TRIP

hy not take a road trip to CHB and a wee bit beyond and see what’s on offer this summer? From Hastings take SH2 south from Hastings and head for CHB. The first recommended stop is Otane Village at 36km from Hastings where refreshments are available, there’s a Sunday market and a historic pavement walk. Download the map from https://www.hawkesbaynz.com/ Back on SH2 head south for 7km and you’ll come across the Artmosphere Gallery and sculpture garden on the outskirts of Waipawa which well worth a visit. The gallery is housed in an old homestead relocated by Sally Maguire and Helmut Hirler from Takapau in 2012 who first established the business in Woodville in 2009. Waipawa High Street has undergone something of a renaissance and is well worth a stop. There’s a butcher, supermarket, antique stores and several cafes. The CHB Settlers Museum is a local treasure and the latest exhibition, Onward to Victory, is showing until May 21, 2021. Waipukurau is close by and there are fantastic views from Pukeora Hill, artist Cefyn Gauden has his studio at the Pukeora Estate. Continue south on SH 2 for 34 km until you reach the turn off for Norsewood a heritage village settled by Scandinavians in the early 1870s. This is a fascinating

spot to spend an hour or two exploring the pioneer cottage museum, hunting for trolls, or visit Johanna’s World and explore the troll cave, have a coffee and snack or even visit the early settlers cemetery. In Lower Norsewood there’s the NZ Natural Clothing Store, the Hovding Gallery and an opportunity to feed the eels at the Wop Wops. Now you can head back for home but turn left onto SH50 and at about 12km take the road to Ongaonga. There’s a museum open only on Sunday 1-4 but it’s well worth a visit as it has several buildings to explore such as a pioneer bush settlers hut, a wool shed, an old jail and old butchers shop. The village was originally founded in 1865 and what was once a bustling community is now a quiet place. Return to SH 50 and head for Hastings (or home). The Tikokino Coutry Hotel on the way is a good place to stop for refreshments and is child friendly with an outdoor garden. Enjoy the magnificent countryside on the way home. Eventually you’ll approach Roy’s Hill and the outskirts of the Bridge Pa Wine triangle. Rejoin SH 2 just Past Briidge Pa and d Mak ke way back k to Napiier or Hastings as directed. This trip can be done in reverse order ie travel down on SH50 and return via SH2.

here’s absolutely no shortage of parks and gardens in the Bay, many of which are family oriented and perfect for a summer picnic. Cornwall Park, the oldest park in Hastings, is reminiscent of an English park. There’s a large duck pond, a Chinese garden, a hot house, splashpad for the kids and a playground, cricket grounds and club rooms. Several concerts and events are held here over the summer months and there are plenty of mature trees to provide shade. Frimley Park Rose Garden in Frimley Road is another wonderful place to visit and enjoy thousands of roses-over 5,000 of them when in season. There’s plenty of grass and mature trees for relaxation and picnics.

THE PAR ARK R

Napier Botanical Gardens, and adjoining old cemetery, are well worth a visit. Located on a hill the botanic gardens are steep but well laid out with a duck pond and aviary. The main entrance is in Spencer Road. Centennial Gardens off Coote Road in Napier, Clive Square in Napier and Marine Parade all have beautiful gardens. There’s a harp shaped carillon in Clive Square that plays a selection of tunes from11.30am to 2pm. The gardens are beautifully tended and have some interesting palm trees. It’s a pleasure to sit in the sun, admire the gardens and enjoy the music. Anderson Park in Napier is a great place to take the kids as there are all sorts of things to amuse them such as climbing

Tairāwhiti Gisborne is rich in history, culture, cuisine and adventure. Tairāwhiti means “the coast upon which the sun shines across the water”. As the first place in the world to see the sunrise each day, there’s plenty of time to explore unspoilt beaches and flourishing vineyards, connect with the welcoming people of this land and discover New Zealand in a whole new light. With a calendar of year-round entertainment and experiences to delight you, the land of the first light is a fun-filled destination that offers something for everyone. Combining culture and heritage with contemporary living and dining experiences, some of the highlights in Gisborne, the main city in Tairāwhiti, include a scenic excursion on the vintage WA165 steam locomotive, guided cycle tours in and around the region with Cycle Gisborne, a visit to the Tairāwhiti Museum and the 28th Māori Battalion C Company Memorial House, dining at The Dome Bar and Cinema – one of the top 10 coolest cinemas in the world, bites and brews at Smash Palace and Sunshine Brewery, to name a few. Cyclists, tramper’s, hunters and fishers love exploring our hinterland all year round. Some lucky ones will enjoy pulling up a fresh crayfish for dinner, catching a trout in the Motu River or chartering a deep-sea fishing boat. Highlights along State Highway 35 are the impossibly long wharf and Opoutama Cook’s Cove Walkway at Tolaga Bay, the magnificent Tikitiki church, the carvings at Mt Hikurangi, Te Waha o Rerekohu reputed to be the oldest Pōhutukakwa tree in the country in Te Araroa, catching the first sunrise

Located in Tiniroto near Gisborne, Hackfalls Arboretum is home to over 3000 species and varieties of oaks, alders, cherries, magnolias, maples and more. The collection of evergreen and semi-evergreen Mexican oak species is considered the largest private collection of oaks in the Southern Hemisphere. Hackfalls Arboretum was founded by renowned tree expert the late Bob Berry (who passed away at 102 yrs in Aug 2018) and features 50 hectares of rare shrubs and trees around natural lakes. Four hectares of original forest together with the 50ha arboretum have been protected by a Queen Elizabeth II Trust covenant since 1985. In 1916, the Berry family bought ‘Abbotsford’ which was renamed Hackfalls when Bob’s niece Diane, and husband

There are several walks such as the Lake Walk which takes in all the brilliance of the scarlet oaks and azalea garden, not to mention the glassy lakes which make Hackfalls Arboretum so unique. The Ridge Walk boasts beautiful views of the Karangata Lake and surrounding areas, including Mt Whakapunake. Visitors will pass by collections of holly oaks, magnolias, maples and rhododendrons. The Karangata Walk takes in the charming Karangata Lake and mainly comprises oaks, including the Mexican oaks Hackfalls is best known for, and also Sorbus aucuparia. There is also a short walk through native bush (in development) which is home to beautiful New Zealand birdlife that call this walk home. Admission is $10 for adults and free for children, picnic areas available. If you would like to stay – there is a homestay cottage available.
