SEASON SHAPING UP WELL Whilst demand from the EU for sheepmeat recovers post-Covid, demand from China and the US has been growing. In the 2021 season, exports to the US and China grew 38 per cent and 16 per cent respectively, compared to the 2020 season. The lift in demand from the US was driven by increased household consumption. Shipments to China have lifted off the back of the disruption caused by ASF and limited beef supply. Reduced Australia supply has also favoured New Zealand beef and sheepmeat demand.
By Genevieve Steven,
Agricultural Analyst, Rabobank
F
avourable growing conditions and strong commodity prices have given Hawke’s Bay sheep and beef farmers plenty of reason to feel optimistic in recent months, and the season is shaping up well.
The beef schedule reached a new peak in October, with the AgriHQ North Island bull price hitting NZD 6.50/kg cwt, NZD 1.05/ kg cwt above the five-year price average. The record prices have been fuelled by a lower global supply of beef and increased demand from China and the US. Global beef supply has been disrupted by the suspension of beef exports from Argentina and Brazil to China in the second half of 2021. Furthermore, ongoing disruption to the Chinese pork industry caused by African Swine Fever (ASF) is
supporting demand for beef. On the US front, the roll-out of household stimulus packages has buoyed consumer spending during Covid, increasing demand for beef. It is a similar story for sheepmeat as with beef. A new seasonal record was reached in October, when the AgriHQ North Island lamb price hit NZD 9.65/kg cwt — NZD 2.23/kg cwt above the five-year average.
While the outlook for both beef and sheepmeat in 2022 is positive, with Chinese demand likely to remain steady and farmgate prices anticipated to remain elevated, there are a number of variables which have the potential to put downward pressure on farmgate pricing for beef and sheepmeat. These include the easing of consumer demand in the US and the strengthening of the NZD/USD cross.
Shipping logistics and labour shortages at processing facilities are further factors expected to provide significant challenges to the industry over the year ahead. Although the Hawk’s Bay is postcard perfect at the moment, with lush green grass and regular rainfall, the dry winter and cold start to spring will not be totally forgotten. After two seasons of dry autumns, we anticipate many farmers will be carefully considering whether to put condition on capital stock or capitalise on strong prices by buying stock. The forecast La Niña weather pattern will be giving farmers added confidence in their stock trading decisions, as it typically brings increased rain to the region. However, there is a significant risk that Covid will impact processing plants during the summer, requiring stock to be held on farm longer. As a result, allowing for a feed buffer will be an important consideration for farmers over coming months.

SURFING FOR FARMERS Bringing farmers together, off-farm and into the surf to enhance well-being
T
his summer farmers throughout New Zealand are being encouraged to get off the farm, have a bit of fun and learn how to surf. The Surfing for farmers event first took place in Hawke’s Bay last summer and was met with considerable enthusiasm by the participants. This summer the lessons will be offered again with the plan for them to start from late November and go through to March or April. Surfing for Farmers was launched in 2018 by Gisborne-based rural sales specialist Stephen Thomson who works for Bayleys. He was inspired to set up the club after watching a documentary about surfing which helped returned US soldiers suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.
participants are treated to a BBQ and beer. Last summer numbers attending both the Waimarama and CHB lessons peaked at 25 per meeting and the feedback was really encouraging, Tim says. There are no gender or age restrictions and the youngest participant was 14 and the oldest “close to seventy”. Head coach at Waimarama is Bronson Primmer of Learn2 Surf Hawke’s Bay who is well known in surfing circles and is an ISA Accredited Coach. In CHB there are five local “real gun” surfers who donate their time and skill to give the lessons.
Andy says. Then there are other volunteers who help in the water and attend to refreshments. The events are able to go ahead thanks to very generous sponsorship from local companies Andy says. Although they are always keen to hear from other supporters who may wish to contribute. The CHB club were able to buy 20 surf boards thanks to local sponsors and refreshments are also provided by sponsors. Those interested should phone or email Tim or Andy to register interest.

