Hawke’sBayRegionalCouncilis committedtohelpingfarmers manageerosionandimprove biodiversityandwaterqualityontheir land.Anexampleofthiscanbeseenin theworktheCouncilhasbeendoingwith theKairākauLandsTrust(KLT)(NgāiTe Oatua,NgātiHikatoaandNgāiTamatera) ontheirwhenua–KapitiStation.

Almostfouryearsago,KLTtookonthe opportunitytofarmKapitithemselveson behalfoftheir370shareholders.Theland hadbeenleasedsincetheearly1850’s. Thecrownacquiredmuchoftheadjoining countryfromitsoriginalMāoriownersin the1851WaipukurauBlockpurchase.

Ahelpinghandforfarmers

WithagrantfromtheProvincialGrowth Fund,theTrustwasabletoinvestinfarm infrastructure,includinganextensivewater reticulationsystemwhichhasgreatly helpedwithpaddocksubdivisionand grazingmanagement.

Kapitiruns2500breedingewesand200 cattleonaround800hectaresofgrazing land.Thebalanceofthe1507hectares blockismadeupofproductionforestryand retiredland,includingnativebush.

AfocusofKLT’smahiistoimprovethe waterqualityintheirstreams,manage erosionandprotectremainingbiodiversity areasandwāhitapusites.

Therearetwomainawa(streams)running throughKapiti;theWaihopukiawhich emergesfromspringsonthefarmand flowsouttotheseaatKairākauBeach, andthePōnui(whichjoinstheMangakuri streamtoformtheManawarākauRiver).

TheHawkes’BayRegionalCouncil hashelpedtofence16hectaresofthe WaihopukiaGullyfromlivestockandferal deerandgoats.BydoingsotheCouncilis helpingtheownersprotectararecoastal bushremnantandmanageerosion.Further enrichmentplantingisplannedwith supportfromNgāWhenuaRāhui.

KLTboardmemberWikitoriaMoore says,“Wepurchased9332nativesthis yearfromTeWaiMauriandEriha Plantingareourplantingcontractors. Itissoawesometobeabletoenable connectionforwhānauandsupport theirbusinessatthesametime.”

ThePōnuiwetlandformedwhena massivelandslideblockedthePōnui Streamin1976.AsurveybyCouncil scientistsfoundthewetlandtoberich inindigenousbiodiversity,butunder threatfrominvasiveCrackandGrey Willow.Anaerialcontrolprogrammeis plannedforlaterthisyear.

“Wejustwanttodothebestwecan askaitiakiforourfuturegenerations becauseeverythingwedonow,isfor them.Somuchhasbeentakenfrom ourwhenuaoverthelast150years,

nowisouropportunitytogivesomething backandHawke’sBayRegionalCouncilare helpingustodothis.”

CouncilPrincipalAdvisorCatchment Management,WarwickHeskethsays,“It’s greattobeabletosupportlandowners duringthedevelopmentphase.Matching landusetothestrengthsandlimitations oftheirlandbasegoeshand-in-handwith managingerosionandprotectingwater quality.”

Morethan1000seedsamples datingbacktothe70shavebeen unearthedatEITHawke’sBay CampusinTaradale.

Thecollectionfeaturesseedvarietiesof differentsizes,shapesandcoloursfrom aroundtheworld.

EnvironmentalManagementLecturerDr GlenRobertshawsaysitisathingofbeauty.

“Aspartoftheunpackingandmovingback intoourbuildingwehavecomeacrossa curiouswoodenboxwithabout1000seed samplesfromallaroundtheworld.”

Twoindexbooksthatcamewiththe collectionprovidedthecollector’snameA JEngland,anddetailsofwheretheseeds camefrombetween1978and1984.

Robertshawaskedlongservingstaff memberswhoknewnothingaboutit,and aninternetsearchyieldednothing.Withthe name,heturnedtotheWhitePages.

“IwantedtoseeiftherewereanyEnglands aroundinHastings,soIlookedthroughthe WhitePagesandjustrangafewpeople. Eventuallyhisson,DarrenEngland,rang meback.”

DarrenEnglandsaysheknewhisfather, whopassedawayin2016,haddonated thecollectiontoEITandafterthefloods, wonderedwhathadhappenedtoit.

“It’snicetoseethelegacyiscarryingon.”

Hisfatherworkedinthegrainandseed industryanduponmovingfromAustralia toHawke’sBay,ranthegrainstorefor WrightsonNMA.

“Irememberwhenwewereyoung,we’dbe drivingsomewhere,andhe’dstopthecar andjumpafenceandgrabsomeseedsoff something.Hewasalwaysonthelookout foroddseeds.”

Darrensayshisfathermadethewooden standsandcasefromscratch.

“Ithinkitwastoogoodtogetridofitand noneofthefamilywanteditsohethought EITcoulduseit.Hejustwantedittostay localIthink.”

