Taira¯whitiMuseumandArtGallery alwayshasanexcitingrangeof exhibitions,alongwithcollectionsto viewthatincludephotographs,art, taongaMa¯ori,naturalandsocialhistory objects.

Someexhibitionsarepermanent whileothersarefor afiniteperiod.One suchtemporaryexhibitionthathas justopenedisColoursDeluxewhich runsuntil25June2023.ColoursDeluxe celebratestheachievementofSarah andEdwardFeatonofGisborne,who inthe1880sundertookanambitious projecttodescribeandpaintNew Zealand’sfloweringplants.Theirwork TheArtofNewZealandFlorawas publishedin1889andwasthefirstfull colourartalbumprintedandpublished inNewZealand.

TheFeatonsarrivedinGisbornein 1875andthecoupleworkedfromtheir modesthomeduringtheirleisuretime, withSarahpaintingthewatercolours andsurveyorEdwardwritingthetext forthebook.Theycorrespondedwith eminentbotanistsofthetimeand procuredover300botanicalspecimens fromaroundNewZealandtoworkfrom. Itissaidthatthecoupleproducedthe exquisitepiecetocounterthebelief amongbotaniststhattherewereno flowersonNewZealandnativeplants. ItwasthefirstbookpublishedinNew

Zealandusingchromolithography colourtechnology.However,thecost ofproductionalmostbankruptedthe publishingfirmandtherewerenoother volumes published.

Acopyofthebookwaspresentedby theNewZealandGovernmenttoQueen Victoriain1897ontheoccasionofher diamondjubilee.

In1919,theDominionMuseum(now Te Papa TongarewaMuseumofNew Zealand)purchasedthecollectionof 134watercolours. Twentyofthese watercolours,alongsideotherpaintings, artefactsandarchivalmaterialfromthe collectionsoftheAlexander Turnbull Library,AucklandMuseum,MTG Hawke’sBayand Taira¯whitiMuseum, togetherwithobjectsgenerouslylent fortheexhibitionbythedescendantsof theFeatons,willbedisplayedtogether forthefirsttime.

Anewillustratedhistoryoftheir endeavours,writtenbyGisborne historianJeanJohnston,accompanies theexhibition,andcopiesareforsaleat themuseumshopandonline.

Theexhibitionalsoincludesbeautiful workbyotherNewZealandwomen whopaintedbotanicalwatercolours, includingGeorginaBurneHetley whosebookTheNativeFlowersof NewZealandIllustratedinColourswas publishedin1888.

Theexhibitionwillalsobring visitorsintothepresentbyhighlight currentenvironmentalprojectsinthe Tairwhitiregionthataimtosupport theconservationofNewZealandnative flora.
