Te Mata School 2023 Te Mata School is a special place to be a part of! It is full of children that love to ‘Seek Their Heights’ inside and outside of the classroom. Our dedicated teachers share their talents and expertise across the curriculum, and our supportive parents and whānau are actively involved in the life of our school. These relationships are an important part of our learning community culture, and are why 2023 has been a successful year for us. Te Mata School provides children with exciting and innovative learning opportunities/experiences, within our collaborative learning spaces. 2023 has been a busy and exciting year! Some of our highlights beyond our classes included: Sharing our learning and cultural performances with our community as part of our Matariki evening. The launch of our new house designs which was the legacy project of our 2022 school student leaders. Our Junior School visits to the National Aquarium as part of our specialist Science programme.

Our first teams to take part in the Hawke’s Bay Lego, First Robotic League. Our Junior Production and Senior Wearable Arts Shows. School Choir performing at ‘The Kids Sing Hastings’. 200+ Kaitiaki children going on various enviro trips to Te Mata Peak, Forest & Bird, Guthrie Park/Karituwhenua Stream Restoration Project and Pekapeka Wetland Reserve. Our Kapa Haka taking part in the interschool Omahu School Waiata performance. Our Year 5 Camp to Guthrie Smith Education Centre and Year 6 Adventure Weeks. Looking to 2024 Next year we are excited, as we have big plans for how we can grow and strengthen our school further. We will look to ‘Seek Our Heights’ as a community, to provide the very best opportunities for our children across the curriculum, allowing them to thrive in life. This all aligns with our new school vision;

‘A community growing curious, courageous and confident learners who seek their heights now and in the future.’ Thank you to our amazing students, teachers, staff and community - you all make Te Mata School such a special place to be! Want to know more?

THE YEAR THAT WAS...ONGAONGA SCHOOL

Ongaonga School is in the historical village of Ongaonga, situated in the very heart of Central Hawkes Bay between Highway 50 and State Highway 2, a mere 14-minute drive from Waipawa. We are fortunate to have the beautiful Ruahine mountain range as our backdrop and enjoy all the benefits of rural living. Ongaonga School’s vision is “Striving for Excellence – Whaia te iti Kahurangi.” Our core values are Teamwork, Respect, Effort and Empathy. The students are encouraged and supported to demonstrate the “TREE” values in everything they do so that our students care for each other and our environment. We pride ourselves on keeping low student to teacher ratios so that we can deliver engaging programs while stimulating curiosity and our students’ desire to learn. Ongaonga School is a full primary, with dedicated staff that provide quality education from the new entrants right up to year 8 students. We offer a range of different learning opportunities at school and out in the community. We are able to cater for students with a diverse range of learning needs by differentiating programmes, support from Teacher Aides, Reading Recovery and Individual Learning Plans. Ongaonga School is very well known for holding the Onga 7’s tournament. This is a big day in our school calendar where 17 CHB schools come together to play 7 a side Rugby, Netball, Football and Hockey. This year the children battled a very cold winter’s day, but thoroughly enjoyed their sport and the opportunity to see friends from other schools. ‘While we are a small school, we have very high achieving students in the academic, sporting and arts fields. Highlights from this year

include the Family Fun Day, where families joined us for an amazing race activity, bouncy castles, BBQ’s and the outdoor movie and stayed in tents at the school. We had a wonderful day at the Hastings Art Gallery investigating Design Kahungungu and then creating clay waka as part of our Aotearoa New Zealand Histories inquiry. Our successful AgriKids team ventured south to Timaru to compete in the National competition. We held a very successful Fashion Show, where the children modelled fashion through the ages that they designed and made out of recycled material. We had our annual Halloween Disco at the Ongaonga Hall and were joined by children from our neighbouring schools. Ag Day was a wonderful day seeing many children show their animals and pets we had everything from ponies to a pet fly! The biggest category was chickens - and one very noisy rooster! This year after lots of fundraising we were able to purchase a school van. The van picks up and drops off children from and to Waipukurau and Waipawa and some roads that aren’t on the school bus runs. This has been a great addition to our school and supports our parents and community. The school pool is ready to open and we look forward to our school and community using the pool throughout the summer months. We are accepting enrolments for 2024 and invite you to come and visit our lovely school and meet our amazing staff and tamariki. Check out our website www.Ongaonga.school.nz We wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season! Carmen Edgecombe - Principal cedgecombe@ongaonga.school.nz