HorticultureandEnvironmental ManagementLecturerGerardHenrysays thecollectionis“fairlyunique”.“Imean, itmaynothavebeenanuntypicalthingto havetakenpartinbackinthe70sandeven inthe80s.Butforittohavesurvivedand forustofinditnowisprettyrareI’dsay.”

Robertshaw,whoteachesbiosecurityand soilsciencecourses,saystheresearch opportunitiesareendless.Hehasalso spokentoMasseyUniversitywhichhasan extensiveseedcollection.

“Wecandoalotfromlookingatthe viabilityoftheseedsafterallthistimeto lookingatDNAchangesovertimebetween varietiesthenandthevarietiesnow.And attheveryleastit’sateachingresourcefor us.”

MastitisinewesissomethingI’m suremanyofyouhavebattledwith overtheyears,itisaconditionwe areveryfamiliarwithincattle,especiallyin thedairysector,butwearelessaccustomed totreatingitinoureweflocks.Thisseason wewillpotentiallyhaveafewmorecases presentedtouswhencomparedtoother seasons.Thiscanbeduetothequality ofgrass(here’shoping)wehaveoverthe lambingperiod,lendingtohighermilk yieldsinyourewes.

Similartootherspecies,mastitisinewes isaninfectionoftheudderthatcauses swellingandinflammation,ultimately compromisingthetissueresultingina defectiveudder,orinbadcases–the infectionwillspread,andtheewecandie withinanumberofdays.Twinbearingewes –orewesonhighqualitypastureingeneral areatahigherriskduetothehighermilk productionandhigherdegreeofdamageto theteatsfromhavingtwolambssuckling them,asareewesinhigherstocking densitieswherethereisahigherriskof bacteriaenteringuptheteatcanal.

Signsthataewehasmastitisareredness andswellingoftheudder,initiallyitwillbe red/purpleandhotbutachroniccasewill feelcoldandhard.Theewewilloftenbe offcolour,bewalkingstifflyduetopainin

theudderandwillgenerallyisolateherself fromtheflock.Thelambscanalsobean indicatorastheywillnotbegettingmilk andwillappearunderfed. Thetwobacteriathataremostoftenthe causeofmastitisinewesareoftenresistant toanumberofourcommonantibioticsand becauseofthisitiswidelyacceptedthatthe chanceofcuringthecondition islow,andtheewewilllikely losethehalfthathasbeen infected.Itisimportantthat thecorrecttreatmentisgiven quicklysothatwemayhave ahigherchanceofsavingher (andtheotherhalfofherudder) sothatshemaycontinuetorear thelambshehasatfoot.

Treatmentinvolvesantibiotic andanti-inflammatorytherapy, thelatterbeingimportantto bringdownherfeverandgive thebestchanceofsurvival toweaning.Theeweshould beseparatedfromtheflock tohelpreducespread,andit maybenecessarytoremove oneorbothofherlambsuntil themastitishassettled.Ewes thathavebeenaffectedshould bemarkedsothattheycan beremovedafterweaningas theywillbeathigherriskof developingmastitisinseasons tocome,anditislikelythatthe

affectedhalfwillnotproducemilknext season.

Preventionoptionsareverylimitedbut checkingtheudderandteatsforlumpsand bumps4weeksafterbeingweanedisthe besttimetodetermineiftheewehashad mastitisandislikelytohaveanongoing permanentproblem.

Typically,acommercialflockwillfind2-8% ofeweswithalumpintheuddersomaking thisanannualcheckupisvaluable.

PāmupupsdotheirbitforMasseyNZ workingdogs’project

Morethan200workingdogsfromPāmufarms aroundthecountryarethefirsttoprovide theirDNAtoMasseyUniversityforaproject toprotectthefutureoftheNewZealandworkingdog breeds.

Theproject,ledbyProfessorMattLittlejohnatMassey’s ALRaeCentreforGeneticsandBreeding,seekstolink workingdogs’DNAtotheirhealthandperformance.CofundedbyMPIthroughtheSustainableFoodandFibre FuturesFund,theprojectissupportedbyPāmu,Focus Genetics,andotherindustrypartners.

ThefirstphaseofdecodingwhatNewZealandworking dogsaremadeofisinthebag,withbloodsamples, cheekswabsanddetailedquestionnairesoneachdog gatheredforanalysis.Whilegeneticworkhasbeen carriedoutonmanypetbreedsofdogsaroundthe world,it’sthefirsttimeNewZealand’suniqueworking dogshavebeenmapped.

DrMelissaStephen,SeniorResearchOfficeratMassey University,explainsthattherearealreadyknown medicalconditionsshowingupinsomehuntawayand headingdogs.Forexample,manyshepherdshave expressedaninterestinconditionsliketwistedgutin huntaways,andifanimalsgeneticallysusceptibleto suchproblemscanbeidentified,thisinformationcan helpbreedingdecisionsinthefuture.

