SHOWCASE OF BUSINESS HAWKE’S BAY 2018

Optimism is plentiful T here’s an air of optimism throughout Hawke’s Bay as indicators of business confidence and economic growth are, by and large, positive. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is one indicator of well being and the latest provisional data from Statistics New Zealand shows the Hawke’s Bay’s Regional Gross Domestic Product rose $342m for the year ended March 2017, and is now worth $7.4 billion. Retail spending statistics for 3 months ending March 31 show that spending in Hastings grew by 5.2 per cent compared with the same three months last year, while in Havelock North spending rose by 6.4 per cent. The total spend in Hastings reached $66.1 million and in Havelock North turnover reached just over $34.2m. Meanwhile both Napier and Hastings CBD’s are increasingly buoyant. Napier’s CBD is home to a vibrant landscape of retail hospitality and working spaces. Occupancy levels within the CBD are high, with revitalised shopping precincts such as Emerson Street West experiencing the latest influx. Napier appeals to small to medium sized businesses looking to base themselves in the hub of the city. Modern and fresh office spaces are popping up across the upper levels of the streets with recent additions on Dalton and Dickens Street adding to a number already situated in the CBD. Hastings City is on a roll with new development designs plucked from the most successful cities in Europe to upgraded historic treasures. The renaissance of Hastings began five years ago and has now passed the tipping point. Exciting artisan boutique businesses in the east side join the traditional high street retail of the west side to complete the transformation of this dynamic CBD. Lower vacancy rates and high interest from new business has kept the city at a rapid rate of development. The new Hastings District Council Long Term Plan is heavily focussed on building an
exciting yet flexible environment to enable new business to flourish. Tararua is seeing some positive growth in its economy thanks to a noticeable upswing in retail activity, new businesses, more visitors and an increase in permanent residents to the district. After a sluggish period through to early 2017, Tararua’s economy has begun to enjoy a sharp rebound. An Infometrics provisional estimate for GDP showed noticeable growth in the district of 3.6 per cent in the December 2017 year, compared with the national average at the time of 2.8 per cent. Market view data on electronic card transactions shows retail spending has also grown in the same period by 7.1 per cent, again much stronger than the national average of 4.3 per cent. Much of this growth can be attributed to the growing number of visitors to the district and the noticeable increase in the number of out-of-towners becoming residents. Today, more people are looking at Tararua not just as a holiday destination, but as a good option for a relaxed, affordable lifestyle with all the amenities. This interest is reflected in the rise in residential building consents being issued and continuing growth in property sales. Deputy Mayor of Wairoa Denise Eaglesome-Karekare and Chair of the Wairoa District Council Economic Development Committee says Wairoa has worked hard to develop economic development activities over the last few years. “With a focus on strengthening our traditional primary industries and working to develop innovation industries, this approach to economic development, has allowed us to look at ourselves and how we see ourselves connecting to the region and the rest of the country.” “We realise we cannot do this by ourselves, and our focus will be to partner with those interested in working with us. We want to partner with central government

Retail activity has increased in Napier, Hastings & Dannevirke.
and with businesses who see the potential of our district and the wealth of resources we have here.” “We have an abundance of land and we have a great micro-climate to support primary industries and we have already started some great partnerships. We have worked with the likes of Rocket Lab and Stark Raving to show that Wairoa can
also be the home of some great innovation industries and with fibre now coming to Wairoa, this will demonstrate the potential for Wairoa to be literally connected to the rest of the world.” “So much potential exists here in Wairoa for economic development and I’m really excited about our future.”

