HEAD TO THE BEACH THIS SUMMER Hawke’s Bay is blessed with a large selection of beaches stretching from Mahia Peninsula in the north to Porangahau in the south. Those familiar with New Zealand coastal conditions know to check whether the beach they plan to visit is safe to swim and families might like to check if the beach is patrolled by a surf lifesaving club. Please note that Napier Beach, alongside Marine Parade, is deemed unfit for swimming.
Further south is popular Waimarama Beach with its long, sandy beach and views to Bare Island (Motuokura). This is undoubtedly the most popular beach in summer as people can swim, surf and enjoy a picnic in a shady park. Ahuriri, not far from Napier, is another popular destination as it offers a swim safe beach, a children’s playground, cafes and restaurants. There’s also an extensive boardwalk popular with walkers and cyclists.
There are several beaches that are patrolled during the summer months including Westshore, Ocean Beach, Waimarama Beach and the beach at Hardinge Road in Ahuriri.
Waipatiki Beach 20ks north of Napier is a small but beautiful sandy beach with a holiday park and camping facilities. The beach is wonderfully sandy and there are also some good walks nearby.
Ocean Beach, a small community on the east coast, is a golden sand beach with many bachs and holiday homes. It’s a fairly isolated spot with no shops but it is very popular. There’s a strong rip current that attracts surfers.
Although only a short drive from Hastings the beachfront settlements of Haumoana and Te Awanga offer a relaxed lifestyle by the sea. Both are popular fishing and surfing destinations.

RIDE HAWKE’S BAY TRAILS There’s an excellent network of cycle trails in Hawke’s Bay covering some 200kms, most of which are flat and off road. In fact the Hawke’s Bay Trails are listed amongst the 23 Ngā Haerenga Great Rides of New Zealand. These are world class cycling journeys offering the opportunity to discover many unspoiled aspects of New Zealand. Rides here can be a short as a couple of hours or cyclists can take their time and spend several days exploring all the trails have to offer. For convenience there are three different experiences: The water ride, The Wineries Ride and the Landscapes Ride. The surface of most of the trails is a lime-sand base for quiet, safe riding. Earlier in the year cyclone Gabrielle impacted some of the trails which are temporarily closed. These are shown on the downloadable map. There’s plenty of information to help plan your trips and a downloadable map available at hbtrails.nz. There’s also a Great Rides app: www. greatridesapp.com with maps and descriptions. The downloadable map has plenty of information showing cellar doors, bike hire outlets, accommodation, cafes, bars, toilets etc The wineries ride is a great opportunity to sample some of the many wineries in the district.
Cycling along the Cape Kidnappers coast.
There’s a short route of 30km or a longer one at 60km. Every trail has a good description online. Bikes can be hired at quite a number of hire shops and there are companies offering cycle tours. Takaro Trails is an award winning company that hires out bikes and offers a great range of tours. Also on offer are route planning services, new Ebikes, pickups and drop-offs. Their winery tour options include a Cape Winery tour which is just 16kms and includes visits to six wineries. Their other winery tours are an Ahuriri to Cape Coast option and the Taradale Winery Loop. Bike hire shops are dotted about the district including Marine Parade in Napier. There’s a great selection ranging from cargo bikes, to electric bikes, kids bikes and tandems to name but a few. Te Awanga also has hire facilities and so does Havelock North.

If you’re looking for a day trip exploring wider Hawke’s Bay there are some interesting options ranging from half day excursions to more extensive expeditions. There’s an excellent selection of heritage trails for those interested in learning more about local culture and history. Details are available on the Hastings District Council website.
Maraetotara Falls
The Redwoods
This is about a 40 minutes’ drive from Napier and drivers should head for Waimarama. Visitors can park their car on Maraetotara Road and take an easy 10-minute walk along the Maraetotara Historic Walk which leads to the falls base. Swimming is allowed and it’s a very popular spot for those looking to cool down in beautiful surroundings. The falls are at the top of the reserve and a historic power station is at the bottom.
Nestled underneath Te Mata Peak on the outskirts of Havelock North, a large grove of 223 California redwoods stand over 40 metres high. Drop the car off at the ‘Main Gates Car Park’ at the base of Te Mata Peak and take your pick of paths to follow. Hop on the ‘Big Redwoods Track’ for the shortest and most direct option to the Redwoods. Taking approximately 1 hour, this rugged yet relatively flat 2.7km loop offers unparalleled views of the Heretaunga Plains, native bush and, of course, the slumbering giant. Credit Jimmy Miller
Lake Tutira and Tutira Recreation Reserve
Guthrie Smith Arboretum
A delightful spot 50km north of Napier with two lakes, picnic spots, short term camping and walks, all with beautiful views. There are two lakes, Tutira and its smaller neighbour Waikopiro, both definitely picture-postcard material, surrounded by undulating hills. There’s plenty of bird life to enjoy-swans, shags, herons, fantails-as the reserve is also a bird sanctuary. Fishing is also a popular activity although algal blooms have affected the water quality but numerous parties are working on solutions such as aeration and wetland planting. Non-motorised boats only are permitted on the lake.
Overlooking Lake Tutira the 90ha arboretum has been planted with over 20,000 trees since 2002. This is a former sheep station farmed by author and naturalist Herbert Guthrie-Smith. The overall concept is plantings of trees together from different geographic areas. For example, Europe and North America. On Sundays from October to May, the Guthrie-Smith Arboretum is open to the public from 9am to 5pm. Entry is free..

Winery lunches under big blue skies. Fresh produce from a farmers’ market. Delicious stops on easy-riding cycle trails. Road trips to favourite swimming spots. Real fruit ice creams. Long hot days and ocean breezes. Vineyard concerts. Scenic walks and sunscreen. The energising rhythm of music festivals. Tasting flights of chardonnay. A long weekend in the world’s newest Great Wine Capital.