Pukehou School Pukehou School is proud to provide an outstanding education for year 1-8 students. Located halfway between Hastings and Waipukurau, we have a current roll of 80 pupils. The School is at the centre of the Pukehou community, and prides itself on being a genuine rural enviro school. A few members of the tima kākāriki - Green Team with Bug Houses which they have given a beautiful new lease of life. Pets Day – always a highlight!

All tamariki took part in the Marathon in a Term fundraiser.

Teamwork and a willingness to get stuck in and show a “can-do” attitude was definetely on display throughout the action packed week the senior class spent in Wellington! The William Pike Challenge: Outdoor Activities | Community Service | passion projects The team managed to hikoi up to the top of Te Mata Peak. The views provided perspective and an opportunity to get a sense of our turangawaewae - where we stand. “It was awesome to involve the team in a planting project helping restore the ngahere at such an iconic location.” Principal, Rob Pratt.

Our whole school production of Ali Baba and the Bongo Bandits gave us much to celebrate! Success does not happen by chance though. Ours was the result of a committed team effort and serious hard work by both students and staff alike. If we think of our vision, confidence, creativity, and a “can-do” attitude were clearly present.

THE YEAR THAT WAS 2023 has marked a significant year for Heretaunga Kindergartens as we embarked on a transformative rebranding journey back in May. Our logo, our name and our colours have changed... but we are still the same Kindergarten Association, we have just had a much needed brand refresh that we feel is more connected to our kaiako, staff, tamariki, whānau and communities. A brand that now brings all 16 kindergartens, 16 communities and the Support Office together as one.

Principals statement: St Joseph’s School Wairoa We are a small special character (Catholic) school in the heart of the Wairoa Township where we light the path – learning to love and loving to learn. The collaborative effort of the staff and BoT ensure that what is best for tamariki is always at the fore front of all they do – as they approach each day with Faith, Love, Service and Hope. The catholic social teaching principles apply Gospel values such as love, peace, justice, compassion, reconciliation, service and community to modern social problems. It continually develops through observation, analysis, and action. The nine core principles of Catholic social teaching are embedded into our teaching and learning at our kura.

Celebrating St Joseph’s Day with Nuhaka School This year Nuhaka School were on site with us to celebrate St Joseph’s Day. We had a fun day with Sport Hawkes Bay, Wairoa Police and Tahuri Mai Trust joining us for the day. Check out the fun we had.

Kapa Haka Festival On Thursday 16th, November we participated in the Wairoa Schools’ Kapa Haka Festival. This year it was held at Tiniroto School. Our whanau came and joined and it was a beautiful day.

Once again we had a challenging beginning to the school year with Cyclone Gabrielle hitting our community hard and impacting on our lives significantly on February 14, 2023. The Year that Was: The morning of February 14, 2023 our school field became the landing spot for two helicopters. With the Fire Station next door to our school, this was an ideal location for the helicopters to land.

New Food Technology Learning Space This year we have taught our own technology programme for year 7 and 8 students. We had a special blessing for our new food technology room. The students are enjoying using our new space to cook. They have made lemonade scones, chocolate chip biscuits, apple crumble and prepared a hangi for Te wiki o Te Reo Maori. All classes in the school utilise the new learning space.

Nuhaka School Nuhaka School was closed due to flooding. Our school charism is “never see a need without doing something about it”. We invited Nuhaka School to join us here at our school till plans could be sorted for them to return back to their Nuhaka community -

Powhiri for Nuhaka School

Gymnastics Programme We sourced for our school but after the cyclone we opened it up to all our schools that wanted to participate. It was well received and we had 53 sessions over 11 weeks. The children enjoyed learning something new and you could see them growing confidence in moving and manipulating their bodies as the session went on. We do not have a gymnastic club in Wairoa so being able to have a skilled instructor like Nicole Ludwig from Tairawhiti, was an amazing opportunity for teachers to see how to teach gymnastics. It was a very successful programme that reached out into our community and enabled many children to participate and GIVE IT A GO!