SHOWCASE OF BUSINESS HAWKE’S BAY 2018
Introducing Dave and Aileen Howarth D ave and Aileen Howarth can’t believe their good fortune in moving to Hawke’s Bay just a few months ago. In a major lifestyle change the couple, and their two children, Dawson, 12 and Portia, 14, bought the local Karamu Holden dealership which is based in Hastings with a branch in Napier that’s expanding. They have bought a house on Napier Hill and are settling down to a busy life at work while enjoying all the attractions that the Bay has to offer in their spare time. Dave has been in the vehicle business, embracing numerous franchises, for 38 years. He’s been a staunch Holden supporter since 2002. The move to Hawke’s Bay sees Dave take on the position of Dealer Principal and Aileen as Business Manager. Aileen is a former primary school teacher so taking on the Business Manager position is an interesting learning curve for her. In her role, Aileen looks after finance, insurance and marketing. It’s the first time the couple has worked together but it’s working well and between them, and the talented support team at Karamu Holden, they have all the skills needed to best serve their customers. In taking over the
dealership the couple have retained all the staff who between them, have years of expertise in sales and service and a good knowledge of their loyal customers. Although they moved here not knowing a soul they are quickly adapting to the Hawke’s Bay way of life and are getting involved with the local sailing club, thanks to son Dawson. The couple both go the the gym before work and are enjoying all the cycling trails the Bay has to offer. They love all the cafes, the Hastings and Napier Farmers Markets and were thrilled to attend the Art Deco celebrations this year. They’ve had plenty of guests with more booked in for later this year so they will never be short of visitors! The couple are keen to meet as many people as possible and encourage existing customers and those interested in seeing more of the Holden range, new and used, to pop in, have a coffee and meet the teams in Hastings and Napier; whichever is more convenient. At Karamu Holden the team is dedicated to providing the best customer service, while supplying a great deal. “We want our customers to feel they’ve had a fantastic customer experience and that they have become a friend for life,” Dave says.

High quality hair and beauty care V ivo Hair & Beauty was founded in 2010 with one salon in Auckland. Since then the number of salons throughout New Zealand has increased to almost 100 which makes Vivo the biggest hair service provider in the country. Vivo thrives on good ideas, they appreciate elegance, innovative style and top notch service. Vivo is New Zealand owned and operated and locally there are two salons-one hair salon in Joll Road Havelock North and another offering both hair and beauty treatments in Dickens Street, Napier. Senior Manager for Hawke’s Bay Debbie Jenkins, along with the team of stylists and one beauty therapist, are passionate about helping women feel more beautiful and confident. There are several points of difference that makes Vivo Hair and Beauty stand above other salons, Debbie says. The first is the new client package menu that offers a range of services at great prices, making it much easier to be introduced to the Vivo experience. There’s a tempting range to choose from such as value packages, welcome offers and cut and colour options. The menu concept extends with cut and colour packages, cut and care and several premium packages. Vivo are so confident you
will absolutely love your service, their promise to you is ‘hair you’ll love, or your money back”. Being recently awarded ‘Best Hair Salon 2018’ for a second year running, it’s clear New Zealanders agree! The beauty and confidence-giving quality of gorgeous hair is well known, and Vivo invests a huge amount of time and energy into training their stylists to give clients the high-quality, life changing experience they are looking for. Upskilling is very much part and parcel of the culture at Vivo. Another innovation is Oxipay which lets clients spread the cost of their treatment over four fortnightly payments which makes buying your ideal package that much easier. Debbie says that this flexibility is becoming increasingly popular. In Napier there is a full time beautician offering a full range of treatments such as microdermabrasion, waxing, eyebrow shaping, brows, lashes and makeup. Clients have the opportunity to join the Vivo rewards programme and accumulate points to receive discount vouchers. If you’d like to know more about the Vivo experience take a look at www.vivosalon.co.nz, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube.

Hear again for a healthy future F rith Gray started the first nurseled, private Ear Micro-Suctioning Clinic in Hawke’s Bay more than 11 years ago. She is a very experienced nurse specialist, having completed her training in Otology with the NZ Ear Nurse Specialist Group Aotearoa before working in both the public and private sector in Auckland and Hawke’s Bay. She is a member of the Ear Nurse Group as well as the Clinical Nurse Specialist Society NZ. Though she works primarily out of the Hastings Health Centre, Frith has been providing the service in CHB for the past 11 months having moved to Waipukurau with her family. She says it was always her goal to have an independent practice where she felt she was able to make a difference. Through her practice, she has come to realise how a hearing disability – whether permanent or temporary – can seriously affect a person’s life. “Providing an expert, safe, ear treatment service can make all the difference to one’s selfesteem and confidence, as well as helping people to learn about ears,” she says. Ear Micro-Suctioning (aural toilette) is the removal of wax, infection and other debris by direct

visualisation with an otomicroscope. It is deemed best practice for safely clearing an ear canal and is usually carried out by a specially trained nurse or doctor. The use of water syringing to clear an ear is not recommended because of the high risk of trauma and infection.
Frith can diagnose and treat most acute or chronic ear problems – infections, wax impaction, discharge and foreign body removal – in both adults and children. Given her extensive experience she has developed close working relationships with many local GPs,
Frith also owns and manages an occupational health service which she founded in 2010 and is also based at the Hastings Health Centre. She and her staff contract to Hawke’s Bay businesses and nationwide occupational health providers to offer a wide range of medical based services which include: pre-employment health checks, annual health checks, vaccinations, drug and alcohol testing, and injury management. Having a one stop shop facility provides instant access and seamless co-ordination with other allied health professionals to ensure the best possible outcomes for her clients. Frith and her staff thoroughly enjoy providing this service as they can make a positive change to individuals personal health and well being, as well as better managing the safety implications poor health has for the employees and business itself: healthy staff=healthy workplace.

