Vantage Festival of Hockey 2017

Welcome to Hastings S ome of the world’s top hockey players are heading our way again this year; giving all of us the chance to see top flight international sports action in our own backyard. In its fourth year, the Vantage Hawkes’ Bay Festival of Hockey has become a very important and exciting part of our sporting calendar.

While the Hawke’s Bay Regional Sports Park will without doubt be the place to be for hockey players and supporters, it will also be an ideal time for our residents perhaps not so familiar with the sport to see it played at the very top level. Four of the world’s top eleven women’s teams will play for the elite Hawke’s Bay

Cup: New Zealand’s Black Sticks, Australia, the United States and Japan; games not to be missed. But it does not stop there; in all, 24 teams will play 76 games over the 10 days from March 31. As well as the teams, we also welcome the announcement the new naming sponsor:

Vantage Windows and Doors. Their support for the event is very welcome. As a Council, we congratulate the organisers on arranging this festival for 2017, and I know that all who attend will not be disappointed. Mayor of Hastings Lawrence Yule

24 teams – 76 matches come along and enjoy a festival of top class action and hockey. To all our festival sponsors, volunteers and supporters thank

you to you all for your ongoing support and contribution to our event. David Nancarrow Event Director

The Robyn Mactaggart Medal I n 2015 HBSEEC introduced and awarded a specially commissioned silver medal to the player adjudged “Best and Fairest” in the Hawke’s Bay Cup Tournament. The medal, now played for on an annual basis, is awarded in memory of the late Robyn Mactaggart who had a passion for the game and gave so much to the game as a player, coach, parent and supporter. Two Black Stick players have been the recipients of the first two medals presented. Sam Charlton in 2015 followed by Stacey Michelsen in 2016. The 100% sterling silver medal is designed and crafted by Monique Therese Design Jeweller of Havelock North. An independent selection panel appointed by HBSEEC will award 3,2,or I points to players from each match in the 2017 tournament with points accumulating every day through to the final match.

Any player receiving a red card, or more than two yellow cards, during the tournament will automatically be ineligible to win the award. Hockey NZ proud to be supporting Vantage Hawke’s Bay Festival H ockey New Zealand is proud to be working alongside HBSEEC in delivering the 2017 edition of the Vantage Hawke’s Bay Festival of Hockey. In its fourth year, the Festival is an event which has become an iconic part of the hockey calendar thanks to the hard work of a fantastic team and strong support from the local community. This year the backing of the event has gone one step further with Vantage Windows & Doors, who are naming rights partner of the Vantage Black Sticks, extending their support for the sport as naming rights sponsor for the Vantage Festival of Hockey. As part of the Festival, the Hockey New Zealand Affiliates Tournament sees the addition of the NZ Universities teams as well as the

NZ Indians to compete alongside NZ Maori, Hawke’s Bay, Poverty Bay and the National Senior Tournament XI. It will be a valuable hit out for the new-look National Squad, which is built around a core of experienced athletes with versatile defender Stacey Michelsen the most capped (216 tests). The Festival is the first step on the road to another important year which includes the chance to qualify for the 2018 World Cup as well as the FIH Women’s World League Final here in Auckland this November. It’s certain that hockey fans are in for another exciting year in Hawke’s Bay as we back our Vantage Black Sticks Women who are gunning for a successive gold medal finish!

Strong lineup for Furnware Cup T he 2017 Furnware Cup Schoolgirl Invitational tournament lineup is probably the strongest yet in the four year history of the event. We are grateful to Furnware for their continued sponsorship support of the tournament which continues to attract strong interest both in New Zealand and internationally. Participating in the Furnware Cup offers a wonderful opportunity for young women to be inspired by playing hockey alongside top class international players. The eight competing schools are split into two pools of four based on Hockey NZ national school rankings. Four Hawke’s Bay schoolsIona (as defending Furnware champion), Napier Girls High School, Woodford House and Havelock North High School

2017 Affiliates Tournament I t’s back and better than ever! The Affiliates tournament returns to the Bay in 2017 with an exciting line up of teams and players! These Teams will compete for the Dave Craven Trophy (Men’s), Margaret Hiha Trophy (Women’s) and the Derek Wilshere trophy (overall winner) across five days of intense competition. The format will see each team play each other in a Round Robin competition, followed by semifinals and finals day on Friday 7th April at Park Island, Napier. This tournament was first introduced in 2014 to increase the opportunities available for players to represent their ethnic background and to remain involved with the sport. The inaugural tournament saw some fantastic hockey played, and it was no different in 2016! Our visitors from across the ditch, the Australian

