Thisimportantgathering,aimed atintroducingthosewithspecial needsorhighcomplexneedsto localsupportservicesandopportunities, wasmadepossiblethroughthecollective effortsoforganisationssuchasGeneva Healthcare,BlomfieldSpecialSchooland ResourceCentre,theMinistryofEducation, IHC,NorthAble,theMinistryofSocial Development,Tiaho,andConnected.It provedtobeadayoflearning,connection, andfunforallwhoattended.
Withover20stallholderspresent,there wasnoshortageofinformationand supportforwhānau.Amongthemany wereAlzheimersNewZealandNorthland, SolomonGroup,andTeHauorao Ngāpuhi,offeringkōreroandresources alongsideothers.Eachstallprovided anopportunitytoconnect,makingit
ameaningfuldayforthoseseeking assistance.Theexpowasopenedwitha heartfelthimeneandkarakialedbyTe RauAllen,settingthetoneforadayof whakawhanaungatanga.
Oneofthestandouthighlightsofthe daywastheinteractivesensorytentset upbyNgāpuhiIwiSocialServices(NISS). Their3mx6mpop-upmarqueewas transformedintoasensoryexperience, whererangatahiwhaikahacouldexplore theirsensesthroughtouch,taste,sight, smell,andfeel.NISScleverlyweaved keyNgāpuhimessagingthroughoutthe sensoryexperience,helpingparticipants engagewiththeirkaupapainafunand uniqueway.
Over50whaikahamadetheirwaythrough thesensorytent,with47optingtotake
partinablindfoldedtastetest.Whānau enjoyedthechallengeofguessingjuice flavours,withonly3oftheparticipants successfullypickingtherightflavour. Participantswerealsogivenanactivity cardfeaturingthesevenpouofNISSkey messages.Guidedbytheirsupportpeople, theynavigatedthetent,searchingfor thecolour-codedpouhiddenwithinthe sensorywalls.Astheycompletedtheir activitycards,theexcitementgrew,and whānaucouldbeheardencouragingthe competitiveparticipants.Theinteractive natureoftheactivityreallyshonethrough, witheveryonefullyimmersedinthe experience.

ŌtiriaandMoerewa residentslet outafloodof emotionandreliefon10 Augustasthespillway floodmitigationproject officiallyopened,easing yearsofflood-related fears.Thiscommunitydriveneffortshowcases thestrongcollaboration betweenlocalmaraeand hapūNgatiKopakiand NgatiTeArakaumatua, theTaumarereFlood ManagementWorking Group,Northland RegionalCouncil(NRC), FarNorthDistrict Council,andcentral government–Kānoa. Centraltothe$7millionprojectisa$3.5 million,60-meterbridgeonPokapuRoad. Constructedonmultiple-ownedwhānau landwiththeblessingofshareholders, itreplacesan18-meterbridge,which haddivertedwatertowardsŌtiriaand Moerewaandworsenedlocalflooding issues.Thenewbridgecanhandlethree timesmorefloodwaterandisdesignedto withstandonce-in-a-centuryfloods. TheTeAraiNativeNurseryteamis thrilledtobepartofthemonumental KaiparaWaterScheme,with workunderwayattheimpressiveTe WaihekeorareservoirontheNorthern PoutoPeninsula.Nestled75meters abovesealevelinanaturalbasinatop rollingsanddunes,thisreservoirisset totransformtheregion’shorticultural landscape.Oncefullyconstructed,itwill havethecapacitytosupportaround 1100hectaresofnewhorticultural developments,providingasustainable watersourceforthefuture.
Ourteamhasbeenattheforefrontofthis project,tacklingtheessentialgroundwork neededforthisgreentransformation.With enthusiasmandexpertise,weinitiatedthe sitepreparation,carefullysprayingand removingallweedstoensureahealthy foundationforplanting.Followingthis, ourcrewsuccessfullyplantednearly 20,000nativeplantsaroundthereservoir’s perimeter,enhancingthenaturalbeauty oftheareawhilealsocontributingtoits ecologicalstability.

Remediationisonceagainsupporting localnurseriesandenablingwhānau andhapūtotakeleadershipinreducing sedimentfromthelandwashingintothe KaiparaMoana.
Throughthe2024Kaitiakitangainitiative, KMRhasofferedakohaoflocally-sourced treesforplantingonmaraeandother whenuaMāorinearwaterwaysandon steeperodiblehillsides.
Anumberofthe39maraeintheKaipara MoanacatchmentacrossAucklandand NorthlandhavetakenKMRuponthe opportunitytoreceiveplants,rushesand sedgesandworkwiththeirpeopletoget themintothegroundthiswinter.
Initssecondyear,theKaitiakitanga initiativeissupportedbyKMR’snetwork of19accreditednurseriesandco-funding partners,andaimstoensuretangata whenuacanplaytheirpartinprotecting andrestoringthemauriofKaiparaMoana.
