Embracing success Welcome to the 2017 edition of Hawke’s Bay Today’s special publication which celebrates leaders in their schools. It is our pleasure to introduce these students, many of whom will go on to be leaders in our community and beyond. As children grow into young adults, our schools recognize and promote leadership and responsibility within the school environment. Pupils are given the opportunity to learn their roles in society, become Prefects, Head Boy or Girl, House Captains, Sports and School Counsellors and they take up leading roles within their respective school. This publication recognizes these students as achievers and role models: they have been recognized for their strengths and leadership skills. They provide inspiration and leadership in all facets of contemporary education whether academic, sports, culture, environment or technology.

Hastings Girls’ High School
Leaders of 2017
I am delighted to present our 2017 school leaders. New Zealand is unique in having a network of state girls’ schools that covers the length and breadth of New Zealand. In other countries of the world the ability to send one’s daughter to a girls’ school is the preserve of the wealthy. Our school leaders have grasped every opportunity that being educated in a ‘girl friendly’ environment has provided and have grown into confident and successful young women. All year 13s are leaders in a variety of spheres from sports coaching, student tutoring, form tutoring and mentoring. We are proud of their desire to ‘give back’.

It is an honour to be the Head Prefect of Hastings Boys’ High School in the year 2017. My journey at Hastings Boys’ High School has been filled with laughter, hard work, wins, losses and of course great friendships. Hastings Boys’ High School has helped me develop into the strong-minded, respect driven, proud young man that I am today. I am very excited for 2017 and the opportunities that await. I am a firm believer in perseverance, dedication and commitment. I understand that high school can be Chez-William a daunting experience, but with the right attitude and Waihi - tahitanga shared from one student to support, our ko Headboy another will enable us to achieve anything. This is living up to our school motto “Young men united by respect.” My plan as Head Boy for 2017 is to help everyone strive for success in everything they do to reach their full potential and prosperity as an individual, family, wha- nau and most importantly as a school.
Devan attended Te Mata Primary for his first 6 years of school life and then moved on to Havelock North Intermediate for Year 8 then finally to Hastings Boys’ High School to start his high school journey. This proved to be a positive choice which is reflected in the results he has achieved both in the classroom and on the playing field.
Devan Flanders Deputy Headboy
With Devan’s position this year he is hoping to become a role model, someone to look up to and be easily approachable by all students.
Latu started his schooling at Mahora Primary School and moved to Hastings Intermediate. It was only natural for him to move onto Hastings Boys’ High School for the remainder of his schooling. Latu is very proud to be chosen as Cultural Captain for 2017 and would like to inspire all students to embrace their culture and be proud students of Hastings Boys’ High School. He has colours in Sport, Academic, Leadership and Culture.
Latu Amani
Cultural Captain
When he leaves he hopes to attend Victoria Univeristy and study Sport and Criminology.
Devan has attained a Merit Endorsement in both NCEA Levels 1 and 2. Alongside this he has represented New Zealand Schools Rugby 7’s and has made a number of Hawke’s Bay Representative teams in a variety of sports.
Alex Ryder
Sports Captain
Alex started at Hastings Boys’ High School in 2013, after attending Parkvale Primary School and then Hastings Intermediate. Alex is proud to have been selected as Sports Captain. His goals for this year are to encourage all students to participate in a sport. Personally he would like to obtain an Endorsement for Level 3 NCEA, and be able to make a positive impact on the school as he finishes his journey here, trying to encourage the future leaders of the school. After school Alex hopes to study management, with Sports Management as the key focus.