At Ray White we believe in results A t the heart of all effective relationships lies open and honest communication, integrity and trust. Buying or selling a property is well known as a major event in most people’s lives which is something that the Ray White Hawke’s Bay team understand. The agents work particularly hard to ensure that their clients receive the very best in terms of all round service. For Managing Director Elanor MacDonald, previously head of Leaders Real Estate Hawke’s Bay, choosing to align with Ray White Hawke’s Bay in 2016 was a carefully considered, yet solid business decision. She was impressed with Ray White’s vision for the future, industry leading technology, proven track record, and of course their incredibly powerful network of more than 1000 offices. The Ray White family has taken pride in the massive expansion of the business from its humble beginnings in 1902. List for 2016 which is a significant international accolade. They have also been awarded the Readers Digest Most Trusted Brand for Real Estate in New Zealand. Since aligning with Ray White, Elanor’s decision has provided significant advantages for clients as the Napier and Havelock North agents use the advanced platforms and digital technology to further refine their efficiency and service. Even the best technology can only compliment relationships which are at the heart of helping
clients through the process, ensuring they feel empowered with the best advice and information. This comes from being kept well informed in every area, whether buying or selling. The Hawke’s Bay team has some of the most experienced, high achieving agents in the marketplace. Their clients consistently rate them over 8 out of 10 when surveyed independently for client satisfaction. Examples of the advanced and exclusive technology offered by Ray White in Hawke’s Bay include
online marketing to targeted audiences with extremely specific factors and live reporting providing considerable and measurable detail. This ensures properties are being exposed to their actual and best market rather than just listed. The technology gives sellers the peace of mind that buyers for their property are actually aware it is available. Buying, selling or just wanting to stay informed of current market conditions regarding your property Ray White know how, they are a good choice.

Mayfair Pools Celebrating 46 years of building and renovating swimming pools 1973-2018.
F
orty-six-years after Keith Atkins, owner and president, and his brother, the late Colin Atkins founded Mayfair Pools in Hastings the business is thriving. Today Mayfair Pools are one of the largest swimming pool builders in New Zealand and have built about 14,000 pools since the company was founded. Licensed agents from throughout New Zealand have gathered at Porters Boutique Hotel in Havelock North for the 44th annual conference which concludes today. Delegates have enjoyed three days of networking, trade shows and selection of winners of the most prestigious Mayfair Pool, and best renovated pool of the year. Mayfair Pools are the only company that holds such conferences with trade displays for their licensees. Licensed Mayfair Pool agents are considered by Keith, and his partner Sue, as very much part of the family. In fact, the affinity between Keith and the agents is so strong that some agents due to retire have passed on the business to their children! All in all Keith has found the whole venture extremely
satisfying and very rewarding. The customers are great, lovely people and they all make good friends, he says. The company has an interesting history and Keith exhibits the No 8 Wire attitude to life. “If you want it go and build it yourself,” he says. He wanted a caravan in the early 1970s so built one, founded a caravan company and then he moved onto constructing swimming pools because he wanted one. “There weren’t any companies building pools at that time so if you wanted one you had to build it yourself,” Keith says. In 1970 Keith was first involved in manufacturing Concord fibreglass caravans and from this one piece fibreglass moulded caravan the Mayfair Pools system was invented although it was several years of very hard work. It is testament to Keith and Colin’s ingenuity and forward thinking that Concord Caravans are still manufactured today, although Keith is no longer involved. It was 1973 when the Mayfair Pools brand was officially launched. The design had to withstand the problems associated with earthquakes and associated ground

movement, especially in Havelock North and Central Hawkes Bay. The first commercial pools were built for the Town House Hotels in Wellington and the Travelodge Hotel in Hastings. Following positive TV coverage of the Hastings pool the company expanded nationwide and the Atkins brothers licensed the Mayfair Pools system. The first annual conference was held in 1974 at the Travelodge Motel in Hastings with approx 50 licensees and their staff attending for educational purposes.
From then it was a rapid expansion as they launched the business in Darwin following the devastation of cyclone Tracey and subsequently expanded to various regions in Australia. It was during the 1980s that Mayfair Pools expanded into the South Pacific including Fiji, Samoa, Rarotonga, and later Tonga. There are plenty of people who have tried to copy the Mayfair system but none match the quality that Keith and his agents offer. The special materials required