Senior Room Year 7 & 8 Urban Trip to Poneke Our Year 7 and 8 class went on an urban trip to Poneke/ Wellington. They visited Parliament, Weta Studios, Wellington Zoo, Sister of Compassion and Te Papa. It was a busy few days with lots of fun activities. Special thank you to those parent helpers that make these trips possible.

Peace Pou On Wednesday 25th, October, we unveiled the Peace Pou that we received last year from the Hawke’s Bay Peace Poles/ Te Matau a Māui Nga Pou Rangimarie group. Our school received one of the 43 Pou that were gifted to spread a message of peace in schools, churches, marae, parks and public spaces across Hawke’s Bay. Māhia’s Pauline Tangiora who is a patron for The Peace Foundation nominated our school for a Peace Pou. We attended the gifting of the Pou at Te Awanga Marae last year in September. Pauline Tangiora is an inspiration to us all with her life long involvement in the Peace movement. Social Justice Week in 2023 ran from 3rd to 9th of September. It was the beginning of something very special. For the next three years the focus will be on peace and responding to conflict. The overarching tagline is: ‘Imagine Peace For All / Pohewatia te Rangimārie mō te Katoa’. Each year there will be a unique focus. The theme for 2023 was ‘Peace begins with you! / Ka tīmata tonu te Rangimārie i roto i ā koe!’. Our Room 1 class spent the week decorating our Peace Pou with their handprints and preparing a place for it on our school grounds. They organised for all students to create an origami peace crane. A “peace crane” is a peace symbol and service to unveil the Pou. With the current conflicts around the world today it is important to remind us all, to use non-violent ways of dealing with conflict and problems and actively encourage peacemaking. We selected it to be placed on our front lawn so people can see it from out supermarket and be reminded about Peace.

Nuhaka return to their community Nuhaka School moved into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints Chapel in Nuhaka. We joined them on their first day for the powhiri. We joined Nuhaka School for another fun day of physical activities.

Maara Kai Our senior students prepared our Maara Kai space for planting. Our junior rooms grew seedlings and prepared a worm farm. We are looking forward to growing vegetables for our school lunches and our school community.

Proudly supporting the local community We Learn with faith for tomorrow

EBBETT PARK SCHOOL 2023 2023 has been a year of significant change for Ebbett Park School and while we are still not 100% complete 3 of our 4 big projected are nearing completion with the final project being worked on during the summer break. 1. Replacement of the PMC buildings: Room 9 and 10. These buildings were buildings that were well past their ‘use by date’. Work started in November 2022 with two new classrooms being built in the area of the old senior playground.

On a personal note I want to say a massive THANK YOU to our tamariki for being so understanding and resilient in a year that has seen them miss out on opportunities that they would have had in any other ‘normal’ year, to the staff: THANK YOU for your hard work and flexibility to work in and around the unprecedented events we have had to endure this year and last and by no means least to our Whanau and community: THANK YOU for your trust,

This year at Ebbett Park School it has been busy and exciting and has seen lots of change. We are in new classrooms, we have a new senior playground being built and next year there will be a new bike track, which will go around the entire field. There have been barely any places for the seniors to play since they have blocked off most of the field and some bits of the school area. Now they have blocked off the bits where the old room 9 and 10 were to make way for the new playground. I think 2024 will be even more exciting with the completion of the bike track and new playground.