When Tim Wynne-Lewis, also a rural sales specialist at Bayleys Havelock North, heard about the concept he decided to set up a similar venture in the Bay. A colleague at Bayleys Waipukurau, Andy Lee, helped establish the Central Hawke’s Bay club. The learn to surf programmes encourage farmers to take a break and step away from what can be an all-consuming business, to get some fresh air, exercise and interact with other farmers and rural professionals. All lessons are free, and they include boards and wetsuits. Afterwards

LIQUID STORAGE SOLUTIONS
F
lexi Tanks are an astonishingly simple concept that provides farmers, horticulturists industry and domestic clients with cost-effective solutions for storing water or effluent. Father and son, Anton and Andre Meier, along with Anton’s partner Jacky van der Poel, have operated Flexi Tanks for almost eight years. Based in Cambridge they supply a vast range of clients throughout the country with quality bladder tanks for all liquid storage needs. Anton Meier comes from a dairy farming background and has always been selfemployed with fingers in many pies,
including the dairy, ski-adventure sports and aviation industry. Whether looking for a 1,000 litre tank, right through to a 2,000,000 litre tank the team is keen to provide genuine advice to solve your storage problems. Flexi Tanks supply and install the best quality bladder tanks available in the New Zealand market today. They have been manufactured in France since 1959 and are built to last: they are manufactured from multi layered rip-stop technical fabric with tensile strength of 450kg per 5cm. The tanks come with a full 10 year manufacturer’s warranty for textile and

manufacture and have an expected life, under normal conditions, of up to 20 years. Not only are they reliable but they are cost-effective too and come in as a cheaper and more economical solution to other effluent storage alternatives. Flexi Tanks can be depreciated as they are a tangible asset which can be rolled up and sued somewhere else if needed. The tanks are fast and easy to install simply level a pad, unload the tank, roll it out, connect the valves, connect to your system and fill. The tanks are used for horticulture and agricultural water storage, dairy farm
effluent and leachate storage. There are several industrial uses too such as firefighting, liquid fertilisers, fuel and liquid leachate storage. Domestic clients use them for rainwater harvesting, potable (drinking) water and non-potable water storage. Originally 90% of sales were for effluent storage but now with the increasing need to store and conserve water sales are now roughly half for effluent and half for water storage, Jacky says. More details and several testimonials are available on their web site www.flexitanksnz.com
This dairy effluent tank holds 300m3 of effluent on a 250 herd Waikato dairy farm. It looks like a mini horse arena and the farmer has erected a lovely fence around the tank instead of the batten and wire standard stock fence.

THE SILENT KILLER By Dave Warburton BVSc Vet Services Hawke’s Bay
D
rench resistance is the number one animal health issue facing farmers and their vets in the NZ sheep & beef industry. Drench is the silent, slow onset profit killer. It starts out costing you 5grams/day and builds up over time. It’s estimated that undetected drench resistance is costing the NZ industry close to $50 million each year! Despite this, only 15% of our clients have up to date knowledge of what their drench status is. We often see farmers become aware they may have a problem during a wet summer or autumn when the worm population on farm is most active and the shit hits the fan (or hand piece in this case).
Farming with Drench Resistance You can farm successfully with drench resistance if you know what you are dealing with and develop a parasite management plan specific to your farming conditions. Your vet can help get you started by setting up a Faecal Egg Count Reduction Test (FECRT). The purpose of a FECRT is to establish a base line and to provide you with a report of drench actives which are effectively working, and those products to
which your parasite population is indicating developing resistance. FECRT’s compare the number of parasite eggs found in your animals’ faecal samples before drenching, with the Faecal Egg Count test at 10 days after drenching. The result is reported as the percentage that the egg count has been reduced.
Sheep - When testing drench resistance in sheep we ideally want to use undrenched lambs. You will need 12-15 lambs per drench tested. Cattle – When testing drench resistance in cattle try to select animals that were brought in as calves and are now in the
100-150 kg weight bracket. You will need 15 animals per drench tested. Some farming systems are more at risk of developing drench resistance than others. If you would like to find out more, or to book a FECRT please contact your farm animal vet.
Once the test is completed, you will be able to confidently select the appropriate drench for your animals knowing that your investment will not be wasted and will benefit the animal’s welfare and performance.
Getting started with a FECRT this summer “In Hawke’s Bay we generally get the best drench resistance data between January and March when we have a mix of significant worm species present. You will want to draft out and identify your test animals in the next month or two. They will need to become moderately wormy before we can test the effectiveness of each drench.”

