Ihavealways strivedtoimproveandincreasenumbers eachyear.Itgivesmegreatpleasureto seetheyearlydisplayofhomeindustries goupfromanemptyconcretefloored halltoafinedisplayforeveryoneto enjoy.ThejoyIgetfromseeingthe delightfulsmilesonchildren’sfaceswhen theyseetheirowncraftworkdisplayedis immense.”
OvertheyearsAmandahaswon plentyincludingcupsandevenabestin sectionawardonce.Herchildren,who arefourthgenerationcompetitorsatthe show,havealsodonewell.“Myfortehas beengeneralhandcraftbutnowadaysI domoreknittingthananythingelse.”
ButtheShowholdsaveryspecial placeinherheartforallsortsofreasons. “Ihavealwaysenjoyedthecommunity vibe,thecountrymeetstownie,thethrill ofallthevolunteerhoursthatgointo puttingonafabulousshowforeveryone toenjoy.”
Herfavouritememoryisjustthat. “ItwaswalkingaroundtheoldHallof Industriesasweusedtocallit,”shesays. “It’snotthereanymore.Ithaddouble sidedwoodandglassdisplaycabinets thatranthelengthofthehallandyou usedtowalkalongonadirtfloor.Ithad sucharusticcountryvibetoit.”
Amanda’shusbandmovedto Northlandforworkearlyintheyear,and shejoinedhimfourmonthslater.“Itwasn’t somethingIthoughtwouldhappenatthe endofthe2023showbuthereweare.”
However,she’sstillbeenfully committedtotheheadstewardjob,
spendingmanyhoursworkingonthings intheleaduptotheshow.
“Iamgoingtomissthepeople,”she says;“Ihavetrulybeenblessedtowork withabunchofverytalentedandcaring womenandmen.Ithasbeenanhonour andaprivilegetohavebeeninvolved.”

Themulletcompetitionisthe brainchildofexecutivememberJessie Bourke.“We’restartingsmallthisyear,” shesayswithalaugh.“Therehavebeen someepicmulletsspiedoverwinter onthesportsfieldsandoutandabout aroundtown–fromyoungandoldalike!”
Whensheheardevenschoolswere hostingmulletcomps,Jessiedecided itwastimetoproudlybringitoutinto thepublicdomainattheshow.“We’re givingpeopleachancetoshowofftheir lusciouslongmulletlocksforalltosee.”
Thecompetitionwillbeheldonthe
OvationLawsonFieldLawnat10amon Saturday,rightafterthepetlamband goatcompetition.Thereareribbonsand cashonofferforthewinnersofthetwo categories–juniorforthe16andunders, andseniorforthe17andovers.There’s noentryfee,justturnuponthedayang bepartofthefun.
TheNovusShowusYourCrackUndie RunisbeingheldonSaturdayafternoon ataround3pmaftertheGrandParade. OrganiserTomLanesaysit’sallgood cleanfunandencouragesmenand womentoturnupinthehopesofhunting downthecashprizesforeach.

“Thisyeartheschoolhasenteredthe homeindustries,takingwhattheywould normallydisplayintheirownHallof IndustriesatPetDay,”saysCheryl.“They willstillhaveasmallerversionatschool butallarelookingforwardtoseeingtheir itemsdisplayedforhundredstosee.”
Lastyeartherewerejustnine studentsatschoolontheFridaywiththe othersheadingtotheshowwiththeir families.“Wesurprisedthembymaking theshowaschoolouting,”saysCheryl. “They’reallveryexcitedabouttheshow butitisalsoachanceforthemtodevelop abetterunderstandingofwhateventis allaboutoutsideofsideshowalleyand therides.”