“Havingthegeneticinformationfromscreeningcan helpfarmersbreedfromthebestofthepackandavoid passingonhealthconditionstothenextgenerationof puppies,”shesays.

Therearetwopartstotheproject.Thefirstuses genomesequencingandrequiresbloodsamplingofthe dogs.ThisapproachgivesaveryhighresolutionofDNA whichmeans“everysinglerungontheDNAladder”can beanalysedforhiddenproblems.

“Thismeansthatbreedersofworkingdogscanhavethe informationtheyneedonadogthatlookshealthybut carriesarecessivegene,tomakesuretheyaren’tbred withanotherdogthatcarriesthesamerecessivegene thatwillthencauseproblemsintheiroffspring.

“TheotherthingthatwecanlookatwiththeDNA sequencingresultsishowmuchinbreedinghasbeen goingon,andtoquantifytherisksassociatedwiththis,” DrStephensays.

ThirteenPāmufarmsofferedtheirdogsforblood andcheekswabsamplesfortheproject.Alongwith thesamples,photosandmeasurementsofthedogs weretakenandshepherdswereaskedtofillouta questionnaireforeachdog.

Overthenextcoupleofyears,theprogrammeaimsto getmorethan2,000cheekswabsfrommoreworking dogs.MasseyispartneringwithAncestry.comtoprovide thegenotypesforthesedogs.Thisinformationwillbe usedtolookforgeneticlinkswithworkingperformance, theincidenceofknowngeneticdiseasevariants,aswell astobetterunderstandtheheritageofourdogs.

TheMinistryforPrimaryIndustries(MPI)is investinginthedevelopmentofanintegratedpest managementapproachtosafeguardNewZealand’s maizeandsweetcornindustriesagainstfallarmyworm.

"We’recollaboratingwiththeFoundationforArable Research,ProcessVegetablesNZ,VegetablesNZInc, andgrowersonmanagementandmitigationstrategiesto helpreduceproductionlossesandenhanceresilienceto thisinvasivepest,"saysBiosecurityNewZealanddeputy director-generalStuartAnderson.

"Togetherwe’lldevelopsomereallygoodtoolsforgrowers, includingestablishingsurveillancenetworksonanational scale."

FallarmywormisbelievedtohaveblownovertoNew ZealandfromAustraliaafteracycloneinearly2022.After ayearofbattlingthepest,MPIandindustrypartners agreedtoclosetheresponseandshiftthefocustolongtermmanagementofthepestbyindustry.Fallarmyworm hasthepotentialtoimpact72,490hectaresofmaize,with anestimatedvalueofmorethan$480millionand3,320 hectaresofsweetcornproduction,withanexportvalueof $36.9million.

"Wedon’tknowwhatthefullimpactofthefallarmyworm incursionwillbeinthefutureasitdependslargelyonour wintertemperaturesandsuitablehostplantsintheabsence ofmaizeandsweetcorn,"saysAshleyMills,biosecurity officer,FoundationforArableResearch(FAR).

"Forinstance,inareaswithwarmerwintertemperatures suchasNorthland,theinsecthasthecapacitytooverwinter andsurviveallyearround.Withwarmingtemperatures,we mightexpecttheproblemtogrowyearonyear.

"Partofourresearchwillbetoidentifygapsofknowledge aroundthewintergrowingseasonanddispersaloffall armyworm.

"We’llproducemodelsandcomeupwithearlywarning toolsforagronomistsandgrowers,sotheyunderstand whentheyneedtoemploytheirmostintensive managementstrategies.

"There’snoone-size-fits-allsolution,andapproaches mayvaryaccordingtofactorssuchasregion,climateor soiltype.Inmostcases,encouragingbeneficialinsects willwork,butinmoreproblematicregionsorlocalities, insecticidesmightbeneeded,andthetimingofapplication willbeimportant.

"Overthenext3yearswe’llfocusonunderstandingfall armywormphenologyanddistribution,developingNew Zealandspecificeconomicthresholdsandfindinglongtermsolutionsthatreducerelianceonagrichemicals,and preservesoilhealth,waterqualityandbiodiversity."

FARandVegetablesNZIncwillhostinformationandtools forfallarmywormmanagementontheirwebsites.This willincludemodelling,distributionmaps,guidelines,and trainingvideos.FARwillalsohostworkshopsoverwinter, tailoredtoeachregion.

StuartAndersonsaysengagementwithgrowerswillbe anessentialpartoftheprogramme."Ultimately,it’sthe growersthatwillneedtoimplementthestrategiesanduse thetools.Thisprojectaimstomaketheseeasilyavailable foreveryonetouse."