SUNSMART FARMING
F
ederated Farmers wants to remind farmers and growers this is a good time to be thinking about getting “sunsmart” for summer. It has been estimated up to 25% of farmers and growers have had a skin cancer. Farmers and growers are at higher risk of catching melanoma due to New Zealand’s UV radiation intensity, and the time they spend outside. However, melanoma and skin cancers are preventable and curable diseases. The right protection techniques and annual
checks can save a life, Federated Farmers vice president and Wairarapa arable farmer Karen Williams says. “It needs to become routine to put on sunscreen before going outside. On our farm we have got big pump bottles of sunscreen at the house and down at the sheds, and smaller bottles in all the vehicles, along with plenty of brimmed hats. “As we know, farmers are very busy people, but an annual check on your health and
wellbeing, which includes a skin check, could save your life,” she says. Regular checks with a specialist or GP are the best way for those at risk to receive skin monitoring, and if melanoma is detected early enough it can be successfully treated. Farmers who go and get themselves checked and stock up on sunscreen for themselves, family, staff, and farm visitors will help see this vision realised. “It’s a legitimate farm expense. It’s no different than buying a high vis vest to be seen, helmets to protect your head,
or safety boots to protect your toes,” Karen says. Melanoma New Zealand CEO, Andrea Newland says heightening the awareness in New Zealand’s rural communities of how to protect your skin when outdoors, and the importance of having a regular skin check, will save lives. “New Zealand has the highest incidence rate of melanoma in the world. More than 4,000 are diagnosed with melanoma, and around 300 people will die from it, each year in New Zealand; in fact more people die from skin cancer than on our roads. But the good news is that it doesn’t have to be that way, given melanoma can be preventable and is almost always curable if caught early enough,” says Ms. Newland. Ms Newland also says melanoma can sometimes be perceived as a concern for older people, but that’s not the case. Ms Newland says that although the chance of developing melanoma increases with age, young people are not immune. “Melanoma can be found in younger age groups too especially people aged 25-39 years old. It’s more common in males than females, but everyone is at risk. You’ll increase your risk of melanoma if you don’t protect your skin from sunlight and it’s important to be aware that sunburn at any age increases your risk of melanoma later in life.” For more information see www.melanoma. org.nz, www.sunsmart.org.nz

THE McCUTCHEON NAME IS PLOUGHING AHEAD
T
he name McCutcheon is as familiar in rural Central Hawke’s Bay as McDonald’s is in the rest of New Zealand.
Andrew McCutcheon is the fourth generation in his family undertaking agricultural contracting in Hawke’s Bay. Starting with Andrew’s grandfather, then his father John, followed by Andrew to more recently Andrew’s son Tom. Andrew started in hay carting at the age of 15 in his father’s baling business in the 70s. The business has continued to grow over the last 40 years. Today Andrew McCutcheon Contracting Ltd (AMCL) offers year-round agricultural services starting with drilling, ploughing, sowing crops, with the season then rolling into hay, silage and baleage then back to agriculture work in March. In the down time, AMCL can contract their tractors, equipment and staff to local horticulture businesses keeping the team in work. An essential part of AMCL’s success is having the right equipment for the work and having support to keep the machinery performing. The McCutcheon’s have maintained a close working relationship with Stevenson & Taylor (SNT) Waipukurau. In 1981 Andrew brought his first hay elevator from SNT and the equipment list has grown progressively from then.
The equipment list includes Allen Drills, Kuhn Balers, Kuhn Rakes, Tedders, Discs, Rata Soft Hands, and the S&T custom roller. More recently Andrew bought a CASE IH Puma 165 CVT Tractor. The Puma is proving popular with the drivers thanks to its technology. “The young guys prefer to drive the tractors with the latest features. The Puma 165 with its CVT Transmission, GPS, air-conditioned cab and blue tooth is a winner on a long hot day.” Finding experienced drivers can be an issue in the agriculture sector and
for AMCL business is no exception. For Andrew having the latest high-tech machinery plays a big part in keeping experienced, reliable staff happy. During the seasons the gear can get a hammering and Andrew is a regular in both the SNT engineering and tractor workshops. “SNT understand my business and that having no downtime is vital for my clients. The guys know when I need urgent support and will go above and beyond to make it happen. Some of the modern gear