Local Tyre man has feet firmly on the ground H avelock North Tyre and Alignment is a busy place. Owner Greg Nicholson has worked in the tyre business for more than 30 years, and owned his own business for 25 years. Expansion of the business a few years ago led to Greg buying the property he previously rented, along with the property next door. It’s an investment in the company and secures his position in the heart of Havelock North. Havelock North Tyre and Alignment employs eight people, sponsors the local rugby and football clubs and emblazoned on their business sign, as well as the back of their courtesy car are the words “I am a supporter of local business - are you?” “We have good, local support for the business and in turn we support others. One way this happens is by a firm belief in customer service.” “We have customers ranging from the motoring public through to large agricultural contractors. The range of tyres available is huge with more than 500 car tyres and the largest number of tractor tyres in the Bay. Some of our clients
are getting 100,000 kms, which is testament to the fact we supply the best tyres in the Bay. Being privately owned means we can show clients some of the best tyres on the market not just what a franchise would stock. When a customer has a damaged tyre it takes a matter of minutes to locate a replacement on their fully computerised system and get the job underway. For contractors, time is money, so when a large piece of equipment sustains tyre damage the clock is ticking. “We have a fleet of three in our mobile service and one of them is 4WD, so we can get to some extreme locations. “It’s a unique part of the business.” Each of the fleet vehicles has a hard-wired GPS system and is monitored for ongoing jobs and completed from the office at 9 Donnelly Street. They can see at a glance which of the fleet is closest to a call for assistance and can dispatch them quickly. “Being such a long established, reputable business gives us the ability to access some of the best tyres on the market.”
The staunch belief in service is something Greg has always had. It’s a philosophy he says relates back to his growing up with a father in the ambulance service. “That dedication, that philosophy of
helping others and getting the job done has stayed with me.” Greg is committed to Havelock North and to the future of his company and his family. “We’re here for the long haul.”

stitch in time may save nine, but for Valmae Garner of Counting Stitches, there’s never enough time. Valmae took over the Mahora based Counting Stitches in spring 2016 and, with the help of husband Stu and daughter Jess, has totally revitalised, and increased the size, of the shop. She has switched the main focus away from wool to sewing machine sales and service, with great brands like Janome and Baby Lock. There’s a good range of machines displayed in the shop so customers can see which best suits their needs and demos are run by experts. It’s an inviting shop full of colours, linens and dress making
fabrics, knitting wool, cotton, embroidery silks and all sorts of bits and bobs that craft and patchwork enthusiasts will love. Husband Stu rearranged the shelving and created a new roomthe ‘habby room’ where all sorts of haberdashery supplies can be found. In addition to offering plenty of advice on sewing and patchwork Valmea runs sewing classes at the shop, which sits on the corner of Tomoana Road and Frederick Street. Since broadening the range of stock available she’s also re-kindled her passion for dressmaking which has led to her stocking dress making fabrics.