Country team, took home the Dave Craven and Derek Wilshere trophies, whilst the local Hawke’s Bay Women were victorious in the Women’s competition. The overall trophy is calculated by combining the number of points each affiliate accumulates across both tournaments during the week. This year, in addition to competition points, bonus points will be awarded for making the final and for winning their respective competitions. The tournament has an international flavour to it – in 2014, Australian Country made the short trip over to compete and they were joined in 2016 by the Australian 35+ Masters teams. In 2015 we welcomed Hong Kong. Whilst there won’t be an international team taking part in 2017, the line-up is strong with a number of NZ Junior and NHL level players competing for their teams. Local interest

has been increased with near neighbours Poverty Bay returning for their second time, and the New Zealand Universities team will compete for the first time. 2017 will see the following teams taking part: • NZ Maori • NZ Indians • NZ Universities • National Senior Tournament XI • Hawke’s Bay • Poverty Bay

At the conclusion of this tournament, the Hockey NZ Presidents XI teams are selected. These teams competed at the 2015 Fiji Quad team tournament, with the Women’s team defeating Australia Country in their final, and the Men going down to Australia Country in theirs. Good luck to all teams involved and we look forward to seeing all the supporters down at the hockey turfs!

Player Profiles Emily Gaddum chats to two players and receives some interesting answers.

Player: Rose Keddell Team: Black Sticks What is your favourite country you have toured to with hockey and why? Holland! Hockey is so big over there so there is always such a great atmosphere around the games we play. The World Cup was held in The Hague in 2014 and it was the biggest crowd I have ever played for so that was pretty exciting. There is also pretty amazing food so you don’t miss home comforts too much. What is your favourite meal before a game? It’s most likely to be something plain like cereal of some sort. I’m not too fussy but too many flavours

Hockey 101 A

re you new to the sport of hockey and don’t know a penalty corner from a red card? Then read on to learn the basics of a sport that is played in more than 150 countries worldwide. No feet! Field players are not allowed to use their feet (or any other parts of their bodies) to control the ball. Only the goalkeeper is allowed to use hands, feet, etc. to stop the ball. Ball in the air In general play, the ball cannot be raised into the air if deemed dangerous. It can be raised by using an overhead ball. A defender can use their stick at any height to receive an overhead and to save a shot at goal. Field Goals Field goals may only be scored from within the ‹circle›, which is actually a roughly semi-circular area in front of the opponents› goal. If an attacker hits the ball from outside the ‹circle› and it goes into the goal or is touched by a defender on the way, it does not count. Penalty Corner (PC) If a defending team breaks certain rules, the other team can be awarded a ‹penalty corner›. Normally this happens when a team breaks a rule within their own ‹shooting circle›, but these can also be awarded when a defender is guilty of a particularly bad foul. If

hit the ball must hit the back board. Drag flick can be any height. Penalty Strokes Most common cause is when a defender makes an offence in the circle which prevents a goal. In a penalty stroke, a shot is taken by one player and defended only by the goalkeeper. The shot is taken from 6.4 meters directly in front of the goal.

Free Hits For general offences, a free hit is given against the team which fouled. The ball is initially stationary and play will often be re-started by passing the ball to a teammate nearby while all opponents are 5 metres away. However, the player taking the free hit can also begin to dribble the ball him/herself which is called an auto play. Q & A with Hockey Community Manager at Hawke’s Bay Hockey Andrea Cullen Talk about your involvement in Hockey. I have had a broad involvement in hockey over three associations that spans 20+ years and ranges from playing, coaching, managing and umpiring junior hockey through to senior hockey, with a large contribution to women’s hockey. I have coached various teams and coached coaches alongside teams, and I have happily taken on club roles where needed. I now sit at Association level for Hawke’s Bay Hockey where hockey is moving gears in growth and interest in the region. How is the current state of Hockey in Hawke’s Bay? Hockey in the Hawke’s Bay has gone through a transition stage in recent years and is now in a strong and positive position, with the interest and participation numbers on the rise. Hawke’s Bay Hockey this year is celebrating for 40 years of incorporation and this is being acknowledged through biographies and snapshots in time of the past 40 years.

As a relatively new Hawke’s Bay resident where would you recommend visitors go? I love living in Hawke’s Bay! Some of my favourite places to visit with friends and family are the Hawke’s Bay Farmers Markets, the beautiful beaches and the wineries of course! Who is your favourite player, past or present? My favourite two players growing up were Tina Bell-Kake and Mandy Smith (Barker). I have been fortunate enough to spend some time around hockey fields with Tina during my time in the sport. What is your best hockey memory? So many memories! In more recent times, coaching my Division 4 women’s team for Southern Districts Hockey Club to League winners, Championship winners and winners of their promotion round in the 2015 season. Who is your pick to win the 2017 Vantage Hawke’s Bay Cup? Vantage Black Sticks!!