There are plenty of things that are tough in this industry such as weather conditions, the list goes on. Working with the guys at SNT I know I can trust their advice and rely on them to have my back.”
After 40 years Andrew still loves the machinery and contracting business.

TURNING UP THE DIAL ON RURAL RECYCLING
F
ree recycling of plastic agricultural bags is available to farmers and growers as rural recycling programme Agrecovery turns up the dial on sustainability. Recycling of bags made from low density polyethylene (LDPE) plastic is underway in Marlborough and Hawke’s Bay ahead of a nationwide rollout - following successful trials held in the regions last year. Agrecovery’s Operations Advisor Felicity Mitchell says that “the success of the trials and the enthusiasm of farmers and growers is behind the move to a permanent solution for the bags which are used for fertiliser and fungicides. Our focus is now on finding other sites around the country for collecting the plastic and engaging more manufacturers to support the programme. “LDPE is a low-quality plastic, making it more difficult to recycle, but we don’t want it being burnt or buried on farms. We’re passionate about finding the most sustainable solution for all the products we collect,” adds Mitchell. After 15 years of offering container and drum recycling, the not-for-profit organisation is partnering with agricultural manufacturers to clear more plastic from farms. “We’re extremely proud to have BASF and Yara, who have supported HDPE recycling with us for many years, come on the soft plastic journey with us,” says Agrecovery Chief Executive Tony Wilson.
“We’ve been working with Agrecovery on recycling solutions for BASF product packaging for over 10 years and we’re thrilled to now include our Kumulus®DF and Polygram®DF bags in the recycling scheme,” said Fenton Hazelwood, BASF’s National Commercial Manager and Country Manager New Zealand. “It is important that we all play a role in creating a sustainable future and through this partnership with Agrecovery we’re proud to make it easier for farmers to have a positive impact on the environment.”
have been asking us to do for years, so we’re excited to be providing sustainable options for more plastic types. “It will be successful because everyone is committed to making it work – from the
manufacturer to the growers and farmers. It will be successful at meeting farmer and grower sustainability requirements,” says Wilson. For more information and to get involved go to https://agrecovery.co.nz
Yara has supported Agrecovery’s HDPE recycling scheme since its inception and, with BASF, has helped initiate the scheme. The company’s mission is to “responsibly feed the world and protect the planet” says its Agronomy & Crop Solutions Manager David Spencer, “so, when we had the opportunity to participle in the new LDPE plastics recycling programme, we didn’t hesitate. “Growers have had little option but to burn or send their LDPE bags to landfill. This initiative represents a significant milestone in reducing the environmental impact of plastic packaging,” adds Spencer. New Zealand’s largest wine producer Indevin partnered with Agrecovery on the recycling trial and is pleased to see the scheme being rolled out. “We want to raise the game to achieve better environmental outcomes for rural communities by removing plastic from farms. This is something that farmers

