Someexhibitionsarepermanent whileothersarefor afiniteperiod.One suchtemporaryexhibitionthathas justopenedisColoursDeluxewhich runsuntil25June2023.ColoursDeluxe celebratestheachievementofSarah andEdwardFeatonofGisborne,who inthe1880sundertookanambitious projecttodescribeandpaintNew Zealand’sfloweringplants.Theirwork TheArtofNewZealandFlorawas publishedin1889andwasthefirstfull colourartalbumprintedandpublished inNewZealand.
TheFeatonsarrivedinGisbornein 1875andthecoupleworkedfromtheir modesthomeduringtheirleisuretime, withSarahpaintingthewatercolours andsurveyorEdwardwritingthetext forthebook.Theycorrespondedwith eminentbotanistsofthetimeand procuredover300botanicalspecimens fromaroundNewZealandtoworkfrom. Itissaidthatthecoupleproducedthe exquisitepiecetocounterthebelief amongbotaniststhattherewereno flowersonNewZealandnativeplants. ItwasthefirstbookpublishedinNew
Zealandusingchromolithography colourtechnology.However,thecost ofproductionalmostbankruptedthe publishingfirmandtherewerenoother volumes published.
Acopyofthebookwaspresentedby theNewZealandGovernmenttoQueen Victoriain1897ontheoccasionofher diamondjubilee.
In1919,theDominionMuseum(now Te Papa TongarewaMuseumofNew Zealand)purchasedthecollectionof 134watercolours.