SHOWCASE OF BUSINESS HAWKE’S BAY 2018
Working together to see our economy thrive By Brenda Newth for Business Hawke’s Bay/Hawke’s Bay Business Hub
L
ast year saw a significant upsurge in overall economic growth in Hawke’s Bay, with most regional economic indicators improving over the past year. There is significant growth momentum in the region, with gains being reported in the housing construction, road construction, tourism/hospitality, retailing, transport, pip-fruit, wine, forestry and specialist manufacturing/ service manufacturing industries. The short term economic outlook for Hawke’s Bay is bright and there is a considerable amount of economic confidence about. Matariki – Hawke’s Bay’s regional economic development strategy (HBREDS) is all about getting the Hawke’s Bay economy thriving. It has bold goals: 1. To increase household incomes above the national average 2. To accelerate job growth and create 5000 net jobs in five years 3. To raise Hawke’s Bay to the top quartile in regional economic performance
Sounds simple, but there’s a lot supporting these goals, and a lot of people and organisations working together to make it happen. Matariki is multi stakeholder; involving business, Government, Councils, M-aori, health and education. Its activities and foundations are linked to grassroots actions that create jobs and raise incomes. It’s targeted, with projects tailored for specific groups and localities, and the programme is regularly refreshed and always evolving. In addition, Matariki has an integrated social inclusion objective, which is all about increasing the ability of individuals, households and whanau to participate in their communities. The benefits of greater social inclusion include reduced crime, better health outcomes, more wealth to buy goods and services and lower benefit costs.
Good progress is being made on the job creation front. The Ministry of Social Development has more than 20 projects underway across a wide range of industries, focusing on different groups such as youth, sole parents and those with health issues and disabilities. So far, one of the flagship programmes (Project 1000) has seen 523 people placed into employment (as of 23/3/18). There are a number of organisations active in the region with a focus on making things prosper and playing a part in delivering to Matariki objectives. “Great Things Grow Here - Think Hawke’s Bay” is a collaboration between Business Hawke’s Bay, Hastings District Council, Napier Port, Wairoa District Council, Napier City Council, Central Hawkes’ Bay District Council and Hawke’s Bay Airport. Its focus is on profiling Hawke’s Bay and attracting people and businesses by showcasing the opportunities to work, live and play in what is considered the best growing region in New Zealand.
The website www. greatthingsgrowhere.co.nz is a fantastic resource and contains a wealth of information about Hawke’s Bay including climate, lifestyle, people, economy, population, profiles of schools and healthcare, significant industries, and outlines of each city or district and suburbs. In addition, it details the many advantages and opportunities awaiting businesses and migrants. A comprehensive directory is also included, with contact information for just about everything. Most importantly, the Great Things Grow Here web site showcases the compelling stories about the region’s business successes, the multitude of innovative companies and organisations that make up the region’s diverse economy and how that translates into more jobs, more skills and greater community wellbeing.
Ross Beaton, founder and managing director, with Sally Gallagher, head of innovation and strategy at Hawke’s Bay Apple Press in Whakatu, near Hastings.
Business Hawke’s Bay (BHB) is devoted to creating the right climate for businesses to invest, thrive and grow in The Bay. BHB is a business-led economic development agency with a region-wide focus, working from Wairoa to Central Hawke’s Bay providing business leadership and support for business and economic growth. An independent organisation with an active, well-connected board drawn from leading Hawke’s Bay companies, Business Hawke’s Bay is funded by local councils and business partners. Deeply connected to people, the local business community, support agencies and councils, Business Hawke’s Bay works collaboratively with all councils in the region and with entities such as Callaghan Innovation, Hawke’s Bay Chamber of Commerce and Regional Business Partners. With its strong relationships BHB is able to quickly join the dots and help companies and individuals develop the meaningful connections they need for success. To support the capability and growth of businesses already here, BHB’s Hawke’s Bay Business Hub initiative provides training, support, growth advisory services and connections, to unleash the potential of businesses and help to lift the region’s economic performance. The Business Hub on Bridge Street in Ahuriri is a hive of activity with a range of rooms available for hire by businesses. It also has an expanded programme of training and support from Hub member organisations and Business Hawke’s Bay, including Hub Connect 123, designed to put people in touch with the right support and Friday Coffee Talks, offering valuable social networks, business insights, and the support to power businesses forward.

Economic outlook hugely positive By Small Business Minister Stuart Nash
L
ate last year one of the major trading banks described the Hawke’s Bay economy as a four-star economy, ‘knocking on the door of a five star rating’. The commentator suggested we were simmering, rather than steaming. I believe we will hit
five stars this year, and 2018 will be ‘full steam ahead’ for Hawke’s Bay businesses. The Bay is blessed with a combination of factors and new policies which are giving fresh impetus to economic development in the region.
As well as increasing skill levels through education opportunities, we want to address labour shortages in particular areas. We are working to improve the lists of regional skills and labour
shortages through targeted immigration policies. We want the immigration system to better match migrant skills to the regions and industries where they are needed most.
Michael Giltrap talks about his limited edition Jaguar XKSS roadster on loan for the opening of Rob Townshend’s Bayswater European car showroom, Napier.
The big-ticket item, the $1 billion per annum Provincial Growth Fund, will continue its rollout across the region. It will invest in projects to enhance economic development, create sustainable jobs, enable Maori to reach their potential, and help meet our climate change targets.
We are also encouraging young people to take up trades training and apprenticeships through our fees-free policy. This will provide a number of opportunities for keen Hawke’s Bay locals who want a practical career in, for example, the primary sector or the ever-popular building trades.
In my Small Business portfolio, we are supporting greater modernisation of the way we do business. There are more funds in the Budget for an e-invoicing framework. E-invoicing creates economic benefits through faster payments and fewer transaction costs. Fewer invoicing errors help deliver better productivity and increases cash flow certainty.
I am also pushing for large businesses to ensure they do not disadvantage small businesses through excessive payment terms. I was encouraged by Fonterra’s change of heart after my discussions with senior management earlier this year. They are now paying around 4,000 suppliers by the 20th of the month following the invoice.
The forecasts for economic growth are around 3 percent per annum on average over the next four years. The outlook for the economy is hugely positive. We are all about
thriving regions and that means getting on with building the networks and infrastructure and investing in the people and businesses we need to make that happen.