ata released by the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) shows there were 100 fewer farm sales (-27.5%) for the three months ended September 2021 than for the three months ended September 2020. Overall, there were 264 farm sales in the three months ended September 2021, compared to 321 farm sales for the three months ended August 2021 (-17.8%), and 364 farm sales for the three months ended September 2020.
1,667 farms were sold in the year to September 2021, 33.4% more than were sold in the year to September 2020, with 165.1% more Dairy farms, 1.0% less Dairy Support, 20.3% more Grazing farms, 39.1% more Finishing farms and 46.3% less Arable farms sold over the same period. The median price per hectare for all farms sold in the three months to September 2021 was $31,300 compared to $25,560 recorded for three months ended September 2020 (+22.5%). The median price per hectare increased 15.2% compared to August 2021.
with the most notable being Auckland (+2 sales) and Nelson/Marlborough (+1 sales). Manawatu-Wanganui (-21 sales) and Wellington (-14 sales) recorded the biggest decreases in sales. Compared to the three months ended August 2021, 1 region recorded an increase in sales, Waikato (+4 sales). “Sales data for the three-month period ending September 2021 reflects ongoing volatility within the rural sector, on this occasion impacting farm sales which have dropped a significant 27.5% from the same period 12 months ago, albeit only slightly below the volumes recorded two years ago,” Brian Peacocke, Rural Spokesman at REINZ says. “The major impact was felt within the finishing (-36.5%), grazing (-43.3%} and the arable (-66.6%) categories. “The major gain, by comparison, occurred in the dairy category which recorded 31 sales for the 2021 September quarter versus 11 sales for the September 2020 period (+64.5%) and whilst the numbers in themselves are not too dramatic, it does nevertheless signal an emerging degree of support for the dairy industry.
The REINZ All Farm Price Index increased 0.1% in the three months to September 2021 compared to the three months to August 2021. Compared to the three months ending September 2020 the REINZ All Farm Price Index increased 13.9%. The REINZ All Farm Price Index adjusts for differences in farm size, location, and farming type, unlike the median price per hectare, which does not adjust for these factors.
“Equally, however, it could also signal that given the improving financial forecast for the dairy payout, volatility accepted, some older vendors may well be picking this is an opportune time to retire and step away from a lengthy involvement in the dairy industry.
Two regions recorded an increase in the number of farm sales for the three months ended September 2021 compared to the three months ended September 2020,

HELPING YOU SELECT THE BEST TOOL FOR THE JOB
R
ick and Francine Toki established Franick Chainsaw and Mower Services, located at 1051 Maraekakaho Road South, in September 2015. Their key aim was to restore an element of good old fashioned personal service to the industry by adding an element of integrity and honesty, and a smile, in their dealings with the public. Part of that service involves selling top quality outdoor power products that have longevity. Since 2015 the business has steadily grown and the team has recently expanded to cater to increasing demand: Alan, Craig and Kim have joined the Franick team to help with servicing, delivery, and administration respectively. There are also two casual mechanics that help out when they are particularly busy.
Technician Certificate. There are few people who can match his knowledge and experience. Francine has a background in retail and early childhood development and helps out in the office and advising customers. It’s Francine’s interest in early childhood education that sees the couple donating funds to various local schools. “It’s ongoing support from the community that enables us to give back to the community and local children,” Francine says. “We still managed to support our local community this year giving to Hawke’s Bay Karting, Ebbett Park School, Heretaunga Intermediate, Glenny Racing, The Acorn
Project and Plunket through services offered to the Raureka KidStart Centre fundraiser.” Since 2015 the range of products on offer has expanded as have the services. They sell and service lawnmowers, chainsaws, leaf blowers, chippers, hedge trimmers, line trimmers and brushcutters and ride on mowers. Their service includes an open discussion about what the client wants but the team at Franick make sure that the equipment they recommend is actually the best tool for the job. “Masport and Oleo-Mac have been with us since day one and we continue to have a great relationship with them. We
have added Makita battery outdoor power products, Cub Cadet ride on mowers and we’re really taking off with Gravely Zero Turn ride on mowers.” One added bonus of their location is that there’s a field next door which is useful for testing and demonstrating a range of equipment from mowers to hedge trimmers. There’s easy access and car and trailer parking when dropping off ride on or push mowers. Not only do Franick service and repair all the brands they sell, they also repair and service John Deere, Walker, Stihl, Husqvarna, McCulloch, Hustler, Big Dog...... the list goes on.
It’s been a tough couple of years for all, especially small business owners, but Franick has survived and is now flourishing. The couple would like to sincerely thank all their customers for not only their support, but understanding, during 2020 and 2021. ”We have been absolutely blown away by our customer support since Covid,” Francine says. Rick has been in the industry almost 30 years and is a qualified small engine mechanic with extra training on John Deere and Walker Mowers, a Level 3 Stihl Diploma and a Kohler Expert Level