023 began with a quiet sense of celebration that we were finally out from under the shadow of COVID-19 - as per Hastings Intermediate kawa, we were able to begin the year with a pōwhiri for our new staff, students and their whānau. Our relief was to be short-lived when just two weeks later, on 14 February we were slammed by what would retrospectively be called the North Island Weather Event - Cyclone Gabrielle. As a school and a community, we generally emerged largely unscathed, but some of our families suffered severe hardship and our Napier-based staff endured difficult commutes. The Education community rallied and awhi was provided and gratefully received. As we were less affected we were happy to fundraise to support Eskdale School. We were devastated to learn of the impact on Michelle and Stable Hearts as we enjoy a close connection. So glad they have been able to get up and running again in a new location. We were not beaten by Covid-19 and likewise, we were not going to let a cyclone defeat us! We got on with the business of teaching and learning and gradually we were able to put events and opportunities back on the calendar. Intermediate School is all about the opportunities! We just managed to enjoy an afternoon of whakawhanaungatanga with a whole school Tabloids afternoon before the weather became ominous. Nonetheless, our specialist programmes were up and running again by Week 4 offering Materials (soft and hard), Food and Digi Tech, in addition to Science, and Sport Science. Our Arts programme offers Visual Art, Music, Cultural Dance, Drama and Te Reo. Our School Councillors and Ambassadors got lots of good leadership tips at the GRIP conference to set them up for a year of leading and representing their peers. Super 6 sporting opportunities punctuated the year and Hastings Intermediate experienced both sporting and manaakitanga success. We brought home the shield for Rugby Sevens and also won boys’ volleyball and netball. As part of our commitment to, ‘My community, my responsibility’ our Sports Academy supported the Mitre 10 Tough Guy and Gal competition and received some superlative compliments! We just wanted to take the time to acknowledge … these tamariki to be such beautiful people, clearly showing that they live and breathe the values of your kura. (The Healthy Active Learning Team) Term 2 was a significant highlight for the Arts with 90 students rehearsing and performing in a magnificent ShowQuest. We were honoured to receive an award for Best Use of Props. Thanks to Mrs Dagg for the script and stage direction, Mr Danes for the musical support and Russ from Rezpect Dance Academy for extra choreographing over and above our regular Friday Hip Hop class. The term culminated with a stunning Mātariki Showcase!

Mānawa maiea te putanga o Matariki Mānawa maiea te ariki o te rangi Mānawa maiea te Mātahi o te tau Matariki hunga nui Matariki ahunga nui Matariki manako nui The evening began with a magnificent performance by our Kapa Haka rōpū, tutored by Hēni Bartlett and Rik Huata. The celebration continued with: • Reflection: remembering loved ones who had passed on • Celebration: of the learning over the term • Aspiration: the setting of learning goals and aspirations Term 3 is a busy one in an Intermediate calendar! We begin to think about the following year - ushering out half of our school (the tuakana) who are readying themselves to embark on their High School journey and welcoming in a whole new cohort of teina. Visits to and from contributing schools and Open Evening are very special events into which we put a lot of planning as they are both opportunities for our current students to demonstrate leadership and our school values of Manaakitanga AND important occasions to welcome our new students and allay anxieties. We enjoyed visiting Hastings Central, Ebbett Park, Mahora, Parkvale, Mayfair and Raureka Schools. It’s hard to believe that we also managed to fit Mathletics, Science Roadshow, Cross Country, Careers Expo, Short Film Competition, Dance Festival, Feilding Exchange, Bandquest and AIMS into the same term! Success at AIMS included 3rd in Div B for our Netball team, 4th in Div A for Rippa Rugby and 4th in Y7 BMX. A visit from the Raw Sisters was an extra highlight and we had fun with our very own version of the Dragon’s Den as the climax of a term’s mahi centred around Enterprise and Innovation. The remodel of the 1-6 block which includes the Science Room is now complete, modernlooking and fit for purpose! All of our classrooms now have up-to-date furniture to enhance learning environments. The Mara Kai has undergone a transformation and is now an abundant and productive part of our daily life. Our staff and students have now had a year to enjoy the more collaborative space within the Tech Block and it has been given the thumbs up! Term 4 brings us to a state of both winding down for 2023 and anticipating 2024 with much excitement! We are looking forward to celebrating the success of our tamariki across a range of academic, sporting, cultural and leadership milestones at our Prizegiving on 14 Dec. We can’t know what 2024 has in store for us, but we do know that as a community, we are resilient! Thank you to our Board, staff, students and community - it takes a village to raise a child and we are glad that you are part of our village!