Lifestyle changes can make a difference
R
ecent studies show rising levels of myopia (short-sightedness/ blurry distance vision) may not be genetics but in fact caused by increased screen time on hand-held devices together with decreased outdoor activity. Combining Cooper Vision MiSight contact lens technology with lifestyle changes and increasing time outdoors can reduce the rate of myopia progression in children. This reduction could mean better vision without glasses or contacts
and lowers the incidence of eye diseases associated with high myopia such as retinal detachment and glaucoma later in life. Frederick Swain Optometrists consider the social benefits of early contact lens wear – such as selfperception, practicality in playing sport and social peer acceptance in addition to potential benefit myopia control MiSight soft contact lenses offer. Bay Elective Surgical Theatre, 10 years in the making. Four years ago we took the giant leap and opened the doors to our new up-scaled clinical premises in Greenmeadows – adding a full surgical suite, Bay Elective, to finally bring surgical service options back to Napier. This project was more than 10 years in the making. Finding the right location, assessing demand and most importantly, gathering the very best staff and collaborators to create a premium clinical and surgical experience. We have grown since those doors opened 10 years ago. The incredible trio of Alison, Katy and Kathy, who journeyed with us from the tiny Munroe street clinic to our current locale, have now taken well-deserved time for themselves. They have spent the past two years training and
transitioning our new team to Napier Eye and Bay Elective. We kick off the staff profiles with Anna St George. She is our front-ofhouse face and the maestro keeping the administrative wheels turning seamlessly at Napier Eye. We are very lucky to be supported by an incredible clinical team – headed up by Trudie Nettle with strong support from AmyJane Walsh, both of whom transition across to the surgical team. Trudie is a registered anaesthetic technician and Amy-Jane a registered nurse. We are awfully proud of our core team and their profiles will feature in coming issues. Their commitment to the full Napier Eye and Bay Elective experience and process is key to ensuring that every patient not only gets premium care, but also feels relaxed and secure that they are getting the very best in clinical and surgical care.
All major healthcare insurance welcome.
We work with all the major insurers. No medical insurance? No problem! We can offer other options to help you manage the cost of private surgery. Wise Words from Renly:
Remember, your beauty lies in the poor eyesight of the beholder, woof!
We have all worked very hard to create a facility which is like no other in the country. We visited dozens of other facilities both in New Zealand and overseas, with a vision of creating something that was well suited to our relaxed approach, with premium care. We have achieved this balance and are very proud that our services and facilities are among the very best in New Zealand.
Eyes wide shut Bay Elective is one of only a handful of elective day stay surgical centres that offers the full range of anaesthetic services.
More surgeries, more often. Because our surgical service is in house we are able to offer more surgeries more often. This means your accessibility to either a clinical or surgical assessment, then subsequent surgery can happen quickly, at a time that suits you.
As a surgeon there is nothing more important in knowing you have the very best around you, and our core team makes Phil’s job vastly more effective. Phil spent countless hours designing every element of the surgical process to ensure that the optimum patient outcome was our number one priority at all times. This is reflected in our DAA Accreditation and our ability to offer a full suite of anaesthetic services: local, sedation and full general anaesthesia.
Big Mac or iMac? It’s come to our attention that our Dr Philip Macdonald (aka Big Mac) has been the victim of mistaken identity. The recent arrest and conviction of another Napier doctor, also named MacDonald (iMac), has created much debate over tea cups and in clubhouses. We can assure you that our Big Mac isn’t the iMac who has been currently in the media’s eye in Hawke’s Bay.
Cataract surgery in optimum cases can be comfortably performed under local anaesthetic. It’s quick, painless and you are able to be home within a few hours of arriving onsite, however, there are times when local anaesthetic is not the best option for you. When you see Dr Macdonald for a surgical assessment, he looks at the broader picture: claustrophobia, anxiety, unable to lie flat, chronic cough or back pain are all factors that may mean that sedation or general anaesthesia may need to be considered. Just another way we can help reduce your stress.
