KaharauAnguscelebratedits50thBullSale inJune2023andwhataspecialnightitwas, celebratingwiththeirstarguestPatCooper.Pat wasKaharaus’Auctioneerfor25yearsandsoldatthe firstBullSaleinRuatoriain1973.
“ItwasincrediblyspecialhavingPatandhisson Matthewwithus,”Pennysaid.“Patstillhasthegiftto ‘setmealight’,auctioningfourbullsforusattheSale. Itwasawonderfultimetoreflectonthehistoryof Kaharauandacknowledgeallthosewhohavebeen involvedintheStudovertheyears.”

CHANGEINNAME: STUD BEEFBREEDERSASSOCIATION’S HISTORYTheGisborneCombined BeefBullBreeders’Association hasnowchangeditsnameto GisborneStudBeefCattleBreeders’ Association,andapplicationhas beenmadetohavetheassociation incorporated.
Theoriginalassociationwas formed11yearsagobyAberdeen AngusandHerefordbreedersinthe Gisbornedistrictprimarilywiththe objectofconductingabullfairforthe twobreeds.
Thebullfairhasprovedtobea successfulventureandforseveral yearsbetween180and200Aberdeen
AngusandHerefordbullshavebeen sold.Atthe1945Herefordbullsalethe toptenbullsaveraged107gns.andthe toptenAberdeenAngusbullsattheir salethesameyearweresoldforan averageof181½gns.

PLANSDELAYEDFORNEW ROSTRUMATMATAWHERO
Whilereportingthatnoheadway hadbeenmadewiththeplansto provideanup-to-daterostrumatthe Matawherosaleyards,thepresident oftheGisborneStudBeefCattle Breeders’Association,Mr.C.E. Matthews,toldtheannualmeeting oftheassociationthatthebuilding controllerhadcausedthedelay.The workwouldbecompletedassoonas practicable,Mr.Matthewssaid.
Inhisannualreport,Mr.Matthews complimentedtheHerefordsectionon thesuccessofitsfairthisseason.The Herefordfixtureherewasbecoming
comparablewiththeAberdeenAngus show-saleatDannevirkeasaleading sourceforqualitybloodstock.
Itwasunfortunatethatoutside breedershadnotmetwithanygreat successintheshow,butthatreflected greatcreditontheGisbornebreeders. Hehopedfortheshow’ssakethatthe outsidebreederswouldcontinueto sellatGisbornefairs.
Itwasthespiritofsportsmanship andentriesfromoutsidedistrictsthat madethecompetitionallthekeener andgavebuyersawiderchoice.That competitionwasessentialtothe successofthefixturefromashowsalepointofview.
Mr.Matthewsextendedhis congratulationsalsotothebreeders oftheAberdeenAngusbullsin connectionwiththeirfair.

TuriroaAnguswasfoundedin 1944byWalterPowdrellandthis yearthefamilyarecelebrating 80yearsbreedingpedigreeAngus cattle.Tocelebratethecouplerecently heldaheifersaleandsold40females tocustomersfromasfarawayasthe WaikatoandWairarapa.
Walter’sfatherin-lawREJefferson gaveWalterandhisbrideRuthfive pedigreeAngusheifersasawedding present.Walteraddedqualityfemales anddevelopedthestudfromthere. Thestudwasthentakenoverbytwoof Walters’ssons,RickandRowley,who ranthestudinpartnershipuntil2000. RickandhiswifeOliviathentookover thesoleownershipofTuriroaAngus andwerejoinedbysonAndrewwho managedthestud.Andrewandhis wifeTraceytookoverfulloperation andownershipinAugust2017.
With80yearsofexperienceTuriroa putsgreatemphasisonastrong femalebase,whichcomprisesof 250cowstothebull.Thismaternal strength,asthebackboneofthe breedingprogramenablesTuriroa toproduceabalancedgenetic package,retainingtheconstitution andstructuralsoundnessoftheAngus breed.
SuccessoftheStudsbreeding programismeasuredbythesuccess Lot1Turiroa22T649,showingmanyofthecharacteristicsTuriroabullsareknownfor.

Thecattleareallgrassfed.No cropsorlucernarefedtoanyofour cattle.Salebullsareruninmobsof30 whichiscutdownbeforethesaleto around25.Largermobsizeensures thebullsareteamplayersandhelps createmobpressure.Anythingthat
doesn’tgetonwithhismatesissimply culled.
Lookingbackoverthepast80 yearswehaveseenmanyhighlights forthestudwithamongthemost significantbeingin1972sellingthefirst NZAngusStudbulltobeexported backtoScotlandatauction.Turiroa setanAustralasianrecordofthe highestonfarmsaleaverageatthat timein2002andin2020broketheNZ recordforthehighestpricedbullsold atanon-farmauctionatthetime.
AndrewandTraceyareveryhumble aboutthestud’sachievementsand saythespecialrelationshipsmade overtheyearswithclients,breeders andagentsarewhat’smostimportant. Theyalsopridethemselvesonbeing abletoprovidebullsforallbudgets withpaddockbullsavailablepostsale forthosewhomaymissoutatauction.

Whenselectingyournewbull, theprocessshouldbeginwiththe establishmentofbreedingobjectives thathaveahigheconomicvalue relativetoyourfarm.Thisprocess,in myopinion,isthemostimportantstep butsomethingthatisalmostalways overlooked.
Somekeypointstokeepinmind
•Areastopaycloseattention to–thehead,jaw,eyes,neck, shoulders,frontlegsandfeet structure,pasternangleoffront andhindlegs,sheathandhind legandstructure.
•ConsiderEstimatedBreeding Values(EBVs).Ensurethesealign withyourbreedingobjectives alongsidethedesirabletraits.
•Overallcondition.Forsirestock toperformwelltheyneedto befedwell,yearround.Youwill seethisthroughconfirmation andmuscleformationwhich ultimatelyleadstothebulls performingtothebestoftheir ability.
