I’msuremanyofyouhave battledwithovertheyears,it is aconditionweareveryfamiliarwith incattle,especiallyinthedairysector, butwearelessaccustomedtotreating itinoureweflocks.Thisseasonwe willpotentiallyhave afewmorecases presentedtouswhencomparedto otherseasons.Thiscanbeduetothe qualityofgrass(here’shoping)we haveoverthelambingperiod,lending tohighermilkyieldsinyourewes.

Similartootherspecies,mastitisin ewes isaninfectionoftheudderthatcauses swellingandinflammation,ultimately compromisingthetissue resultingina defective udder,orinbadcases –the infectionwillspreadandthe ewecan diewithin anumberofdays.Twin bearingewes–orewesonhighquality pastureingeneralareatahigher risk duetothehighermilkproduction andhigherdegreeofdamagetothe teatsfromhavingtwolambssuckling them,asareewesinhigherstocking densities wherethere is ahigher riskof contaminationoftheudder.

initiallyitwillbe red/purpleandhot but achroniccasewill feelcoldandhard. The ewewilloftenbeoffcolour,be walkingstifflyduetopainintheudder andwill generallyisolate herselffrom theflock.Thelambscanalsobean indicatorastheywill notbegettingmilk andwillappearunderfed.

Thetwobacteriathatare most often thecauseof mastitisin ewesareoften resistantto anumberof ourcommonantibiotics andbecauseofthisit iswidelyacceptedthat thechanceofcuring theconditionislow, and the ewewilllikelylose thehalfthathasbeen infected.Itisimportant thatthe correcttreatment isgivenquicklysothat we mayhaveahigher chanceofsavingher (andtheotherhalfofher udder)sothatshe may continue to rearthelamb shehas at foot.

Treatmentinvolves specific antibioticand anti-inflammatory therapy, thelatterbeing importanttobringdown her feverandgive the bestchanceofsurvivalto

weaning.The eweshouldbeseparated fromtheflocktohelp reducespread, and it maybenecessary to remove one orbothofherlambsuntilthemastitis hassettled.Ewesthathavebeen affectedshouldbemarkedsothatthey canberemovedafterweaningasthey willbe at higher riskofdeveloping

mastitisinseasonstocome,anditis likelythattheaffectedhalfwillnot producemilknextseason.

Recoveryworkfocuseson twomainareas

FarmersandGrowersknowall toowellaboutthedamagefrom CycloneGabrielle,andmanyare in alongprocess of recovery from this unprecedentedevent.

AttheHawke’sBay RegionalCouncil, tounderstandthescaleofthis event andwhere supportwas required,we undertook asurveyof433pastoral farmers,representing500different properties.

The results were sobering.The cyclone damagedmorethan twomillion metres ofconventional fencingand over50 kilometresoftracks.1082dams were damagedordestroyed.1.5million

metresof waterreticulation was washed away.Inaddition,therewere majorimpactsfromslipsand blocked culverts,andtoplantings.

Thissurveyhashelped focusthe RegionalCouncil’srecovery work ontwomainareas:engaged rural communitiesand resilientland production.

We workedcloselywith catchment groupsbefore CycloneGabrielle,and sincethe eventtherehasbeengrowth incommunityandcatchmentgroups throughoutthe region.Afterthe cyclone weworkedwiththeprimarysector, andinparticulartheHawke’sBay Rural AdvisoryGroup,todevelop recovery workshops forpastoral farmers. Thesebroughttogetherindustry expertstoshareresourceson cyclone

recovery.Farmersfromoutofthe region whohad experiencedsimilar disastersalsosharedtheir experiences. Workshops were heldin Porangahau, Elsthorpe, Waikare/Puturino,Patokaand Makaretu.

We arealso workingwiththeHawke’s BayHorticulturalAdvisoryGroup toensuretheneedsofgrowersare heardandareinvolved withallofthe Horticulturemeetings.

We willcontinuetosupportthegrowth ofcatchmentgroupsandcollectives, andcommunitygroups,and willdothis through technicalandenvironmental science,waterqualityadvice,alongwith policy, regulationandlandmanagement support. We areworkinghardto make surethe recoveryplanningcan beeasilyintegratedintoanyfuture

regulatory requirements,suchasthe introductionofFresh WaterFarmPlans in2025.

Ourother focusistoencourageresilient landproduction. We aredoingthis by supporting resilienceplanningand identifying riskareaswith farmersand growers.OurCatchmentAdvisorsare workingcloselywithpastoral farmers inlandmanagement(erosioncontrol), environmentalmanagement(planning), and waterqualitythroughplantingand waterway protection.

Afurtherelementofthis work will beourLand forLifepartnershipwith TheNatureConservancyandcentral Government.Thisprogrammewill work withwillinghillcountryfarmersto develop farm planstomanageerosion risk,improvebiodiversityand reduce impactofproductionpracticeson water quality.

The region’spastoral farmersand growershave beenhard hit by Cyclone Gabrielle.Wewill work hardwith the farmingcommunitytohelpthem recover, andtohelpthem buildmore resilient businesses.

Business gotbusierand busierso Jake leftthesecurityoffulltimeemployment andsetuphis owncompany. Asan owneroperatorhehasnoemployeesto worryaboutandheenjoysthelifestyle travellingall overtheNorthIsland.

As work grew Jake bought amuch largercustom builtmachinethathe says wouldprobablycost$1million today. Ituses90litresofdieselinan hourandhelpsJakeprovide aquick, efficientjobofgrindingstumps.Itgets throughjobsquicklyand grinds ½a metrebelow groundlevel.

The lastof Beef +LambNew Zealand’snationalFarmer Feedbacksessionshavebeen heldinourregion,endingseveral weeksofinformalfarmermeetings.

Thesemeetings were held at more than50locationsacrossNewZealand andtheorganisationwillnowbe collatingand reportingbackonthe feedbackithas received.Itwillalsobe communicating what actionswillbe takenas aresult.

Thisinformationwillhelpinformother areasof focus.Theseinclude reviews ofthe roleofB+LNZ’sFarmerCouncil, B+LNZ’sapproachestoadvocacy andconsultationand whetherthe organisationshould remainintheHe WakaEkeNoapartnership.

Onthebackofthesemeetings,weare renewingoureffortstouse avariety of waysofconsultingwithour farmers andgathering feedback.Theseinclude theonlinesurveys whichhave recently beenusedto gaugefarmer response totheproposedETS reformsand changestothelow-slopemap forstock exclusion.Hundredsof farmershave takentheopportunitytocomplete thesesurveysandtheirtimeis really appreciated.