WCC has been my secondary school since Year 9 and I am proud to be Head Boy this year. There are so many opportunities in sports, academic and culture here that I have involved myself in most of these areas. A highlight for me was being part of the Samoa trip last year. I am looking at the Navy as a career path, with consideration towards a gap year first next year.
My journey at WCC started in Year 9. The teachers are amazing and are constantly supporting me towards achieving my goals. After this year I am hopefully joining the Army as an Officer or Engineer. This has been something I have been focused on since I was 13. I am part of the Cadets and am now a SSGT (Staff Sargent) at the City of Napier Cadet Unit.
I started William Colenso College in Year 8, and since then my journey in this school has been amazing, especially being Head Girl this year. There are so many opportunities at William Colenso that you just can’t say no to them. One of the greatest thing about William Colenso is that every teacher is supportive and willing to help you succeed in school and in life. Next year I am hoping I will be accepted in EIT or Waikato University to become an occupational therapist or a social worker.
I have attended William Colenso College since Year 7 and am pleased to be Deputy Head Boy for 2017. When I finish school this year I am looking at having a gap year to travel and will then focus on making my way to uni to study Biotechnology.

The leadership programme at HNHS is designed to t sit alongside our broad-based curriculum. We acknowledgge the emerging trend in leadership away from the “leader”as a figure fi sitting above, and commanding others in an authorittative manner. Such a model often casts a shadow over other stud dents, who may also have leadership potential and aspirattions.
of student committees are responsible for various initiatives which contribute to the life of the school. Formal leadership positions are distributed amoungst year 13 House and Committee leaders, while numerous other year 13 students embrace the culture of servant leadership through their contribution to the peer support of our year 9 students.
We therefore encourage all of our studentss to develop the confidence to lead, by worrking hard, showing initiative and encouraging otthers. Instead of a small group of autonomous “Prefects”, a num mber

A Snapshot of School life
Totara College
Totara Colleges vision is to see our students reaching their God given potential spiritually, academically, socially and physically.
Debbie Max has been providing good stable leadership at Totara College for the past 13 years. She shows a natural affinity with the students and has a deep desire to see them reach their full leadership potential.
Joel Dean, Kimberly Fraser and Matthew Orsborn are our hard working Student Leaders. All three helped recently with a Year 8-10 Camp, including helping the students navigate about 4km of river bed. Our Student Leaders are expected to be role models of the Christian values that our College is based upon.
Totara College students band together during a Basket Ball game at the ACE Convention in Auckland.
As a result of Totara College raising $4000 dollars for World Vision with a roll of around 50 students, last year’s Student leader, Hannah Peters won a trip to “The World Vision Scholarship Week” held in Auckland.
Malachi Dean, Sara Fraser, Senita Orsborn-Edwards and Brea Hollis. Our four House Leaders provide support during House activities and are expected to be role models of Totara Colleges Christian values.
Totara College students attend New Zealand’s national ACE Student Conention in Auckland.
Judah House celebrate a win during Totara Colleges Swimming Sports. As Totara College is an Area School the senior leaders have lots of opportunities to provide leadership for the junior school.
Last year’s Student Leaders lay a wreath as part of their leadership responsibilities at Dannevirke’s ANZAC Parade.

LEADERS 2017 STUDENT LEADERS READY TO INSPIRE My name is William Little and I am very proud to be the Lindisfarne College Head of School, representing the College and the Prefect Leadership team for 2017.
YEAR 7&8 Joshua Combs
YEAR 7&8 Oscar Crichton
I know from experience that the College offers a tremendous number of opportunities. I make it one of my goals to inspire students to take advantage of what is on offer at the College, whether it be in the classroom, on the sports field, on the stage or lending a helping hand out in the community. The Prefect team is a committed group of boys who understand that being a leader is much more than wearing a kilt, receiving a title or wearing a badge. We all know that the true test is displayed through our actions, leading by example, being approachable and genuine and providing a strong sense of direction for others to follow. Our College is all about building outstanding young men and as Prefects we are all committed to this shared vision. The College is built on solid values which we will uphold. Across all our leadership roles we relish the opportunity to serve, initiate, inspire and empower our fellow students.
AIDAN Jayden Falcon
CUTHBERT Ben Frame
& Kapa Haka Prefect
We will listen to those around us: each other, our senior and middle school students, teachers and staff, to lead this great College, thereby leaving a positive footprint in the path of Lindisfarne College.
